Wenn du Gott im Herzen hast, musst du ihn auch bekennen,
denn wem das Herz voll ist, dem läuft der Mund über. Jesus
hatte seinen Jüngern versprochen, dass der Heilige Geist sie
befähigen würde seine Zeugen in Jerusalem, Judäa und
Samarien und bis an das Ende der Erde zu sein. Die Apostelgeschichte bezeugt davon welch wunderbare Zeugen die
ersten Christen waren.
Paulus schreibt der Gemeinde in Korinth, dass wir mit anderen über unseren
Glauben reden dürfen weil wir den Geist des Glaubens haben. (2.Kor.4:13)
Am Abend des ersten Tages der Woche, hatten sich alle Jünger versammelt.
Aus Angst vor den Juden hatten sie sich eingeschlossen. Plötzlich war Jesus
bei ihnen und sagte: “Friede sei mit euch!” Und noch einmal sagte er: “Friede
sei mit euch! Wie mich der Vater gesandt hat, so sende ich euch in die
Welt!” (Joh.20:19,21).
Bei Jesus ersten Begegnung mit seinen Jüngern nach seiner Auferstehung, gab
er ihnen einen wichtigen Auftrag: “Wie mich der Vater gesandt hat, so sende
ich euch.” Wozu Jesus in diese Welt kam, war um den Menschen die Heilsbotschaft Gottes zu bringen. Dieses hat er auch treu bis zu seinem Tod am
Kreuz getan. Gott gab ihm die Kraft dazu.
Die Zeit kam, dass Jesus zu seinem Vater zurückkehrte. Seine Nachfolger sollten das Werk das er angefangen hatte weiter führen. Genau wie Gott ihn gesandt hatte, sandte er nun seine Jünger die frohe Botschaft zu verkündigen.
Drei Jahre lang waren sie mit ihm unterwegs gewesen und er hat sie gelehrt.
Aber nun war es soweit, dass sie es denen weiter sagen sollten die die
Botschaft noch nicht gehört hatten. Dann blies er sie an und sprach:
“Empfanget den heiligen Geist!” (Joh.20:22)
Wenn du ein Kind Gottes bist, bist du auch sein Zeuge. Ein Nachfolger ist
gleichzeitig einer der andere zur Nachfolge ruft und ermutigt.
Wie gesegnet sind wir, dass wir auch Gottes Geist empfangen haben für diesen
Ruf.
Hilf mir, Heiliger Geist, dass ich den mir anvertrauten Dienst in Treue verrichten kann zur Ehre deines Namens. Amen.

If you have God in your heart, you cannot help but spread
the good news of Jesus. Jesus promised His disciples that
the Holy Spirit would make them witnesses so that His message could be spread in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the
ends of the world. The whole book of Acts is testimony of
what exceptional witnesses the early Christians were.
Paul writes to the church in Corinth that we can speak to others about our faith
because we have the Spirit of faith to empower us. (2.Cor.4:13.)
On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together,
with the doors locked in fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them
and said, “Peace be with you!” Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the
Father has sent Me, I am sending you.” (John 20:19,21).
The first time that Jesus appeared to His disciples after His resurrection, He had
a very important message for them, “As the Father has sent Me, so I am sending you.” The work that Jesus came to accomplish on earth was to proclaim
the message of salvation an obligation that He carried out with diligence up to
His crucifixion and death. God Himself equipped Jesus for the task.
The time came for Jesus to return to His Father, but He left His followers behind to continue His work on earth. As Jesus was sent by God, He also sent his
disciples to proclaim His joyful message further. During the three years that
they had worked with Him, Jesus had prepared them for this important work.
Now the time had come to spread the Gospel to all who did not know Him yet.
Jesus breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” (v.22).
If you belong to God, you are automatically one of His witnesses, you actually
have no choice in the matter. A disciple is at the same time also a disciplemaker, otherwise he completely misses his purpose.
Fortunately for you, you have also received the Holy Spirit to help you with
this task.
Holy Spirit, I praise You because You are with me to equip me to witness
for God in the world. Please help me with my work on earth. Amen.

Peter und Ingrid Bunge
Peter wurde am 7.November 1954 in Pietermaritzburg geboren. Seine Eltern
sind Edgar und Denise geb. Bührmann. In Bishopstowe wurde er getauft. Er
besuchte erst die Prestbury Primary Schule und dann die Wartburg Primary
Schule und Hochschule.
Ingrid wurde am 30.August 1960 in Greytown geboren. Ihre Eltern sind Willy
Meyer und Ella geb. Ortmann. Sie wurde in Hermannsburg am 18.September
1960 getauft. Ihre Schuljahre verbrachte sie in Hermannsburg und Greytown.
Peter und Ingrid heirateten am 17.April 1982 in Greytown. Sie leben in Pietermaritzburg und waren erst Mitglieder der Bishopstowe Gemeinde und später
der Hayfields Gemeinde nach dem Zusammenschluss der beiden Gemeinden.
Ihre Ehe wurde mit zwei Kindern gesegnet, Denzil und Carmen. Denzil hat
ein CA und arbeitet bei Deloitte. Er und seine Frau Christine wohnen in Johannesburg mit ihren beiden Söhnen, Luke und Ryan.
Carmen ist Lehrerin und mit Mark Meyer verheiratet. Mark ist Pastor an der
Concordia (Gerdau) Gemeinde und an der Potchefstroom Gemeinde. Sie
wohnen in Hakboslaagte im Nord-West und haben einen Sohn Matthew und ein
Töchterchen, Megan.
Wir sind dankbar für allen empfangenen
Segen im Leben auch dass wir Glieder dieser Gemeinde sein dürfen.
Auch wir, eure Gemeinde sind froh, dass
ihr zu uns gehört. Dazu möchten wir erwähnen, dass Peter als Schuljunge Saat
von Yellowwood Bäumen sammelte und in
Behältern kleine Bäumchen zog. Sobald
sie groß genug waren, wurden sie bei der
Bischopstowe Kirche gepflanzt. Sie machen jetzt dort wunderschönen Schatten.

Peter and Ingrid Bunge
Peter Bunge was born on
7 November 1954 in Pietermaritzburg to Edgar and Denise
Bunge (nee Bührmann). He
was baptized in Bishopstowe.
Peter attended Prestbury Primary School first and later
Wartburg Primary and High
School.
Ingid was born on the 30 August 1960 in Greytown. Her parents are
Willy and Ella Meyer (nee Ortmann). She was baptized in Hermannsburg on 18 September 1960. Ingrid attended school in Hermannsburg and Greytown.
Peter and Ingrid were married on 17 April 1982 in the Greytown Lutheran Church. They live in Pietermaritzburg and were originally
members of the Bishopstowe Congregation, joining the Hayfields
Congregation after the amalgamation of the congregations. Their
marriage was blessed with two children – Denzil and Carmen. Denzil, who is CA at Deloitte, and his wife Christine, live in Johannesburg and have two boys, Luke and Ryan.
Carmen is a teacher. Her husband Mark is Pastor of the Concordia
(Gerdau) and Potchefstroom congregations. They live in Hakboslaagte (North West) with their son, Matthew and a little daughter,
Megan.
Peter and Ingrid are thankful for all the blessings they have been able
to experience in their lives and that they are part of the Hayfields
congregation.
We too are pleased that you are members of our congregation. We
would like to add to the above, that as a school boy, Peter collected
yellowwood seeds and grew little trees in containers. As soon as the
trees were large enough for transplanting, they were planted at the
Bishopstowe church. They are now beautiful shade trees.

Himmelfahrt

Auf diesem Bild sehen wir dargestellt:
Christus entschwebt in den Himmel; zurück auf Erden bleiben die Spuren
seiner Füsse und die Schar der Menschen, die an ihn glaubt. Die Spuren seiner
Füsse sind in die Mitte des Bildes gerückt. Das soll wohl heissen, dass diese
Spuren wichtig sind. Sie sind da, und sie sollen bleiben.
In der Apostelgeschichte, Kapitel 1, wo von der Himmelfahrt Christi erzählt
wird, werden die Männer und Frauen, die dem auffahrenden Christus
nachsehen, von zwei Engeln sehr direkt gefragt: „Was steht ihr da und seht
zum Himmel?“ Sie sollen offenbar auf die Erde sehen, auf diese achtgeben,
Christi Spuren auf ihr suchen und ihnen nachgehen.
Himmelfahrt bedeutet nicht, dass Christus sich von der Erde verabschiedet und
ihr den Rücken zugekehrt hätte. Sie bedeutet, dass er überall auf Erden und im
Himmel seinen Ort hat und wirkt. Der Himmelfahrt vorraus geht der
sogenannte „Missionsbefehl“ an die Männer und Frauen , vor deren Augen
Christus dann emporgehoben wird: Sie sollen „bis an die Enden der Erde“
seine Zeugen sein.
CHRIST’S ASCENSION

Christus ist nicht an Raum und Zeit gebunden, nicht auf Galiläa oder Jerusalem
beschränkt, nicht auf die Zeit, als Pontius Pilatus Statthalter in Judäa war, auf
die Jahre zwischen 28. und 30. Jede Zeit kann zur Zeit seiner Gegenwart
werden. Man muss nicht vorgestrig sein, man muss nicht im Heiligen Land
leben, um Erfahrungen mit Christus zu machen. Hier und heute werden diese
Erfahrungen mit ihm gemacht. Jeder Ort und jede Zeit ist Ort und Zeit, da
Christus neu Glauben weckt und damit gegenwärtig ist. - Das ist der Sinn der
Geschichte von der Himmelfahrt Christi.

In the picture we see Jesus ascending into heaven. The only visible
sign remaining of him on earth are his footprints and the many people
believing in Him. His footprints dominate the centre of the picture.
This creates the impression that his footprints are important. They
are there and meant to stay.
In Acts 1 where we read about Christ being taken up before their
eyes, the disciples remaining behind were asked by two angels:
„Why do you stand there looking into the sky?“ They should surely
be looking at the earth, venerate it and search for Christ’s footprints
on it and follow them.
Ascension does not mean that Christ has taken his leave of us and
abandoned this world. It means he is now everywhere, on earth and
in heaven. This is where his place is, where he acts and where his
presence is felt. The commission to his disciples, men and women
alike, before his ascension, was: „You will be my witnesses to the
ends of the earth.“
Christ is not bound to time and place, not confined to Galilee or
Jerusalem, not to the times when Pontius Pilate was Governor of
Judah, between the years 28 to 30 AD. He is present at all times,
then and now and you do not have to live in the past or in the Holy
Land to experience Christ. Christ’s presence can be experienced
everywhere and at any time. Here and today new beginnings with
Him can be made. That is the meaning of Christ‘s ascension.

Dear Congregation
Our Easter Evening was such an enjoyable evening as a result of all the hard
work that was put into it. We thank everybody who spent hours decorating
eggs, baking, helping with all the preparations and working so willingly on the
evening. An amount of R28 000 was raised.
The activity in the hall was followed by the devotion in the church. The theme
being Psalm 23. The music, the choir, the floral arrangements and the message
by Pastor Röhrs were a fitting start to the ‘Stille Woche”, the Holy Week.
Part of the message was of a little girl who had to recite Psalm 23 in church.
She learnt and practiced at home and new it so well. Then standing in front of
so many people in church she started: “The Lord is my Shepherd”….. silence.
Again: “The Lord is my Shepherd”….. once more silence.
Again: “The Lord is my Shepherd”….. And then she said: :”That is enough!”
Was she not right? “The Lord is my Shepherd” - if we accept this it is enough!
Thank you for a wonderful evening!

Visitation 5 – 7 September 2014

On the weekend of 20 – 22 April 2007 our congregation hosted our
last visitation. The usual cycle for visitations is six years, but with
our change in Pastors the Circuit Council thought it might be more
valuable to postpone the visitation by a year. Either way, we are in a
bit of a transition period, but that doesn’t matter, life is all about transition periods, sometimes we don’t even know it.
Our next visitation takes place on the weekend of 5 -7 September
2014. In my position in our Circuit Council, I have had the pleasure
of visiting several congregations in our Southern Circuit and always
find it to be a very positive, encouraging experience, and leave having made fresh insights and new friends. To be part of a visitation
team has been a great blessing for me every time!
I realise that a visitation is a lot of work for the congregation. There
is a lot of preparation of reports beforehand and then also the hosting
and catering for the visitation team, but I would just like to assure
you all that it is not something we should be afraid of. In hindsight,
the congregations will mention their visitation as a highlight of the
year. To quote our previous Dean, Gilbert Filter, in the introduction to
a recent visitation: “The visitation was not an inspection to find fault,
but a discovery of what is happening and to rejoice with the congregation.” Let us bear that in mind when we prepare ourselves for this
visitation!
We will be discussing the details in our next Extended Council Meeting on 14 May at 17h30 in the Lutheran Centre. All are welcome.

Visitation 5 – 7 September 2014

Am Wochenend 20.-22 April 2007 fand die letzte Visitation unserer
Gemeinde statt. Normalerweise werden Gemeinden alle sechs Jahre
visitiert, aber da wir gerade einen Pastorenwechsel hatten, fand unser
Dekanatsvorstand es gut, die Visitation um ein Jahr zu verschieben.
So oder so befinden wir uns in einer Übergangszeit, aber das ist nicht
so schlimm. Das Leben ist schliesslich voller Übergangszeiten,
manchmal merken wir es gar nicht.
Unsere nächste Visitation findet also am Wochenend 5. bis 7.
September statt. In meinem Amt im Dekanat habe ich bereits bei
mehreren Visitationen in unserem Süddekanat mitgemacht und erlebe
es immer wieder als eine sehr positive, ermutigende Erfahrung und
verlasse die Gemeinden jedes mal mit neuem Verständnis und neuen
Freundschaften, die ich im Laufe des Wochenendes geschlossen
habe. Um Teil des Teams zu sein, ist für mich immer wieder ein
Segen!
Natürlich heisst Visitation für die Gemeinde eine Menge Arbeit.
Zuerst die Vorbereitungen, die vielen Berichte, die geschrieben
werden müssen und dann auch am Wochenende die Bewirtung und
Unterkunft der Gäste. Aber ich möchte Euch allen einfach mal Mut
machen, keine Angst vor der Visitation zu haben. Im Rückblick sagen
viele Gemeinden, dass die Vistation für sie ein Höhepunkt des Jahres
war. In der Einleitung zu einer vorigen Visitation, sagte unser
damaliger Dekan, Gilbert Filter, die Visitation sei nicht eine
Inspektion, die nach Fehlern sucht, sondern eher eine Entdeckung
von dem, was in der Gemeinde los ist und ein gemeinsames Erfreuen
daran. Lasst uns das im Auge behalten, während wir uns auf unsere
Visitation vorbereiten.
Beim nächsten Extended Council, am 14. Mai um 17h30, wird die
Visitation genauer besprochen. (Alle sind dazu herzlich willkommen)

Isaiah 43,1: Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you
by name, you are mine!
This was the message of the family service with the baptism of
Kaden Stewart on 13 April. God has redeemed us through Jesus
Christ, his Son. Jesus showed us God’s love by dying on the cross for
our sins. He was, however, raised from the dead and calls each and
every one of us to receive eternal life. God is interested in every human being – He created us and loves us dearly. His hand calls us to
come to Him – not only at our baptism but again and again during
the course of our lives.
In the picture we see the hand of God – calling us and carrying us
through joys and sorrows. The people in the picture are all different –
but everyone is called by his/her name, belongs to God and is safe in
his hand. This is also true for our congregation: Although we are all
different – we belong to God and to one another through Jesus Christ.
Our church services, house groups, the music and all activities want
to show us the hand of God, calling and inviting us to come and to
experience God’s love. Do you hear Him calling you?

On this occasion we will be bringing in one aspect of
“greening”, but by a somewhat unusual route. Our
topic is “Bonsai trees and what they are.” A recent
talk to our Seniors by Mr. Juergen Nuss (who lives in
Pietermaritzburg, and is a real “fundi” on the topic),
inspired us to find out more about bonsai trees.
According to Google a bonsai tree is not a specific
type of tree, but any tree that is grown in miniature to
resemble an aged tree.
Included on this page are some photos we took in the Nuss garden (the home of
some 900 bonsai trees!) Two aspects which made a strong impression on us
were, firstly, the magnificent roots (all gnarled and fissured) at the base of the
tree and, secondly, the rest of the tree. This consisted of a short, thick trunk
(also very weathered) leading to an unexpected profusion of young branchlets
bearing a spectacular array of glossy green leaves. This startling contrast
evokes an almost biblical connotation!
What does one do to grow a bonsai tree? Go into the wilds, where the soil is
barren and strewn with rocks, and where indigenous trees, (or others), are really
struggling to exist. Dig one of these out very carefully, being gentle not to damage the protruding roots. (Mr. Nuss finds many of his specimens around deserted kraals, and old cemeteries, such as the one in Hermannsburg). The next
step is to cut back the main stem and immerse the roots in a “growth tank”
filled with nutrients to promote new root growth. Thereafter plant the tree in a
shallow earthenware dish filled with a sand and compost mixture, water it
daily, but sparingly.
One word of caution! The above very
brief and superficial instructions are
highly unlikely to result in a successful
bonsai plant first time round. People
like Mr. Nuss have spent a lifetime perfecting the technique to become the master that he is now.

Einen ganz wunderschönen Abschiedsgottesdienst
bekam Gunther zu seiner Heimfahrt zu seinem Gott.
Ein herzlicher Dank geht an Euch alle, die dazu mitgeholfen haben: der Posaunenchor, der Chor, Rona an
der Orgel, Euch Frauen die Erfrischungen besorgten:
Wal Bornheimer, die, wie immer so gut organisiert
hat. Vielen Dank euch Pastoren Röhrs für die Besuche
bei Gunther und Victors Teil an der Trauerfeier.
Zuletzt Bischof Horst Müller, der zuerst Gunthers
Student, dann sein Pastor und jetzt sein Bischof (und
Freund!) ist, für seine unvergessliche Predigt die so
ganz den Charakter von Gunther wiedergab und unsere Herzen erwärmte.

What a wonderful service was given to Gunther for his farewell to heaven!
Thank you to all of you who were involved: The brassband, the choir, Rona at
the organ; all you ladies supplying the eats; Wal Bornheimer organizing so well
like always. Thank you to the Pastors Röhrs for the several visits to Gunther and
to Victor for his part in the service and to Bishop Müller who was Gunther’s
student, then his Pastor (and friend) and now Bishop, for his unforgettable
sermon, that depicted Gunther so well. It warmed our hearts!
