This restored former workshop consists of: a
room devoted to the regional geology and
an area illustrating, the economic, historic
and social aspects of the working of coticule
(a honestone) in the region.

In dieser alten restaurierten Werkstatt wird in
einem Raum die regionale Geologie erläutert. In
einem
anderen
Raum
werden
die
wirtschaftlichen, historischen und sozialen Aspekte
der Herstellung von Wetzsteinen in der Region
veranschaulicht.
Coticule: a hone stone
Coticule: der Wetzstein
Vielsalm is situated at an average altitude of
420 metres. The various rocks that are
found underground are of various origins, and were created and transformed over millions of years by
water, wind, temperature and pressure, a process known as metamorphosis. In the Salm valley region,
the most common rocks are schist
and arkose. It is in the schist that we
find veins of coticule, a hone stone.
This yellowish stone contains garnet,
which is why it is possible to use coticule
to sharpen blades and give them a very
fine edge.
Vielsalm liegt auf einer durchschnittlichen Höhe
von 420 m. Die unterschiedlichen Gesteine,
des Vielsalmer Untergrunds sind unterschiedlichen Ursprungs. Im Laufe der Zeit wurden
sie durch Wasser, Wind, Temperatur und
Druck,
kurz
durch
den
„Metamorphismus“, geschaffen und
verändert. Im Land der Salm kommt
vorwiegend Schiefer und Arkose vor. In
den Schieferlagen liegen die Adern des
Coticule-Steins, aus dem Wetzsteine
gefertigt werden. Dieser gelbfarbige Stein
enthält Granat dank dessen Messer sehr
scharf geschliffen werden können.
Wie wird ein Messer geschliffen?
Zunächst muss der Stein (weiße Seite) angefeuchtet
werden. Anschließend wird der Stein auf einer ebenen
Fläche gelegt und die Schneide wird darauf in einem
Winkel von +/- 20° auf dem Stein gerieben. Die Flächen
werden abwechselnd auf dem Stein geschliffen. Diese
Steine sind im Fremdenverkehrsbüro von Vielsalm und
im Coticule-Museum von Salmchâteau erhältlich.
How to sharpen your knife?
First, wet the stone (white side). Then the stone is held
on a flat surface and the blade is rubbed (at an angle
of about 20° obliquely on the stone. The sides of the
blade are sharpened alternately. These stones are sold
at the Vielsalm Tourist Office and at the Coticule
Museum of Salmchâteau.

Denkmalgeschütztes Schloss, dass von
Henri-François
Baptiste,
Magistratsbeamter am Hofe von Salm
und Bürgermeister von Gouvy 1741
erbaut wurde. Das Baujahr ist am Türsturz
zu sehen. Die mit Schnitzereien verzierte
Eichentäfelung
der
Treppe
ist
bemerkenswert.

This listed building was built by HenriFrançois Baptiste, councillor at the court
of Salm and mayor of Gouvy.
The
construction date 1741 appears on the
lintel of the front door. The carved oak
woodwork of the staircase, the coats of
arms and the doors are outstanding.

Dieses Eislager wurde in der 2. Hälfte des XIX.
Jahrhundert erbaut und diente dazu, das
Schloss von Hermanmont mit Eis aus den
umliegenden Teichen zu beliefern. Eine
Zentraleinheit und eine Zugangsschleuse aus
Schiefer bilden den Kern des Gebäudes. Durch
einen Hohlraum zwischen der Zentraleinheit
und der Außenmauer wird eine bessere
Wärmedämmung gewährleistet. Ein kleiner
Turm mit Wendeltreppe und ein Leuchtturm
vervollständigen das mit Schiefer bedachte
Gebäude. Zur Buchung von Führungen

This was built in the second half of the 19th
century, and was intended to supply
Hermanmont chateau with ice. The ice was
brought from neighbouring lakes. A central
block and an entrance airlock made of local
schist form the core of the building. In the
central block, the inner chamber is separated
from the outer wall by a void which provides
better thermal insulation. A turret with a spiral
staircase and a lantern tower were added to
the construction. The whole building is topped
with a slate roof. Guided tours by reservation
with Mr. Charles Legros.

Der imposante viereckige und 26 m hohe Turm
wurde um 1100 errichtet. Das Kirchenschiff
wurde jedoch 1712 gebaut. Das Wappen mit
dem Lachs aus der Salm über dem Eingang
wurde Ende des XVII. Jahrhunderts von den
französischen Revolutionären fast unerkennbar
gemacht. Die Außengalerie wird von drei mit
Grimassen schneidenden Figuren verzierten
Balken getragen und diente zur Schau der
Reliquien der Kreuzzüge an die Pilger. Das
barocke Mobiliar ist das Werk des Künstlers
Jean-Georges Scholtus aus Bastogne. Figuren
der vier Evangelisten schmücken die Kanzlei
und der Kanzeldeckel zeigt Sankt Michel, der
den Teufel erschlägt. 1954 wurde die
Kirche teilweise durch ein Brand zerstört.
1955 wurde der Architekt Maurice Robert
aus Gouvy mit der Restaurierung
beauftragt. Unter der Leitung des
Künstlers Louis-Marie aus Namur entstand
eine bemerkenswerte Polychromie. Auf
dem Friedhof, der die Kirche umgibt,
stehen Grabmäler aus dem
17.
Jahrhundert.

The imposing, square 26 metre-tall tower was
built around the year 1100, while the nave
was rebuilt in 1712.
The coats of arms
representing the salmon of Salm above the
doorway were hammered and made almost
indecipherable by the French revolutionaries
at the and of the 18th century. The external
gallery is supported by three beams adorned
with grimacing faces. From the top of this
gallery, relics brought back from the Crusades
were presented to pilgrims.
Inside, the
Baroque oak furniture is the work of the
sculptor Jean-Georges Scholtus of Bastogne.
The pulpit is adorned with the figures of the
four evangelists and its canopy is topped
by a statuette of Saint Michael striking
down a demon. The church was partly
destroyed by fire in 1954.
In 1955,
architect Maurice Robert of Gouvy was
commissioned to restore it, and is was all
painted with a fine polychromy under
the direction of the artist Louis-Marie
Londot of Namur. Some of the graves in
the cemetery surrounding the church
date back to 1638.

ihrer
Suche
nach
Heidelbeeren, die für so manche
Einheimische
eine
gute
Einnahmequelle ist, begaben sich
einige junge Leute zu dem
Waldgebiet mit Namen „Bonalfâ“.
In diesem Jahr war der Winter sehr
hart und es hatte lange bis in den
Frühling gefroren. Heidelbeeren
waren daher schwer zu finden.
Nach stundenlangem Suchen
gaben sie schließlich auf und

ihrerseits in Hexen verwandelt und
nehmen seit diesem Tag an teil

"One day, some young people
looking for blueberries, wild fruit
which were a staple for a large
number of local residents, went to
the place known as "Bonalfâ". The
very harsh winter that year had
prolonged the freezing weather well
into the spring, and it was very
difficult to find blueberries.
After
searching in vain for hours, they
decided to give up and go home.
They were amazed as they made
their way down from Bonalfâ to
meet Gustine Maca, an old lady that
people said could cast spells, with a
basket full of blueberries on her arm.
The young people were so
dumbfounded by this sight that they
could not take their eyes off the
basket. This was an unusual meeting,
seeing these sought-after fruit filling
the old lady's basket. Seeing them
struck dumb, they old lady smiled
and invited them to drink a glass of
pékêt while tasting some "tchatcha",
crushed blueberries.
The young
people had no hesitation accepting,
but unfortunately, as the blueberries
were bewitched, they were turned
into Macralles, and since then, they
have been taking part in the Witches' Sabbath.”

Katzensprung vom Stadtzentrum und
Bahnhof von Vielsalm in einem völlig
platten Gebiet und ist begehbar mit
Kinderwagen oder Rollstuhl. Auf dem See
befindet sich ein sehr schöner Pavillon, wo
im
Sommer
Musikveranstaltungen
stattfinden. Es gibt dort ebenfalls
Tretboote, eine Spielwiese und eine

A stone's throw from the centre of Vielsalm

completely flat and perfectly feasible with
a pram or wheelchair. A very fine pavilion
is built on the lake, where musical
entertainment is provided in summer. It is

Die Vereinigung der Geschäftsleute von Salmchâteau
wollte das Erbgut des Dorfes ins Rampenlicht rücken und
konzentrierte sich dabei insbesondere auf den
historischen Aufenthalt von Victor Hugo im Jahre 1862.
Der berühmte französische Dichter hat in der Tat einen
der schönsten Orte vom Salmchâteau verewigt, nämlich
die alte Brücke Madeleine mit den Ruinen
des Schlosses der Grafen von Salm im
Hintergrund. Der Rundgang beginnt an der
Brücke Madeleine. Er ist 7 km lang und
umfasst etwa zehn Schilder in Französisch
und Niederländisch mit Zitaten von Victor
Hugo. Den Plan des Rundgangs finden Sie
im La Maison du Tourisme und in den
Geschäften von Salmchâteau. Der
Rundgang ist nicht mit Kinderwagen
geeignet.
The retailers' association of Salmchâteau
wanted to draw attention to the village's
heritage, and particularly the historic visit
by Victor Hugo in 1862. Indeed, at the
time, the famous French novelist and poet
had immortalised one of the most beautiful
places in Salmchâteau: the old Madeleine
bridge with the ruins of the château of the
Counts of Salm in the background. The
walk forms a loop of 7 km starting from the
Madeleine bridge. It is interspersed with
ten panels in FR/NL quoting Victor Hugo.

Dieser Pfad wurde in Zusammenarbeit
zwischen dem ÖSHZ Brügge und der Abteilung
Natur und Forsten von Vielsalm geschaffen
und beginnt in der Rue des Fusillés in Ennal. Er
ist 3 km lang und umfasst steile Strecken. Er
führt Sie zu einem Waldrand, wo sich Ihnen ein
herrlicher
Panoramablick
über
die
Landschaften der Hochardennen auftut. Auf
dem Weg durch den duftenden Laubwald
können Sie anhand von 20 Lehrtafeln (in Französisch und
Niederländisch) mehr über die unterschiedlichen
Baumarten, deren Bewirtschaftung und Neuanpflanzung
erfahren. Dieser Pfad umfasst ebenfalls einen Unterstand
und ist mit einem grünen Kreuz gekennzeichnet.
Devised by the CPAS of Bruges, in close
cooperation with the Nature and
Forests Division of Vielsalm. Starting
point: at the top of the rue des Fusillés
in Ennal. This 3 km-long, rather steep
route will take you to a ridge where
you will have a fine panorama over the
hilly landscapes of the High Ardennes.
As you walk through the forest of
varied softwood and leafy species, you can find out
about the different trees, how they are logged,
regeneration, etc. by reading 20 educational panels (in
French and Dutch). A shelter is at your disposal. The trail is
signposted with a green cross.

Dieser Pfad befindet sich auf rund 300 m von
Baclain in Richtung Montleban, an einem Ort mit
dem
Namen „Gros Bois“. Er
wurde in
Zusammenarbeit zwischen der Gemeinde Gouvy
und dem Naturpark der 2 Ourthe und mit der
Unterstützung des Fremdenverkehrsamtes von
Gouvy geschaffen. Es ist ein 800 m lange Schleife,
die mit Werken des Künstlers Joost Vanvoorden
gekennzeichnet ist, Lehrtafeln (in Französisch und
Niederländisch), Tische zum Picknicken sowie einen
Parkplatz umfasst. Der Pfad ist nicht mit
Kinderwagen begehbar und Hunde sind der Leine zu
führen.

discover outstanding trees in the villages
of Bovigny and Courtil. Persons with

follow the trail, which can be walked in
several stages. The educational panels

trees on the route, such as: variety,
usefulness, symbolism and history ... all
illustrated by photos. This project is the
result of excellent collaboration between the young
people of the two villages, the local authority in Gouvy,
the 2 Ourthes Natural Park and the Tourist Office in
Gouvy.

Die Waldlichtung "So Bêchefa" liegt entlang
der Straβe Neuville-Commanster. Sie ist
umgeben von einem Plenterwald, in dem
Sie Angaben über die Baumarten finden. In
der Mitte der Lichtung sind drei große
überdachte Grillplätze (für +/- 20 Personen)
eingerichtet. Bei Sonnenaufgang werden
dort das ganze Jahr über Tische ausgestellt.
Buchungen sind nicht erforderlich. Holz wird
nicht bereitgestellt.
The "So Bêchefa" clearing is located along
the Neuville-Commanster road. It is
surrounded by a managed forest where
you will find the name of the species
growing there. In the centre of the clearing,
three large covered barbecues (each
catering for about 20 people) and picnic
tables are at your disposal all year round
from sunrise to sunset. No reservation or
firewood on the spot.

Witches’ Sabbath

The evening starts in the local park in
Vielsalm. Everything starts with a concert of
hunting horns. Then the Macralles (the
witches) arrive, and steal the keys of the
town from the Mayor. Next, everyone goes
the place known as "Tiennemesse" where
the "Sabbath" takes place. The Macralles,
in the form of a son et lumière show,
perform funny anecdotes about what
happened to certain of the people of
Vielsalm during the last year, all in the Walloon dialect.
Finally, the Grand Council of the Macralles inducts VIPs
from the region and the Belgian audiovisual scene.

erscheinen die Hexen und entwenden dem
Bürgermeister die Stadtschlüssel. Danach
begeben sich alle zu dem Ort mit Namen
„Tiennemesse“, wo der so genannte
„Sabbat“ stattfindet. Die Hexen zeigen in
einem Licht- und Tonspiel in Wallonisch
lustige Anekdoten, die einheimische
Einwohner während des Jahres erlebt haben. Schließlich
inthronisieren die Hexen bedeutende Persönlichkeiten der
Region und der belgischen
Medienlandschaft.

The origins of this festival date back to the 1960s
when a group of local people decided to honour
this seasonal fruit. Since then, the people of
Vielsalm have kept the tradition alive. In the
morning, a market of traditional produce (sampling
of blueberry tart and other regional produce) is set
up in the town centre. In the
afternoon, the Macralles and
various folklore groups make
their way through the streets,
culminating in a parade in
the local park.
In the
evening, concerts and
fireworks are also on the
programme. 21 July is the
Belgian national holiday.

Der Ursprung dieses Fest geht
auf die 60er Jahre zurück, als

Gruppe

Einheimischen

verleihen wollte. Seitdem
führen die Bewohner von Vielsalm die Tradition fort.
Morgens findet in der Stadt ein traditioneller Markt
statt (Kostprobe des Heidelbeerkuchens und
anderer regionaler Produkte). Nachmittags ziehen
die
Hexen
und
verschiedene
andere
Folkloregruppen in einem Straßenzug durch die
Strassen. Dieser Zug endet im Stadtpark. Abends
finden Konzerte und ein Feuerwerk statt. Der 21. Juli
ist der belgische Nationalfeiertag.

Es ist eines der ältesten Jazzfestivals in
Belgien und auch das einzige mit einem
derart reichen Gästebuch. Viele der großen
Jazzmusiker haben diesem Festival einen

Freitags und samstags steht der Jazz im Vordergrund,
