Setting standards
Ed. Züblin AG has become the number one building construction and civil engineering company in Germany. This remarkable development was made possible by a
simple, yet very effective credo: We find the best solution to each task. Since its
foundation in 1898 by Swiss engineer Eduard Züblin, the company has succeeded
by its innovative power, expressed in intelligent designs, new building materials
and progressive manufacturing methods. The success of Ed. Züblin AG, a company that is part of the globally operating STRABAG SE, can be attributed to the
creativity and commitment of 13,000 employees, who implement building projects
by pooling their resources. High class, in time and within competitive budgets.
Züblin believes in constructive cooperation. The knowledge of highly qualified
engineers, scientists and economists is pooled in special research teams where it is
shaped into complete services that set new standards through economic efficiency,
superior quality and environmental awareness. Modern partnering models ensure
openness and transparency between all parties involved in the project from the start
of planning to completion. Clear, contractually defined objectives, an early breakdown
of costs and regular controlling provide planning reliability and the possibility to
optimise processes. Over the course of many decades, sustainable and economical
buildings have been realised, from turn-key administration and industrial buildings,
bridges as well as spectacular tunnels or motorway viaducts, which are based on
excellent engineering knowledge and highly developed technology.

WE ARE MAKING HISTORY
THE FOUNDING FATHER
With this man a new era commenced in the building industry. Eduard Züblin was a
trained engineer when he founded his engineering office for cement-iron structures in
the Alsace back in 1898. He soon became aware of the advantages of ferroconcrete
and contributed considerably to the refinement of this building material. This led to
new areas of application and construction methods which again formed the basis of
our successful company history.
THE COMPANY
Since 1919, we have been honing our competitive edge in the construction
industry under the company name Ed. Züblin AG. A solid number of contracts with
numerous bridge construction and large-scale industrial projects helped us through
and beyond the Great Depression. Earlier than others we opted for electronic data
processing and extended our business fields in a continuous and solution-oriented
manner by adding special divisions such as environmental engineering and tunnelling. The ground engineering services we rendered during complex projects won us
additional national and international recognition. Our engineers set new standards
pushing the limits of technical feasibility with many spectacular projects.
The STAFF
Integrating the German building construction and civil engineering activities of
STRABAG in 2006 made us the Number One in Germany in this business field.
Today, our team is made up of 13,000 skilled members. With our divisions and
associated companies we are a high-powered company operating all around the
globe and generating an annual construction output of approximately EUR 3 bn.

are supported by ZT throughout the entire construction process, starting with the
early acquisition stage, through tendering and construction design, all the way to
site management. To further strengthen our competitiveness, ZT carries out technical
and interdisciplinary innovation projects with the operating divisions involved. However,
it also invests in external national and international R&D projects, this way promoting
the innovative power of our company. Important responsibilities assumed expertly by
ZT are the protection of patents and the maintenance and refinement of tools for
design and construction.
Superordinate tasks:
• research and development
• maintenance and development of tools for
design and construction
• patents
• human resources development
• in-house training
ZT with its personnel of about 650 is based in Stuttgart. It has 15 other locations
in Europe and also provides local support to a multitude of construction sites. ZT
is an attractive place for young engineers to start their careers. Here, they can gain
insights into the entire range of our business fields and activities with the goal to
later assume responsibilities at one of our construction sites. The wide variety of
our internal training courses available for the individual disciplines is very popular

CIVIL ENGINEERING
COMPREHENSIVE COMPLEXITY
Complexity calls for top performance. Civil engineering structures are thus a
particular challenge for all parties involved. We are your expert partner when it
comes to constructing demanding large-scale projects of the highest quality, in
an on-schedule, cost-efficient and yet attractive way. To this end, we apply costefficient construction methods and see to cost-optimisation and an exact timing.
As a renowned player in the construction industry we execute exemplary projects
that meet the ever-increasing requirements of the business world, also in the far
away future.
Our clientele comprises industrial enterprises, federal, state and municipal public
bodies and also private investors. Our service portfolio is tuned to the most diverse
customer demands and stretches from individual services, such as the construction
of industrial floors, all the way to the construction of turnkey general contractor
projects.

Even long-lasting, hydraulic engineering structures have to be modified or rebuilt due
to changed technical, hydrological and financial requirements. We build the required
retaining structures and weir systems for flood protection on the coast as well as
inland. Freight, container and cruise ships docking in ports become larger and larger.
New port facilities built by us create the conditions required to handle them. Extension
of inland waterways requires new crossing structures and lock systems. We also
have many years of experience in the offshore sector, for example in the realisation
of foundations for offshore wind energy plants.

Tunnelling
HIGH-PERFORMANCE MACHINERY
Work in the dark is extremely demanding. Tunnelling, in particular, requires tremendous skills and enormous experience of all people involved. With our engineers
and miners, who all have hands-on experience, we have been successfully constructing tunnels and caverns for rapid transit, underground, and railway lines,
roads and hydroelectric stations, as well as water supply and waste water systems
for more than 40 years. We have built hundreds of kilometres of bored tunnels,
walk-in pipelines using pipe jacking, and cut-and-cover tunnels around the world.
This wealth of experience enables us to continuously contribute to the progress
of underground routes. Therefore, the multitude of our technological innovations
in this engineering discipline constantly opens up new fields of application and
increases the efficiency of the individual methods.
An outstanding characteristic of our engineers is their strive for perfection. That‘s
why they challenge the status quo every day anew. The cost-benefit ratio of even
the most miniscule detail will be optimized and the construction process made
even more efficient. Technical innovations in tunnelling provide for new fields of
application and an improved efficiency of the individual methods – also in the
future: that‘s what our engineers aim at. As a result, today, it often isn‘t any
cheaper to have a tunnel built cut-and-cover than by boring it. Since the closed
tunnel construction method also offers considerable advantages in terms of tunnel
route, environmental compatibility and traffic routing, this method is chosen more
and more frequently.

GROUND ENGINEERING
FUNDAMENTAL MASTERPIECES
Construction pits, grout blankets or foundation slabs are of fundamental importance and are the backbone of every structure. Our Züblin Spezialtiefbau GmbH is
well aware of the great responsibility it carries and has managed to build itself an
excellent reputation in this engineering discipline. The range of services offered
comprises the construction of demanding immersed tunnels, turnkey urban
construction pits, as well as high-quality bored piles, diaphragm walls, anchors,
soil freezing, and grouting. In the course of infrastructure and traffic projects, sheet
piling and hydraulic engineering works are also carried out.
Also in ground engineering we are always striving for technological development
and innovation. We won‘t give up before we find the best technical and economic
solution for every single client. That‘s what our teams of engineers have dedicated
themselves to. During a project they work closely together and jointly develop all
details, from structural designs to work techniques. All processes are coordinated
and optimised. In combination with the wealth of experience, even the most difficult
ground engineering tasks can so be tackled.

STEEL ENGINEERING
ROBUST STRUCTURES
Highly loadable and still flexible – these requirements make steel engineering an
art of its own. Apart from technical know-how and experience, this engineering
discipline calls for a tremendous amount of creativity and craftsmanship. That‘s
where we count on our Züblin Stahlbau GmbH, one of Germany‘s leading steel
engineering companies, and NE Sander Eisenbau GmbH, acquired in 2011. Core
markets besides Germany for our complex steel engineering projects are mainly
the countries of Central Europe.
We service all the classical segments of structural steelwork construction, steel
bridge construction as well as marine steel construction. Providing the structural
design and the drafting of workshop drawings using CAD in our own technical office
are equally part of our service portfolio as are the manufacture and erection of steel
structures. With our monthly capacity of 1,500 t of structural steel constructions
we are one of the few companies capable of guaranteeing exact timing even for
large-scale projects. Having widened our service portfolio to include industrial
façades and complete construction, we now also offer roof and wall cladding – no
matter if with or without insulation or of the solid type. Being one of the first
companies getting certified in Germany, Züblin Stahlbau GmbH now holds the
manufacturer’s qualification according to the German industry standard DIN 18800-7,
as well as the newly established certification according to the European standard
EN 1090 -1, EXC4.

INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES
OPERATIONS AROUND THE WORLD
Vision, courage and an insatiable curiosity have been the keys to our success all
around the world. Since 1953, we have been implementing global projects and
have left our mark on many countries. Our international activities include infrastructure projects such as bridges, dams and tunnels as well as complex turnkey
industrial facilities, residential developments, office buildings and educational
institutions such as schools or universities.
What has been crucial for this success abroad was the focus on profitable core
markets. In these markets we co-operate with local subsidiaries and branch offices
that have the necessary know-how and local networks. During project implementation they are able to avail themselves of state-of-the-art technology on site –
supplemented by the know-how we have gathered in Germany. The support from
the Technical Head Office and experienced project and site managers guarantees
success for our projects even if they are complex. Young engineers, in particular,
benefit from our activities abroad. For them, work on a construction site outside
Germany is vital for their personal and professional development.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES
HOLISTIC APPROACH
Special tasks call for a special know-how. Selected subsidiaries and affiliates of
the Züblin Group complement our service portfolio – from chimney construction
to structural timber engineering or environmental technology. To ensure that our
expertise covers the entire value-added chain, Züblin maintains its own plants, e.g.
to manufacture precast elements.
CHIMNEY AND REFRACTORY works
As high as the structures are the demands put on this business field. Wind loads,
oscillations and environmental impacts need to be taken into account as do the
chemical and physical stresses due to the exposure to flue gas. Environmental
protection requirements and high demands on flue gas purification have strongly
altered the demands put on the materials used. In refractory engineering, the extremely high thermal loads on plants with furnace temperatures of up to 2,000°C are
further challenges to be faced by our engineers.
Our specialist companies OOMS-ITTNER-HOF and Behmann are renowned for their
know-how in chimney and refractory engineering among end customers and plant
engineers in Germany and abroad. No matter if refractory plants, masonry, steel or
reinforced concrete chimneys – the design, dimensioning, computation as well as
the construction and erection of your structure is always controlled by qualified and
skilled staff. And also when it comes to maintenance, repair and reconstruction we
are your expert partner.

Individual production, on-schedule delivery and accurate installation: The Züblin
precasting plants in Gladbeck and Karlsruhe add to our service portfolio by manufacturing structural load-bearing elements for building construction and geotechnical engineering as well as noise barriers made of reinforced concrete. Here, our
main focus is on always producing state-of-the-art components. Experienced staff
with longstanding know-how assist our clients with competent advice already in
the planning stage.
A specialty of our precasting plants is the development and use of the appropriate
concrete formulas and specially-structured concrete surfaces. This applies, in particular, to coloured and self-compacting concrete (SCC). We also produce extraordinary façade elements, prestressed components or rail base plates – and all this in
an unexcelled certified quality.

STRUCTURAL TIMBER ENGINEERING
Wood has unique physical characteristics and is a renewable raw material. No other
building material meets the ecological demands better, as our customers all across
Europe keep confirming over and over again. We stay abreast of this development
and have expanded our range of services in structural timber engineering specifically
and consistently through the integration of Stephan Holzbau GmbH as well as the
timber construction activities of the Merk Group. Züblin, as the market leader in
building construction and civil engineering, has set a medium-term goal of becoming number one in the European timber engineering market as well. This way, our
engineers promote a development that architects and investors have requested for
a long time, i.e. to plan and industrially manufacture wooden structures for a great
variety of uses. From supporting structure to building shell – our turn-key projects
become increasingly complex. We have the capacity to implement everything from
a single source.
STRUCTURAL REHABILITATION
In our structural maintenance works, we strive especially for economical process
techniques with methods that are adapted to the project at hand. That not only
means repairing structural damage, but also analysing and combating its causes
in order to maintain the structure in the long-term and ensure a lasting restoration
success. With decades of experience in processing, renovating and protecting
concrete structures, we can deliver impressive results. Our industrial floors and
high-grade floor coating systems will also meet the requirements of the greatest
challenges. Seamless, highly resistant to mechanical and chemical influences,
liquid-tight, non-slip, hygienic and low-wear – those are just a few of the special
characteristics of Züblin industrial floors. Innovative solutions such as corrosion
monitoring as a preventative early warning system or cathodic protection (CP),
which is successful in our company under the brand name capsys®, also help
maintaining sensitive reinforced concrete structures for a long time.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES
NOISE BARRIERS
Protecting the health of citizens is becoming more and more important in view of the
constantly growing volume of traffic on rails and roads. Therefore, we have developed
and produced noise barriers for more than 30 years. During that time we have
planned and implemented a multitude of construction methods for roads and railways.
We find customer-based solutions for all types of technical challenges. For example,
we have intensively promoted the research and development of protection systems
for high-speed railway lines over the past years. These systems are successfully put
to use both for German railways as well as internationally on numerous high-speed
traffic segments in China.
We apply our know-how as the system leader in Germany and inside the STRABAG
Group. In close cooperation with our Technical Head Office and the precasting plants
in Karlsruhe and Gladbeck, we offer all types of noise barriers for rails and roads as
