Medical technology is one of the largest and most important segments in the german health care industry. this sector is characterized by a strong capacity for innovation and the long-term orientation of many small and medium family businesses. these two factors for success have transformed germany’s medical technology
into a globally recognized industry. of the eUr 20 billion in revenue generated by
german companies in 2010, approximately 64 percent came from abroad.
In this publication, companies looking to sustainably expand their activities to growing markets across the globe have an opportunity to present themselves. “Health
– Made in germany” highlights the expertise and entrepreneurial engagement that
german companies and their global partners develop together. this publication’s
title also represents the export Initiative for the german Health care Industry, a
program to expand the international network of export-oriented companies and
supporting institutions. germany trade & Invest, as the foreign trade and investment promotion agency of the Federal republic, is tasked with the implementation
of this initiative.

* the Medical Standards committee
(naMed) in DIn e.V., which develops
medical product and devices’ standards
to provide patients, users and third parties with a high level of protection, and
ensures devices function as specified by
the manufacturer.
* the tÜV carries out regular monitoring
and issues certificates for medical and
healthcare facilities (quality management and control).
* germany complies with eU directives for
development and licensing of biopharmaceuticals, and pharmaceutical and
medical products.

safely, even under extreme conditions and
over long periods of time to ensure that
customer expectations of every single

historical overview
Centuries of Growth Have Shaped the German Healthcare
System. German Healthcare Milestones of Global Influence:
1710 Berlin’s charité hospital is founded. In 2003, the medical
faculties at Berlin’s Humboldt University and the Free University
were merged and are now called charité – Universitätsmedizin.
the merger has made charité one of europe’s largest university
hospitals.
1810 Samuel Hahnemann published the first book on homeopathic
medicine.
1850 Hermann von Helmholtz invented the ophthalmoscope, paving
the way for the development of modern ophthalmology.
1854 Physiologist Karl von Vierordt developed the sphygmograph
to measure arterial pulse.
1882 robert Koch identified the pathogen that causes
tuberculosis.
1895 german physicist Wilhelm conrad röntgen discovered x-rays.
1897 chemist and pharmacist Felix Hoffmann succeeded in manufacturing a chemically pure, stable form of acetylsalicylic acid.
aspirin was born.
1901 emil von Behring discovered the antitoxin for one of the most
dangerous childhood illnesses of the 19th century, diphtheria.
on the basis of von Behring’s work, Paul ehrlich succeeded in
vaccinating people against the disease.
1903 german surgeon Ferdinand Sauerbruch develops
the differential pressure chamber, making lung surgery
possible.
1924 Using an artificial kidney, internist georg Haas carried
out hemodialysis for the first time.
1929 Hans Berger developed electroencephalography (eeg),
a technique and device for measuring brain waves.
1957 carl Zeiss – working in cooperation with gerd Meyer –
developed the xenon light photocoagulator,
the predecessor of the optical laser.
1962 Dr. Bernd Braun invented the first intravenous catheter,
the Braunüle ® B. Braun.
1990 two different healthcare systems are successfully merged
after german reunification.
2008 Harald zur Hausen is awarded the 16th nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of the role of papilloma viruses
in causing cervical cancer.

Traditionally, the german medical technology industry has been very exportoriented. at the present time, some 65
percent of the entire profits of germany’s
med-tech industry are generated in foreign
markets. exports are particularly important to germany’s small and mid-sized
med-tech companies. Many of them have
developed into firms that are represented
world-wide.
the german medical technology industry is
very diverse. It encompasses a wide range
of medical devices, systems and processes
that save lives, heal and improve people’s
quality of life. among these are technolo-
gies for diagnostics, surgery, intensive
medicine, implants, prostheses, bandages,
medical aids, surgical materials and processes used in dental medicine.
the sector is highly dynamic and innovative. about a third of the profits are generated with products that are less than three
years old. Furthermore, about nine percent of turnover is invested in r&D – a far
greater proportion than average for manufacturing. germany has a large number of
highly-trained and educated medical professionals in seminal fields. researchers
and engineers, as well as a high standard
of clinical research, provide the best con-
ditions for developing new products and
processes for the market. a significant
knowledge base exists at university clinics,
research facilities and specialized centers
of competence.
Medical technology in Germany an anchor of economic stability
More than two thirds of the eUr 20 billion
in german suppliers’ total sales are made
abroad. “Medtech, Made-in-germany” is a
successful brand family. In germany, during the years of economic crisis in 2008
and 2009, the sector remained resistant

to the trend and was an “anchor of stability.” advances in medical technology make
more and more sophisticated diagnostics
possible, making increasingly individualized treatments for disease a prospect as
well. as a whole, there is also an increased
tendency towards measures aimed at preventing disease.average life expectancy is
rising world-wide, meaning that illness is
changing and multiple ailments are becoming a rule. Quality of life for the elderly can,
however, be improved significantly thanks
to the opportunities opened by modern and
non-invasive treatment methods.
Advantage: High Tech,
Low life cycle cost
High quality, german medical technology
comes at a price. nevertheless, the costs
must be allocated throughout the life of a
product. High quality and comprehensive
“after sales service” guarantee low “life
cycle cost,” because the device works reliably and efficiently and can be used over a
long time period.
advances in medical technology open
many new opportunities for diagnoses,
treatments and therapies, and as a result
have a positive effect on the quality of life of
every individual. the introduction and use
of modern medical technology do, however, involve initial costs for hospitals and
doctors’ practices in terms of investment
and application. these are then passed on
to health insurance providers. For this reason, obtaining and applying modern medical technology is frequently considered to
be “too expensive.”
During the cost debate, savings resulting
from preventing or healing disease due to
new procedures are not considered. Factors, for example, such as more rapid recovery times, greater physical integrity,
a speedy return to work, or a general increase in longevity are difficult to quantify.
the savings are also frequently realized
outside of the health care system, meaning that genuine debate about cost rarely
takes place, or when it does, it merely addresses costs in a rudimentary way. yet in
addition to factors that are difficult to quantify, there are also measurable dimensions
that indicate the application of innovative
medical technology made by german firms
can result in considerable, comprehensive
cost reduction. that is because the use of

the most modern of technology frequently
improves existing diagnosis, treatment or
therapy opportunities clearly. the results
are shorter surgery times and recovery periods as well as the reduction in personnel
costs and materials.
Know-how and innovative
technologies for sustainable services
german medical technology offers more
than individual solutions. It can also effectively address complex challenges. Stateof-the-art and well-equipped health care
facilities mean there is a growing need
for continuous application and technology
training amongst physicians and health
care staff. germany’s medical technology
industry makes quite substantial invest-
ments: In order to introduce and sustainably use innovative technologies for
diagnosis and treatment, it is imperative
for the german healthcare industry to offer comprehensive training and education along with the technology we provide.
Skill-development and training provided
by german med-tech companies not only
includes product and technical training
but also focuses on applications as well as
comprehensive diagnostic and treatment
processes. a number of german med-tech
companies also support the exchange of
local clinicians with german universities.
In addition to providing clinical know-how
and insight, training using state-of-the-art
medical technology provides the foundation for clinicians to learn how to use such
technology effectively back in their home

country. With a good mix of large companies and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMes), germany is in a position

equipment suitable to patient needs while

german companies have the additional
strength of increased awareness of the
link between the issue of sustainability and
health care. Facilities known as “green
Hospitals” with energy-efficient planning
and the application of energy-efficient
technologies will become increasingly important in the future, and are coming under
increasing demand.
Upgrade capability and IT based
quality assurance
Key branches of german medical technology are found in the fields of electrosurgery, anesthesiology, patient monitoring
and a range of diagnostic procedures.
Megatrends such as miniaturization, molecularization and digitization nevertheless have an even more concise role to
play in other product areas – above all in
radiology. In terms of large devices beyond
radiation therapy, the emphases are on
medical imaging systems, which lay the
foundation for a range of lines of medical
inquiry, including histological imaging (realistic cross-sectional images), functional
imaging (analyses of processes in affected
areas of the body), interventional imaging
(for surgical support), multi-modal imaging (mutually-enhancing applications) or
molecular imaging (for preventive purposes and early diagnosis).
originally distinct technologies, such as
computer tomography and positron emission (Pet), are based on different physical
principles but have been merged into hybrid forms (Pet-ct). this is also true for
magnetic resonance imaging (MrI), which
in contrast to procedures using x-rays,
does not require the emission of radiation
(Pet-Mrt). as a result, far more information can be obtained and processed during
the course of an examination. Ultrasound
diagnostics differ from procedures involving large devices in that they produce dy-
namic results. examinations can now even
be done in “real time” (3D images “live” on
the monitor = 4D)
In addition to the rising proportion of software that is used for system control, upgrade capability is also a key characteristic
of modern systems and plays a role especially with respect to product life cycle. Under the auspices of their technical services,
manufacturers offer long-term support in
training users, advice about acquisitions,
providing replacement parts, maintenance
and holistic service concepts.
Intercommunication
of Health Care Devices
Quality assurance measures play a preeminent role for german suppliers that develop, operate and provide lasting assurance
of device performance. top-flight health
care is inconceivable without links to innovative medical technology and modern
It systems. the aim is to gradually link
existing It systems with each other and
with medical devices in order to allow integrated sequencing of intermediate and
long term workflows.
Furthermore, this linkage would make
possible the exchange of medical information and development of electronic patient files. ZVeI and the organization that
represents it on a european level, cocIr,
are among the proponents of the initiative “Integrating the Healthcare enterprise
(IHe).” Its aim is to use existing standards
to establish intercommunication between
devices supplied to the health care market
regardless of manufacturer. Users and industry are equal partners in this targeted
development.
Invaluable Experience
on International markets
two decades ago, the german Healthcare export group (gHe) was established
to address the issue of export, a topic key
to medical technology. the impetus for its
creation came from within the industry
itself. the gHe first specialized primarily in the Mideast. later, these services
broadened to further markets. today, the
gHe is a strong trade association primarily oriented towards practical application.
In terms of coverage, member activities
segue across the entire palette of medical
technology. Members are established on
all international markets.
after all, the gHe’s member companies
today account for some 80 percent of germany’s total medical technology exports.
the exchange of information between
members takes place in the quickest way
possible. colleagues use the gHe-Forum
to rapidly exchange information about different localities. the issues discussed are
diverse. they can range from the level of
demand with respect to the reliability of a
specific merchant to requests for proposals and beyond to exchange of information
about the current political situation in a
country. gHe members meet three times
annually. Member participation rates of
over 80 percent underscore how valuable
direct exchange among colleagues is. each
meeting has special countries of emphasis
and external consultants are invited to take
part and present their knowledge.
a successful team made up of the most
varied of german medical technology
companies has grown up in the two decades during which gHe has existed. the
huge range of experience of this team is
invaluable. every individual contributes to
this quality with their own knowledge. all
gHe members profit from this pool of experience and as a result can avoid making
costly investment errors while doing international business. the gHe has become an
export expert in the area of medical technology and that expertise has contributed
its share to the success of the organization’s member firms. 

disease burden of developed countries

Brainlab has developed a navigation system for the human body. With this technology, target volumes of brain tumors,
for example, can be localized with great
accuracy to either attack the tumor with
high-precision radiation or to remove it
with minimally invasive surgery. In addition, the navigation system already supports precise placement of screws in the
spine and now provides total hip and knee
replacement navigation.
Common treatment options for brain tumors or arteriovenous malformations are
open craniotomy with or without comple-
mentary radiotherapy. However, functional
disorders are often located in areas of the
brain that are difficult for the neurosurgeon to access. In cases where common
treatment options cannot be employed or
can only be employed with considerable
risk for the patient, Brainlab systems for
minimally invasive neurosurgery and radiosurgery offer new possibilities.
For some indications, radiosurgery represents an alternative treatment method for
brain tumor patients who cannot undergo
conventional neurosurgery for clinical reasons. This treatment is non-invasive and
does not require anesthesia.
The patient is usually able to return home
the same day. Since radiosurgery can be
applied on an outpatient basis, costs are
reduced considerably, and a patient’s quality of life is improved. Even tumors in other
parts of the body can now be successfully
treated with the high-precision radiosurgery system Novalis® Radiosurgery.

health as an important part of the general health. The VDDI headquartered in
Cologne represents more than 200 member companies.
According to the latest numbers of 2010, the 200 member
companies had almost 18,000 employees and recorded a total
turnover of 4.013 billion euros, i.e. an increase of + 6.9 percent.
The companies spend up to 8 percent of their sales revenues to
finance research and development tasks. In close contact and
collaboration with the academic dentistry at universities, with
craftsmen at dental labs, and with the developers of material
science, the dental industry is researching for new diagnosis
and therapy indications and is developing innovative technologies, new methods and materials for the user. 
Ideas and visions can become reality with
creative and experienced planners and
consulting engineers. The leading representatives are brought together in VBI - the German Association of
Consulting Engineers. Some 3 000 member companies are linked
by this powerful professional organisation: to ensure representation for their professional and economic interests, and to allow an
exchange of views and to organise further training. On the world
