Beastly
Toddler Cardigan
from
running jack knits

Beastly is a cabled raglan unisex cardigan for toddlers. It is worked flat from the bottom up,
with ribbed sleeves worked in the round from the bottom up and joined to the body at the
yoke. Stitches are picked up for the button band afterward. There are two small underarm
seams.
Yarn: You will need approximately 300 yards of an aran-weight wool for best results.

100% wool)
Supplies: 16” (or longer) US size 8 circular needle
Four US size 8 double-pointed needles
US size 8 cable needle or other cabling method of your choice
stitch holder or waste yarn
Five 1” buttons
needle and thread
tapestry needle
Gauge: 4 inches = 16 sts / 24 rows in stockinette
Sizing: Finished cardigan will measure approximately 18” in circumference at the waist and
approximately 11” in length from the shoulder to the hem when laid flat. It will fit most 12- to
18-month-old children with approximately 1” negative ease. See schematic at the end of the
pattern for more detailed measurements.

k = knit
p = purl
(x) = repeat x as indicated
CO = cast on
BO = bind off
RS = right side
WS = wrong side
k2tog = knit the next 2 sts together as one st.
ssk = slip slip knit: Slip one stitch, then slip the next. Insert left needle into the front loops of
the slipped stitches and knit them together through the back loops.

Body (worked flat):
Collar:
CO 90 sts.
Row 21 (WS): p2, (k2, p2) to end.
Row 22 (RS): k2, (p2, k2) to end.
Rows 23-26: Repeat Rows 21-22 two more
times.
Row 1 (WS): p2, (k2, p2) to end.
Row 2 (RS): k2, (p2, k2) to end.
Rows 3-8: Repeat Rows 1-2 three more
times.
Row 9: Repeat Row 1.
BO all sts.
Rows 10-48: Follow Chart A (Body),
reading right to left on RS rows and left to
right on WS rows.
With RS facing, pick up and knit 46 sts from
left front.
After Row 48, place remaining sts on waste
yarn, or leave on circular needle.
Sleeves (worked in the round):
CO 28 sts. Join to work in the round, being
careful not to twist.
Round 1: (p2, k2) to end.
Left Button Band:
Row 1 (WS): p2, (k2, p2) to end.
Row 2 (RS): k2, (p2, k2) to end.
Rows 3-4: Repeat Rows 1-2.
Row 5: (work 3 sts in ribbing, BO 3, work 3
sts in ribbing) 5x, p1.
Row 6: k1, (work 3 sts in ribbing, CO 3 over
gap, work 3 sts in ribbing) 5x.
Rows 7-8: Repeat Rows 1-2.
Row 9: Repeat Row 1.
BO all sts.
Repeat Round 1 until sleeve measures 8”.
Next Round: BO 6, continue in ribbing to
end. Place remaining 22 sts on stitch holder
or waste yarn. Make 2 sleeves.
Yoke (worked flat):
Following Row 1 of Chart B (Yoke), which is
a WS row, work 20 sts from left front, 22 sts
from left sleeve, 38 sts from back, 22 sts
from right sleeve, and 20 sts from right
front. 122 sts.
Rows 2-20: Follow Chart B (Yoke), reading
right to left on RS rows and left to right on
WS rows.
Right Button Band:
With RS facing, pick up and knit 46 sts from
right front.
Row 1 (WS): p2, (k2, p2) to end.
Row 2 (RS): k2, (p2, k2) to end.
Rows 3-8: Repeat Rows 1-2 three more
times.
Row 9: Repeat Row 1.
BO all sts. Sew buttons on right button band
opposite buttonholes.
Sew underarm seams closed. Using tapestry
needle, weave in all loose ends.
