Foreword
As the global economic crisis becomes ever deeper, the pressure on national and international value added networks has
increased dramatically in recent months. As the key indicators
show, the difficult economic environment in which industry and
trading companies are operating impacts the entire value added
chain and has particularly serious implications for the service
providers. Companies in industry, trade and the logistics service
sector must now critically review and if necessary revise their
internal processes and business strategies. By focusing on what
happens “on the inside”, companies can often organise their
structures and processes in such a way that they are able to underpin their long-term competitiveness in this turbulent business
environment.
Against the backdrop of increasing international integration,
joint action and cooperation with partners along the value added
chain is essential if companies are to respond flexibly and effectively to changing market conditions. Logistics can play a key role
in achieving this goal – by connecting interfaces, ensuring the
responsible use of resources and creating leeway for innovation.
This means that, in both operational and strategic terms, logistics
is central to the future competitiveness of today’s companies.

A conference and a gala evening shortly before the anniversary of a historic date: 20
years ago, on November 9, 1989, the wall between East and West Berlin fell and the
borders were opened. What better reason to “bring history back to life”. At the beginning of the festive gala evening, Dr. Joachim Gauck will recall the events prior to, during and following the reunification of Germany. Gauck is a theologian and served as
the Germany government’s Federal Commissioner for the Records of the State Security
of the former GDR from October 1990 to 2000. A co-founder of the “New Forum” in
Rostock, he was already actively campaigning for political change in the former GDR
and played a key role in shaping what has become known as the Peaceful Revolution.
Gala Evening
Since 1945 at the very latest, the history of Berlin has been inextricably linked with the
United States of America, this year’s guest country at the German Logistics Congress.
It was the USA that launched the Berlin Airlift and supplied the people of Berlin with
food and fuel in 1948/49. After the city was split in two by the Berlin Wall in 1961, also
cementing the division of Germany and Europe into two parts, it was US President
John F. Kennedy who helped to give the residents of the divided city courage and hope
when he visited Berlin in 1963.
The Gala spans a broad historical range – in the “Sonnenallee”, one of the Berlin
streets divided by the Wall. It was in this street that the ESTREL, one of Europe’s biggest hotels, opened its doors in 1994. Live entertainment in the Las Vegas style, the popular ZDF television show “Wetten, dass...?”, the
Bambi movie awards ceremony and world championship boxing fights have helped the hotel become the biggest event location in the
German capital.
You can “drink in” the very special atmosphere of this
location from as early as 6 pm during the get-together
before the official evening programme begins. Take
advantage of this opportunity to build your personal

countries.
A further highlight of the Gala programme is all about
trendsetting logistics: Jury Chairman Prof. Dr. Hans-Olaf
Henkel will be presenting the German Logistics Award

The United States of America and the
Federal Republic of Germany have close
trading and investment ties that are of
key importance for national and global
economic growth. The USA is Germany’s
leading trade partner outside the EU and
the biggest export market for German
products behind France. A total 3,000
German companies in the USA employ
almost 670,000 people – and more than
1,450 American companies in Germany
provide over 600,000 jobs. This special

Presentation of the Science Award for Logistics 2009
Close cooperation with real-world logistics experts and interdisciplinary objectives are two of the characteristic features
of successful logistics research, an area
that has developed into an independent
scientific field in recent years.
With the aim of promoting innovation in
the logistics field, scientists in different
specialised disciplines and with different
levels of experience work together and
document their research findings in publications, dissertations and postdoctoral
theses. BVL’s Science Award for Logistics
is presented in recognition of research
projects that make a special contribution
to the process of transfer between practice and science. Ideally, the award-winning projects should already have been
implemented in the real world or should
be in the process of implementation.
In this way, BVL rewards the work of
young scientists and also recognises the
support provided by the supervising insti-
tutes, who generated the decisive stimuli
and created the necessary framework for
targeted research.
The jury decides on the winner of the
award after the entries have been presented at the German Logistics Congress.

The Jewish Museum in Berlin is one of the famous buildings designed by internationally
renowned architect and urban planner Daniel Libeskind. Embark on a journey through
two thousand years of German-Jewish history; in addition, you will have a chance to
discover unknown facets of what is called Libeskind’s “emotional architecture”. Following the tour around and through the museum, you will have the opportunity to see the
museum exhibition or take a trip to the museum shop or the “Max Liebermann” café.

Cecilienhof Castle became known throughout the world as the venue for the Potsdam
Conference from July 17 to August 2, 1945. The conference entered the history books
as the last and longest summit held by the victorious Allies: the USA, Great Britain and
the Soviet Union. Tread in the footsteps of history – visit the memorial to the Potsdam
Treaty and the former residential quarters of the Crown Prince William and Cecilie, for
whom Emperor William II had Cecilienhof Castle built. After your visit, you can stroll
through the charming and varied Dutch Quarter and enjoy lunch in the “Fliegenden Holländer” (Flying Dutchman) restaurant.

Berlin’s history and contemporary art
20 years on from the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Bernauer Straße street provides a vivid
illustration of life in a divided city. Footage of people escaping through the windows
of houses in this eastern part of Berlin directly onto the street with its pavement in the
western section of the city went around the world. This is where the “Chapel of Reconciliation” was built after German reunification, and the chapel is today part of the memorial site. In the later part of the morning, you can gain some insights into the future of
Berlin as the city of contemporary art during a visit to a private collection.

One of the main goals of BVL is to promote a better and broader
understanding of logistics in the public arena. The aim is to let people know about the fascinations of logistics – and this is the idea
behind “Logistics Day”. This nationwide day of action took place
for the second time in 2009 under the motto “ Logistics paves the
way!” Around 25,000 people who are interested in logistics took
the opportunity to obtain information on and gain insights into our
exciting industry at 289 events throughout Germany. The success of
the event is also reflected by the 600 plus reports in the print and
online media as well as on radio TV.
So why not join the action on April 15, 2010, when companies from
industry, the trade sector and logistics services will once again
be showcasing the many facets and aspects of logistics activities
to the general public – and when logistics institutes and training
institutions will be presenting their research projects and courses.
Any company or institute active in the logistics field can take part
with its own event.
