Tracing the Rope – Eva Hesse
Kunst an der Grenze zum Unbeherrschbaren zu machen, das war Eva
Hesses Passion. Über zwanzig Gruppenausstellungen hatte sie für das
Jahr 1970 geplant, das Magazin Artforum hatte sie für die Titelstory ausgewählt. Die 1936 in Deutschland geborene Künstlerin war eine der
wenigen zentralen Frauenfiguren der New Yorker Kunstszene der 1960er
Jahre, der die Aufmerksamkeit der Kritiker und der Käufer zuteilwerden
sollte, bis sie im Mai 1970 an einem Hirntumor starb.
Mit sechzehn Jahren geht Hesse nach New York und beginnt für das
Magazin Seventeen zu arbeiten; sie liebt die Kunst, ist inspiriert, voller
Vitalität. Sie besucht das renommierte Pratt Institute of Design und beginnt zu malen. Jede Einschränkung und Begrenzung abstreifend, malt
sie gegen alle Regeln an. Heute kann ein Bild von ihr bis zu zehn Millionen US-Dollar kosten. Ihre Werke sind in den Sammlungen der großen
Museen der Welt vertreten.
Marcie Begleiters Dokumentarfilmdebüt vertieft das Verständnis für
Hesse als Künstlerin und Frau, deren Leben und Werk miteinander verschmolzen waren. Die intimen Tagebucheinträge Hesses, die der Narration ihren Geist verleihen, verwebt Begleiter mit einer beeindruckenden
Fülle diversen Materials: der detailreichen Dokumentation Hesses letzter
Ausstellung im Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, grobkörnigem Archivmaterial aus den 1940er, 50er und 60er Jahren, Interviews mit Lebenspartnern, engen Freunden, renommierten Galeristen und Kuratoren.
Selbstironisch, klug und mit berührender Ehrlichkeit spricht Hesse von
ihrem Anderssein, ihrer Einsamkeit, ergründet ihren künstlerischen Antrieb, beschreibt ihre Suche nach Ausdrucksformen, ihre Zweifel und
Ängste, vor allem aber ihren Glauben an die Kunst.

Regisseurin, Autorin, Designerin und Illustratorin, außerdem Spezialistin für die Prävisualisierung von Filmen. Nach langjähriger freier Arbeit
für Film- und Fernsehproduktionen gründete sie die Firma Filmboards,
zu deren Kundenstamm renommierte Produktionsfirmen wie Paramount,
Tristar, New Line und ABC zählen. Neben ihrer praktischen Arbeit lehrt
sie am Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. Seit 1996 ist sie
regelmäßig Dozentin an der ifs internationale filmschule köln. Ihr Buch
From Word to Image: Storyboarding and the Filmmaking Process gilt als
Standardwerk für Storyboard.

To create art on the verge of the uncontrollable, that was Eva Hesse's
passion. For 1970, for example, she had more than twenty group
exhibitions scheduled while Artforum Magazine was to feature her as a
cover story. Born 1936 in Germany, she was one of the few key female
figures on the 1960s New York art scene to arouse the attention of critics
and buyers alike. She died of a brain tumour in May 1970. Hesse had
moved to New York at the age of sixteen and started to work at Seventeen
Magazine. She loved art, was inspired, was full of vitality. She attended
the prestigious Pratt Institute of Design and began to paint. Rejecting
any restriction or limitation, she painted against all the rules. Today, a
picture of hers can cost US$ ten million and other works are on show at
major art museums throughout the world.
Marcie Begleiter's documentary debut deepens our understanding of
Hesse the artist as a young woman, an artist whose life and work were so
closely knit. Begleiter interweaves Hesse's intimate diary entries, which
lend the narrative its spirit, with an impressive abundance of diverse
material: a detailed documentation of Hesse's last exhibition at the
Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin; raw archival
material from the 1940s, 50s and 60s; and interviews with partners,
close friends, celebrated gallery owners and curators. Self-deprecating,
smart and with touching honesty, Hesse speaks of her otherness and
solitude, explores her artistic drive and describes her search for forms of
expression. She also tells of her doubts and fears – and, above all, of her
faith in art.

Works as a director, writer, designer and illustrator but also as a specialist
for the pre-production visualisation of films. After many years of
freelance work for film and TV, she set up Filmboards, a company whose
clients include famous companies such as Paramount, Tristar, New
Line and ABC. In addition to carrying out practical work, she teaches
at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. Since 1996, she has
lectured regularly at the international film school (ifs) in Cologne. Her
book From Word to Image: Storyboarding and the Filmmaking Process is
now regarded as the standard work on visualisation.
