What Your Chamber is:
The Kaufman Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit voluntary partnership of business
and professional people working together to build a healthy economy and improve the
quality of life in our community. Working alone may not always be successful so the
Chamber works together, pooling time and resources so that great accomplishments can be
made that benefit the entire business community.
What Your Chamber is not:
Your Chamber is not a part of the city, county or state governments; a civic, service or
social club; a social service or welfare agency.
Who Leads Your Chamber:
Your Chamber is run by its members. The 29 members of the elected Board of Directors
determine policies and set goals. Six Directors are elected each year for a three year term.
The Executive Committee is elected by the Board. A Chairman presides over all the Board
meetings. The day-to-day operations are handled by a paid professional president and staff.
Your Chamber has Five Functions:
• Economic Development: Assist existing businesses, industries and developers and
retail firms in Kaufman to grow and expand locally with priorities of tax generation,
job creation and capitol investment. Create a climate that encourages existing
businesses to choose to add shifts or expand locally as they find new markets, expand
their product offerings or as a demand for existing products increases.
• Membership Services: Promote an affirmative and interactive membership program.
Develop and maintain programs that generate sources of funding. Achieve effective
and efficient internal Chamber operations.
• Tourism: Create awareness that Kaufman is a designation for visiting landmarks,
memorials and special events. Attract outside visitor dollars to our local restaurants,
motel and retail businesses by providing advertising and promotion for community
events.
• Community Development: Improve the communications, health care opportunities,
marketing local businesses, transportation, small business opportunities, appearance
of the community and volunteer options for the Kaufman Area.
• Government Relations: Identify issues, monitor proposals, ordinances and legislation.
Develop and communicate pro-business positions on city ordinances, county
ordinances and state legislation and regulation affecting the growth and profitability of
Kaufman business and industry.

t is my great honor to serve as the 2015 Chairman of the Board for the Kaufman Chamber of Commerce Board of
Directors. The enthusiasm and diligence of our Past Chairman, Wendy Thomas, coupled with the hard work of our
Chamber staff, Board of Directors, and the support of our chamber as a whole, positions our community for positive growth
in the years to come.
Kaufman is blessed to have a business community that emphasizes strategic growth and prosperity. Such a philosophy
allows for our community to be a place where people will want to live and raise their families and where businesses will

Volunteers serving on boards help Kaufman operate smoothly. In
addition to city council and city employees, many citizens volunteer
their time to serve on various boards. Their dedication helps provide
important services. Kaufman Economic Development Corporation
does not work directly under the city, but it does work with the city,
and board members are appointed by city council. KEDC works
with business prospects interested in relocating to Kaufman. The
efforts of KEDC board members can bring additional jobs and tax

estled in the rich landscape among three of North Texas’
busiest highways, Interstates 20 and 45 and U.S. Highway
175, the City of Kaufman just might be one of the state’s
best-kept secrets. An easy drive away from the cities of Dallas and
Fort Worth, Kaufman also leads the way to much sought after
attractions in East Texas, including the once-a-month shopping
mecca of Canton and Lake Tawakoni’s coveted recreation and
campsites. Kaufman itself boasts a park dedicated to all veterans
from Kaufman County. The site also is home to a segment replica
of the Vietnam Memorial Wall.

BUSINESS AS USUAL
Kaufman’s dedication to attracting and maintaining businesses is
unquestionable. Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, a 100-bed, stateof-the-art facility, ABOX Packaging, servicing some of the country’s
best-known entities, and Falcon Steel, which employees more than
200 non-union workers, all are testaments to the city’s appeal.
Other long-standing employers include Kaufman County and
the Kaufman Independent School District. Combined, they employ
more than 1,000 people. Manufacturers and distributors employ an
estimated 20 percent of the city’s diverse job base, while 17 percent
work in medical-related fields and another 23 percent in government.
“We import about 2,900 workers per day into our community,”
Kaufman EDC executive director, Lee Ayres said. “It actually bulks
up our daytime population, which in turn helps our retail and service
industries. They may not live here, but they might buy gas, groceries
or visit their insurance agent here.”
Multiple locations in Kaufman are ready to house new businesses.
Retail and office spaces, ranging from 1,500 to 6,000-square-feet, are
available at Prairie Creek Business Park along U.S. Highway 175. In
downtown Kaufman, on the city’s historic square, lease space of up to
3,000-square-feet is being offered.
“We work very hard to try to attract business. That’s part of [our
job]”, said City Councilman Barry Ratcliffe. The city council in
conjunction with the Kaufman Economic Development Corporation
tries to prepare the whole community for the future.”
When the council and KEDC can draw business to town, he said,
that creates revenue and those dollars generate sales, which helps the
city operate and make improvements while largely keeping the tax
rate from rising.
Kaufman already is the location of Falcon Steel, a company whose
products help guide motorists and transport electricity, not only in

the DFW area, but also throughout the state and across the country.
Along with transmission lines, Falcon consistently builds lighting
poles and overhead sign structures for high profile improvements
like Dallas’ “High Five”, the city’s busiest highway interchange.
They’ve also constructed goods for Duke Energy and contributed to
wet projects near Las Vegas.
“We’ve built for just about every utility in the United States,” said
General Manager Larry Minor, a Kaufman native who has been with
Falcon nearly 30 years.
While ripe for larger retailers and manufacturers to occupy prime
real estate, Kaufman also is the kind of place that is dedicated to and
supports small businesses.
QUALITY OF LIFE
Check any of Kaufman’s local restaurants, shops, or parks and a
certain hard-to-find charm is apparent. There’s a down-home way
about folks rarely found these days, especially in larger cities. Yet
Kaufman has maintained a high quality of living through the years.
Current Mayor Dr. William Fortner’s wife, Norma, is from
Kaufman, however, that was not the reason the couple located their
family here nearly four decades ago. Instead, opportunity knocked.
Dr. Fortner chose to leave Dallas to join a solid group of local
physicians.
“Six years later, we got [Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital],” he
said. “Very few towns the size of Kaufman have a hospital, and it’s a
quality hospital, too. I’m real proud of it. Kaufman is a small town,
so you get to know a lot of people. You go to the store and you don’t
know anyone [in a big city]. I go to the store here and I know all kinds
of people. We have good schools and the low crime rate is a big deal.”
Long time resident Barry Ratcliffe who serves on the Kaufman
City Council and the Kaufman Economic Development Corporation
said the city’s size and all that comes along with it lured his family
east.
“What attracted me was it’s small town atmosphere and the
school system, because I had school-aged children at the time,” he
explained. “I’m from a small town, so it had everything I was looking
for and everything was close. We just like the quiet, closeness of the
community.”
Parks and schools often are the signifiers of a great community
and Kaufman is no different, with a celebrated school district and
much-used sports complex along State Highway 34.
As far as higher education goes, Trinity Valley Community
College’s Health Science Center and School of Nursing offers a
variety of health occupations programs since 1983.
Kaufman Chamber of Commerce president and CEO, Anne
Glasscock pointed out that Kaufman also is a Certified Retirement
Community, designated by the Texas Department of Agriculture.
To help further heighten the quality of living for its residents,
the Kaufman Chamber, along with the City of Kaufman and STAR
Transit, embarked on a project to provide a fixed bus route in
response to the number of citizens observed carrying large parcels
on foot from shopping destinations. In October 2011, the project was
deemed the best economic development project by a small chamber
in the state of Texas.
Perhaps what makes Kaufman such an ideal location, for work and
play, is the evidence of strong community spirit and hard-working
citizens and leadership.

Kaufman County Livestock Show: The Kaufman County Fair Grounds come alive each spring with
the activity of the Livestock Show in which students from all over the County showcase their animal, art
and cooking projects. The show culminates in a live auction of the placing animals.

Kaufman County Relay For Life: An evening fundraiser for the
American Cancer Society. Held each Spring, the event attracts hundreds
of volunteers who compete on teams to raise money and awareness
for people with cancer. The event, which kicks off at 7 p.m. includes
a luminaria ceremony, a survivor walk, a silent auction and on site
fundraiser at campsites set up around the track.

Annual Civic Auction: This annual event attracts 350-400 people to a silent and live auction with
hundred of items. The event is themed each year and boasts fast paced fun with lively action. The auction
raises money to promote the chamber activities throughout the year. Dozens of volunteers and the
chamber staff ensure the success of this event.
OCTOBER
Scarecrow Festival: Held the fourth Saturday in October the Scarecrow Festival marks the community’s
biggest attraction of the year. Designed to attract visitors and provide entertainment for local residents,
the annual festival attracts a large one day crowd. The festival kicks off with a parade that starts at 9am and
has over 100 entries including the antique tractor club. Featured activities include live entertainment, arts
and craft vendors, a children’s area, sports bike show and many more events.
Halloween on Houston: Hundreds of children of all ages gather on Houston Street on Halloween night
to trick or treat at the spooktacularly decorated historic homes. This tradition is amazing to behold.

Tree Lighting: The month of December starts off with the City’s Tree Lighting ceremony which highlights

without the lighted Christmas parade, festivities and the fantastic light
show on the Courthouse Square put on by the Kaufman Heritage Society.

Anne Glasscock is starting her
ninth year as President of the Kaufman
Chamber of Commerce. She and her
husband Kyle and their two daughters,
Marti (14) & Isabel (11) moved to
Kaufman in June of 2007.
Anne graduated from Texas A&M
University with a degree in Recreation,
Park & Tourism Sciences. Prior to the
Chamber of Commerce she worked
for the Dallas Area Chapter of the
American Red Cross. Anne continues
to volunteer for the Red Cross and serves
on the Supervisory Committee and as
an International Humanitarian Law,
Lifeguarding and Water Safety Instructor.
This past year she had the opportunity
to teach for them in Central America.
Anne serves as the Administrator for
Kaufman County Leadership Council
and is a member of the Kaufman Lions
Club. She also serves as Secretary of
the Kaufman County Crime Stoppers
Board. Additionally Anne acts as
the administrator for the Leadership
Kaufman County class, of which, she
is a 2006 graduate. In June of 2013, she
graduated from Leadership North Texas
Program, which is a graduate Leadership
program.
In 2012 Anne completed her
requirements to become an Accredited
Chamber Executive through the Western
Association of Chamber Executives and
is the only Chamber President in the
State of Texas to hold this title. In 2014

Nancy Heller serves as a part-time
administrative assistant for the Kaufman

Nancy joined the staff in May 2012.
Nancy and her husband, Brian Heller,
moved to Texas in 2009 after living
and working in New Jersey all their
lives. They are the proud parents of two
married daughters and have recently
become first time grandparents to their
daughter Janine’s new son, Greyson.
Janine lives and works in the Dallas area,
while Kristen, a fan of the cooler weather,

The mission of the Kaufman Economic Development Corporation is to make
Kaufman one of the most economically prosperous suburbs of Dallas and one of the
best places to work in North Texas.
KEDC is led by a five member board of directors headed by volunteer President
Roy Ferrell. The corporation leases space from the chamber and chamber support staff
doubles in the same capacity for the KEDC.
The KEDC developed a new matching grants program last year to help revitalize and
improve property on the Town Square, Central Business District and the Washington
Street and Mulberry Street corridors. Grants are available for new/repaired sidewalks,
driveways, parking lots, front building facades, signage and more.
The Chamber and Kaufman EDC cut the ribbon on the new 160,000 square foot
Walmart Supercenter and a new Whataburger in 2014 and broke ground on a new
15,000 square foot strip center in Kings Fort Market Center. A lot adjacent to the
center is now home to La Pradera Restaurant, one of the nicest sit down restaurants
in Kaufman County. The Kaufman EDC funded $400,000 of the western portion of
the new Kings Fort Parkway and has pledged approximately $1.5 Million towards the
streets, utilities and other infrastructure within the Market Center.
Kaufman also broke ground on the new Highway 34 by-pass in 2014, a project the
Chamber began working on in the early 1970’s. The Kaufman EDC provided a major
push over the last seven years acquiring donated right of way and pledging $1.7 Million

towards the project. Kaufman EDC also agreed
to an infrastructure/jobs retention grant related
to the project in 2014. The new by-pass should

are job creation, attracting new local option sales tax dollars to the city and
bringing in taxable capital investment to Kaufman, to accomplish that we must

infrastructure, mobility and aesthetics,” according to Lee Ayres.

by former Dallas County Sheriff Carl Thomas and
his wife, Susan, at the family home in Dallas, Texas.
A firm believer that entrepreneurship is alive and well in
this country for those who are willing to take a chance to
succeed, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas built the family business one
partnership at a time.

Help Center, USO, and Kaufman County Children’s
Advocacy Center. Wendy Thomas is considered one of the
strongest advocates for the law enforcement community and
often rallies behind their efforts.
Today, under the leadership of the Thomas’s eldest daughter,
Wendy Thomas, the company is licensed in over half of the
United States with offices from the East Coast to West Coast
and employs over 500 individuals nationwide. Enjoying the
community spirit of Kaufman, the family built the Corporate
Offices in Kaufman approximately five years ago.
Former District 4 State Representative Lance Gooden says

“I recall sitting in our conference room one morning about
a decade ago when Wendy announced that she wanted to take
the company to a national level,” acknowledges Carl. “Never
shy on asking for the order, she sought out an opportunity to
grow our existing customer base on a larger scale.” Within a
two year time frame, Ms. Thomas traveled across the country
examining in various states and retaining the necessary
company licensure. Consequently, the company changed
the paradigm and became a national player in the security
industry. As one of the largest, privately-held security
companies in the nation, Thomas Protective Service, Inc. is
now recognized as a major business in their industry.
Larry Minor, General Manger of Falcon Steel Company,

safety awareness programs, as well as loss prevention

Memory of a Loved One
Upon the loss of their loved one (Kaufman County
Sheriff ’s Department Patrol Sergeant Carl “Skip” Thomas),
The Thomas Family established the Carl “Skip” Thomas,
III Memorial Fund benefiting first responders who work in
Kaufman County faced with a life-threatening illness. In
addition, a scholarship was established to graduating KHS
seniors interested in a law enforcement career. “We wanted
to honor the memory of my brother in a way that he would
be very proud and would be of benefit to those he worked
with,” states Ms. Thomas. “We have experienced first-hand
the brethren and camaraderie of the law enforcement and
fire fighting community through our loss of Skip. If it were
not for their support and compassion during our greatest
personal tragedy, I don’t think we would have the courage to
return to our daily lives.”
