and Atlantic Canada. We have been
planning and developing this program
for a long time and we are confident
that with its implementation our drivers,
owner/operators and owner/operator
drivers will earn more money for
performing their jobs safely and reliably.
As outlined in detail in this issue, the
program has been developed with our
goal of operating as a safe, reliable,
and professional organization. Please

Another exciting item is the progress
being made on our new facility
in Dartmouth, NS. The building
construction is on schedule and should
be open in line with the original
estimates of spring 2013. A number of
consultations with drivers and other
staff have occurred to ensure that we are
taking all stakeholders’ viewpoints into
consideration for the development of the
building, maintenance facility and yard.
Overall, business is steady going into the
fall but we are operating in an economy
that is not expanding and remains
highly competitive. We must continue
to monitor all costs and work with our
sales professionals to search for new
opportunities. All drivers and staff are
encouraged to assist in this effort by
bringing forward any ideas that you feel
could help reduce costs or bring in new
business opportunities. Any successful
suggestions will be rewarded.

The winter of 2013 is fast approaching
and like every winter there will be some
days and weeks of challenging weather.
As a result, we must focus on winter
driving awareness for the next several
months. As I write this piece for the
newsletter, various regions in Western
Canada are under severe winter weather
conditions already in early November.

HDL Builds on Reefer Business
The Highway Dedicated Logistics (HDL) team in Moncton, with
the help of the Jim Dibbin (VP Sales), have recently developed
reefer business in Atlantic and Central Canada under the
Seaboard Transport brand. This business is outside of the current
Moncton based JP Baughan reefer operation which supports all
CO-OP Atlantic locations in the Maritimes with reefer service.
With these new customers in both regions, we were able to
launch the Seaboard Transport highway reefer operation.
Keep an eye out for these units, some of the best looking
van reefer units on the road. With the white background, red
Seaboard Transport logos, chrome wheels, and very professional
tractor units pulling you will surely be impressed.

Winter Driving Requires
Winter thinking!
Winter is just around the corner, and it won’t be long before we
are reminded of just how many weather related incidents we see
every winter season. Most of these incidents are minor in nature,
but some are major and result in personal injuries or fatalities,
significant equipment damage, and extensive environmental
remediation efforts.
Fortunately for us most of these incidents have one thing in
common; they are completely preventable. Preventability can be
found in good preparation, coupled with good decision making.
We have all seen the usual winter preparation tips for our
equipment: wiper blades, anti-freeze, tires, spare windshield
washer fluid, properly working heaters, etc. But what about you,
the driver, what preparation do you require to be ready for winter
driving? You are after all the most important piece of the puzzle
when it comes to getting you home to your family safely after
each shift. To that end I’ve identified a brief list of things to think
about as you prepare for winter driving.
• Come to work well rested and eat properly throughout the day.
• Know the weather forecast before you head out each day and
plan your trip accordingly. Be aware of rest area locations well
in advance of actually needing one.
• Keep your line of vision clear by making sure all windows and
mirrors are defrosted and the windshield washer reservoir is
full.
• Remove all snow and ice from headlights, tail-lights, and
running lights as part of your pre-trip inspection and
throughout the day.
• Make good use of your breaks by getting out of the truck and
stretching or grabbing a healthy snack.
• Be aware of changing conditions. Black ice for example starts
to disappear when the sun hits it, so it will stay around longer
in shady areas of the road.
• Understand and recognize the signs of fatigue. Working
longer in darkness and wearing heavy clothing can accelerate
fatigue. Some signs to watch for include: forgetting the last
few miles, yawning, heavy blinking, squinting, head nodding
and the big one: Microsleeps.
• Be a patient, defensive driver. We have twice as many
accidents at night as we do in daylight, and during the winter
months we have 4 to 5 extra hours of darkness each day. It’s
even more important to drive defensively during this period.
Reduce your speed, allow extra space.
• Turn off your cell phone to avoid distractions. Remember,
good drivers just drive!
• No load is worth your life, don’t take unnecessary risks.
I would like to challenge each of you to start your day by looking
into the mirror and asking yourself “what steps can I take to
make sure I get home safely today”. Someone at home will thank
you for it.

Sales & Business
Development Update
There has been significant Sales and Business Development
activity both in the Energy and Highway-Dedicated Divisions
since the last update.
The Chemical Liquid highway business remained steady and
there have been many new accounts added both in Canada and
the US. We were successful in winning a Bio Diesel account for a
year moving product from Ontario to New Jersey, we also showed
increases with our customers that have campaign work, and this
usually requires many trucks in short period of time.
We would like to welcome our new sales staff, Pierre Grenier
– Sales Manger – Northeast, based in Montreal. Pierre brings
years of trucking experience in both the Chemical and Petroleum
industry. Pierre will be focused on developing new customers for
our Chemical division, regionally and cross border. We also have
added a new inside sales representative, Melissa Nadon, based
in Toronto. Melissa’s primary focus is securing new sales and
backhauls for our cross border division.

Tree Program
The employees at the

tags from their Christmas
tree to support the Salvation
Army’s Angel Tree Campaign.
Each tag has the gender and
age of a child; employees
choose a tag and purchase a
gift for the child. At the end of
November the Salvation Army
picks up the presents to be
distributed to the children of
the campaign.

Business throughout the Moncton Operations remains robust,
and we continue to work on business development opportunities
which help grow and diversify our operations in Moncton. We
have hired a new Business Development Manager, Trevor Mann,
to help us develop our Highway Van, Temperature Control and
Flat deck division. Trevor will be working with our Moncton
Management to assist in growing the division. Late this summer
we secured a long-term contract to move frozen product from
Lunenburg to Central Canada for Highliner. This is an exciting
new contract that has helped us expand our long haul van and
temperature control division. We are looking forward to adding
additional trucks and operators in this division as we develop
new accounts.
The Energy business has seen new business and contract
renewals. We renewed and picked up significant business with
Suncor in Ontario and the Maritimes in retail. We also renewed
our Naphtha and Lube Feed contracts with Suncor in Ontario. We
have added new accounts in the retail gas and ethanol business
in Eastern Canada as well.

In Memory of
Sonny Swinamer
On August 18, 2012 we lost one of
the pioneers of our company Sonny
Swinamer. Sonny began with Seaboard in
an operations management role and then
moved on to become an owner operator.
He will always be remembered for his
positive attitude, helpfulness and for the
obvious pride and love of his family.

The second of the three phase module for the Train the Trainer
course was held at our Arrow Road Office in October 2012.
Shown here are the participants in their “red fleece jerseys”.
The 3rd and final module for this current course is scheduled for
early spring – it’s graduation day! I’m looking forward to it and I
trust that the participants are as well.
These modules continue to be successful due to the sponsorship
and endorsement from our company and the participation
and engagement of our professional drivers and operational
personnel.
For those drivers and other operations personnel who would
like to participate in this course stay tuned for communication
upcoming in the New Year for the dates for the next course.
Drivers will need endorsement from their drivers for attendance.
The course content involves professional development with
respect to training and leadership as well as overviews from
corporate personnel relating to communication, listening skills,
instructional tips as well as changes and challenges in the
industry.
To all, please enjoy your Christmas activities, do not drink and
drive, and where possible - prevent others from doing so.
There are interactive modules and even HOMEWORK
assignments which gives the participants an opportunity to
address the class. It’s a time for learning, sharing, reviewing
trends in the business, but also allows time for social interaction
and fellowship.

Scholarship Program
In November 2011 we had the pleasure of introducing the
Seaboard Transport Group Scholarship Program. This program
offers a scholarship to the children of our office staff, maintenance
staff, driving staff as well as owner/operators and their drivers
towards post-secondary education.
Scholarships for the 2012/2013 Academic Year were awarded
to 26 well-deserving students representing multiple operating
divisions across the company who met the program requirements.
The 2012-2013 Academic Year Recipients were:
Receiving the Seaboard Transportation Group Scholarship was
particularly fantastic because it allowed me the opportunity to
greatly decrease my commitment at work this semester and place a
greater focus on my community volunteer projects and my studies.
It is a great relief that I am able to put a larger emphasis on school
since this is my final semester before graduation and it is very
important to me that I maintain my GPA in these final months.

In late August, I received the Seaboard Transport Group of
Companies Educational Scholarship for the 2012-2013 academic
year. I have worked hard during my post-secondary education and
receiving this scholarship reassured me that my dedication and
hard work is not going unnoticed. This year I am continuing my
education with a Bachelor of Social Work at St. Thomas University
with the hope of pursuing a career dedicated to helping and caring
for neglected populations and individuals in Canada. The scholarship
is helping me invest in my future; moreover, young adults, such as
myself, are unable to pursue their dreams and passions without the
generous support of scholarship donors. Lastly, I want to emphasize

Yes this scholarship has greatly helped me with my academic
year so far and I am extremely thankful to be a recipient. It has taken
some of the stress about the school year away especially being in
first year nursing studies. This scholarship money has already paid
a huge portion of the cost of my very expensive and numerous text

Dear Seaboard Transport Group of Companies Educational
Scholarship,
I have dreamed of attending the RPN program ever since I was
young and now that I have been named as one of the recipients in
the Seaboard Transport Group of Companies Education Scholarship
Program, my dream is becoming a reality. I am glad to have the
opportunity to thank you personally for your generosity. Without
scholarship patrons like you, there would be many students such as
myself unable to pursue the career they’ve dreamed of.
My future plans include pursuing a full-time RPN position in a local
hospital. I not only have a passion for medicine, but also enjoy
working with people. Once again, I offer my sincerest thanks for your
continued generosity to the Seaboard Transport Group of Companies
Educational Scholarship.

My name is Emilia Mahdiyan from London Ontario; I am in my
first year of studies at university in Toronto. Going into my program
I had no idea my expenses would add up to such a huge amount.
University today is extremely expensive- it is one big business.
The scholarship I have received from Seaboard has helped me
tremendously by helping me buy my required books and all my
required class supplies. I would like to thank them for acknowledging
my part in the community and rewarding me for doing so.

Driver Performance Scorecard
Volunteering in The Community
The Driver Performance Scorecard Program came into effect on
November 1st, 2012. This initiative will reward our drivers that
maintain a defined scoring rank from information received by our
On Board Computer (OBC) as well as adherence to regulatory and
corporate policies relating to safety and service.
In September the 3036 Sackville Lions (EME) Royal Canadian
Army Cadet Corps conducted their annual Lions Club clean-up in
Lower Sackville. Kyla Chamberlaine our Junior HR Coordinator in
Dartmouth was there with them picking up garbage and teaching
the cadets about community service. Kyla volunteers on a weekly
basis with the cadet unit.
It has been identified that through education, monitoring, and
correction of driver’s behavior relative to vehicle speed and
industry regulations; we achieve the following;

• Prevent injuries, protect our professional drivers, and protect
the general public.
• Be recognized as a Safe, Reliable, & Professional transport
company.
• Adherence to the National Safety Code relating to carrier and
driver compliance.
• Enhance fuel conservation & lower maintenance cost.
• Raise Awareness and promote Safe Driving Behavior.
• Recognize and reward drivers regarding their individual
performance and to identify and correct unsatisfactory
performance.
Prior to and since the start-up of this program we have identified
major improvements with respect to vehicle operation and
compliance. We currently have approximately 70% of our total
driving team reaching a scoring level of 90% or higher and
approximately 80% our drivers participating and eligible for the
monthly incentive on some level. This information proves that it
is achievable by all drivers regardless of commodity, orbit, and
circumstance.
Brochures explaining the program are available through
operations staff, and educational support can be received from
your manager or an HSE representative.
I could wish you all good luck, but that’s the wrong terminology.
It’s not luck; it is making the right choices, operating safely and in
compliance with company policies and procedures.
I do however, wish you and your family all the best for the holiday
season and urge you to continue to drive defensively.
Please do not drink and drive and where possible; prevent others
from doing so as well.

Female hockey continues to grow in Atlantic Canada. With the
Nova Scotia Female Midget AAA Hockey League, females have
the opportunity to experience hockey at a very competitive
level. This opportunity for competitive hockey did not exist for
female hockey players before 2007 in Nova Scotia. The League is
compiled of four teams in different regions of Nova Scotia: the Pro
Cresting Penguins, the Metro Boston Pizza, the Northern Storm
and the Cape Breton Screaming Glass Eagles.
Kaitlyn Parker is one of the Assistant Coaches as well as trainers
for the Pro Cresting Penguins. Claire Warren, second year
goaltender for the team commented “Kaitlyn, or KP as we know
her, has volunteered countless hours of her free time towards
making us not only better hockey players, but better individuals.
Despite the fact Kaitlyn works full-time with a successful career
ahead of her, she continues to be there at every practice and
game”. The Pro Cresting Penguins players and coaching staff
commit to one hour of off-ice training every Tuesday night, as
well a one hour and a half practice Tuesday and Thursday nights.
The coaches and players also commit to games or tournaments
every weekend of the year from September to March.
Before practices and games the sport of hockey involves much
more then showing up and lacing your skates. It includes mental
preparation, off-ice conditioning, pre-game meals and many other
aspects. Warren commented “I cannot even begin to imagine the
amount of severe injuries our team could possess from playing if
Kaitlyn had not of provided her medical aid and expertise to our
team. I feel personally prepared for a future in hockey. She has
taught me and many more of my teammates the importance of
commitment and dedication and for that I am extremely grateful”.
The Pro Cresting Penguins home games are every Sunday at
11am at the East Hants Sportsplex in Lantz, Nova Scotia.

Corporate RRSP Program
In 2013, we will begin hosting various RRSP Information Sessions
across the country that will be open to all drivers, office staff and
maintenance staff. Our goal is to provide our employees with
helpful information on retirement planning and personal financial
management. Stay tuned for the dates and locations.

Peoplenet Update
Driver Scorecard Results:
The Driver Scorecard is designed to help promote and raise
awareness for “Safe Driving Behaviour” and “Compliance to the
rules and regulations that we work within”. The first half of the
current fiscal year, is reporting positive results:
• 69% of Driving Fleet now reporting 90% or higher, Weekly
Driver Score
• 11% improvement in the percentage of Drivers achieving
Corporate target of 90%
• 75 Drivers reporting a 100% average score over the past 6
months
• 25% Reduction in Posted Speed Frequency since April, 2012

Significant progress has been made on the new Seaboard
Corporate Office building since the last issue of The Headliner.
The exterior is nearing completion with paving and landscaping
next to be completed. The interior finishes will start in the newyear with the anticipated project completion scheduled for early
spring.
We have assembled an internal design team comprised of
members of various departments/divisions to obtain input for the
design of the building. The new building will offer our drivers,
mechanics and office staff a modern workplace with state of the
art equipment to enhance your work experience.

One of the key factors we measure in driver performance score is
speed. There are two measures that we evaluate:
1. Posted Speed Adherence - Frequency of Speed Observations
greater than 5 Km over Posted
2. Over Speed % - Percentage of time, operating at speeds
greater than 104.5 Km/h
Over the past few years we have introduced several programs,
with the intent of improving our speed behavior on the roads and
the results are very impressive.
• 42% reduction in Over Speed % since 2009
• 60% reduction in Posted Speed Observation frequency, since
January, 2010

your commitment and efforts to these programs.
Employment Equity Update –
Question and Answer Session:
Does employment equity lead
to hiring unqualified people?
No, the purpose of employment equity is to hire qualified
candidates. Employment equity respects the merit and
encourages the selection, hiring, training, promotion and
retention of qualified individuals.
What does the Employment Equity
Act mean for an employer?
Employers are legally obligated to abide by the Employment
Equity Act. They must:
1. Determine if all four designated groups are fully represented
at every level of their organization’s workforce;
2. Identify employment barriers for any of the four designated
groups; and
3. Work with employees to develop a plan that promotes full
representation of all four designated groups.
Peoplenet offers many opportunities for improvement in our
day-to-day operations, and we will continue to utilize Peoplenet
and other technologies to help us provide our customers “Safe,
Reliable and Professional Service”. We encourage all employees
and Owner Operators to share their ideas of improvement.

Responsible Care –
Sustainability Workshop
Jeff Waite and Rene Ruel, members of the Responsible Care
Leadership Team, attended a two day Responsible Care
Workshop in November on Sustainability. They met with other
chemical leaders from Canada, the US and Europe to discuss
sustainability needs and ideas for advancement. The workshop
was held in Toronto where Jeff and Rene attended insightful
information sessions on sustainability and what direction it is
taking globally in leading chemical companies. These ideas will
be brought back to the Responsible Care Leadership Team for
discussion as a means of identifying certain key sustainability
initiatives that Harmac will undertake as part of its continuous
improvement efforts as a Responsible Care transportation
partner.

Movember!
In November our Operations Manager for Maritime Petroleum
– Joe Johnson - participated in the annual Movember mustache
campaign. Joe committed to growing a moustache for the month
of November to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer
and male mental health.
New Company Units

In our ongoing efforts to maintain high-quality equipment across
the company, the Montreal Petroleum Division recently updated
their existing company fleet with10 new 2013 Kenworth trucks.

To highlight the importance of Joe’s efforts he wanted to make
everyone aware of these statistics:
• 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their
lifetime
• This year 26,500 new cases of the disease will be diagnosed
• 1 in 5 men will experience a mental illness this year

Contract Award – ERP – East
The Imperial Oil contract in Ontario for retail, industrial and jet
fuel was recently awarded to Seaboard Central Operations; the
new term begins March 1, 2013. This is very much a testament
to the commitment shown by our driving staff and operations
group to the high standard of safety and service that Imperial Oil
demands of their contractors.

Colin Harvey a driver in Newfoundland was surprised on his
birthday with this creative Birthday cake. His wife Maureen
made this very unique cake with chocolate and vanilla
cream! Happy 38th Birthday Colin!

Multiple Unit Contractor
(M.U.C.) Program Launch
On November 1st we launched the M.U.C. program for all Owner/
Operators in Central and Atlantic Canada who own multiple
units. This program has four objectives:
1. Develop and maintain a close connection to the M.U.C.s in
our organization
2. Incent and facilitate business growth of M.U.C.s
3. Manage the risks associated with M.U.C.s
4. Establish and maintain operating standards and
requirements for M.U.C.s
Complete program details, including a list of all financial
incentives, can be found in the M.U.C. program brochures that are
available at our various terminals across Canada. If you wish to

Membership
In April 2012 we launched a partnership with GoodLife Fitness
Clubs across Canada to offer all employees and Owner Operators
a discounted membership rate. Physical activity is an important
part of our employee’s overall health and we are pleased to assist
in making it more affordable to all members of our organization.
This initiative is part of our corporate mandate to assist our
employees in improving their overall health and wellness.
The discounted membership rate is $35.42 plus applicable
provincial taxes and is deducted directly through Payroll.

to appropriate contacts, sorting mail, entering
data and administrative support.
