Parking in Groningen

Parking in the City?
Plenty of space!
Park your car at one of our eight P+R (‘park and ride’) sites.
Travel on the comfortable Citybus from the P+R straight to the
heart of the city and back again. Over 1.4 million people used
this service in 2007.
How the P+R Citybus system works:
Groningen is an attractive city with a growing number
of visitors. They include people who work in the city or
come here to shop or to enjoy a day or an evening out.
There is ample car parking for everybody conveniently
located and reasonably priced.
H
As you approach the city, follow the signs to the nearest P+R
Citybus site.

The Citybus travels in bus lanes for most of the journey, so it’s
faster than using your own car. What’s more, Citybus stops are
closer to the shops than the city centre car parks (marked ‘P’).
HOOGEZAND/OLDENBURG
Parking is free. A return trip on the Citybus for
you and all your passengers costs just e 2,(max. 5 persons). Parking time is virtually unlimited. The P+R site
in Zaanstraat is the only one that charges a parking fee.
There are 12 car parks in a ring around the city centre.
Together they have spaces for 4,500 vehicles. Follow the
‘P’ signs to the car park nearest to where you want to go.

A frequent Citybus service operates between
the P+R site and the city centre on Sunday
shopping days as well! (except P+R Peizerweg
and Hoogkerk)

RING GRONINGEN
Groningen’s attractive historical centre is largely what
gives the city its appeal. To protect the city’s heritage,
traffic needs to be carefully controlled. Parts of the city
centre are car-free or closed to cars at certain times.
But Groningen definitely welcomes car users!
STADSSCHOUWBURG
There are 12 car parks in and around the city centre.
You’ll nearly always find a space.

Groningen’s official Sunday shopping days in 2008 are March
2, April 6, May 4, September 7, October 5, November 2,
November 30 and December 21. Regularly on Sunday shopping
days there is either music or a children’s show on the Waagplein
square in the city centre.
Why not visit the market place? Market traders sell a multitude
of goods and have something for everyone. You’ll find lots of
Dutch speciality foods here. Or visit the numerous antiquarian
bookshops and specialist shops. To round off your visit,
Groningen offers you an array of cultural attractions and
gastronomic delights.
Groningen is easy to reach by public transport. From the main
railway and bus station, it only takes a few minutes to walk to
the Vismarkt via the Werkmanbrug bridge and the
Groninger Museum.
Looking for a
parking meter?
The streets in the city centre have a limited number of parking
meter spaces. The charge is higher than in the car parks.
Please note that there is a parking zone in the city centre:
along canals around the city centre
on many streets in the city centre
Parking only allowed in marked bays.
Parking charge E 1,80.
Mon - Wed from 09:00 - 22:00
Thurs - Sat from 09:00 to midnight
*
Parking spaces in the nearby residential
areas are not intended for visitors to the city
centre and this is reflected in the parking
regulations and charges in those areas.
Use P+R, car parks or parking meters instead.
