The production of energy and its transfer are of increasing importance for the economic development of
the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The identification of new areas suitable for windfarming and grid
expansion are forming the basis for further growth.
Wind energy ensures
energy supply
Being part of the energy mix, wind energy is an important
element in energy provision and is expected in future to
contribute the largest proportion in the production of
renewable energy. The Northeastern region (MV) is a leader
in this development with more than 2,511 megawatts of
onshore wind energy generated by 1,672 wind turbines.

Following the installation of the first commercial offshore
wind farm in the Baltic Sea, – EnBW Baltic 1 with 21 wind
turbines (total capacity 48.3 MW) – EnBW Baltic 2 is currently
being installed as the second offshore wind farm off the coast
of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. With 80 wind turbines and a
total capacity of 288 MW, output will be further increased.
With an annual yield of about 1.2 billion kWh, EnBW Baltic
2 will be able to supply around 340,000 households per year.
A total of 35,000 megawatts are generated by wind energy in
Germany today. To transport the current from the north to the
urban centres, additional grid expansion is needed and this
generates additional investment in the state.

Grid expansion as basis
for further developments
The change in energy generation is gaining further momentum.
A milestone in 2012 was the commissioning by 50Hertz, the
current operator of the transfer grid, of the so-called “wind
collection rail” (380 kV Northern line) between Schwerin and
Hamburg. Over a distance of 88 kilometres, it connects the
substations at Görries in Schwerin and Krümmel near Hamburg,
forming the fourth domestic German East-West connection and
thus increasing supply security in the Greater Hamburg area.

In recent years, the wind energy sector has developed in
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with impressive dynamics.
Nationally and internationally operating companies from the
entire value-added chain can be found here, ranging from
project development and conception through production and
supply to servicing and maintenance. Foundations, towers,
turbines, nacelles and rotor blades – all products are “Made in
MV”. Here, optimum opportunities are provided for establishing
an internationally successful industry, from which both the
German coastal states and even other, landlocked states with a
strong supply industry can benefit.
Innovation
and new technologies
for more wind energy
The continuously rising proportion of renewable energy in
the energy mix requires the further adaptation of the energy
system to meet these new conditions. So, for example, energy
storage plants must be developed and installed alongside grid
expansion. In MV, the demonstration and investment project
RH2R-Werder/Kessin/Altentreptow (RH2-WKA) addresses precisely
this issue. Integrating a CO2-free energy storage unit into a
wind farm enables needs-oriented wind-generated power
that is available around the clock. Germany’s largest windhydrogen system, run by Wind-Projekt, provides important
findings for future CO2-free renewable reserve power
plants. In addition, the energy system is able to integrate
the sectors of transport, tourism, agriculture and industry
in the use of hydrogen, oxygen and heat. RH2R stands for
Renewable Hydrogen, i.e. for hydrogen produced without CO2
from renewable energy.

Europe’s first commercial battery power station with a
5 Megawatt lithium ion storage was connected to the grid by
WEMAG in Schwerin in the middle of 2014. For the first time in
Europe, an independent battery compensates grid frequency
fluctuations with balancing power via a fully automatic plant.
Thus, wind energy current can be safely integrated into the
existing grid.
Also in the onshore wind energy sector, the wind turbine
manufacturers from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, eno energy
and Nordex, are constantly developing their products.

Modern port infrastructures are the basis for the further development of the offshore wind energy sector as the success of
offshore wind farm projects depends largely on prefabricating the highest possible proportion of components onshore. Only
where a well-equipped port infrastructure exists can construction times at sea be reduced, limited weather windows be used
efficiently and construction costs be reduced effectively. And, following successful installation, a suitable land base is required
as a starting point for operation and maintenance activities and from which the wind farm is controlled and maintenance
teams can access the wind farm by ship or helicopter.

Science as a partner of the wind energy sector
The universities and universities of applied sciences in the state
of MV are scientific partners of the wind energy sector. Thus,
the University of Rostock supports the sector scientifically,
primarily with its Faculties of Mechanical Engineering and Ship
Engineering as well as in Computer Sciences and Electrical
Engineering. The Endowed Chair for Wind Energy Technology
initiated in 2014 to educate future wind energy engineers will
contribute significant added value to the growth cluster and
ensure adequate cover to meet the demand for a qualified
workforce. In addition, renowned research institutes such as
the Fraunhofer Application Centre for Large-scale Structures
in Production Technology, the Schifffahrtsinstitut Warnemünde
e.V. and the Institute of Applied Ecosystem Research participate
significantly in research and development.
The seaports of the state – Rostock, Sassnitz, Wismar, Stralsund and Lubmin – offer
many advantages on their quaysides
and are in the process of establishing
themselves as sector locations. As
installation ports, production ports or
safe havens they offer the necessary
offshore capacities.
The “Windpower Offshore Base Mukran”
will serve as base harbor for the
construction of the EnBW Baltic 2
project and the future Wikinger project
‘Iberdrola’. The individual wind turbines
are pre-assembled and loaded onto
installation vessels at the newly
developed site.
With an area of more than 750 hectares,
the port of Rostock is MecklenburgVorpommern’s largest seaport.

It is important for further development to link investors and the future operators of offshore wind farms even more tightly with
the maritime economy. Shipyards, suppliers and shipping operators are perfect partners here. The required installation and supply
vessels, cable layers and transformer platforms provide an opportunity for the yards to demonstrate their capabilities and so
to remain internationally competitive. With the construction of offshore converter platform and the newly built offshore service
vessel Wind Server, the Nordic Yard’s shipyards in Rostock, Wismar and Stralsund implemented first offshore wind energy related
orders and, thus, set important milestones towards entering this new market segment.

WindEnergy Network e.V.
Cooperation, networking and the expansion of the member
basis, as well as cooperation between companies and
institutions are the focal points. The association represents
its members’ interests toward trade association and other
organisations. Sector monitoring and the opening of new
markets for companies complement the activities.
The WindEnergy Network e.V. is Germany’s leading company network for the Northeast region and is a
nationwide contact for the offshore wind energy sector.
The network has been active since 2002 and, currently boasting 113 member companies, sees itself as a
platform for the entire value-added chain. It strives to strengthen the partner companies through active
lobbying, linking companies, bundling information, offering expertise and showcasing the network at
trade fairs. Its focal points are the settlement of wind energy companies to strengthen the regional added
value and the enhancement of the framework conditions for the changes in energy generation.
The common aim of all network partners is the further
development of the wind energy sector and its establishment
as an upcoming sector in the Northeastern region. Membership
gives you the opportunity to be part of a strong and growing
sector network.
The association is a founding member of the OFFSHOREWINDENERGIE foundation and it contributes regularly to joint
statements from the professional bodies that address state
and federal government and relevant ministries.
Increasing the acceptance
of wind energy
As a partner, the association supports the implementation of
the Offshore Info Center Rostock – Germany’s first permanent
exhibition on offshore wind energy. Under the motto “Wind
from the sea for clean energy”, offshore generation becomes
a hands-on experience.
WindEnergy sciences
The association supports collaborative research projects
between our network partners from science and business.
Research and development topics such as innovative
foundation technologies and structures are developed
jointly. Projects such as the development of a floating
offshore foundation represent the high degree of innovation
in our member companies. The association investigates and
distributes sector information, R&D results and arranges
contacts for collaborative research projects.
Intensified cooperation of the
North German wind energy networks
The four North German wind energy networks Wind Energy
Agency (WAB), Renewable Energies Hamburg Cluster Agency
(EEHH), windcomm schleswig-holstein (windcomm) and
WindEnergy Network e.V. (WEN) work together as the Offshore
Wind Industry Alliance (OWIA), thus connecting the North and
Baltic Sea markets for companies in the coastal states and
beyond. Together with the regional wind energy networks,
the association is a partner of the representative office in
Berlin. The OWIA represents about 600 companies, institutes
and organisations from this sector that are organised in these
networks. The federal representative office is tasked with
intensifying the bundling of political communication from the
North German wind energy networks on the topic of offshore
wind energy. It also serves as a direct contact on the ground
for technical and political discussions regarding offshore wind
energy expansion in Berlin.
WindEnergy campus
Staff recruitment and funding are the basis for developing
new members. The specific aim is the initiation of new,
sector-specific education and qualification measures. New
job profiles, such as for servicing and maintenance
in the offshore sector, offer potential for highly skilled
employment in the region. In addition, academic education
is supported at the universities and institutes of applied
science in the state. The acquisition of the endowed chair
for wind energy at the University of Rostock is a good
example of this.

The State Centre for Renewable Energies MecklenburgVorpommern (Leea) is supported by the network. It offers
exhibition areas for company presentations, conference rooms
and an energy laboratory for pupils that offers experiments
and research in an interactive world of experience, i.e. energy
you can touch. Together with six partners, the WindEnergy
Network has its own stand there to familiarize a broad
audience with the topic of wind energy.

The network serves as a platform for members, offering
a holistic representation and showcase of their expertise.
Public relations work and joint exhibitions at national and
international sector fairs and events – such as the future
conference Wind & Maritime – enhance perceptions of
the innovative and defining wind energy sector. Members

individual presentations, customer care and acquisition.

The Baltic-Offshore forum initiated by the WindEnergy Network
is dedicated to the special conditions and requirements of
offshore wind energy expansion in the Baltic Sea. The forum
– comprising of representatives of investors and project
developers for offshore wind farm projects in the German
Baltic Sea, of the grid operator 50Hertz, of the seaports and
of the ministries of the state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern – will
make a significant contribution to the success of changes
in energy generation. Topics and the content of Baltic Sea
expansion projects are channelled in close cooperation here.
Against the background of the planned expansion of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s energy concept, which is managed by the
Ministry for Energy, Infrastructure and Spatial Development,
members of the association have actively contributed to
establishing a state energy council.

Events
The association provides information about industry developments
and channels inquiries and contacts to its members. The website
(including an area exclusively for members) and the newsletter
offer the latest information and provide a forum for members to
post messages about their own company.
At own events, as the wind energy evening or the future
conference Wind & Maritime, that aim to enhance the
networking of in the entire wind energy sector (onshore
and offshore) with the maritime economy, members get the
chance to make valuable industry contacts, to present their
companies and to learn more about trends and developments.
The annual member assembly brings companies together to
make decisions about the appropriate further development
of the association.
Sector activities and public relations
The association represents its members’ interests in order to
accelerate sector development. The South German federal
states in particular have started new initiatives in the onshore
wind energy field, giving the expansion an additional boost.
Member companies can profit from this significantly. Events
such as the Wind Energy Evening thus serve mainly for
networking with South Germany. In addition, the association
contributes its point of view to the discussion and provides
public information in the form of statements and press releases.
Industry networking and exchanges of information are
essential requirements for the further development of wind
energy companies both within the state and beyond. To
enhance this, a “Wind Energy Roundtable” takes place in
a relaxed atmosphere at quarterly intervals. Companies can
even showcase themselves there exclusively as event partners.

The association offers its members a variety of networking and
presentation platforms. Specialist fairs, such as Wind-Energy
Hamburg, Wind/HannoverMesse or EWEA OFFSHORE provide
a showcasing opportunity as part of a joint exhibition stand

International cooperation with networks in Denmark, Sweden
