SPRING 2016 FLEX WEEK: FALL 2015 HIGHLIGHTS
Spring Semester 2016
Dear Friends and Colleagues:
As I reflect on the past semester and look forward to the new semester that is just beginning, I have
the distinct pleasure of presenting the highlights of Fall Semester 2015 to you in this booklet. We’re all
so busy that we usually don’t have time to reflect on our many successes. By the time one semester is
finishing, we’re busy preparing for the new semester and its many challenges and deadlines. Here is a
chance to be reminded of all that we’ve accomplished in the past sixteen weeks.
Accomplishments don’t happen in a vacuum. It’s the shared commitment by faculty, staff and
administrators that allows IVC to create and strengthen the many services and programs that underlie
our commitment to student success. I commend you for all your hard work, both in and out of the
classroom.
Have a wonderful, productive Spring Semester 2016.
Respectfully,
President Glenn R. Roquemore

SPRING 2016 FLEX WEEK: FALL 2015 HIGHLIGHTS
AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF COMMUNITY COLLEGES (AACC) PATHWAYS PROJECT GRANT
IVC is one of 30 colleges (and one of only three in California) selected to participate in the AACC Pathways
Project, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. AACC is coordinating a national partnership
to build capacity for community colleges to implement a pathways approach to student success and
college completion. The selected colleges will be the first to participate in the Pathways Institute series
over the next 2.5 years, and will work with expert coaches to advance the efforts of their institution. In
addition, the participating colleges themselves will contribute to learning both across the initiative and,
more broadly, across the community college field.
RISING DATA NASA GRANT
IVC has received funding under the Rising Data NASA grant that aims to increase interest in university
engineering programs and NASA-related career pathways by providing hands-on flight project
experiences. Professor Alec Sim (Physics) and Professor Brian Monacelli (Electronics) have led the
grant initiatives at IVC in partnership with the NASA Flight Research Center, other Hispanic-serving
California community colleges, and California state universities. The Rising Data STEM course will:
widen the available curricular pathways to engineering; support the success of students in STEM degree
programs; and help to increase the number of traditionally under-represented students who complete
STEM certificates at the consortium colleges (with a specific focus on Hispanic and female students).
The Rising Data program will immerse students and faculty in NASA’s mission and unique assets, while
providing focused, real-world experiences for the students. IVC will participate in the program as a pilot
school in 2017.
VETERANS INITIATIVE GRANT
The IVC Foundation, through the Orange County Community Foundation (OCCF), will receive a $75,000
grant to support veterans initiatives at Irvine Valley College. This grant will enable the Veterans Services
Center to launch a pilot program to connect support services to post-9/11 veterans and their families,
providing case management and peer navigator follow-up. The money received by IVC is part of a
total $500,000 grant that OCCF is awarding to seven Orange County nonprofits to help Orange County
veterans transition back to civilian life.
AANAPISI GRANT
IVC is now an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander (AANAPISI)-serving institution.
IVC was recently awarded a $1.5 million federal grant through the AANAPISI program to create an
Intercultural Center that will provide support to students who are interested in science, technology,
engineering, art and mathematics. The center will come online in 2016 and will provide access to
cutting-edge 3D visualization workstations, as well as faculty and peer mentoring services.
ATEP
As of late 2015, land exchanges have successfully
taken place between SOCCCD and the city of
Tustin, former MCAS-Tustin base structures have
been demolished, and funding for the first multistory, mixed-use classroom and lab building, as
well as utilities infrastructure, has been secured.
This first “real” building at ATEP is being designed
to house career technical programs for IVC. It is
fully funded and expected to open for instruction
in January 2018.

ACTIVE SHOOTER SURVIVAL TRAINING
The IVC Police Department held four training workshops for students, faculty, staff and administrators
to learn what to do in the event of an active shooter on campus. Attendees learned that the best modes
of protection are to either run and call the police once a safe location has been reached; hide by staying
out of the shooter’s vision; or, as a last resort, fight until the shooter is restricted or unarmed.
FALL FORUMS
Two IVC Fall Forums were held in the A 100 Lobby on November 3, from 11 am to 12:30 pm and from
5 to 6:30 pm. President Roquemore offered brief opening comments. Additional presentations were
given by each of the vice presidents, including: Dr. Craig Justice, Vice President for Instruction; Dr.
Linda Fontanilla, Vice President for Student Services; and Davit Khachatryan, Vice President for College
Administrative Services. Also on the panel were: Dr. Kathy Schmeidler, President, IVC Academic Senate;
Karen Martin, President, IVC Classified Senate; and Adam Totounji, President, ASIVC. Chief of Police Will
Glenn provided an update on campus safety. Both forums provided the audience an opportunity to
participate in a Q & A session and an open dialogue with the representatives of IVC’s shared governance
model.
CCC BOARD OF GOVERNORS SUSTAINABILITY AWARD
IVC received an Honorable Mention in the California Community Colleges (CCC) Board of Governors 2015
Energy and Sustainability Awards competition. IVC was recognized for its Exterior Lighting Retrofit—
Phase 1 in the Retrofit Project category for the lighting retrofit project that took place over the summer
of 2014. The lighting retrofit created $64,992 in savings per year for our college.
MILITARY FRIENDLY SCHOOL DESIGNATION
IVC has again been designated a Military Friendly school. The
Military Friendly ratings recognize colleges and companies
with leading programs for veterans, members of the Armed
Forces leaving military service and military wives. They are also
recognized for their efforts and ability to recruit, develop and
retain military veterans and their spouses. Those who receive
the designation each year exhibit best practices in support of
military students and employees, respectively. Each college,
university or employer is scored against benchmark indicators
of success, which include: support for student veterans
on campus; graduation and employment outcomes; and
military spouse policies. IVC has received the Military Friendly
designation for the past five years.
CALIFORNIA STATE TREASURER JOHN CHIANG VISITS
IVC
California State Treasurer John Chiang gave a lively and wellreceived presentation on the budget to a standing-room-only
audience of students, faculty, staff and members of the
community. The event was hosted by the IVC Accounting Society
and the School of Business Sciences, and was coordinated by
Professor Bennet Tchaikovsky.

30TH ANNIVERSARY COMMUNITY OUTREACH MIXER
IVC marked the celebration of 30 years of student success and business
and community partnerships with a community outreach mixer in
October. The event was a huge success, with guests spilling out of A
100 into the patio. Many business and community supporters were in
attendance, as well as students, staff, alumni, administrators, trustees,
and members of the IVC Foundation board. Music was provided by the
IVC Instrumental Music program; there was wine, a buffet, and lots of
30th anniversary cupcakes for dessert!
PRESIDENT’S AWARDS 2015
President Roquemore awarded the President’s 2015 Award for Administration to Corine Doughty in
recognition of her leadership in developing ATEP and strong CTE and workforce development programs.

smoke-free signs and decals were placed around the campus and on the doors of each building to make
students, visitors, faculty and staff aware of the policy. In addition, IVC created flyers, fact sheets and a
website to help inform the IVC community of the smoke-free policy, as well as providing resources for
smoking cessation to those who need them. The policy was quickly embraced by the vast majority of IVC
students, faculty and staff, who were very supportive of the new policy when it was being proposed and
discussed in shared governance groups prior to ratification and implementation. During Fall Semester
2015 it was apparent that the campus enthusiastically embraced the smoke-free policy.
