NEWS RELEASE 8-4-10 Media Contact: Kelsey Huber (913) 649-4040 x 102 Or Stacy Dalton (913) 485-3020 SMALL BUSINESS IS BIG ON RECYCLING Lean, mean and green - a local Kansas City business is finding a way to be all three. Dalton Ink, an embroidery and screen printing shop located in downtown Overland Park, finds ingenious ways to be environmentally friendly and save money at the same time. Take their printing machine, for example. All of the inks are water based. Not only are there no chemicals to deal with from an environmental standpoint, but it’s a bonus to the employees because there are no chemical fumes to breathe either. Dalton said she originally bought the printing machine because it, along with the software she uses, allowed her to be more flexible when it came to short runs and artwork sizing. “I realized I was losing a lot of business because, with set-up costs, I just couldn’t make a profit on small orders. Now, that’s what I specialize in,” Dalton said. “This printer is not only environmentally friendly, it made my business more nimble!” Aside from the printer, Dalton finds help from other businesses as well. She uses bottled water boxes from the Athletic Club of Overland Park that would otherwise be discarded. “I simply asked, and they were happy to help me out,” explained Dalton. “They’re perfect for shipping Tshirts.” Now they save their unused boxes for her. Dalton Ink also uses ink pens from Las Vegas casinos. The idea for her latest green endeavor came from her graphic designer, Jeremy Neumann, who suggested using misprinted T-shirts to create tags for the T-shirts they sell. The tags are printed on the opposite side of the T-shirt as well as the unprinted front or back, then cut, stiffened and attached to shirts in outgoing orders. “It was a great way to use ‘waste’ T-shirts to make our tags more memorable.” said Dalton. Besides giving them a unique, handmade appearance, the fact that they are made from recycled material (and bear the recycling sign) is great for public relations too. “Being environmentally friendly is not hard, really,” said Dalton. “You just have to look for opportunities every day. Keeping your mind open to it is really the key.” For more information on this story, please call Stacy Dalton at (913) 485-3020 or Kelsey Huber at (913) 649-4040 x 102.
