Annual Report 2008-2009
From Our Director
My first year at CCAF was a virtual whirlwind of activities…meeting the children and their families, getting acquainted with
the board, staff and community partners, working though some difficult financial challenges, preparing for school re-accreditation and planning activities for our 25th Anniversary Celebration that kicked off with the new school year in August of
2009. What I learned during my first few months at CCAF is much less complicated to describe and is what makes this job,
and this place, so amazing.
I learned that there is a dedicated group of staff and volunteers at CCAF who make this place truly special. The teachers,
paraprofessionals, therapists and administrative staff really strive to function as a team, and what is best for the children is
always our first priority. As a parent, I would take great comfort in knowing that so many people, with so many talents, truly
care about my child.
I learned that the children at CCAF are surrounded by parents, grandparents and other family members and caregivers who
are concerned about the quality of education and care that their children are receiving. They
are passionate about “their” child but are also vocal advocates for children’s issues in general
and, specifically, for serving children with disabilities.
Finally, I have learned that the children are remarkable. The challenges that some of them are
fighting to overcome will move anyone, and the spirit and determination of each of them is a
joy to witness.
Henry Ward Beecher said that “Children are the hands by which we take hold of heaven.” In
my brief time of working for and with the children at CCAF, I have come to believe that we are
a community in which such lofty ideas can be realized. I appreciate being allowed to be a part
of that community.

Making a Difference
Your financial gifts to Challenged Child and Friends made a difference in the lives of children in northeast Georgia. In 2008-2009 we served 181 children with special needs and 84 children with typical development from 13
counties across the state. We continue to offer our early intervention program, out-patient therapy, extended day,
music therapy, “Summer Sensations”, and evaluation services. A new addition to our program is our partnership
with the Hall County Library System which provides enrichment through weekly story times.
The entrance to our center was enhanced by the addition of landscaping and a statue of Jennie Kern, a former
student, donated by Jennie’s friends and family. A sensory garden around the entrance was also donated by the
Butch Miller family. Now our families are inspired by the legacy of both Jennie Kern and Cole Miller and the
beautiful plantings around their statues as they come to receive services and support.
Two new fundraising events were hosted by others to help Challenged Child and Friends serve children with
disabilities. Jim Walters opened his farm in Lula as the site of Big Jim’s Shoot Out, a pheasant shoot and clay
pigeon shoot. The Art League of North Georgia and Frames You-Nique hosted a silent auction at Art on the
Square in Gainesville. Both events were so successful that they have been added to our annual calendar.
As Challenged Child and Friends prepared to celebrate our silver anniversary a change in leadership occurred.
In December, 2008, Executive Director Kathy Cook left the school and J.C. Smith was brought in to serve as
interim. Following a nationwide search, we welcomed Dr. J. David Earnest, a 20-year veteran of non-profit
management, as our new CEO. As we look back over our history, we are also looking forward. With your
support, we will continue to transform lives and offer hope to children with special needs and their families for
the next 25 years.
