In addition to the traditional topics of glass machining and refining, the
primary focus of glass technology live will be on climate protection and
energy efficiency. Spanning a range of materials and disciplines, this will
incorporate the display and presentation of the newest products,
technology and trends, together with the outcome of the latest research
projects.
Alongside multi-functional glass, coatings and innovative glass design
techniques, glass technology live will also embrace topics such as heat
insulation, sun protection, photo-voltaics and solar thermal applications.
The special exhibition will also feature the most recent developments and
application possibilities in relation to insulating glass, windows and facades,
as well as a wealth of innovations for energy-efficient and integrative
building envelopes.
Complementing the special display will be a specialist symposium with
high-calibre lectures and presentations by practical exponents as well as
individuals working in the field of research, plus the architectural congress
first held at glasstec 2006 when around 500 architects participated in the
event prior to visiting the exhibition. This highly successful congress is
scheduled to make a repeat appearance at glasstec 2008.

DELO Industrie Klebstoffe ist Partner mehrerer Universitäten und
Forschungseinrichtungen. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Forschung zu Glasverklebungen im
konstruktiven Glasbau. Auf der Sonderschau der glasstec glass technology live vom
21. bis 25. Oktober 2008 in Düsseldorf (Halle 11, Stand 11B26) stellt DELO mit der TU
Dresden und der Hunsrücker Glasveredelung Wagener eine Ganzglasbrücke als
Technologieträger vor. Im Rahmen des Forschungsprogramms InnoNet werden
hybride Stahl-Glas-Verbundträger entwickelt
Dabei wird ein Doppel-T-Träger mit einem Glassteg aus laminierten Glasstegen und
zwei Stahlflanschen geklebt. Die Ganzglasbrücke spannt über eine Länge von 6 Metern
und ist für eine Belastung von bis zu 7,5 Tonnen bemessen. Die beiden l-förmigen
Hauptträger der Brücke bestehen aus Verbund-Sicherheitsglas, zusammengesetzt aus
dreimal 10 mm Einscheiben-Sicherheitsglas. Der Steg ist über eine lineare
lastabtragende Klebfuge mit den beiden Flanschen verbunden. Die adhäsive Verbindung
wurde mit einem transparenten licht- und UV-härtenden Acrylat von DELO realisiert.
Zuvor fanden bereits umfangreiche Belastungstests statt: Über die 6 Meter lange oben
beschriebene Glasbrücke, deren Unterzüge jeweils aus einem geklebten
Doppel-T-Glasträger bestehen, fuhr ein Traktor, der ca. 6 Tonnen wog (siehe Foto).
Darüber hinaus referieren Prof. Weller von der TU Dresden sowie Dr. Günther Witek,
Key Account Manager bei DELO, im Rahmen der glasstec zum Thema Verklebung von
Hybridkonstruktionen im Glasbau: Anforderungen aus der Praxis und Ergebnisse aus
verschiedenen Forschungsprojekten am Freitag, 24. Oktober, von 15.40 Uhr bis 16.10
Uhr in Halle 11.
Wichtig ist der materialgerechte Verbund zwischen Glas und Stahl durch eine
linienförmige Klebung. Dadurch wird der Werkstoff Glas als lastabtragendes Element
genutzt. Die konstruktiv günstige Querschnittsform und die Zusammensetzung aus
einfachen Einzelkomponenten machen den Verbundwerkstoff als innovative Lösung
attraktiv. Auch die Transparenz ist gewährleistet: Denkbar ist ihr Einsatz als
Tragsysteme der Gebäudehülle im Fassadenbau etwa bei mehrschaligen Fassaden
und Glasdächern, oder auch für Treppen, Podesten und Stegen ist möglich. Durch die
Klebung könnten Verbundträger in Zukunft automatisiert hergestellt werden.
Voraussetzung hierfür ist jedoch eine bauaufsichtliche Genehmigung, wozu im Rahmen
Forschungsprojekts noch sehr umfangreiche Langzeittests notwendig sind:

Sonderausstellung glass technology live zeigt erstmals Formate bis zwei Meter Höhe /

Das Glas besteht aus einer elektrochromen Sandwichscheibe . Ein geringer elektrischer
Glas öffnet die Grenze zwischen Innen und Außen. Das ist ästhetisch, aber nicht
klimatisch erwünscht, denn die Sonne heizt die Räume besonders im Sommer stark auf.
Wie energieoptimiertes Bauen mit Glas aussehen kann, zeigt das Unternehmen
EControl-Glas, Furth im Wald, auf der glasstec in Düsseldorf vom 21. bis 25. Oktober
2008 (Halle 11, Stand 11 E 07): Licht- und Energiedurchlässigkeit des neu entwickelten
Sonnenschutzglases lassen sich je nach Bedarf in fünf Stufen schalten. Auf der
Sonderausstellung glass technology live wird die Innovation erstmals in mehreren
Formaten und einer Höhe von 200 Zentimetern präsentiert.
Spannungspegel von drei Volt reicht aus, um den Ionenaustausch zu aktivieren. Durch
die nanostrukturierte Beschichtung färbt sich das Glas blau ein und reduziert die
Lichttransmission (TL) in der Verbundscheibe. Diese liegt bei Standardisolierglas
zwischen 15 und 50 Prozent.
Damit ermöglicht EControl jederzeit freie Sicht, ohne blendendes Licht und schützt
außerdem vor Hitze, denn auch der Wärmeeintrag verringert sich , erklärt
Geschäftsführer Dr. Hartmut Wittkopf. Der Gesamtenergiedurchlass (g-Wert) des
Sonnenschutzglases ist variabel und liegt zwischen 38 und 12 Prozent.
Energieoptimiertes Bauen
Während an der Außenseite an heißen Sommertagen bis zu 70 Grad Celsius messbar
sind, ist es an der Innenseite der voll eingefärbten Scheibe mit etwa 25 bis 30 Grad
Celsius verhältnismäßig kühl. Wittkopf: Kühl im Sommer, Wärmeschutz im Winter
EControl spart ganzjährig teure Klimatisierungskosten und ist ökologisch. Das
elektrochrome Sandwichpaket kann mit einer hochwertigen Wärmeschutzbeschichtung
und als Dreifach-Isolierglas kombiniert werden.
Bis zu 30 Scheiben lassen sich über ein Steuergerät mit einem Knopfdruck in fünf Stufen
schalten. An das Bussystem der Gebäudeleittechnik angeschlossen, kann die Steuerung
sogar stufenlos erfolgen. Außen liegende Sonnenschutzsysteme sind damit verzichtbar
vor allem in Bürogebäuden reduziert das die Wartungs- und Betriebskosten. Die
Entwicklung von EControl wurde durch das Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und
Technologie im Rahmen des Programms Energieoptimiertes Bauen gefördert. Bei der
diesjährigen Sonderausstellung glass technology live präsentieren wir das
Sonnenschutzglas in den fünf verschiedenen Schaltzuständen. Alle Gläser sind 200
Zentimeter hoch. Die Breite der Scheiben ist gestaffelt von 60 bis 120 Zentimetern , so
der Entwicklungsleiter Dr. Dirk Jödicke.

Gymnasium mit 125 m2 schaltbarem Sonnenschutz ausgestattet / Besseres Lernen
durch variable Licht- und Energietransmission
Kein blendendes Licht, kein Aufheizen der Räume 1.300 Schüler können überall
unabhängig von Wetter und Sonne ungestört lernen. Dafür sorgt am
Joseph-von-Fraunhofer-Gymnasium in Cham das neu entwickelte Sonnenschutzglas
EControl. Es besteht im Kern aus einer Sandwich-Scheibe, mit einer leitfähigen
Polymerfolie und nanostrukturierten Beschichtungen. Licht- und Energiedurchlässigkeit
lassen sich so durch eine blaue Einfärbung des Glases elektronisch steuern. Das
Gymnasium in Cham ist das erste Objekt, an dem das produktionsreife variable
Sonnenschutzglas zum Einsatz kommt.
Seit der Gründung im Jahre 1923 wurde das Chamer Gymnasium mehrmals erweitert
und umgebaut. Im Rahmen der Generalsanierung im Sommer 2007 wurde die
Fensterverglasung in den oberen zwei Stockwerken auf der Südseite durch die
schaltbare Sonnenschutzverglasung EControl ersetzt. Dort befinden sich unter anderem
die Kunst- und IT-Räume.
Gerade für diesen Unterricht sind konstante Lichtverhältnisse bzw. weiches Licht für
klare Bildschirmkontraste bei der PC-Nutzung unerlässlich. Bislang erschwerte immer
wieder die hohe Sonneneinstrahlung mit grellem Licht das Arbeiten und Lernen.
Konstante Lichtverhältnisse auf Knopfdruck
Mit den neuen Gläsern lassen sich jetzt Licht- und Energiedurchlass ganz nach Bedarf
und Wetterlage regulieren: Ein elektronischer Impuls löst auf der nanostrukturierten
Beschichtung der Sandwich-Scheibe einen Ionenaustausch aus (elektrochromer Effekt)
und das Glas lässt sich in fünf Stufen blau färben. Dafür reicht eine Spannung von
wenigen Volt. Diese Reaktion lässt sich auch in die andere Richtung auslösen und das
Fenster ist wieder klar und durchsichtig.
Die Lichttransmission des variablen Sonnenschutzglases liegt zwischen 50 und 15
Prozent. Bei der Regulierung bleiben störende Nebengeräusche aus, denn der
Schaltprozess verläuft geräuschlos und fließend über einen Zeitraum von ca. 15
Minuten. So können sich die Schüler jederzeit auf das Lernen konzentrieren.
Steuerung nach Maß
Über ein Steuergerät lassen sich auf Knopfdruck sowohl einzelne Scheiben als auch
ganze Fassadenteile mit bis zu 30 Scheiben regulieren. Wird die Elektronik in das
Bussystem der Gebäudeleittechnik integriert, ist sogar eine stufenlose Schaltung
möglich.
EControl-Glas passt in handelsübliche Rahmen mit Pfosten-Riegel-Konstruktion und ist
in Größen von 40 x 40 cm bis 120 x 220 cm erhältlich. Die Fenster im 3. und 4.
Obergeschoss des Gymnasiums besitzen bis zu sieben Glaseinheiten mit insgesamt 210
Einzelscheiben unterschiedlicher Größe. Vor der Produktion der Scheiben erstellten wir
ein detailliertes Aufmaß aller Fenster die charakteristische Außenansicht des mehr als
80 Jahre alten Bauwerks sollte erhalten bleiben , berichtet Dr. Hartmut Wittkopf,
Geschäftsführer der EControl Glas GmbH & Co. KG. Bis zu vier Fenstereinheiten mit je
7 Scheiben werden jetzt über eine zentrale Steuereinheit geschaltet.
Kosten sparen durch intelligenten Sonnenschutz
Durch die mit EControl verglasten Fenster sinken die Kosten für die Klimatisierung und
der Einsatz einer Verschattungsanlage erübrigt sich. Zudem fällt der Aufwand für die

Wartung geringer aus als bei außenliegenden Sonnenschutzsystemen. Ein weiteres
Plus: Im Winter lässt sich das Sonnenlicht zur Erwärmung der Räume nutzen. Je nach
Färbung des Glases liegt der solare Energiegewinn (g-Wert) zwischen 38 Prozent und
12 Prozent. Aber auch nach außen geht kaum Wärme verloren: Der Aufbau des
Sonnenschutzglases entspricht dem herkömmlicher Isoliergläser. Mit einem Ug-Wert von
1,1 W/m2K dämmt es ge¬nauso effektiv wie Standard-Wärmeschutzgläser. In
Kombination mit einer hochwertigen Wärmeschutzbeschichtung oder Dreifach-Isolierglas
sind sogar Werte von 0,5 W/m2K möglich.

Das neu entwickelte power glass® graphic display ist ein weiteres high tech Produkt der
glas platz gmbh & co. kg, made in Germany. Informationen werden hier über eine völlig
transparente Glasscheibe als frei programmierbare Laufschrift übermittelt.
Basis bildet die patentierte power glass® Technologie, bei der LEDs eingebettet in
einem Glasverbund liegen und durch eine leitfähige Beschichtung kabellos mit Strom
versorgt werden.
Die insgesamt 1024 weißen LED Pixel der Laufschrift lassen sich einzeln ansteuern.
Kundenspezifische Texte und Graphiken sind durch Spiegelung der Informationen sogar
von beiden Seiten des Glasdisplays ablesbar!
Einsatzmöglichkeiten bieten sich z.B. im Bereich Schaufenstergestaltung, Messe-/
Ladenbau, als Informationsdisplay an Bankschaltern, Hotelrezeptionen etc.

The newly developed power glass® graphic display is just another high tech product
manufactured by glas platz gmbh & co. kg, made in Germany. Information is displayed
on a fully tranparent glass panel and can be individually composed.
This product is based on the patented power glass® technology, with LED embedded in
a glass composite and power supply over an invisible conductive layer.
The 1024 white LED pixel can be individually controlled. Customer-specific texts and
graphics can be displayed on both sides of the panel!
The new power glass® graphic display is perfectly suited for exhibitions, shops,
showcases, bank counters as well as hotel front desks etc.
It has a dimension of 1430 x 427 mm and is available as a set including software, power

Die Sonderschau glass technology live - ein Blick in die Zukunft im Rahmen der
glasstec 2008 vom 21. bis 25. Oktober in Halle 11 steht in diesem Jahr unter dem Motto
glass and energy .
Organisator Professor Stephan Behling und sein Institut für Baukonstruktion der
Universität Stuttgart haben hier eine Präsentation geschaffen, die sowohl die
ressourcenschonenden heutigen Maßnahmen als auch einen Ausblick auf die
Technologie von morgen zusammenfasst.
Die glaszone wird mit je einem Exponat zu den Bereichen Wärmekollektor und
Sonnenschutz teilnehmen, und die Anwendung gg3 ausstellen. Dabei wird aber auch auf
die Transparenz und technischen Funktionen der Kristallschichten eingegangen.
Die besonderen strahlungsphysikalischen Eigenschaften der verwendeten
Kristallglasschicht führen durch die Lichtbrechung zur Aufnahme von kurzwelliger
Infrarotwärmestrahlung. Die Kristalle geben die aufgenommene Sonnenwärme als
langwellige Infrarotstrahlung wieder an die Umgebung ab.
In der Anwendung als passiver Sonnenwärmekollektor, z.B.: in der Vertikalverglasung
eines Wintergartens, liegt die Kristallglasschicht rauminnenseitig.
In diesem Fall wird die auftreffende Wärmestrahlung der niedrig stehenden Sonne im
Winter und in der Übergangszeit an den Innenraum abgegeben.
Der Innovationspark der Sonderschau ist in die vier Segmente Licht und Transparenz ,
Photovoltaik , Solarthermie sowie Wärme und Sonnenschutz unterteilt. Aktuelle
internationale Architekturprojekte und Glasanwendungen zeigen die Umsetzung und
Integration neuester Technologie bei Isoliergläsern, Fenstern und Fassaden und
informieren über die Konstruktion energieeffizienter und integrativer Gebäudehüllen
sowie die dazugehörigen Herstellungs- und Produktionsverfahren.

In Spring 2008 Grenzebach celebrated a very special day: the 20th birthday of
Grenzebach Corporation in Newnan, Georgia USA. On this occasion CEO Stefan
Grenzebach welcomed colleagues from the parent company in Germany and from other
affiliates of the Group as well as high rank guests and business partners.
Unfortunately the owner and founder of the company, Rudolf Grenzebach was unable to
attend himself, but in his speech, which was read by his daughter, the many guests
learned how the small American firm developed from humble beginnings into a
successful company with a staff of more than 100.
The affiliate produces the whole range of Grenzebach technology and together with the
parent company and the other sites in Germany, China and India supplies customers all
over the world.
The Grenzebach team was especially honoured by the visit of Georgia Governor Sonny
Perdue who in his speech emphasized the intense connection of the Grenzebach Group
with the State of Georgia. Congratulations were also offered by members of the US
Congress and the Senate, a representative of the German Federal Ministry of Transport
and many others. They all expressed their best wishes for a successful future to the
Grenzebach family, to the management and staff of Grenzebach Corporation.
The "Grenzebach Buam", a band comprised of employees from the parent company who
had travelled all the way from Germany for the occasion, entertained the guests who
celebrated Grenzebach's German-American success story.

Einen ganz besonderen Tag konnte Grenzebach im Frühjahr 2008 feiern: die
Niederlassung in Newnan, Georgia USA hatte ihr 20jähriges Jubiläum. Zu diesem
Anlass begrüßte Geschäftsführer und CEO Stefan Grenzebach Kollegen aus den
Stammwerk in Deutschland und weiteren Werken der Grenzebach-Gruppe sowie
hochrangige Gäste aus Politik und Wirtschaft.
In einem durch seine Tochter überbrachten Grußwort des Firmengründers Rudolf
Grenzebach, der selbst leider nicht kommen konnte, erfuhren die Gäste, wie sich die
Firma in Amerika aus kleinen Anfängen zu einer Produktionsstätte mit über 100
Mitarbeitern entwickelte. Heute ist Grenzebach Newnan eine wichtige Säule der
Grenzebach-Gruppe.
Das Zweigwerk deckt das gesamte Spektrum der Grenzebach-Technologie ab und
beliefert gemeinsam mit dem Stammwerk und weiteren Niederlassungen in Deutschland,
China, Indien Kunden in aller Welt.
Besonders geehrt fühlte sich das Grenzebach-Team durch den Besuch des Governors
von Georgia, Sonny Perdue, der in seiner Rede auf die enge, gewachsene Verbindung
der Grenzebach-Gruppe mit Georgia verwies. Viele weitere Gratulanten - unter ihnen ein
Vertreter des amerikanischen Kongresses und des Senats sowie ein Gast aus dem
Deutschen Bundesministeriums für Verkehr - , überbrachten der Familie Grenzebach,
der Geschäftsführung und den Mitarbeitern von Grenzebach Corporation ihre besten

Innovative object design with partial or large-area highly reflecting decor is
possible with ipachrome design. The new ipasol bright solar control glazing adds
to architects creative possibilities by allowing for coloured and hued designs and
the optimised iplus E product series that now features an improved solar factor. At
glasstec 2008 in Düsseldorf, Interpane exhibited new developments as well as
improvements of their established glazing products, which further enhance the
possibilities of sophisticated glass architecture as well as energy savings.
Modern architecture increasingly demands glazing products that not only feature energy
saving functions but also allow for creative designs. Interpane caters to this demand with
their new facade glazing ipachrome design , which now provides for spectacular object
design: the chrome-based multi-layer system (large-area or partial) makes the glazing
just as highly reflecting as a conventional silver mirror. A good example for this
technology is the John Lewis department store in Leicester (GB). It features a
transparent, elegantly patterned full glass double facade that is reminiscent of a lace
curtain. Apart from the integral, flowing appearance, it has another advantage: rain will
simply wash off any accumulating dirt. The decor applied using the sputter process also
serves more purposes than pure aesthetics alone, in which it is also provides solar and
visual protection and enables variations in the transparency. At night, the facade is
illuminated from the inside in changing colours, and thereby turns the object s
architecture into a spectacular event. ipachrome design can be turned into toughened
safety glass or laminated sheet glass (LSG).
Colours and hues
As of late, colour accents in solar control glazing is becoming more popular again,
especially in Asian and Arabic countries. For this reason, the ipasol product series has
been expanded by coloured and hued variants (grey, clear, blue, green, and bronze
shades), with technical properties that allow for a wide range of applications. Particularly
low g-values, coloured or slightly hued, minimum or expressive outside reflection
everything is possible. The solar factor of the bright products ranges from 21 to 50 per
cent. An example: With its blue touch and a g-value of 21 per cent, ipasol bright blue is
a particularly suitable large area glazing for buildings, where extreme solar irradiation
would lead to high air conditioning costs. ipasol bright white on the other hand reaches
a g-value of 50 per cent and is thus more suitable for buildings where moderate solar
protection is sufficient and more daylight is desired.
Thermal insulation plus increased g-value
Interpane s top-notch product for energy savings is the super warm glazing iplus 3CL.
Apart from an extremely good heat insulating value of Ug = 0.5 W/m2K, it features a
solar factor of 55 per cent and a light transmittance of 72 per cent at excellent colour
neutrality. In the same context, the well-established iplus E warm glass series has also
been energetically optimised. The solar factor (g-value) of the base products was
increased to 62 per cent.
Impulses for interior design
Glass as a building material is increasingly used for interior design purposes. New
technologies such as ceramic digital printing or design laminates expand the possibilities

for decorative glass designs. The Interpane trade fair booth itself has been designed
using ipadecor P here, real photographs are incorporated into the glazing by using
laminating technology. The glossy surface provides for a detailed replication of high
brilliancy.
New backcut anchor system: Precise and flexible
The safety glass works in Hildesheim, Germany, produce a new backcut anchor system
that is suitable for indoor and outdoor applications. Using bore holes of only 8mm in
diameter, the fasteners can be mounted fast and quickly. The anchors are adjustable
and are easy to install. Rubber buffers gently divert forces to the supporting structure, so
that the glazing is not subject to any noteworthy forces. After installation, the mounting
system is virtually invisible from the outside this makes for even, attractive glass
surfaces, regardless of whether it is used for facades or interior design.

The new John Lewis department store in the British town of Leicester is covered
with a dazzling, lace-like curtain that at night is backlit in 256 colours. It is actually
a double facade of structural glazing with a very elaborate patterning. With the
radical yet inspiring proposal to use a transparent, elegantly patterned full glass
facade as an outer skin, Foreign Office Architects (FOA), London, won the
competition for the design of the 25,000 square metre department store. The
facade glazing ipachrome design by Interpane allows for creative yet functional
optics: The design, which was applied in a sputter process, also serves as solar
and visual protection and allows for variations in the transparency of the facade.
The English town of Leicester is known for its multiculturalism. Every fourth inhabitant
has Indian roots. More than half of the youngsters there come from India, Somalia,
Jamaica, Bangladesh, Uganda, or Pakistan. In some schools, more than 70 different
languages are spoken. And Leicester s economy is booming restaurants, textile
factories, fashion stores. Now, the new John Lewis Department Store can be found
right in the middle of this illustrious society, and with its patterned, net-like facade it not
only gets many admiring looks, it also fits beautifully into this colourful city. At night, the
noble facade is illuminated from the inside in 256 different colours.
Structural glazing with design coating
Structural glazing provides for a particularly harmonic facade appearance, because the
mountings for the individual glass panes are invisible from the outside. The glass panes
for the facade of the John Lewis Department Store were lowered from up above and
were then horizontally glued. Apart from a very harmonic and homogenous optical
appearance, this also brings about practical advantages: Rain will rinse any possible dirt
off the glass facade. In order to protect the inside from outside views, but also to
maintain maximum transparency, a sort of 3D architecture was created. The facade was
equipped with double glazing, or two layers of the net curtain . In addition, the inner and
outer patterns were offset against each other. From the outside it looks as if the patterns
lie on top of each other in order to keep viewers from looking inside.
The pattern itself is a new, partial coating, which also allows for delicate, artistic types of
object design: Ipachrom design was developed and designed by Interpane in Plattling,
Germany. More than 5,000 square metres of glazing and 625 panes of 2.4 by 5.4 metres
each comprise this integral area. The pattern was designed in such a way to establish
flowing transitions in order to produce the appearance of a single unit.
The ipachrome design multiple layer system lets the pattern appear like a highly
reflective conventional silver mirror from the outside. Unlike other reflective coatings, this
one is highly resistant to high humidity. At the same time, the eye-catching ornaments
also serve as solar protection, with a transmittance of only 4 per cent. The glass panes
themselves are made of laminated sheet glass (LSG), which is comprised of two layers
of 10mm heat-strengthened glass.

Glass is the dominating material in modern day architecture, which places optical
emphases, and provides for numerous technical functions. Today, the glass industry
offers glazing with individual technical features that can be used for heat, solar, or sound
protection, as design components, safety glass, or as a part of solar systems. The main
focus in building is usually on saving energy, especially in these challenging times of
increasing prices for energy and raw materials. The strong differentiation between the
technical functions in turn makes individual consultation even more important.
Glass is no longer just a filler element, but is rather nowadays also used for supporting or
enveloping purposes. A closer examination of this multifunctional building material
requires a look at its historical background and also at the fast developments of modern
times.
An insight into the history of glass
Flat glass has been used as an enclosing element for approximately 2,000 years and is
thus one the oldest man made building materials. Due to constant developments in
manufacturing and refining methods, it is now also one of the most modern building
materials, with an unparalleled influence on the appearance of our architecture. Now that
this material can fulfil nearly any task in a modern building envelope, it has been made
possible to overcome the antagonism between the human basic need for protection from
the outside world and the demand for natural daylight.
Before industrialisation, flat glass was produced, e.g. by means manual methods such as
casting or cylinder technology. These were replaced by sheet glass and plate glass
manufacturing methods, which were used up until the 1960s. Machine methods had the
disadvantage of distortion and waviness. The manufacturing of the higher quality plate
glass was more expensive due to the necessary grinding and polishing. Although
enormous improvements have been made for both methods over time, the
disadvantages could not be totally eliminated. It became necessary to strike new paths in
order to cover the increasing demand for high-quality flat glass. In the early 1950s the
English company Pilkington Brothers developed an industrial solution for producing high
quantities of large glass panes of a consistent high quality and at a relatively moderate
cost, which was an almost entirely automated float glass manufacturing process. It was
in this way that glass became a mass product and was thereby affordable for everybody.
In the 1970s new energetic requirements arose, which were easily fulfilled by modern
glass. Until then, single glazing was the standard but had the disadvantage of extremely
high heat losses (Ug = 5.8 W/m2K). The development of insulated glazing and its quasi
legally decreed use as of 1977 led to a drastically improved heat-insulating value of 3.0
W/m2K.
As a result of the oil crisis in the late 1970s, the glass architecture at that time was
subject to increasing criticism. Uncoated flat glass was considered a waste of energy. An
ecological and economical milestone for more energy efficiency was the manufacturing
of heat and solar protection coatings by using thin film technology.
Interpane was one of the first companies to successfully market neutral heat protection
coatings. One example is iplus neutral (since 1982): It is considered to be the first
colour-neutral thermal insulating glass in glass history. The key to success was a special
silver coating. This technology is now the basis for the manufacturing of high-quality

thermal insulating glass.
Glass for windows and facades
At the beginning is the desire to design, not the respective function. The function slips

Apart from the primary purpose of a window, more and more additional features, mostly
application and structural solutions, have been demanded. As a result, we now speak of
functional glazing and facades.
Primary use (inter alia):

· transparency or translucency
· means of communication
· supply of fresh air.
Secondary use (inter alia):
· heat protection
· sound protection
· solar protection
· object and personal protection

These purposes, which are characteristic for windows, can be achieved by means of
special multifunctional designs. Sophisticated window and facade systems combine
technical demands with the creative freedom of planning. Such systems are a challenge
for architects and manufacturers. With the increasing demands on window and facade
systems, the demands on the glazing also increase in terms of quality and versatility.
Most requirements concern increased protection, which can only be achieved with
modern functional insulation glazing. Multifunctional insulation glazing incorporates
numerous such protective functions. One example is iplus city E for upscale residential
construction. It incorporates effective heat insulation with an Ug value of 1.1 W/m2K,
effective burglary resistance (safety class P4A), and good sound insulation up to 40 dB
(in window: sound proofing level 3.)
Depending on the design requirements, the potential of glass is not only in increasing the
transparency and, therefore, the quality of living, but it can also emphasise the vitality of
reflecting surfaces and the presence of structures.
Even during the planning stage of a building, the technical performance of insulation
glazing becomes ever more important. Whoever contracts out for windows and facades,
has to provide the exact physical data as a part of the technical specifications. In order to
be able to fulfil the versatile demands in accordance with the technical regulations,
co-operation among the architects, engineers, planners, and manufacturers involved is a
key factor, in which consultation becomes mandatory.

The developments in the glass sector are not at all limited to its classic properties, such
as energy savings and solar protection, but can also improve and change its stability and
surface. Many times, nature is the role model, e.g. in the case of the lotus effect.
Innovative solutions for decorative facade glazing are another favourite with planners. At
glasstec 2008 (Messe Düsseldorf, October 21 25) Interpane showed the design glazing
ipachrome , which offers new possibilities for creative object design by means of
large-area or partial coating. The multi-layer system makes the glazing just as highly
reflecting as a conventional silver mirror.
As product versatility increases, so does the need for architects, planners, and building

Die Brüder und Tischlermeister Bernd & Jochen Terporten stellen mit ihrer 2005
gegründeten Terporten GmbH wissenschaftlich getestete Farbbeschichtungen her und
vermarkten diese unter dem Namen isocolor®. Dieses Glas-Beschichtungssystem
ermöglicht die Colorierung von Industrieglas in jedem Farbton. Zu den
Unternehmensschwerpunkten gehören die Maßanfertigungen von Glaswänden &
Glasarbeitsplatten im Bereich Küche, Bad & Objekt sowie die Glasbeschichtung in
Lohnarbeit mit isocolor® für das Glaserhandwerk.
Ein weiterer Unternehmensschwerpunkt ist die Herstellung der Duo-Glaselemente. Unter
diesem Produktnamen stellen sie Glaselemente aus 2 Sicherheitsglas-Einzelscheiben

Weltneuheit gelungen. Was bisher nur undurchsichtig gelang ist jetzt auch durchsichtig
möglich. Durch ein spezielles Laminierverfahren lassen sich Dekordrucke so erstellen
das beide Glasseiten optisch gleich oder unterschiedlich, jedoch auch mit transparenten
Bereichen gestaltet sein können. Dies ermöglicht z.B. Glastüren nach individuellen
Wünschen der Kunden kostengünstig ohne Sieb- oder Rüstkosten zu erstellen.
In Halle 11 auf dem Glass Technology Live Stand der Uni Stuttgart stellt die isocolor®

Higher, bigger, farther. Beijing will be the metropolis of superlatives this year, and not
only because of the Olympic Games. Already in the run-up to the major sports event, the
city has caught the attention of the world because of numerous record-breaking
construction projects. World-renowned architects have given Beijing a new look in many
places and the multi-purpose material glass in its finest form, which was processed on
machines from Bystronic glass group has been greatly used everywhere.
The two L-shaped towers extend obliquely almost 240 meters
into the sky. Sky-high, they are then joined by a 70-meter high connecting element. Also
at second glance, the new landmark
of Beijing appears to be somehow twisted within itself more like an optical illusion than
a real building. Therefore, many inhabitants of Beijing already regard the CCTV Tower
as a wonder of architecture.
The CCTV Tower Is A Static Masterpiece
The German-Dutch architect duo Ole Scheeren and Rem Kohlhaas designed the new
headquarters of Chinese state television. Incorporating an area of 475,000 square
meters, the CCTV is the second largest building in the world with only the Pentagon
being larger in area. Currently, construction on the giant building is still in progress,
however, once completed the Tower will offer space for 250 TV stations having more
than ten thousand employees.
"Our contribution is in the façade", Gu Xin, Vice president at Tianjin CSG, one of the
largest Chinese glass processing firms, explains. Tianjin CSG's main business is
primarily the production of high-quality insulating glass, as has also been installed here
in the CCTV Tower. Gu Xin: "In the case of the CCTV Tower, double laminated
insulating glass panes were used. The manufacture of these panes is very difficult and
only possible with a lot of experience and in excellent production plants."
To be able to produce products of this quality, Tianjin CSG has relied on the machine
technology of Bystronic glass for many years. Gu Xing lists several reasons for this
decision: "After having bought products mainly from Bystronic glass, the quality of the
machines convinced us very quickly. Now, we can produce precisely the quality products
that our customers require. For this reason, we will use the technology from Bystronic
glass in future as well."
The World's Largest Terminal Building
However, the CCTV Tower is not the only building in Beijing that has reached
international fame. Airport Terminal 3, which was completed in March, is also second to
none worldwide. With an overall length of 3.25 km and an area of 170 soccer fields, the
gigantic steel-glass structure is unrivalled and can claim the title "The World's Largest
Terminal Building". Despite the dimensions, Terminal 3 is impressive with its filigree
architecture and its colours. The deep-red columns and the matte golden roof resemble
the imperial palaces and temples in Beijing.
Glass processor Wuhuatianbao is responsible for this successful combination of the
ancient and the modern. 80 percent of the company's product range consists of Low-E
glass. The company has delivered numerous glass elements for the new Terminal 3, as
Yang Honh Bing, President at Wuhuatianbao, explains. "The Olympic Games are a very

important flagship project for our country. Therefore, we are naturally very proud to have
participated in this project." Wuhuatianbao also relies on the technology from Bystronic
glass for the production of quality glass. Yang Honh Bing explains: "The production lines
from Bystronic glass deliver stable and excellent quality products that will last for the long
term. This reliability is extremely important in our business." The success proves Mr.
Yang right: Apart from Terminal 3, glass panes from Wuhuatianbao were also high in
demand for the execution of other Olympic projects and can, for instance, be found in the
new swimming arena or the Olympic Village.
Room for 91,000 spectators
Another architectural highlight in Beijing has been nicknamed "The Nest" by the Chinese.
They refer to the new Beijing National Stadium, which can accommodate 91,000
spectators.
In fact, the building with its numerous struts looks like an over-dimensioned bird's nest.
The idea for this unusual construction stemmed from Swiss architects Herzog &
DeMeuro, who already proved their love for the extraordinary with the construction of the
Allianz Arena in Munich. Another customer of Bystronic glass was also involved in this
project: Xinfuxin. Chen Quan Fu, chairman at Xinfuxin, explains: "The glass that we
delivered for the Beijing National Stadium was mainly processed on machines from
Bystronic glass. We are very satisfied with these production lines as they satisfy our
demand to be able to deliver the best insulating glass products. Additionally, I appreciate
the almost friendship-like interaction when we negotiate on new machines."
Even when the Olympic Games are over, buildings like the CCTV Tower, Terminal 3 or
the Beijing National Stadium are certain to catch many peoples eyes being impressive as
they demonstrate the almost unlimited architectural possibilities when using glass
material today.

Architektur beliebten Baustoff. Ob Innenausbau oder Fassade, die Verwendung des
transparenten Materials ist vielfältig. Insbesondere wo Personenschutz und erhöhte
Sicherheit kombiniert mit ansprechendem Design gewünscht sind, findet Sicherheitsglas
seinen Einsatz.
Diesen Trend hat Rüdiger Göpferich, Geschäftsführer von sitec.glas früh erkannt und
begann bereits 1999 mit der Produktion von ESG. Heute verarbeitet das Unternehmen
im badischen Waghäusel rund 250.000 Quadratmeter Glas pro Jahr.
Einscheibensicherheitsglas ist zwar nach wie vor gefragt, doch in den letzten Jahren
erlebt VSG eine wahre Renaissance , sagt der Firmengründer. Daher hat sich das
Unternehmen vor knapp zwei Jahren entschlossen, sein Produktportfolio zu erweitern.
Heute beträgt der Anteil an VSG gut ein Drittel der Produktion.
Die modernste Anlage im Markt
Die Anlage, auf der die Firma sitec VSG produziert, stammt von der Bystronic glass
Gruppe. Gute Erfahrungen mit Handlinggeräten aus dem Technologiezentrum Armatec
haben uns die Entscheidung für die VSG-Anlage leicht gemacht , erinnert sich Rüdiger
Göpferich und ergänzt: Das gute Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis und die Gewissheit, die
modernste Maschine im Markt zu erwerben, haben uns außerdem überzeugt. So
können Besucher in sitecs lichtdurchfluteten Hallen mit einer Gesamtproduktionsfläche
von 7.200 Quadratmetern die Produktion von Verbundssicherheitsglas-Scheiben bis zu
einer Größe von 2,60 x 6,00 Metern bewundern. Die blau lackierte Anlage first lamiline
passt perfekt in die Produktionshalle, denn beim Hallenneubau hatte Rüdiger Göpferich
diese Investition bereits im Hinterkopf.
Das Besondere an der VSG-Linie von Bystronic glass ist die hohe Produktivität der
Anlage: Ausgehend vom hocheffizienten Vorverbund, der die Glasplatten mit hohem,
gleichmäßigem Pressdruck und äußerst exakt aufeinander bringt, den Heizzonen mit
Infrarotstrahlern und Konvektoren entstehen pro Schicht bis zu 3.500 Quadratmeter
Verbundsicherheitsglas. Der Firmengründer schätzt insbesondere, dass er alle
Komponenten aus einer Hand erwerben konnte: Bystronic glass hat uns nicht nur den
VSG-Verbund in die Halle gestellt, sondern von der Waschmaschine über den Reinraum
mit Klimaanlage, die Rollenabwicklung für 16 PVB-Folien, den Autoklavwagen und die
Handlinggeräte alle zur VSG-Produktion benötigten Bestandteile geliefert und in Betrieb
genommen. Und dass die Bedienung dieser hochtechnologischen Anlage dennoch sehr
einfach ist, konnte Produktionsleiter Thomas Fuchs schnell feststellen. Mit Hilfe der
Software Laminoptic habe ich die Produktion stets im Überblick. Die Verwaltung der
verschiedenen Aufträge und die Erfassung der Betriebsdaten erfolgt über eine
nutzerfreundliche PC-Oberfläche , berichtet er.

Doch nicht nur die Technik konnte Rüdiger Göpferich überzeugen. Mittlerweile arbeiten
wir seit gut eineinhalb Jahren mit der VSG-Anlage und sind nach wie vor zufrieden.
Bereits während der ersten Gespräche hat mich die gute Beratung angesprochen. Im

The combination of translucence and protection makes glass a very popular material in
architecture. Whether it is for interior fittings or the façade, the transparent material has
multiple applications. In particular safety glass is used where personal security and
increased safety should be combined with an attractive design.
But it was not just the technology that convinced Rüdiger Göpferich. "We have now
Rüdiger Göpferich, Managing Director of sitec.glas, identified this trend long ago and
started with the production of SSG as far back as 1999. Today, the company based in
Waghäusel, Baden in Germany, produces approx. 250,000 sqm glass per year. "There is
still a great demand for single-lite safety glass, however, in the past few years, LSG has
experienced a true renaissance", says the company's founder. For this reason, the
company decided approximately two years ago to extend its product portfolio. Today,
LSG makes up about one third of the production.
The latest plant on the market
The plant on which the company sitec produces LSG comes from the Bystronic glass
group. "Our good experience with the handling devices from the Armatec Technology
Centre made the decision in favour of the LSG plant easy for us", Rüdiger Göpferich
recalls, adding: "The favourable price/performance ratio and the certainty of having
purchased the latest machine on the market were additional convincing arguments."
Visitors can admire the production of laminated safety glass lites up to a size of 2.60 x
6.00 meters in sitec's light-flooded halls with a total production area of 7,200 square
meters. The blue painted plant first lamiline fits perfectly into the production hall, because
when the hall was constructed, Rüdiger Göpferich had this investment already in the
back of his mind.
What is special about the LSG line from Bystronic glass is the high productivity of the
plant: Starting from a highly-efficient provisional laminate, which very accurately places
the glass plates on top of each other at high even assembly pressure, the heating zones
with infrared radiators and convectors, up to 3,500 square meters of laminate safety
glass are produced in every shift. The company's founder is particularly pleased that he
could purchase all components from one supplier: "Bystronic glass not only installed the
LSG plant in the hall, but delivered and put into operation all components necessary for
LSG production, from the washing machine, the clean room with air conditioning, the reel
unwinders for 16 PVB films, the autoclave car, to the handling devices." Thomas Fuchs,
Director of Production, soon found out that operation of this high-tech plant is very easy.
"Using the Laminoptic software, I am always in control of the production. Different orders
are administered and operating data are recorded via a user-friendly PC interface", he
reports.

Float glass
Float glass is an calcium alkali glass that is flat and transparent. Molten
glass is poured onto a tin bath (float process), by which the glass acquires
its exceptionally flat and gleaming surface. Float glass is also available as
colored or as an iron-poor glass, known as white glass.
Float glass serves primarily as the basis for further processing as functional
glasses. By coating with a special sheeting, it is processed as a mirror.
A special significance comes to float glass when it is layered with tin and
silver coatings through the so-called sputter-technique. This glass serves
exclusively for further processing as a heat or sunlight barrier, as required
by new energy conservation regulations.
Transparent float glass can be delivered in thicknesses from 2 - 19 mm, as
colored glass in thicknesses from 3 - 12 mm.

The fascination with glass lies in the myriad design possibilities that allow
this traditional material to always appear incomparably new. Clarity and
brilliance are not approximations as perrenial associations that come to
mind when one considers the term, "glass".
Our glass finishing lends itself to traditional as well as completely new
technologies. Silkscreen, annealling entire surfaces, ceramic, organic,

translucent and opaque printing: all of these are included in our factories,
which are equipped with state-of-the-art print technology. In almost every
sector of glass application, print technology is of great significance.
Schollglass can on the one hand implement customers' first drafts, and on
the other, deliver design suggestions from a company's own design team.
Our sophisticated rolling technology makes both elaborate edge and cutout
designs in glass possible, and also surface designs. In addition to
traditional designs, we accomplish the futuristic for partially or wholly new
applications. There are hardly any borders set against the customer's
desires.
Modern laser technology completes our finishing possibilities. Thus, schrift,
logos, and other three-dimensional motifs can be called into being. The
spectrum runs from intricate one-of-a-kind creations all the way to large
serial productions.
Completely new in the program is our composite material made up of glass
and "High Pressure Laminates". Gewe-bond combines the most impressive
brilliance and hygiene of glass with the myriad design copabilities of plastic
laminates. Also, we provide the entire range of bonded safety glasses with
colored foils or photo pronts.

Die Produktvielfalt reicht von einfachen Konstruktionen für standardisierte
Vertikalfenster bis hin zu hochkomplexen Isoliergläsern für technisch
anspruchsvolle Fassaden und wird abgerundet durch spezielle
Isoliergläser. Dazu gehören z.B. dünne Isoliergläser für den
Denkmalschutz, Isoliergläser für Notausstiege im Fahrzeugbau oder
Isoliergläser aus unserem neuartigen Leichtglas.

Ornamental glass
Ornamental glass, also known as cast glass, is, like float glass, a calcium
alkali glass, flat and translucent, but not transparent. It obtains its surface,
with or without ornamentation on one or both sides, through a
machine-rolling process.
Ornamental glass is used for ornamental purposes and is applied wherever
clear transparency should be hindered, without eliminating the passage of
light. It is available in more than 50 forms, in various colors, and in
thicknesses from 3 to 10 mm.

Many-sided product requirements lead to equally hetergeonous
requirements on our production possibilities. Individual needs in small runs
with short delivery times stand on our daily program exactly as do
warehouse-filling articles in large runs for which the most advantageous
prices are paid. Contracts for complex objects with "just in time" delivery to
construction sites are managed just like those for glass furniture, that are
provided in manufacturing structures.

In TERMOLUX K-SPECIAL a capillary layer of polymethylmethacrylate is
inserted between the panes on top of the layer of spun glass. Its thickness
varies according to the desired heat insulation value. This capillary layer
reduces the heat transmission coefficient by totally suppressing convection
in the space between the glass panes, while the layer of spun glass retains
the optical property of light diffusion.
TERMOLUX SAFE
TERMOLUX SAFE is a laminated safety glass incorporating a 1.5 mm
white spun glass layer. It can be made with float glass or with TERMOLUX
SAFE COLOR coloured glass, and can also be converted into insulating
glass as TERMOLUX SAFE COMBI. The maximum dimensions of
TERMOLUX SAFE are 123 x 270 cm, those of TERMOLUX SAFE COLOR
123 x 160 cm. The edge surround with a width of 10 mm is normally
transparent, but can also be supplied in an opal version. The spun glass
fibre layer of TERMOLUXis UV-stable since it consists of glass threads. It
assures unexcelled evenness of spatial illumination, coupled with the
excellent light-stability of spun glass.

The UNISHADE film system prevents the blinding by sunlight and provides
