Your Connection to Reading, Learning and Growing for 50 Years
We’re celebrating our Friends!
As Director of the Geauga County
Public Library, I am often envied
by my colleagues at similar sized
libraries. In addition to admiring
our high circulation numbers, they
marvel at our SEVEN Friends of
the Library groups.
Our Friends groups are:
• Bainbridge
Friends of the Library
• Bookmobile
Friends of the Library
• Chardon
Friends of the Library
• East Geauga
Friends of the Library
• Geauga West

Each group supports its local
library, station, or the bookmobile,
and each has its own personality.
While they differ in numbers of
members or programs they sponsor, each group has the basic
mission to assist
and support its
local library and
the library system. Through
their used book
sales and other
fundraisers,
they are able to
sponsor children’s
and adults programs, purchase
needed equipment, provide
refreshments and support us in the
community. Did you know that
our Bookmobile group is the
ONLY bookmobile friends group
in Ohio?
friends groups, Chardon and
Geauga West, have been named
Ohio Library Council’s “Friends
Group of the Year” in the past. All
of our friends groups welcome
new members and I encourage
you to visit the
library’s web page
and go to the
section called
“Locations”. Each
library is listed
with a link to each
friends page that
contains a membership form.

Hundreds of your friends and
neighbors are members of our
Friends of the Library groups,
why not you?
On baseball and books: Larry Dolan’s connection
to GCPL and the Cleveland Indians
Cleveland baseball in October
may feel like fiction, but if
Cleveland Indians owner Larry
Dolan has his way, a new book
about baseball will soon be available in libraries and bookstores
across the country. In the nonfiction section.
Dolan moves slowly these days,
but on the subjects of baseball or
books, he speaks excitedly, with
passion. He’s owned the team
since 2000, and has endured a lot
of criticism for the franchise’s
inability to field a team competitive through the playoffs.
But criticism is something he’s
handled his entire career.
In the 1960s, as an up-andcoming lawyer in Chardon,
Dolan served on the board of the
Chardon Library. At that time,
Geauga County had five separate
libraries maintaining individual
collections. Hoping to combine
services and materials as well as
be eligible for increased tax
revenues, he made the motion in
1962 to consolidate into a
unified county-wide system. “It
was a no-brainer,” he says. “It
made sense to join forces and
offer something better than what
each branch could separately.”
The motion passed and Geauga
County Public Library was
officially established July 9,
1963. “The function of a library
is to provide information and
interaction opportunities. Which
building the collection is in is less
important than the fact that we
have great materials and
programs.”
Geauga County readers score a
big win
As GCPL celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, no one quibbles
over which building their books
come from. When patrons request
GCPL Director Deborah O'Connor and Geauga Library supporter Larry Dolan
items at locations other than their
home library, they receive them
within a few days at the branch
they specify thanks to GCPL’s
delivery fleet and drivers. GCPL
circulated 2,114,604 items in
2012 among its four locations in
Bainbridge, Chardon, Chesterland
(Geauga West) and Middlefield,
along with two stations in
Newbury and Thompson and the
Bookmobile. Geauga County has
the highest circulation per capita
in the state. Geauga citizens read.
A lot.
“I’m a believer in reading,” Dolan
notes, adding that a strong community needs a vibrant library.
Dolan’s idea to combine libraries
into one system has been hugely
successful. Now, if only his baseball team would unify and win,
dare we hope, a World Series.
On Baseball
Dolan coached Little League
teams in Geauga “forever,” he
says, adding that while he was
living the baseball-dad dream, he
didn’t realize what a great time
2
he and his teams were having.
They just lived the sport.
“Practices and games were what
summer was all about. Those
days, really, were the best.”
To this day, Dolan, a former
catcher for the St. Ignatius
Wildcats, can’t drive through
Claridon without recalling his
son’s unassisted Little-League
triple play. “It was at the elementary school field on Mayfield
Road,” he recalls. “Mark was
playing first. Bases were loaded.
A line drive was nailed at him.
He caught it, stepped on first and
then ran the ball to second base
for the third out.” Dolan pauses
to laugh.
All of GCPL’s libraries celebrated 50 years of reading, learning and growing July 12, 2013 on the Chardon Square.
“He didn’t want to let the ball out
of his hands. He wanted that third
out and didn’t trust a throw or
catch. He just handled it!”
Larry and his wife Eva have six
children. Two of their sons help
run the Indians. Of this year’s
team, Dolan feels good. “We have
a strong group. We made a lot of
moves in the off season, and
they seem to be working well.
I want to win a World Series so
bad. It would be a legacy for my
grandkids, especially so they
could talk about it with their
classmates.”
He recalls the reaction of the generation that grew up seeing the
1948 World Series when the
Cleveland Indians beat the Boston
Braves. “They still talk about it,”
Dolan notes. “Winning a series
like that does so much for the
psyche of a city. You believe in
yourself. And, everyone in the
world is watching, or at least you
act as if they were.
“And the best part to me is to hear
people say: ‘We won!’ You don’t
hear shouts of ‘The Indians won!’
It’s all about being a part of something much bigger than yourself.
When the Indians win, the whole
city wins. I really want to give that
experience to northeast Ohio.”
A reader himself, Dolan enjoys
nonfiction war stories and memoirs, but one of his favorite books
is Ernest Hemingway’s The Old
Man and the Sea. Interestingly, the
Indians make a cameo in that book.
On Books
When he speaks of his role on the
Library Board, he assumes a feisty
pride in a job well done. The
result 50 years later is gratifying.
Dolan is equally animated about
reading and getting children
interested in exploring ideas. He
is a fan of the summer reading
programs and supporter of the
annual GCPL Foundation’s MiniGolf fundraiser.
“Get kids to read,” he says. “It
will impact them positively the
rest of their lives. The library is
absolutely necessary. It’s a great
environment. Schools and parents can’t do it alone. It takes a
strong community library, and
Geauga has that. People of all
ages come into our buildings.
And it begins when they are
young. That’s the power of a
good library. It accepts all. It
shares everything. And that’s
where good leadership starts.”
3
“We were able to provide a much
stronger product together than we
ever could separately,” he says.
“We’ve more than served the purpose we set out to achieve. Now,
look at our collection. Look at the
programming. Look at the buildings. Our library makes everything
in the community better.
“In fact, there’s a connection
between baseball and libraries.
They both raise a community. A
library does it silently over a period of time. Baseball and softball
programs do the same thing with
good coaching and skill building.
Both teach youngsters to believe
in themselves and explore
their world.”
Holiday trees,
wreaths and swags
Competitive crafters are invited to
participate in GCPL’s annual holiday decorating contest and silent
auction fundraisers. Crafters may
pick up small artificial trees,
wreaths or swags depending upon
location, take them home to decorate, then return them to their
library to be displayed, judged and
auctioned. Geauga West Library
offers a choice of trees or swags.
Bainbridge Library offers wreaths.
Chardon Library and Middlefield
Library offer trees.
If your bid wins, you get to choose
between displaying the piece yourself or giving it away as a holiday
gift. Tough decision!
The auctions benefit the local Friends
groups in Bainbridge, Chardon and
Geauga West Libraries. In
Middlefield, the beneficiaries are the
Friends of the Library and the
Middlefield Historical Society. Pick
up and return dates are listed below.
