My family shares an old house with 10 other families. Each family lives in two rooms of the house.
It is very crowded but I like it very much. There is always someone to chat with.
You never feel lonely. I love watching TV with the neighbours. We have one TV set that we all share.
We usually watch in the courtyard.
Every night I go to the flower seller in our street. I buy flowers for our Ganesh shrine.
Ganesh is one of our Hindu gods. He has got the head of an elephant. He protects the house
and makes sure that the people who live in it will be lucky in their lives.

There is a building site next door. Workers use carts drawn by camels
to take the building material there.

There are large shops on both sides of the street. There are shoe shops on one side.
Our street is the only place in town where you can buy shoes. You have to come here when
you need new sandals. On the other side, there are sari shops. My father owns one of them.
There is a small water place on the street corner. There are large pots of water.
You can use the little jugs and take some when you feel thirsty.

Chris McCandless – fool or hero?
KLASSE 9/10
Compare the statements by Christopher on his project with the statements
of a critic and a fan. Use these points for your hot seat discussion.
Chris
Two years he walks the earth. No phone, no pool, no pets,
no cigarettes. Ultimate freedom. An extremist. […] Escaped from
Atlanta. […] And now after two rambling years comes the final and
greatest adventure. […] No longer to be poisoned by civilization he flees,
and walks alone upon the land to become lost in the wild.
(Chris talking about his own journey)
LERNEN & ÜBEN
So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change
their situation because they are [used to] a life of security, […], but in reality nothing is more
dangerous to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of
a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure.

I was only two years old when Chris McCandless came to his untimely
death. I am now 20 years old and Chris’s story touched me so much
more than any other story I have ever heard. He is a hero and will never be
forgotten.
I personally cannot wait until I take my trip to the magic bus and pay
my respects to him. His spirit may still linger there and deserves visits.

When you consider McCandless from my perspective, you quickly see
that what he did wasn’t even particularly daring, just stupid, tragic,
and inconsiderate. First off, he spent very little time learning how to actually live
in the wild. He arrived at the Stampede Trail without even a map of the area. If he
[had] had a good map, he could have walked out of his predicament […]
Essentially, Chris McCandless committed suicide.

Beware of Bears!
Two types of bears roam the Rocky Mountains – black
bears and grizzlies – and you don’t want to meet either.
They’re not terribly common in these parts, but it’s essential
to know how to avoid dangerous encounters, and what to
do if confronted or attacked. People tend to have wrong

ideas about bears – that they can’t climb trees, for example
(they can, and very quickly) – so it’s worth picking up some
information before. Be prepared and follow the cardinal
A Green Guerrilla About Town I SOLVEIG MÖHRLE
A Tree Each Day Keeps Climate Change at Bay I
rules: don’t approach bears, don’t feed them, and don’t run.
When hiking, walk in a group and make noise – bears feel most threatened if surprised.
Many people carry a whistle; small bells, be warned, are not loud enough. Be alert when
travelling into the wind, as your scent won’t carry to warn bears of your approach, and
stay away from dead animals and berry patches, which are important food sources.
Watch for bear signs – tracks, diggings and droppings – and keep in the open as much
as possible.
SOLVEIG MÖHRLE
Camp away from rushing water, paths and animal trails, and keep the site absolutely
clean, leaving nothing hanging around in the open. Lock food and rubbish in a car, or
hang it between two trees at least 4m above ground. Take all rubbish away – don’t bury it.
Avoid smelly foods, fresh meat and fish, and don’t cook or eat in or near the tent –
lingering smells may invite unwanted nocturnal visitors. Likewise, keep food off clothes
and sleeping bags. Bears have a really good sense of smell – avoid scented cosmetics.
Bears are unpredictable, and there’s no guaranteed life-saving way of coping with an
aggressive bear. Calm behaviour, however, has proved to be the most successful

it an escape route. Whatever you do, don’t run (a bear can outrun a racehorse), nor
scream or make sudden movements (surprising the animal is the surest way to provoke

strategy. A bear moving towards you is almost sure to attack you, other signs being
whoofing noises, snapping jaws, and the head down and ears back. A bear raised on its
hind legs and sniffling is trying to identify you, so stand still and start speaking in low
tones. Ideally, you want to leave the area or wait for the bear to do so – and always leave
throw anything. If things look ominous, put your backpack on the ground as a distraction.
Forget about trees, as black bears can climb them better than you, though grizzlies may
get bored after about four metres. If you’re attacked, things are truly grim. With grizzlies,
playing dead – curling up in a ball, protecting face, neck and abdomen – may be effective.
Fighting back will only increase the ferocity of a grizzly attack, but a good bop to the nose
will sometimes send a black bear running: it’s worth a try. As a last resort only, try to
intimidate the bear with anything at hand.
