HEAD COACH LORI FISH
Now in her third season with the
Minnesota State women’s basketball
program, Lori Fish, the seventh head
coach in MSU women’s basketball
history, is 23-32 (.418) in her career
as a head coach. In North Central
Conference games, Fish holds an 8-16
(.333) record.
In her two years with the Mavericks, Fish has coached two All-NCC
selections, two All-NCC Honorable
Mention honorees, one Academic
All-NCC recipient and an ESPN The
Magazine Academic All-District V
First-Team selection. She also tutored
three-time NCC Player of the Week
Arin Andrews, who finished her career
ranked seventh on the MSU all-time
rebounding (784) and ninth on the alltime points scored list (1,200).
Before coming to MSU, Fish served
as an assistant coach with the woman’s basketball program at St. Cloud State
University, beginning in 1999. The Huskies went 78-61 (.561) during her tenure, including a 21-9 record and a first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in
2000-01. During her time at St. Cloud State, Fish coached 12 All-NCC award
winners in addition to two NCC First-Year Player of the Year selections and
a NCC Defensive Player of the Year. She also coached 18 Academic All-NCC
award winners and one CoSIDA Academic All-America honoree.
Prior to her stint at St. Cloud State, Fish served as an assistant coach with
the South Dakota State University
women’s basketball program from
1996 to1999, during which the Jackrabbits posted a 57-25 (.695) record and
earned a NCAA regional appearance
in 1998-99. In 1995-96, Fish spent a
season as an assistant coach on the
women’s basketball staff at Eastern
Illinois University, a NCAA Division
I program.
A 1991 graduate of SDSU, Fish
served as a graduate assistant for the
Jackrabbits for two seasons (199394 and 1994-95), during which they
posted a 46-14 record and made NCAA
postseason appearances both years.
She earned her master’s degree from
SDSU in 1995.
A two-time All-NCC performer at
SDSU, Fish served as a team captain
during her senior season. She completed her career ranking 20th on the
school’s all-time scoring list with 1,133
points and her 662 career rebounds
ranks 10th. SDSU made a NCAA postseason tournament appearance in 1988
during her sophomore campaign, and
the program built an 80-34 (.701) mark
during her four-year career.

SEASON OUTLOOK
Senior guard AlannaWahlreturns after leading
the 2005-06 Mavericks with 99 assists.
When comparing the 2006-07 Minnesota
State University women’s basketball team to
the 2005-06 Mavericks, one area easily stands
out: height.
Not that the team got a little taller over the
summer — the returners come in at exactly the
same heights as they were in 2005-06.
However, when the team suits up for its
first contest on Friday, Nov. 17, against the
University of Minnesota, Crookston, the fans
will see seven newcomers on the court — five
of which are 6-0 or taller.
And in addition to those seven newcomers,
seven additional players are listed as sophomores, making the underclassmen total 14 of
19 on the roster.
“We’re going to be a young team, but we
feel we have the potential to make a significant
jump in the win column this season,” third-year
head coach LoriFishsaid. “We have several
players who contributed a year ago, and we feel
we’ve added more speed and athleticism to help
create an up-tempo style of play.”
In 2005-06, the Mavericks posted a 12-16
(.429) overall record and ended 3-9 in the North
Central Conference, finishing in a fifth-place tie
in league standings. The team was led by threetime All-NCC senior center Arin Andrews, who
averaged 13.4 points per game.
MSU returns two of its starters from last
season, including senior guard AlannaWahl
(Lakeville, Minn.) and sophomore guard Flecia
Foster(Pequot Lakes, Minn.). Wahl finished last
season with a team-high 99 assists, also posting
www.msumavericks.com
216 points to rank third on the team. She ended
the season shooting 81-of-204 (.397) from the
field and grabbed 96 rebounds. As a freshman
starter, Foster led the Mavericks with 40 steals
and ranked fourth in points scored with 215,
becoming one of only five Mavericks to net 200
or more points. Her 7.7 points per game finished
29th in NCC rankings, and she recorded doubledigit points in nine of the team’s 28 contests.
“Alanna and Flecia will bring a great deal
of intensity, and we’ll look for them to be our
floor leaders,” Fish said. “Sophomores Alex
Andrews (West Concord, Minn.), Heather
Johnson (Janesville, Minn.) and JoanneNoreen
(Avon, Minn.) made huge strides last season,
and we’ll look for them to be big contributors
on both ends of the floor.”
According to Fish, the experience of the
upperclassmen, including senior JessicaStanek
(Tripoli, Iowa) and juniors DaniGill(Albany,
Minn.), JamieKienitz(Apple Valley, Minn.)
and AnnaVoltmer (Decorah, Iowa), will be
called upon to lead the underclassmen. Stanek,
Foster and Andrews were selected as captions
for 2006-07.
The team’s list of newcomers include
transfers TeresaParker(Pequot Lakes, Minn.)
and MariKorton(Coon Rapids, Minn.) from
Southern Illinois University and Bradley University, respectively. The freshmen class is full
of players who bring in high school state tournament experience, including guards Amanda
Nygaard (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Tiffany
Moe(Brookings, S.D.), forwards LizTrauger
(Livermore, Iowa) and LindseyO’Neill(New
Hampton, Iowa) and center Gretta Layman
(Chippewa Falls, Wis.).
“Teresa and Mari will be needed to anchor
down the center position for us,” Fish said. “They
both bring a lot of athleticism and are not afraid
to get after people defensively.”
The Mavericks also welcome assistant
coach PamGohlto the squad this season. Gohl
joins MSU after a three-year stint as the head
coach at Briar Cliff University, and prior to her
arrival at BCU, she served as an assistant coach
at Fort Hays State University. Gohl began her
coaching career as a graduate assistant at St.
Cloud State University, working with the Huskies from 1999-2001 on a staff that included
Fish as an assistant coach.
“Having coached with (Gohl) before, I
know that she is going to be an excellent addition to our program and will play a large role
in helping us reach our goals,” Fish said.
The Mavericks open their season with their
own MSU Pepsi Tip-Off on Friday and Saturday,
Nov. 17 and 18, in Taylor Center. The team takes
on the University of Minnesota, Crookston on
Nov. 17 at 6 p.m., and on Nov. 18, Bemidji State
faces MSU at 6 p.m.

Q&A
Head Coach Lori Fish
Q: What are your primary expectations for Minnesota State
womenʼs basketball this season?
A: We only return two players
with starting experience, but we
feel comfortable in the fact that
we return a lot of players with
significant playing time from a year
ago. This is going to make practice
very competitive with players
competing for starting roles. We
feel we have a lot of weapons so
teams won’t be able to key in on
one or two players.
Q: How did the team fare in the
off-season?
A: We are very pleased with how
our players prepared themselves
this off-season. They have worked
extremely hard at their strength and
conditioning and becoming better
basketball players.
Q: Can you comment on your
freshmen newcomers and transfers?
A: With their help, we’ll get after
teams defensively and look to score
in transition. They bring much
needed size and athleticism with
a strong desire to be successful.
They’ll give us the depth to get
after teams defensively and play
up-tempo.
Q: How will the Mavericks stand
in the North Central Conference
this season?
A: The conference looks to be
extremely tough again this year.
We have to establish a toughness at
home where it becomes difficult for
people to play here. Even though
we will be a young team, we feel
we can compete with everyone in
our league.

NORTH CENTRAL CONFERENCE INFORMATION
Representatives of colleges and
universities in North Dakota, South
Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, and
Minnesota met in the late fall of 1921
in Chicago to consider the formation of
what was to become the North Central
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference,
now commonly known at the North Central Conference or NCC.
There were representatives from nine institutions at the meeting: North Dakota
Agricultural College (now NDSU), the University of North Dakota, State University
of South Dakota, South Dakota State College, Morningside College, Des Moines
Municipal University, Nebraska Wesleyan, College of St. Thomas and Creighton
University.
Shortly after the conference began, it met with some rough going with four
members withdrawing. Des Moines Municipal went first, dropping out after the
1926 season. Nebraska Wesleyan severed relationships after the season of 1927. In
1928, St. Thomas and Creighton also became casualties. It was not until 1935 that
Omaha University was allowed to join the league. In 1936, Iowa State Teacher’s
College (now Northern Iowa) was admitted, and in 1941, Augustana College of
Sioux Falls was allowed to become a member. Omaha withdrew in 1943, leaving
the NCC membership intact until 1968: Morningside, Northern Iowa, North Dakota
State, North Dakota, Augustana, South Dakota and South Dakota State.
At the fall meeting in 1968, Minnesota State University, Mankato (known
then as Mankato State College) was admitted into the league. The University of
Nebraska-Omaha (formerly Omaha University) was readmitted in the spring of
1976. Minnesota State dropped out in the spring of 1977, and Northern Iowa left in
the spring of 1978. The University of Northern Colorado became the eighth member
of the NCC in January of 1979, and Minnesota State was readmitted along with St.
Cloud State University in 1981 to bring the membership to 10.
Recent years have seen plenty of change in the NCC, with charter member
Morningside departing after the 2001-02 school year after moving to NAIA affiliation
and Northern Colorado leaving the league after 2002-03 to reclassify to NCAA
Division I. In addition, the 2003-04 school year was the last in the league for NCC
mainstays North Dakota State and South Dakota State, both of which followed
UNC’s route to NCAA Division I.
To help fill the void left by the departure of those four schools, Minnesota Duluth
joined the conference during the 2004-05 school year, joining the league after a stint
in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and bringing the current membership
to seven schools. Augustana, Minnesota Duluth, Minnesota State, Nebraska-Omaha,
North Dakota, St. Cloud State and South Dakota will comprise the North Central
Conference for the upcoming school year and the forseeable future.
The league offers championships in 10 sports for men, and nine for women.
The NCC offices are located in Sioux Falls, S.D.

TAYLOR CENTER
Glen Taylor
The result of Minnesota State University,
Mankato alum Glen Taylor’s original $8
million donation was the construction
of Taylor Center, a multipurpose arena
and student center that is the gateway to
Minnesota State.
Taylor Center is the home of the
Mavericks, an inviting and state-ofthe-art admissions center, and Bresnan
Arena, a 4,521-seat coliseum designed
for University gatherings and the best in
intercollegiate athletics.
Designed specifically to highlight
intercollegiate basketball, volleyball
and wrestling, Bresnan Arena features
seating built to give Maverick fans the
best view of the action. MSU athletic
programs benefit from locker rooms,
coaching and staff offices, athletic
training facilities, and a weight room.
A spacious alumni center overlooks
the court, and an upscale design makes
Bresnan Arena one of the most attractive
sports facilities in all of Minnesota and
the upper Midwest.
www.msumavericks.com
Bresnan Arena also serves as a gathering place for the MSU community,
featuring convocations, commencement
and activities that demand a high-capacity location. Just as the Taylor Center is
the crown of Minnesota State, Bresnan
Arena is the crown of the Taylor Center
and the pride of the MSU Department of
Intercollegiate Athletics.
Bresnan Arena and Taylor Center
21
officially opened during Minnesota
State’s Homecoming weekend on Oct.

The Pepsi Tip-Off is a two-day annual
affair that features four women’s teams
and four men’s teams, and will be held
this season on Friday and Saturday, Nov.

2006-07 Maverick Women’s Basketball
On Friday and Saturday, Nov. 17 and 18, the Minnesota State men’s and women’s
basketball teams will host the annual Pepsi Tip-Off in Taylor Center. This season’s Pepsi
Tip-Off represents the seventh year in which the Maverick women’s basketball program
has participated in the event and the fifth year it has done so under the classic format.
The Minnesota State women’s team is slated to face the University of Minnesota,
Crookston on Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. The Golden Eagles finished 6-22 overall last season
and return leading scorer and rebounder Kari Score, who averaged 17.6 points and 9.5
rebounds per game. On Nov. 18 at 6 p.m., MSU entertains Bemidji State University.
BSU, which posted a 13-15 ledger last season, returns center Stephanie Peterson. Peterson
averaged 12 points and 8.5 rebounds per game in 2005-06 to lead the team.
Last season, MSU opened the season with a split in the Pepsi Tip-Off, falling to the
University of Wisconsin-Stout in overtime, 89-86. The Mavericks went on to defeat
Minnesota, Crookston, 81-73, to conclude their Tip-Off action. Just a freshman, Flecia
Foster posted 16 points in each of MSU’s contests, while Arin Andrews put in 25 points
against the Blue Devils and another 10 in the win over UMC.
