EDITORIAL
From devastating natural disasters, to revolutions that ravaged the
Middle East, and a fairy tale Royal Wedding, the year 2011 has been
eventful indeed.
The world is spinning so fast, we can barely keep up with it. The
rat- race continues! Tangled in our own little comfort zones, working
24/7, naming this schedule just a “bit” busy and trying to make it
25/8 is the norm of today.
Our daily lives have transformed into a race against time. Man is so
busy that he has no time for family; family dinner at the table is long
gone, now is the age of TV dinners.
Little acts of kindness, values and morals are fading away. The
rapid advancement of technology in the past few decades has
brought about a drastic change in society. Human interaction is
reducing as a result. Could this bring about an age where man will
become almost robotic? Man, initially, started racing against time to
gain the goal of fulfilling his heart’s deepest desires but, would it lead
him to a place where his heart does not feel anymore? To feel the
love of his race, the passion for life, the beauty of nature and the
Grace of the Lord.
The lives of today’s students are encompassed by studies, tuition,
exams and pressure – a lot of it. By being compelled to fulfil the
expectations of everyone, everywhere, should they be the puppets
that society dictates, losing the essence of and the time for
themselves.
If we are open to whatever comes our way and keep ourselves
aware of the world we can adapt to keep up with the fast pace of the
world.
Most importantly, “Be prepared!” whatever life throws at us, it’s
the best way to combat difficulties faced in the modern world.
“The world is moving so fast these days, that the man who says it
can’t be done, is generally interrupted by someone doing it”
~ Elbert Hubbard
Despite all of this, life at MC goes on. We invaded the roads at
“Walk for MC”. Our choir flew to Vietnam to participate in the 1st
Vietnam International Festival and Choir Competition where they
were very successful. After a lapse of seven years we participated in
the Shakespeare Drama Competition; although we didn’t make it to
the finals, getting into that mode would ensure future success. At the
school birthday, the teachers’ vs. Prefects Elle Match was held
instead of the usual Netball match. It’s been 145 years and Methodist
College still stands strong.

Prologue
(Read at the Prize Giving by Rebecca Surenthiraraj, 14 Arts C)
Good evening to all, welcome to Methodist College.
Today we’re here to celebrate hard work, strength and knowledge.
Just as we applaud our girls, we also remember
The mercy of God, who created all this splendour.
Yet, as we smile today, amidst our family and friends,
Chaos reigns and another, somewhere, stumbles to his end.
Catastrophic earthquake in Haiti – death and epidemics abound.
Chilean miners trapped for more than two months underground.
In Myanmar, Aung San Suki freed from home imprisonment,
Liu Xiaobo winning Nobel Prize, outrages Chinese government.
Iran’s nuclear power – threatening or sublime?
Rockets zooming back and forth in Israel and Palestine.
Enter Wikileaks, upon US foreign affairs to infringe:
One man, one keyboard, making world leaders cringe.
Red and yellow dazzle FIFA as Spain takes the World Cup home.
England wins T20 – leaving Lankans to atone.
Britain’s new coalition – Cameron and Milliband on pins,
Much sought after Prince William, Kate Middleton’s hand wins.
Sri Lanka promoted as a top tourist destination;
Indian Film Academy Awards in Colombo held, to great elation.
Ruling party victorious yet again at General Election,
After sustained losses, the Opposition calls for reformation.
Hambantota harbor completed, to widen boundaries of trade,
Amidst controversy and speculation, 18th Amendment silently made.
Terrorism defeated, yet corruption reigns abroad,
Threatening our progress, putting our futures on hold.
The All-Island Choir Competition saw MC as number one,
Victory at debates and MUN – hard work combined with fun.
Our drama contest for public viewing; six houses reaching for the sky,
Perseverance shone in all 3 shows – purple flying high.
Visits to the Vanni – changing lives, changing hearts,
A small step in the eyes of the world, but to us, a definite start.
Just as He gives He takes away; a beloved past Principal
To her Maker returns, in the school family irreplaceable.
Oh God, our strength and caregiver, keep us ever in Thy sight,
Today, tomorrow, everyday, may we always scatter light.

Principal’s Report 2010/2011
Rev. Dr.A.W.Jebanesan, Our Chief Guest, Prof. Ami David, members of the
Governing Board, members of staff, parents and students:
I extend a very warm welcome to all of you present at this Prize-Day,
when students who have done well in a wide spectrum of activity are
recognized and rewarded. It is also a time to reflect on and review the past
year, in order to plan for the future.
In August last year, Rev. Dr A. W. Jebanesan was inducted as the
President of the Methodist Church in Sri Lanka, and thus as the Manager of
our school. Our prayers are with him as he steers the course of our church
and school.
It is a pleasure to introduce to you our Chief Guest, Prof. Ami David, an
Old Girl of the school, who has extensive experience and achievement in the
field of primary health care and nursing in the United Kingdom where she
resides. Working her way up in every sphere of community health care to her
current position as Professor Primary Care & Nursing, London South Bank
University, she has held the positions of Director of Nursing, Therapies &
Professional Development, Non Executive Director of various NHS
institutes, Health Service Management, Nursing Directorship, Clinical
Directorship, secondment to the Department of Health, Primary Health Care
Research and Development, and Community Health council member. For
her contribution to the development of nursing, midwifery and primary
health care strategies and policy at Regional and National levels, she was
awarded the Commonwealth Fellowship Award by the Queen in 1995, was
made a Fellow of the Queens Nursing Institute in 2000 and was awarded
Member of the British Empire by Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II in
2007. She is currently working as external consultant to the NHS.She is
married to Paul David, a very loyal Old Boy of Wesley College, has two
daughters and, to use her own words, „3 fantastic grandchildren‟!
I want to tell you girls, that what impressed me most in her CV was that
she designed and developed 2 tools or models to help the system both from
the point of patient care and nursing care; one is the patient dependency or
acuity tool, and the other the skills escalator conceptual framework and tool.
Long term legacy to the profession is what I would wish all of you to leave
behind, in whatever sphere of work you choose in life.
Prof. Ami David has been an active member of the UK OGA branch,
within and outside the committee. She is the immediate Past President, and
had a very active and dynamic term of office. I thank you Prof. David, for
both your loyalty to your school, and for coming down all this way to grace
this occasion. We are proud of what you have achieved in this sphere in the
UK and look forward to your message to us today.
Mrs. Nirmali Beling, former lecturer, Dept. of Mathematics, University of
Sri Jayawardenepura, and a classmate of hers, will propose the Vote of
Thanks today, on behalf of the OGA. I thank Mrs. Priyani Fernando, another
classmate, for her continued interest in the school, and for the support and
encouragement she gives me personally, at all times.
During the course of last year, Mrs. Shanthi Peiris, Principal of the school
from 1968 to 1991 and teacher from 1959, passed away after a brief period
of illness. Mrs. Peiris‟ tenure in the school was marked by great progress, not
only in the infrastructure of the school but also in both the academic and
extra-curricular activities in every sphere. They were also troublesome times
with 2 insurrections in the South, civil riots, changes of government and
changes in national educational policy and curricula, but she ably steered the
school through it all. More than all this, by her very personality and
character, Mrs. Peiris made an impact on every student who passed through
her hands, and the large numbers of old girls who came to pay their respects
and shared their impressions through various social networks, is proof of
this. We thank God for her life and for her service to this school.
I thank the members of the Governing Board for their concern and
interest in the school and for the many others who serve in the executive
committee of the PTA, OGA and very specially, the MCES.
Staff:
The school has 103 academic staff members, 10 office staff, 8 Part-time
staff and 9 coaches. I am grateful to them for the high standards they
maintain and for their dedication in fulfilling all the roles & duties expected
of them. Mrs. Nirmala Cooray, Mrs. U. Suntheralingam and Mrs. A. Ganesh
obtained their Post- Graduate Diploma in Education at the end of last year.
I thank Mrs. Nelum Perera, who completed her first year as Vice
Principal, for the support she gives me. She has excellent administrative
skills and judiciously deals with the many and varied issues that come her
way. At the end of last year, two of our senior Sectional Heads retired - Mrs.
B. Ranjitkumar, the Tamil medium Middle school Head and Mrs. J.
Blanchard, the A‟level Commerce Head. Mrs. Ranjitkumar served the school
for 23 years and was an excellent Mathematics teacher in the Middle School
in both the Tamil and English media.
Over and above her classroom teaching, she also communicated good
values and ethics to the students. Mrs. J. Blanchard served the school for 21
years and was a dedicated teacher with good administrative skills. We wish
them both the very best.
We appointed two new Sectional Heads at the beginning of this year Mrs. Ramya Jayasinghe as the O‟Level Sinhala medium Sectional Head, and
Ms. Kanchana Jayaweera as the Commerce Sectional Head. They, together
with the other Sectional Heads see to the smooth running of their sections
and I am very grateful to them.
Mrs. Vasana de Silva in the Primary school, completed 25 years of
service in January this year. A very kind and methodical teacher, it must
surely be a record in the school that 3 members of the Rodrigo family have
served our Primary section as teachers- her mother Mrs. J. G. Rodrigo for
36 years, her older sister Mrs. Priyanka Mamuhewa for 29 years, and now
Vasana for 25 years.
During the course of this year Mrs. K. Sabesan, Mrs. R Maheswaran,
Mrs. B. Ranjitkumar, Mrs. J. Blanchard, Mrs. P. de Mel, Mrs. M. Firaz, Mrs
V. Jeyawaran, Mr. J. de Zylva, & Ms. A. Gnanamoney left the school.
Mrs. J. Kamalanathan, Ms. E. Vasudevan, Mrs. S Gamage, Ms. L.
Jayakody, Ms. L. Bharathi & Mrs. M. Colombage joined the school. I must
also mention here the retirement of 3 of our part-time teachers during the
course of last year- Mr. Premnath – the Combined Mathematics teacher, Mr.
Hemchandra - the chemistry teacher and Mr. Karunaratne – the Physics
teacher all in the A‟Level Science section who taught our students in two
media with great dedication and commitment. As a final act of dedication to
the school, they ensured that excellent replacements were also found to take
their place, and we recruited Mr. Tharmakulasingham, formerly of St. John‟s
College, Jaffna, Mrs. C. Samarakoon from Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Mr.
Illeperuma, former A‟level Head of Royal College and Mrs. Illeperuma,
from Visakha Vidyalaya. We thank them for their willingness to teach in our
school.
The staff had two in-house workshops and brain storming sessions on
issues they face and on Discipline, lead by 3 senior teachers, and two
training sessions led by Prof. Dilys Schoorman and Mr. Ajith Colonne.
The Primary school, lead by the Headmistress Mrs. Mala Mendis and her
dedicated staff had another fulfilling and fun-filled year, with World Water
Day, Grandparents Day, Book Day and their weekly class performance for
parents during assembly time on Tuesdays. I thank the office staff for all the
co-ordination they do for people within and without, particularly Ms.
TissaAratchy and Ms. Murugesu for the myriad matters they have to attend
to simultaneously.
The Hostel, under the care of Mrs. Hazel Corteling has 26 hostellers, 46
in the full-time Day Care, and 26 in the Day Care up to 1.30. The hostel has
a supervisory committee of 3 led by the Chaplain, appointed by the
Governing Board, who see to areas of need or shortcoming, in order to
improve it. I am very pleased that many hostellers are getting more involved
in extra activities and we had both a College Prefect and the Table Tennis
Captain who were hostellers.
At the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination 2009, 11 students obtained all
9 Distinctions, 9 students obtained 8 Distinctions and 37 % of all who sat
obtained 5 Distinctions or more.
At the G.C.E.Advanced Level examination held in August 2010, 3 A‟s
were obtained by 1 student in the Arts stream, 3 students in the Sinhala
medium Commerce stream and 1 student in the Tamil medium commerce
stream. 2 girls obtained 1 A and 2 B in the Biological stream and 14 girls
obtained 2 A‟s and a B from the Arts and Commerce streams. Of them, we
congratulate Nabeela Raji who came 3rd in the Colombo District and 8th in
the Island in the Arts Stream.
Prizes and Endowments:
Mrs. Prashani Rambukwella nee Wijesinghe, winner of the 2010 Gratien
Award for her novel „Mythil‟s Secret‟ endowed Rs. 60,000/= for a prize for
the Best Sri Lankan Children‟s Adventure story in all 3 media, titled „Hazel
Pearlyn Memorial prize‟; Mrs. Sonia Wijetunge donated the Scripture Prize
for Grade 7 in memory of Ivor and Lucille Peireis; and Mrs. Deepthi
Seneviratne donated a prize for General Information Technology in memory
of her mother, Mrs. Myrtle Gladys Malalgoda. Win Rendal, a very loyal Old
Girl residing in the UK, made an endowment of Sterling pounds 1500 to
award a scholarship to a needy student.
The auditorium was closed for 2 months last year and completely
refurbished to make it cooler and to give it better acoustics. I thank the
members of the building committee led by Mr. Mervyn Rebeira, and
comprising Prof. Niranjan Gunewardene and Mr. Chinthaka
Warnakulasuriya for overseeing, not only this big project but also 5 different
projects during the December holidays.
The School:
The school has 1870 students on roll. Ms. Sugee Perera, the Head Prefect
together with the school committee see to the routine discipline and order in
the student body. We mourn the tragic and untimely death of little Tirzah
Thambyrajah of Grade 3 last year. We thank God for the joy and mischief
she radiated around those who knew her and continue to uphold her family
as they adapt to a life without her.
Educational excursions were organized with the Junior Science
Association visiting the Nilambe Power plant, the Grade 14 students, their
overnight camp at „Meth Arana‟ Athurugiriya, and many classes going to the
Elphinstone theatre to watch Sinhala dramas which are in their syllabi.
The Debaters Forum retained their standard in being placed 5th amongst
the Colombo schools after 56 rounds of debates over a six month period. At
the Colombo Law Faculty tournament, organized by the Moot court and
Debating Society last month, they won 5 out of their 6 debates in the
preliminary rounds and came up to the Quarter Finals. We thank Suzi Beling
for continuing to train them every Tuesday. The Sinhala Debating team of
the school has also made their presence felt in two tournaments recently.
The Inter-House Drama Competition was held as public shows last year
and were highly commended by the judges as being of a very high
standard. The Commerce Association had a well organized Commerce Day
with 2 guest speakers and many schools attending.
At the Sri Lanka Model United Nations conference last August, two of
our girls Atarah Senn and Amana Jhan won Best Position Papers, and
Raaliya Hussain was adjudged Best Delegate. Raaliya also was placed 5 th in
the Best Debater rankings at the recent Law Faculty debates and was
selected to be on the 5 member National Debating team for the World
Debating Championships in Dundee in August this year.
At the Colombo Model United Nationals conference held last weekend,
Raaliya Hussain won the award for the Best Foreign Policy Statement and
Dilara Liyanagama received an Honorary mention for the Best Delegate
award.
Many times in my Principal‟s report I have deplored the selfishness and
self centredness of our education system, with occasions such as a PrizeGiving, enhancing that situation. Therefore I am very pleased to see the
direction in which the school has taken this past year, with many community
based projects taking place. Under the guidance of the Chaplain, Mrs. Doris
Thambyrajah, a team of 12 students went to visit 4 schools in the interiors of
Kilinochchi at the end of July last year. We were perhaps the first school to
visit these children and there was much exchanging of stories and reflections
on both sides. Again in December, at team of 20 went and had a program
with 40 A‟Level students from these same schools, donating stationery items
and uniforms. I thank the Chaplain for enduring personal discomfort in the
long journey and rough accommodation, in order to give our students
different perspectives and personal interactions.
In April last year we had a joint Art Exhibition in the Middle School with
the students of Wesley High School Kalmunai. Our students organized a 3
days program for these children who were housed in our hostel and the boys
at St. Joseph‟s College. This was under the initiative of CandleAid Sri
Lanka.
In August last year, the Prefects Body of Vembadi Girls School Jaffna
was hosted by our Prefects for 3 days, with a Prefect Day organized so that
the schools in Colombo could interact with them. I was very pleased with
this initiative as the students were hosted in the homes of our Prefects and
the sharing of personal space and lifestyle takes interaction to another
dimension.
In December last year, the NCC organized a Unity camp, bringing
together 500 students from different parts of Sri Lanka. Methodist College
was also a part of this program, and 60 students were hosted in our hostel
and a team of students were very involved in the organization of this massive
project. Even though all the girls in these various teams had a special
enthusiasm and excitement about the interaction, the Kathleen Reid Award
for Service goes to Roshani George who was very much a part of many of
the exchange programs mentioned above, and who I felt, truly had a heart for
the students they were going to interact with.
Under the Sri Lanka Unites program of the school, spear headed by
Malshani Delgahapitiya last year, 4 teams of students went to teach English
to 4 underprivileged schools in and around Colombo, every week for about 3
months. For this commendable initiative they won the Award for the Best
Student Exchange Programme; Shruthi Waduge won the Best Essay on
Reconciliation and the award for the Best Work of Art on Reconciliation
done by a small group of students.
For the A‟level group projects too, most groups chose to do projects in
children‟s homes etc and I know that one group even obtained 2 computers
free, installed them and taught the children how to use it, at the World Vision
Home in Dehiwela. My belief is that if we expose our students as to how the
„other‟ lives, sometime in their choice of career or employment, they will
remember what they saw and heard, and think of giving back to them, what
they so easily received because of their social condition.
Sports:
At the Divisional Meet last year, we missed being champions by 1 point.
We are proud that Yelani Dias broke two National records and set two new
Records last year, for Under 12 High Jump in September at the Junior Tarbot
Meet and again at the Women‟s Championships in October. Amasha
Goonewardene struck Gold in Putt Shot under 14 at her very first National
Meet. Sara Silva was selected to the Under 19 Sri Lankan team in
Badminton, for a tournament in Singapore last December, and was awarded
National Colours.
Christian nurture:
The Student Christian Movement continues to have a very good response
to the annual camp, from which students are ministered to and their
questions addressed. In a mix of teaching and social work, together with the
Junior Christian Association, they continue their work with the School for
the visually impaired, Elders and Street Children.
We are grateful to Rev. Shihan Fernando for conducting communion
services on Maundy Thursday, Methodist Day and a special Covenant
service in January this year. Rev. Dr. Jebanesan addressed our students on
the School Birthday in November last year.
I thank the school counselor Mohini Abeyratne for coming in to give a
patient ear to our students up to October, and to Dileeni Abraham who took
her place when she went abroad. Mrs. Abraham also had a series of
interactive time with the different grades and classes, discussing the issues
close to their heart and empowering them to safeguard their dignity and self
worth. Ms. Tamara Handy, also an Old Girl, who recently returned after a
degree in psychology and a Masters in Special Needs gave empowerment to
these children at class room level, and helped us in preparing Individual
Education plans for the students with special learning needs.
The school choir which leads our worship every morning at prayers, won
the Senior category of the Inter-School Choir competition held by the
Institute of Western Music and Speech in Sri Lanka last year. They are now
preparing hard to compete in the 1st Vietnam International Choir Festival and
Competition, under the direction of Sanjeev Jayaratnam, for which they will
take wing on Monday. We pray that they will have a safe journey and will
glorify God with the voices He gifted them. Although they will sing soon
after my report, you could hear their whole program tomorrow at 4.30 p.m.
in this auditorium, when they will sing informally for well wishers.
I thank all those who support me in prayer for, given the immense
pressures and stress in present times, it is impossible to run the school
without the grace of God. In particular I thank those not mentioned here,
whose constant and steadfast support have helped me immeasurably.
The school is now in its 145th year and I often wonder what our founder
Ms. Catherine Scott would make of it if she visited this school she began for
40 girls? The infrastructure, curricula, extra-curricular
activities,
technological and scientific changes would be astounding to her; but I trust
that the purpose and values she instilled, of service, of humility, of love, still
remain. And so we press on, despite the current trends in society which make
us doubt the values handed over to us, knowing that “we look not to the
things that are seen, but to the things that are unseen; for the things that are
seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”
Thank you.

Looking back on the past year, I realize how blessed I
have been to have led such a wonderful group of girls, who have
been with me and my very efficient Vice Captain, Sumali, in all
the school activities and competitions held thus far. We are
very proud to have had our very own Rigby–ites Zahara Raheem
and Roshenka Philip being appointed as a College Prefect and
Games Vice Captain respectively.
The Sports Meet fever spread among all the Rigby–ites
this February and their hard work and dedication were
rewarded when Rigby won the cup for the Most Tastefully
Decorated House Corner this year. I would also like to extend a
hearty „thank you‟ to all those who busied themselves by taking
part in house relays and other track and field events, even
though Rigby only managed to secure fifth place.
Nevertheless, our cheerful spirit and hard work allowed
us to win the Inter House Senior Group Singing Competition with
flying colours! Our Under 19 and Under 15 Netball teams
performed extremely well at the Inter House Netball
Championships and were also placed 1st and 2nd respectively.
I would also like to commend Zahara Raheem for emerging as
the Runner Up in the Over 15 category for Badminton. Roshenka
Philip was a Semi Finalist in the Over 15 category in Tennis. Both
“Parama Darashi Pawula” and “Amma”, the Senior Sinhala and
Tamil dramas respectively had the good fortune of being chosen
as finalists. And both our Sinhala Senior and Junior Debating
teams qualified for the finals. Rigby was also able to secure
Fourth place in the Inter House Swimming Meet.
Sumali, without you and your great love for our house, all
this would have been impossible. THANK YOU SO MUCH for the
great support you have given to me throughout the whole year!
Last, but not least, I would like to acknowledge that none
of this would have happened if not for God‟s guidance, help and
protection over all our Rigby- ites. Thank you girls for making it
my most memorable year and no matter how small you may be, or
how great the challenges may seem, always keep in mind to

Firstly I would like to congratulate Peshala Fernando and

Unfortunately we didn‟t fare well at the Inter House

The Debating teams of all three language categories must
be commended for their efforts; our Senior Tamil Debating
team was the winners of the Tamil Debate Competition and
Shaima Hameed was placed 3rd at the Senior Tamil Oratorical
competition.
The Inter House Sinhala Drama Competition was held
very enthusiastically. Although we didn‟t win, Kaumadhi Ruhanage
was awarded the Best Supporting Actress award and Nimna
Wickramasinghe was commended for her performance. The
Inter House Tamil Drama was also a glorious event as we
emerged as the Runners Up with Aysha Faizer winning the Best

At the Inter House Chess Competition Madara
Wijesuriya won the Over 15 Championship. The Inter House

2011 was a year filled with activities. We were able to achieve the
objectives assigned for the year. With an impressive number of members
in the Company, we were able to engage in a variety of fun filled
activities, while being mindful of the pivotal role that our company has
to play in the society, at large.
Some of our Senior Guides joined the “2011 Rally” which was
organized by the Girl Guides Headquarters in order to mark the 100th
year of Guiding in Sri Lanka.
The very special event in our calendar was our Campfire “ACT”
(Achievement, Commitment and Training) in order to commemorate
the legacy of 9 decades of the Senior Guide Company. At this event we
shared fellowship with schools which do not have a Guide Company or
Scout Patrol.
We organized a Children‟s Day Programme at the Dehiwela
Salvation Army Girls‟ Home which turned out to be a very memorable
evening.
By being a part of the Senior Guide Company, we have been able
to develop qualities such as team spirit, interpersonal skills, organizing
capabilities and to lend a helping hand.

“O give thanks to Lord for He is good: for His mercy endureth forever”

We were able to complete another year successfully through
God‟s grace. We are very thankful to Mrs. N. Watson, Mrs. D.
Appathurai and Miss. S. Daniel who were in charge of the JCA and
guided us in all the meetings we planned.
The JCA‟s main reponsibility is teaching God‟s word to the
middle school section through enjoyable songs, teachings and of course
thrilling games. For each meeting we had a theme like „a Cheerful Giver‟,
‟He is not risen today‟ and „Let the Lord lead‟. We also played exciting
games like Easter Egg Hunt and Hot Brick, which we all enjoyed playing.
We also visited an Elders‟ Home to interact with the people there and
give them some company.
We learnt a lot in JCA and we enjoyed it. We hope
and pray that each and every child who attends the JCA will experience
God‟s power and love and always remember that He said,
„My grace is sufficient for you‟ (2 Chron. 12:9)

I cannot explain how grateful to God I am for all the
marvelous things He has done through the SCM this year. With the new
committee for 2011 being elected at the beginning of the year, we
gradually grew closer to each other, thereby making it easier to pray
together and plan out our activities for the busy year ahead of us.
I must say that God had planned for all the holidays which fell
on Wednesdays of any month to be in between our meetings! He is
great indeed! Our meetings were either on the 1st and 3rd or 2nd and
4th weeks of every month, depending on exams and other school
activities. Our first meeting of the year received a tremendous support,
with a total attendance of 115 girls! God was great and worked
marvelously throughout the year; we never had less than 60 girls for a
single meeting! Nirmali Refuge, Cheryl Fernando, Mr. Prashan De
Visser, Mr Asiri Fernando and Mr. Mayuka Perera are few of the speakers
who spoke to us at our meetings and encouraged us through God‟s
Word. We also had creative activities and object lessons to add more
meaning to what we learned and to remember them.
Friday mornings of each term were usually spent in worship
beginning at 7:10. Worship in song has been a great way of ending each
week and praising the Lord for all He did through the week. Singing
different types of songs in different languages encouraged more and
more girls to spend their Friday mornings worshipping their Creator.
On the 8th of April we had a Sleepover in school, where Mr.
Perez Daniel shared God‟s Word with us. We also had a fun time of
games and singing and a Candy Hunt in the night! At the end of the
Sleepover the girls got their pillow cases signed to keep as a souvenir!
From the beginning of the second term, we began small prayer
groups where girls, regardless of whether they were involved in SCM or
not, met each Tuesday of the week to share, encourage and pray with
one another. These little groups helped all those who were in them to
grow in their walk with God and were a great source of encouragement
to those who needed it.
The biggest event for the SCM every year is the Annual Camp.
This year, Camp was held from the 30th of August to the 2nd of
September at the Y-GRO Campsite, Madampe. By God's grace, we had
more than 100 girls on camp. The theme this year was "ICC - Is Christ in
Control?" The girls were divided into groups which helped them get to
know so many new people. There was singing, dancing, acting and there
were games to add to the fun. Camp also included a worship time, quiet
time with God, studying His Word, and sharing and praying for each
other. We had Mr. Prashan DeVisser, Mr.Asiri Fernando, Mr. Refuge and
Revd. Roshan Mendis who shared God‟s Word and discussed interesting
topics with us. We thank God for the challenge He placed before many
of us through Camp to stand strong for Him, trusting that He is indeed
in
control
of
everything.
About a month after Camp we had Reunion where the campers
were able to meet with each other again. The speaker at this meeting was
Pastor Dishan from the Foursquare Church. We had a time of worship
and also a time of games. At the end of it the girls enjoyed food and
drink.
Even after camp, as follow up is important, we continued to
meet in our small groups every Tuesday – and some groups even
expanded – to encourage and pray with one another. A short thought
or a little message from God‟s Word would be shared by the leaders with
their groups, so that the girls could apply that to their lives and share
about it the next week.
The end of the year was also fun-filled, as we had our Christmas
program based on “The Wise Men”, on the 8th of December. There was
a time of worship as well as a “Secret Santa” during the program where
the girls bought and picked out gifts for each other. We also went
caroling to different hospitals, making the season a happy one for the
patients.
We are very grateful to Mrs. S. Rajkumar and Mrs.P. Rebeira for
their constant guidance, encouragement and support given to us
throughout the year! Special thanks to my wonderful and innovative
committee, for their zeal for God, and their hard work throughout the
year! Our thanks also goes out to all those who have supported the SCM
in prayer and in numerous other ways!
“To our God and Father be the glory forever and ever! Amen“

The year 2011 proved to be a very successful year for the Islamic
society. Regular meetings were every fortnight was filled with Islamic
studies, games, quizzes etc…Jamath Salah was also conducted in every
meeting.
We also were privileged to have the presence of two guest
speakers who came to educate our girls on the topics „Mowlood‟ & „The
day of judgment‟, which were extremely beneficial to all those who were
present.
We also had a successful Annual Ifthar Programme at the home
of one of our students, Saliha Hussain. We are thankful to her family for
making this event a success. Our annual Zakath was directed towards a
few students from Nabawiya Institute, Malwana, who also attended our
Ifthar Progamme. In addition two guest speakers along with the
committee members from five past committees were present at this
event.
W also attended many Inter-school Islamic Competitions where
our quiz team did very well. At the Amal International Annual Islam
Day competitions we won the „Quiz Championship‟ award and the
„Runners up/Best School‟ award. Also at the United Islamic Association
programme, our girls won the ‟second runners up„ title for Quiz.
Our Annual Inter House Islamic competitions held in school during the
month of October, was also a great success.
On behalf of the committee I take this opportunity to thank our
Principal, Mrs. S. Dias & our teacher-in-charge Ms. Z. Abubucker for the
constant support and encouragement which helped us throughout this
year. All praise to Almighty Allah for guiding & showering his blessings
upon the Islamic Society of Methodist College.
Finally, I thank all the members of the society and hope the enthusiasm
continues in the future too.

The past year was an immensely successful one for the JSA. We took
on the huge task of organizing an exhibition based on the Physics Syllabus of
Grade 11. All the Grade 11‟s participated in this and submitted a lot of creative
exhibits. Three exhibits were chosen from each class and the students who made
them were given certificates at General Assembly. We are very proud to say that
we got very good comments from our Principal and all the teachers.
The Association also planned an Eco-Friendly Card Competition
commemorating World Environment Day. More than 150 cards were
submitted and they were exhibited on Parents‟ Day in the 2nd Term. This was
also a very successful event and I would like to thank all the Teachers who
encouraged our students to participate in this and helped us immensely to
make this event a huge success.
A few of our members were also lucky enough to participate in our the
Science Day organized by our Senior Science Association and were able to learn
about Nanotechnology. We participated in the Science Day of the S. Thomas‟
College Mt. Lavinia and our Quiz Team was placed first in the Science Quiz and
our Powerpoint Presentation on “Space Exploration” was placed third. We
learnt a lot from this programme and had an enjoyable time.
Finally, I would like to thank our teachers-in-charge Mrs. G.
Wickramasinghe, Mrs. S. Mallawarachchi and Mrs. S. Maheshwaran for the
encouragement and support given to us in order to make the year 2011 a
productive year for the Association. I also thank the Committee and all the
members of the Association for their co-operation and hard work put in and
for their yearlong commitment.

The Senior Science Association met once every fortnight on
Fridays. We began the year with the election of office bearers. Many
competitions such as Quiz competitions and group activities were
organized at each meeting. We were the proud participants of many
Inter School Science Day competitions.
Our Science Day was held on the 1st of April 2011, themed
„Nano Epistimi‟. Dr. Mrs Nilwala Kottegoda added value to the function
by educating us on Nanotechnology. The event was very educational,
but we also had a lot of fun with games and dramas etc. A number of
invited schools participated in this event.
We would like to make this an opportunity to thank our
principal Mrs. S. Dias, for all the support given to us. Last but not least
we

The Commerce and Arts Association met once a fortnight on
Fridays during the fifth period in the school auditorium. The meeting
always consisted of group activities and quizzes to expand our
knowledge.
In June 2011 three teams (Sinhala, English and Tamil medium
students) from Methodist College took part In various commerce
quizzes and competitions organized by Wesley College and Nalanda
College. We were also invited by St.Thomas‟ College, Mount Lavinia to
participate in their Commerce Day.
A sum total of Rs.22, 900/- was raised by the admirable efforts
of our association members for the MC Walk 2011 – “Be a Light”, by
selling handmade wool dolls and friendship bands this June.
It should be specially mentioned that but for the efforts of
Ms.K. Jayaweera, whose advice was greatly valued, and the support of
our Principal Mrs.S.Dias, and the other teachers-in-charge Mrs. L.
Neelawala, Mrs. M. Shankar, Ms. L. Jayaweera and Mrs. A. Ganesh our
attempts would have been less successful. The rest of the committee is
also thanked for their hard work and sincere commitment.
Last but not least I would like to thank God for the support and
strength He bestowed upon us throughout the year.

The year 2011 has been a very interesting year filled with many
activities for the ENV Club. Although our club did not meet on a
particular day to plan out various activities, we were able to carry out
many events in the course of this year.
One of the daily tasks of the ENV Club was to grade classes
according to the level of cleanliness under a given criteria and
accordingly they were awarded with the „Cleanest class shield‟ weekly at
General Assembly. As a result we were able to spread the concept of
keeping one‟s class clean.
In commemoration of World Water Day, the ENV Club together
with the IT Society organized a variety of competitions for the students.
They were under the categories of poster, power point presentation and
photography and were all related to the conservation of water, in order
to make students aware of the value of water.
The ENV Club was in charge of cleaning the school before, during
and after the Walk for MC, and taking upon the slogan „Act like you
live here‟ as their motto the members did a thorough job of it.
Various plants were bought and grown all over the school so as to
make the school more environmental friendly and also to inculcate the
value of trees in students.
In order to spread this vision a „Plant a tree‟ competition was
organized for students of Grade 6, requesting them to grow various
plants in front of their class rooms, and was awarded accordingly after a
period of 1 month.
Last but not least we would like to thank our teachers in charge Mrs
N. Cooray, Mrs F. Gallage and Mrs M. Fernando for all the support,
advice and guidance that they gave us throughout the year.

The year 2011 was a successful year for the IT society. Activities for
the year commenced with the election of office bearers and thereafter a
meeting was held once a fortnight on Tuesdays.
Fun games, quizzes, motivational presentations were held. In
addition workshops on Photography & Adobe Photoshop were also
held organized by the IT society and conducted by guests well

The UN Club stepped into its second year with much
anticipation for the upcoming Colombo Model United Nations
(COMUN) Conference in March as well as the Sri Lanka Model United
Nations (SLMUN) Conference in August 2011.
Meetings were held every Friday and we even invited guest
speakers including our very own Koshala Mayan (UN Club President
2010) to help raise the debating standards of our members.
I would like to congratulate Dilara Liyanagama for achieving
Higher Recommendation and Raaliya Hussain who won the Best
Foreign Policy Statement in the Security Council, at COMUN 2011.
We weren‟t fortunate enough to win any awards at the
SLMUN Conference 2011. However, I would be right if I were to say that
the experience as well as the exposure only got better!
With a delegation of 26 this year, some of our members had
the privilege of being part of five special agencies; including the
International Court of Justice (ICJ), European Union (EU), Futuristic
Security Council (FSC), Security Council (SC) and the Human Rights
Council (UNHRC).
These specialized agencies, not forgetting the rest of the
committees, required a great amount of commitment. Amidst many
difficulties, I believe our delegation did justice to their respective
countries and committees.
We are planning on working on a social service project and to
continue it in the following years. We also hope to work harder with an
increased level of dedication towards a better performance at the
COMUN and SLMUN Conferences 2012.
I firstly thank God for His presence right throughout this year
and for being our ever present help and strength in time of need. I
would like to thank Mrs. H. Fernando, for her constant guidance,
support and advice. I would also like to thank our Principal, Mrs. S. Dias,
for her continuous support and for providing opportunities to develop
and display our talents.
My heartfelt gratitude goes to the committee for the hard
work put in, amongst their other commitments and responsibilities.
And last, but not least, I would like to thank our members and all those
who contributed in making our club a success!

The year 2011 has been quite eventful for our school choir. As the
latter part of the year 2010 was spent practicing long hours for the
International Choir Festival which was held in Vietnam in March this
year, practices were held almost daily during the first term. Finally, when
March arrived, all our hard work paid off as we sang in two categories –
Equal Voices Category and Sacred Category, winning a Gold medal and
winning the first category while bagging a Silver medal and missing the
Gold by 0.5 points in the Sacred Category. We owe all our success solely
to God, and sincerely thank our choir Director, Mr. Sanjeev Jayaratnam,
for being extremely patient with girls like us, and leading us to be the
best we could be!
Choir practices were held every Thursday of each school week
after the comp-etition, to keep up the high standard now achieved by
our choir, even though the College Service had been postponed to the
third term. From around September, practices became twice a week,
Thursday and any other day of the week, as we were preparing for both
the College Service and the Carol Service.
Just before preparations for the end of term began, we were
invited to sing at a fundraising event organized by the Methodist
Church, Nugegoda, which was on the 3rd of September. We began our
performance with „Joyful, Joyful!‟ going into the more tranquil „Ave
Maria‟ and ended with a bang, singing „Shine!‟
On the 2nd of October, ten girls from the choir were selected to
take part in an Acapella competition organized by Royal College. After
managing to practice hard amidst our busy schedules, we were placed 2 nd
Runner Up.
We also played our usual role at the College Service on the 5th of
November, singing “Ave Maria.” We had songs of different genres at the
much awaited Carol Service. We had been practicing since our return
from Vietnam, and the practicing paid off. Our songs were “Hodie”,
“Infant Holy”, “Oh, Holy Night”, “In the Bleak Midwinter”, “Crown of
Roses”, “Little Drummer Boy”, “Carols Rejoice!”
Looking back at this year – despite all the grumbling and
complaining by the choristers due to the numerous practices – it has
been fun-filling and fully worth it!
