LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
2016 FESTIVAL SEASON - SAVE THE DATES!
2015 has been an exciting year in the Minnesota Craft Beer world: The Land of 10,000
Beers at the State Fair was a huge success with the continued welcoming of new
breweries; there have been many brewery expansion projects completed and others to
look forward to, growlers are now available to purchase on Sundays; and Minnesota‑made
craft beer accounts for more than 10% of all beer consumed in our fine State. Autumn is
here and it is time to sample the bounty of the harvest. There are plenty of new seasonal
beers to enjoy as we transition into fall. I want to thank the Minnesota Craft Brewers
Guild member breweries, our allied trade members, our partners and you, the educated
consumers and supporters. Thank you for joining us at the 15th Annual Autumn Brew
Review, the longest running beer festival in the State of Minnesota. Cheers!

CRAFT BEER EDUCATION TENT
Educating the public about craft beer is part of the mission of the Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild. Beyond sampling craft beer at this festival, we have put together
a group of panels and educators that focus on various aspects of the craft beer experience. Visit the EDUCATION TENT to learn more about craft beer and chat
with people that are involved in making Minnesota such a great craft beer state.
1:30 P.M. - BEER! THE MORE YOU KNOW — WITH ROB SHELLMAN & MICHAEL AGNEW (ALLIANCE FOR BEER EDUCATION)
Join Michael Agnew and Robin Shellman of the Better Beer Society as they discuss the importance of beer education in the marketplace, both from a retailer
standpoint as well what you (the consumer) should be aware of. They’ll discuss everything from off-flavors, beer clean glassware, proper & improper pours and
general knowledge that every beer consumer should know. Our goal is to ensure that both retailers and consumers are on the same page regarding quality
and improved standards. An educated beer drinker is a better beer drinker.
2:30 P.M. - THE HISTORY OF GRAIN BELT BREWERY — WITH JEFF LONTO, NORTH STAR CHAPTER BREWERIANA COLLECTORS CLUB
Explore the history of the Grain Belt Brewery to learn about this iconic Minneapolis brewery, the beers it produced and its impact on the state’s brewing scene
and more. Jeff Lonto of the North Star Chapter Breweriana Collectors Club will also present fantastic images of the brewery from its prime.
3:00 P.M. - HISTORIC GRAIN BELT SITE TOURS — WITH BEER HISTORIAN DOUG HOVERSON
Sign up for this engaging walking tour at the Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild education tent. Tours start at the education tent.
3:30 P.M. - “BREWCATIONS” — BEER TOURISM WITH DAN JUSTESEN OF BRYN MAWR BREWING CO.
Visit the wonderful world of beer tourism from Prague to Ireland to Duluth with Bryn Mawr Brewing Co.’s Dan Justesen. While Oktoberfest in Munich is
the original and the juggernaut of beer tourism, this presentation illustrates that if you build a better mouse trap (or beer party) the world will beat a path to
your door.
4:30 P.M. - CREATING A BEER RECIPE AT THE COMMERCIAL LEVEL — WITH BROC KREKELBERG OF BADGER HILL BREWING COMPANY
Learn how to design a beer for taste, feel, aroma and appearance. Broc Krekelberg of Badger Hill Brewing, a GABF gold-winning brewer, will guide the process
in making a beer that is ingredient and sensory focused.

AUTUMN BREW REVIEW is an opportunity to
sample hundreds of craft beers from great
brewers both local and not-so-local. Make the
most of it by taking the time to savor the flavor.
With every beer you taste follow this simple
three-step process: smell, see, sample.
SMELL – Don’t be shy. Stick your nose deep
in the glass and take a big whiff. Breathe in
the bright earth, spice and citrus of the hops.
Let the cereal smells of malted grains overtake
your senses. Yeast too brings smells; fruit,
spice, sulfur, sour and funk.
SEE – Hold your glass up to the light. Take
note of each beer’s jewel-like color and
pristine clarity (or the stylistic lack thereof).
Brewers take great pains to raise that frothy
head. Give them back a moment of your time
to admire its texture, color and duration.
SAMPLE – Finally you taste the beer. The
sensation is so much sweeter for having
indulged the first two steps. Let the sample sit
a moment on your tongue. Is it a malty beer or
do the hops hold sway? Perhaps it’s yeast that
takes the day. And is that a subtle hint of spice
that lurks in the background?
