Need more motivation to be part of next year’s Gibb Challenge?
Our principal beneficiary for the 2014 campaign is Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Bloody Heroic Cause
The RFDS began as the dream of the Rev John
Flynn, a minister with the Presbyterian
Church. He witnessed the daily struggle of
pioneers living in remote areas where just two
doctors provided the only medical care for an
area of almost 2 million square kilometres. Flynn’s vision was to provide a ‘mantle
of safety’ for these people and on 15 May 1928, his dream had become a reality with
the opening of the Australian Inland Mission Aerial Medical Service (later
renamed the Royal Flying Doctor Service) in Cloncurry, Queensland.
By the 1950s, the RFDS was acknowledged by former Prime Minister Sir Robert
Menzies as “perhaps the single greatest contribution to the effective settlement of
the far distant country that we have witnessed in our time.”
Until the 1960s, RFDS rarely owned their own aircraft. They used contractors to
provide aircraft, pilots and servicing. Since then, RFDS has progressively
purchased their own heavily modified aircraft and employ their own pilots and
engineers.
Today, RFDS owns a fleet of 61 fully instrumented aircraft with the very latest in
navigation technology and medical equipment. They operate 21 bases across
Australia. Their pilots annually fly the equivalent of 25 round trips to the moon
and their doctors and flight nurses were responsible for the care of nearly 273,731
patients in 2011/12 – that’s around one person every two minutes! They’ve come a
long way from that first flight in 1928 that saw the Flying Doctor airborne at last.

The Spinifex Hotel has graciously offered to
join us again as Principal Sponsor to The
Gibb Challenge. I can’t thank Emmanuel and
the Complete Group enough for their stoic
and valued support and I’m totally looking
forward to another amazing campaign in
2014!
The Spini has long been the destination for weary travellers to the Gateway of the
Kimberley. It developed its ridgy-didge iconic status through years of loyal
servitude, sating the thirst of adventurers, roustabouts and revellers to the Deep
Port Town. The Spini was also the obvious choice for touring and local bands to
energise late night celebrations and it was the relaxed kick back place to catch up
with mates and wash away the dust from a day’s toil or outback tour.
All those years in the Kimberley Sun took their toll on The Spini and it needed a bit
of a pick me up……….Hell, it needed razing and raising from the ground up. It
certainly copped a fresh start with Emmanuel and his super enthused team hitting
the ground running – and the pace hasn’t let up since! Now there’s a full bar,
restaurant, TAB, premier motel style accommodation, luxurious apartments,
refreshing swimming pool, BBQs and even a conference room…..……all created in
a lush garden setting. BEA-UT-I-FUL.
The Spinifex Hotel will naturally serve as our venue for the Registration and Safety
Briefing on the Saturday night before The Gibb Challenge and it’ll provide the
impressive backdrop for the pre-dawn mass start on Sunday morning.
Sweet, sweet deals are available exclusively to our fat tyre mob if you want to sleep
in sheer luxury, literally metres from the start line. See Where the bloody hell
are we… … … … ? for details.

Where the bloody hell are we…………?
The Spinifex Hotel is our event’s preferred accommodation provider. Support the
business that’s supporting The Gibb. It’ll be good for you, it’ll be good for them and
it’ll be good for us.
How freakin’ awesome would it be to roll into Derby (pronounced Der-bee) early
Saturday afternoon, re-fuel the rig and then swan into the foyer of the Spinifex
Hotel to check in? Grab the keys, set the room’s air conditioner to chill factor nine,
throw the overnight bag on the Queen Sized bed and then head into the restaurant
for a hearty counter meal, washed down with a frightfully cold frothy one?
Event Registration ain’t until 1600 hours so you and your scaley mates, even have
time for a quick dip in the pool or a hot lap of Derby’s historic Jetty to prime the
legs. After the Safety Briefing you might kick back in the Sports Bar and soak up
some more infectious West Kimberley hospitality or retire to the comfort of your
own private suite. Get in a few hours of ridiculously blissful sleep and then roll out
of bed and simply fall onto the starting line. No tent or swag to pack up and your
own private dunny……….YOUR OWN DUNNY - remember that simple luxury in
five days times Champ!

Muster News
The Gibb Challenge will once again, proudly feature
in the community celebrations of the Argyle
Diamonds Ord Valley Muster. Our dusty efforts will
be extolled and promoted through their very slick
media and advertising campaign, creating more
shit’n’giggles than a McDonald’s ad featuring Sam
Kekovich.
For full Muster details see www.ordvalleymuster.com
"There aren’t two better weeks to be in the East Kimberley than during the Ord
Valley Muster. The community spirit of the event leaves as strong an impression
as the awesome landscape."
Stephen Scourfield - Travel Editor, The West Australian
See? It ain’t just my opinion that this is the bestest way to spend a couple of weeks
of your life embracing the remarkable Kimberley.
M….M….MMMates rates…….
Volunteer support personnel have always been an
invaluable ingredient in our event. They’ve kept our times,
provided medical support, ensured our safe passage,
prepared gourmet meals, super heated shower water, set
our camp and even fixed our bikes through the
night……freakin’ amazing effort. We’ve been enormously
fortunate to have had some great people join us in the past
and I’m super keen to secure their services again; or maybe
yours this year.
If you’re looking for a life defining week-long adventure in the extraordinary
beauty of the Kimberley assisting community minded people in their endeavours
to raise money for bloody heroic charities, The Gibb Challenge wants YOU!
Your contribution of time and effort will greatly
assist the event through a variety of roles that
include; catering, time keeping, marshalling,
media liaison, communications, medical support,
mechanical repairs, transport or camp ground
management. See? No riding required. I’ll even
pay for your meals, camping accommodation and
wilderness park fees…………………honestly, it’s
the least I could do. You guys rock!
