From the Deacon’s Desk
Dear Friends:
In our Gospel story today, Jesus has returned to his native Nazareth along
with his disciples. When the Sabbath came, he went to teach in the
synagogue as he had done all through his journeys in Galilee. Only this
time something different happened. The people were surprised at how
much he knew. The people asked where he got all his wisdom. How can
he do these mighty things? Isn’t he the son of Mary and Joseph, a simple
carpenter? Then they became offended, probably because he knew more
than they did. Jesus was unable to do any mighty works in his hometown,
and so he left to go to a more receptive place.
Sometimes it’s hard for us to be disciples of Jesus, especially when we are
talking to our own families, our children, our parents or our friends.
Sometimes when we talk about our faith or something new we learned
about Jesus, we are made fun of and scoffed at just as Jesus was. Jesus
tells us through his ministry not to be afraid. He tells us to have courage
and do what we know is right; and that is to spread his Gospel to anyone
who will listen. He never said it would be easy, he just said to do it and not
be afraid.
This weekend we celebrate the independence of our country. Please take
a moment to thank God for all we have in this country, for those who gave
their lives in our defense, and for those who are on the front lines today
as we celebrate picnics and fireworks.

My name is Olivia. I am fourteen years
old, the same age my mother was when
she became pregnant with me. Instead of
choosing abortion, my birth mother put me
up for adoption. There was no way that
she could have taken care of me because,
at age 15, she was still in school and her
mother worked full time. I feel extremely
lucky that my birth mother made this
choice because otherwise, I probably
wouldn’t be here at all. I feel blessed that I
have been welcomed into a loving, caring
family that wants me to do my best and
succeed in life. Adoption has saved so
many lives. Through adoption, children
are given a chance at life and a chance to
make contributions to society. Hopefully
women who are pregnant will realize that
their child is a remarkable gift that is
waiting to be born. I have expressed my
support for adoption by attending the
March for Life in Washington, D.C. each
year since the second grade. I ask you to
think about my story before you think
about an abortion.
- Olivia
What a blessing it is to have this beautiful
teenager share with us her story. We are
so often bombarded with all of the ‘issues’
that it is so refreshing to hear from
someone so young who very succinctly
gives us a glimpse into her life and her
thoughts about her life’s journey. After
reading Olivia’s reflection please take the
time to not only lift her up in prayer, but
also lift up her birth mom. How much
pressure her birth mom must have felt,
especially that she was just 15 years old!
If you can put yourself in her 15 year old
body and mind, you can only imagine how
much courage and strength she must
have had to go through with the
pregnancy and then hand over her baby
to total strangers. Praise God for giving
her those gifts so that her greatest gift, her
daughter, Olivia, is here to witness to us
all!
