The
Reality
of
by Gwen Marzano, Garden of Life
Educator and Certified RAW, Vegan Chef
The reality of childhood obesity inevitably is an emotional
and sensitive topic that many parents face today. Having
addressed this heart-wrenching topic with parents, I find
strength and courage from families who are applying new and
creative ways to come out of a dark hole we call “obesity.”
The facts are anything but pleasant. Obesity in children has
almost tripled since 1980. Approximately 17 percent of children
under the age of 18 are obese, according to the Centers for
Disease Control (CDC). Children today are eating an average of
150 pounds of sugar per year (six cups per week). In addition
to sugar, processed foods dominate almost every aisle of the
grocery store. With an increase in unhealthy food choices and
a decrease in physical activity, the consequential result is rising
childhood obesity statistics.
Obesity is harmful to the life of the child and is frustrating
to parents who want to turn it around, but sometimes don’t
know how. Parents have the most influential role in the
development of their child’s eating habits. A child pays very
close attention to his parents’ actions, including their food
choices. Enthusiastically providing a clear example of healthy
eating is of paramount importance to every child. If you aren’t
eating your greens with gusto, chances are your little one
won’t, either. On the other hand, if you love your fresh garden
fruits and vegetables, then chances are your child will, too.
It might take some ingenuity to really start to
change things around, but now is a great day
to get started on the path of healthy eating!
Here are a few tips:
• Start by preparing healthy snacks to have available
for you and your child for after-school munching.
• Challenge your child to eat a different fruit or veggie
each day of the week.
• Commit to choosing new veggies or fruits and find
new recipes to prepare them.
• Involve your child in food preparation, even if it’s just
peeling carrots or stirring a soup.
Having been a classroom teacher, I have seen
the power of motivation and reward. Affirming and
acknowledging our children are highly motivating,
whether they are in pre-school or junior high.
Additionally, hearing them out in conversations about
healthy eating is important and powerful. Allowing
them to earn a reward is empowering, too. Rewards
can be given for making positive changes and better
food choices. As an example, looking forward to a trip
to the mall or the movies could motivate your child
to make his or her own healthy lunch that week—just
to get that reward! Meanwhile, new and better eating
habits are taking shape and, hopefully, permanently
taking hold.
As your child continues with your encouragement
and example, soon he or she will find new energy and
better moods abounding! However, you may be the
one needed to take notice of and call some attention
to that fact. Relax in knowing that it’s all part of the
beginning of your child’s new healthier life, and rest
assured that your entire family will benefit from these
efforts that you chose to set in motion.
The truth is that the reality of obesity has met its
match in the reality of your influence and example.

Begin the 5-Day
Jump-Start Plan with RAW Fit™
What to Do:
For the next five days, we recommend you “Jump-Start”
your weight loss by eating healthy whole food, balanced
meals each day, two of which consist of RAW Fit.
Check out our sample menu below:
Jump-Start Sample Menu
Energizing Breakfast: 1 scoop
RAW Fit blended with 1 cup
unsweetened almond milk and
1 cup of berries.
A Healthy Snack: 2 flax crackers
and a colorful salad with
balsamic vinegar and
1 teaspoon olive oil.
A Filling Lunch: RAW Fit mixed
with unsweetened almond milk,
and a serving of fruit.
A Satisfying Dinner: 4 ounces
of salmon, a half-baked sweet
potato, green salad or veggies
and a cup of berries for dessert.
What is RAW Fit?
RAW Fit is a USDA Certified Organic,
RAW, plant-based, vegan, high-protein
powder that makes it easy to increase
your protein intake—an important
part of weight loss, especially fat loss.
Studies indicate that getting adequate protein helps tremendously
with weight management, including burning fat while retaining muscle.
In fact, protein boosts the rate at which your body repairs and builds new
muscle after a workout. And the more muscle you have, the more calories
your body burns—even while at rest—resulting in weight loss, including fat
loss, not muscle loss.
In short, RAW Fit makes it easy to get the clean and healthy protein you
need in the amounts your body needs for proper weight management with
28 grams of USDA Certified Organic plant-based protein from 13 sprouted
seeds and grains—all sustainably farmed without toxic residue.

“We’ve never felt better,” said Deborah.
“We love Garden of Life and RAW Fit!”
When Deborah and Stephen Protheroe both celebrated their
49th birthdays, they decided to make major diet and lifestyle
changes before hitting the big 5-0. Friends from the couple’s
church recommended Garden of Life® products, so they starting
using RAW Fit™ in smoothies every morning. Both of them
agreed the RAW Fit smoothies tasted great and helped them
feel full throughout the day.
In addition to the RAW Fit smoothies, the Protheroes eliminated
refined sugar and processed foods from their diets and
concentrated on eating gluten-free as much as possible. When
the pounds started to come off, they replaced two meals per
day with RAW Fit smoothies and had one nutritionally balanced
meal per day. In just five months, both were astounded by the
results. Most importantly, they are continuing to use RAW Fit
as well as Perfect Food® RAW so they add more greens to
their diet.

STEP 5
Get Your Move On!
There’s no way around this one. If you want to achieve a
healthier, leaner body, then you’ve got to get moving!
Now, your current level of activity will determine what you need to do in order
to get your body working harder so you’re burning more calories. If you’ve
been sedentary, then start out with some power walking—not a leisurely
stroll—three-to-four times per week. If you’re already walking, step it up to
a light jog or increase the number of days or time you’re spending on your
walks. If you’re currently using the elliptical trainer for 30 minutes, increase the
time to 40 minutes or try different levels of difficulty. The key to remember
is—change. Change what you’re currently doing in order to effect a change in
your body.
Tip: Once this is
easy to perform,
change again.
Try cycling,
light jogging,
swimming or an
elliptical trainer.
Here are some sample workouts, depending on your activity
level and of course, be sure to check with your physician
before starting any exercise program:
Beginner/Sedentary
Week 1
Week 3
Power Walk – 20 minutes,
3 times per week
Power Walk – 40 minutes,
4-5 times per week
Week 2
Week 4
Power Walk – 30 minutes,
3-4 times per week
Power Walk – 45 minutes,
4-5 times per week
Intermediate
Week 1
Week 3
Light Jog or Cycle – 20-30 minutes,
3-4 times per week
Medium Jog (increase your speed)
30 minutes – 4-5 times per week
Week 2
Week 4
Light Jog or Cycle – 30-40 minutes,
4-5 times per week
Medium Cycle (increase your speed)
40 minutes – 4-5 times per week
Advanced
Tip: Jogging
or cycling can
be swapped out
for swimming,
elliptical or StepMill
training—whatever
challenges you.
Change what you are doing—period.
If you run—start doing sprints or increase your distance
If you cycle—start running stadium stairs or increase your mileage
If you use an elliptical trainer—use the StepMill or increase
your intensity
And don’t forget about weight training. It is extremely important to build and maintain
muscle before, during and after any weight management program. The more muscle on
your body, the more calories it burns—even at rest. Hitting the gym or using at-home
weights or bands at least three times per week—if not more—is recommended.
In order to avoid risk of injury, please seek advice directly from your physician, especially if you have existing
medical issues, before beginning any exercise or nutritional program. Also, be sure to stretch after exercise to
avoid muscle and joint tightness.
Tip: Change the type
of workout or increase
intensity of your current
workout. It tends to shock
the body into responding.
Give it a try—see what
works for you.

Bride-To-Be Hayden Panettiere
Shines Brighter Than Ever As Nashville’s Resident Diva!
A cold snap paired with shorter daylight hours and somber
November grey skies hinted at the arrival of winter in Tennessee
when we spoke to actress Hayden Panettiere. Despite the
plummeting temps, the 24-year-old star of ABC’s hit television
show Nashville did not seem to be feeling the chill, due in part
to a fiery six-carat diamond engagement ring from Ukranian
professional boxer and fiancé Wladimir Klitschko.
After a long day of filming in Music City, where she struts her
stuff as ambitious country crooner and scheming villainess Juliette
Barnes, Hayden was upbeat and buoyant as she talked to us about
how’s she’s juggling wedding plans and career, while staying
healthy during this exciting time of her life.
Wedding planners are working feverishly—on short notice—
to pull off an event “around the 2013 holidays” for the couple,
although it’s not certain how much advance warning they
received. Hayden first started flashing the gigantic gem last
summer, but kept mum about the significance of it until she
appeared on Live! with Kelly and Michael in October. Arriving
on the set with a 20-pound live boa constrictor draped around
her tiny neck, the playful actress succeeded with her plan to
scare host Michael Strahan, who kept his distance and loudly
professed his fear of snakes. Co-host Kelly Ripa was not as
easily distracted and honed in on the ring until Hayden officially
announced her engagement.
By Rhonda Price
6’ 6” physique towers over her 5’ 2” petite frame.
Hayden fondly points out that even when they
were not dating, they always remained friends
and, eventually, she knew he was “the one.”
“I think it’s really important to be
friends and to have a mutual respect for
each other,” she mused. “We live busy,
crazy lives, but he understands my work
and vice versa. We support each other.”
Wladimir gamely escorts Hayden to a bevy of
Hollywood Red Carpet Premieres and awards
shows, while she has been spotted cheering
him on at boxing matches as he defends his
heavyweight WBA, IBF and WBO world titles.
She’s traveled with him to Europe and Russia,
and visited his family, where she marveled at his
mother’s ability to whip up borscht and other
hearty meals from scratch.
The impending nuptials are not a surprise to family and
friends who knew the couple had been dating on and off
for several years. When they first met at a mutual friend’s
party, Hayden was only 19 years old and Wladimir was
32. Now that she’s 24 and he’s 37, neither age nor height
differences hinder the couple, although reporters are
quick to note that Wladimir’s muscular
Nashville, ABC Television Network
Mark Levine
Off the set, Hayden had plenty of lessons
in singing, dancing, horseback riding,
piano and gymnastics that helped prepare
her for a slew of future roles, including
Disney’s Racing Stripes in 2005. Always
an animal lover and staunch supporter of
animal rights, she jumped at the chance
to move to South Africa for five months to
play a jockey, but suffered a concussion
and whiplash when she was thrown
from a zebra. The resilient actress was
undaunted and chose to spend the rest of
her freshman year being home schooled in
South Africa after filming ended.
“It’s amazing because she can take whatever is in
the fridge and make something delicious out of it,”
said Hayden, who doesn’t claim to be as resourceful,
but was happy to prepare a couple of her favorite
recipes on the popular cooking show The Chew
recently. With a demanding career and a professional
athlete by her side, she told us it’s not difficult to
adhere to a healthy diet.
“I think in order to stay in shape and be healthy, the
biggest factor is figuring out how to eat well,” said
Hayden. “In my business, you’re always filming on a
set, and it’s easy to take what is given to you. But after
years of trying different foods and diets, I can sense
what is working for my body and giving me the energy
I need to perform my best. I prefer lots of veggies,
healthy proteins—and I love sushi!”
From Soaps to Super Heroes
Hayden has had plenty of time to discover the
best way to endure long days of shooting under bright
lights and cameras. She was still in diapers when her
mother, a former daytime actress, enrolled her in a
modeling course that led to dozens of commercials.
A seven-year stint on the daytime dramas One Life
to Live and Guiding Light led to her first breakout
film role in Disney’s Remember the Titans with Denzel
Washington in 2000. Winning a Young Artist Award
for Best Performance in a Feature Film, Hayden
quickly became the darling of casting agents who
pegged her as the “go-to daughter” in films such as
Joe Somebody with Tim Allen and TV shows such as
Ally McBeal.
In 2006, Hayden’s tumbling skills were
tested when she starred as a cheerleader
in the film Bring It On: All or Nothing
and subsequently landed the role of
indestructible teen Claire Benet in the popular sci-fi
television series Heroes. Playing a high school student
and cheerleader with super powers, Hayden was
suddenly on everyone’s radar as the show’s success
catapulted her to stardom. She nabbed another
Young Artist Award for Best Performance on a TV
series and won numerous accolades and honors,
including People Magazine’s 100 Most Beautiful
People and Forbes’ Celebrity 100 Power List. Although
the role clearly established her as one of the most
recognizable names in Hollywood, when the series was
canceled in 2010, she admitted feeling a brief moment
of self-doubt when she thought her career might be
over and no one else would take a chance on her. Her
fears were unfounded, as she quickly got the call to
star in Scream 4 with Courtney Cox, Neve Campbell
and David Arquette, and then roared back into the
limelight in 2012 with a Golden Globe nomination
for Nashville. Dazzling fans with her energetic, onstage performances and sparkly dresses, Hayden is,
ironically, as much of a superstar as the character she
plays on the show.
Holding it All Together
Sometimes with all the drama, glitz and glamour on
Nashville, what gets lost in the shuffle are Hayden’s
vocal chops. She’s not pulling a “Milli Vanilli” or
taking round-the-clock lessons with a voice coach
to nail those huge production numbers on the show.
Instead, she’s belting out ballads with a seasoned
voice that has had plenty of recording experience in
the past 10 years, including a Grammy nomination for
the children’s animated movie A Bug’s Life, numerous
songs for Disney soundtracks and movies, and her first
pop single Wake Up Call in 2008. Fans are flocking
to iTunes for the songs she performs on Nashville
such as Hypnotizing, Telescope, and one of Hayden’s
favorites, Nothing in This World Will Ever Break My
Heart Again. When we asked her how she manages
to stay healthy, fit and sane with a packed schedule
of acting, singing and performing, she assured us
it’s not easy.
“On the set, I’m actually getting a
16-hour workout all day long,” she said.
“Being on stage and running around
in little dresses and high heels is a
workout in itself, but I also have to
perform while hiding a microphone
pack under my thigh. It’s tough!”
When she finds time to exercise off the set, she likes to
switch things up with Pilates, Bikram yoga and circuit training. She
says Wladimir is a great trainer, describing his workouts as “intense.”
“I’ve learned a lot from him about healthy eating and working out,”
she acknowledged. “But I am not a fan of regular workout routines
because my brain tells me it’s a burden and not fun! I like to do
different things I enjoy, and, lately, I’m really into Zumba® classes.
I think your body plateaus and doesn’t respond well if you do the
same thing all the time.”
As for beauty tips, she drinks lots of water every
morning—explaining she can’t sip all day with the
pesky microphone making bathroom trips tricky—
and tries to get enough sleep. Overall, she sounds
wise beyond her years when she describes what
true beauty means to her.
“I realized after years of being in this business
that beauty is an opinion, not a fact,” she said.
“Beauty really is in the eyes of the beholder, so
I think it’s that special light behind people’s eyes
that makes them beautiful. It’s the joy pouring out
of their eyes.”
If one thing is certain, Wladimir liked what
he saw so much that he put a ring on it—a big
one! We’re willing to bet we’ll be seeing a lot of
beautiful things from Hayden for years to come.

With a Little Help from RAW Meal,
Tolu Ogunyoku Goes
From “Big O” to “Little O”
and reaches his Goals
By Rhonda Price
Tolu Ogunyoku grew up as a big kid with a big appetite, routinely
devouring oversized portions at meals and grabbing unhealthy snacks
late at night. He accepted being overweight for years because it
wasn’t a problem, or at least not enough to give up the fried foods he
craved. Everything changed when he turned 30 and realized that at 358
pounds, he was a walking time bomb.
“For years, I kept telling myself that my health was fine,” Tolu said.
“I went in for my annual physical at work, and the doctor shook me up
with some warnings. I also had to admit being overweight was causing
problems with my job performance and was preventing me from
enjoying activities with my wife. I knew it was
time to do something.”
Tolu was tired of being a “super-sized” person
who often had to sit on the sidelines because
he was too heavy. On vacations with his wife, he
couldn’t fit in a boat or go parasailing. At work,
as a parole agent for the California Department
of Corrections, he was stressed out with
supervising convicted felons because
they all seemed
to be getting
stronger
and faster.
Eventually, he
realized he was
so out of shape
that he could no
longer keep up
with anyone.
Believing that
working out would
melt away the
pounds, Tolu hit the
weight room with a vengeance.
After a few weeks, the scales
didn’t move because he wasn’t
eating the right foods. That’s when
he visited Sprouts, his local health
food store in Chino Hills, California,
and purchased RAW Meal. In just
two weeks, he was amazed by
the results.
“My appetite completely changed,
and I noticed I had better control of
it,” he said. “I started losing weight,
and it became harder for me to
overeat because my stomach felt full.
When the weight started dropping, I
was motivated to change my eating
habits so I could stay on course.”
Tolu and his wife stopped buying
processed foods and anything with
preservatives, focusing instead on
lean cuts of beef, salmon and chicken
as well as brown rice and organic
fruits and vegetables. With two RAW
Meal shakes per day and a healthy
dinner, his coworkers noticed that
“Big O” was gradually becoming
“Little O.”
“I carried RAW Meal around in
those little shaker cups every day,”
he said. “I mixed it with almond milk,
water or whatever I could get my
hands on. My friends, neighbors and
coworkers saw me lose more than
100 pounds in 18 months, and now
they are hooked on RAW Meal, too!”
After losing 133 pounds, Tolu feels
great and recalls that the last time he
weighed 225 pounds, he was in junior
high school. He’s proud that he was
able to get back into the best shape
of his life before he recently became
a father. His son, Elijah Amór Abíola
Ogunyoku, weighed nine pounds
and two ounces at birth, entering
the world with a big start just like his
dad. However, with everything Tolu
has learned about healthy eating and
weight loss, Elijah is unlikely to suffer
the same fate as his father.
“I’m so grateful that
I was able to reach my
weight loss goal with
RAW Meal,” Tolu said. “It
means everything to me
that I now have the energy
and endurance to keep
up with my son as he gets
more active!”

RAW MEAL MONKS
Even though the Monks of the Sera Je Monastery in India
spend most of their days studying and isolated from the rest of
the world, nutrition is very important to them. Concerned that
they were not receiving all of the nutrients they needed to be
healthy, a friend of the monks contacted Garden of Life® to see
if we could help. Of course, we agreed to donate RAW Meal, an
excellent source of complete protein derived from brown rice
that includes 26 RAW organic sprouts, seeds, greens and fruits.
The monks vigorously study to earn their Geshe, an academic
title earned after a minimum of 12 years of non-stop studying
that can often take up to 25 years to complete. Classes are held
six days a week for 18 hours a day, with only a short time to rest
after lunch. After learning of their strenuous schedules and time
constraints, Garden of Life also shipped RAW Protein, RAW
ONE™ for Men and RAW Organics™ Chia Seed and Flaxseed.
One of the “RAW Meal Monks,” Gyalten Lekden, expressed
gratitude and appreciation for the entire group of monks using
the supplements. “Your products have been incredibly helpful. It
takes a great deal of energy to maintain the physical and mental
schedule we have, and it is not uncommon for monks to get
easily worn out, tired and sick. Your vitamins and protein have
had an immediate effect on our health and well-being, and we
are overwhelmed by your generosity and kindess!”

Have you ever been to Calgary? I hadn’t. I can
understand why anyone who has visited there
immediately talks about how beautiful it is. I arrived
mid-fall, and the leaves were at the end of their peak
and would have left a brown and red blanket on the
ground, if it weren’t for the light dusting of snow that
covered the miles of wide-open plains surrounding
the city. The approach into Calgary reminded me a lot
of Denver. Sitting about 45 minutes to the west of the
city are the majestically rugged Rocky Mountains. To
the east of the city, for as far as the eye can see, is a
combination of farmland, cattle ranches and oil. Like
Denver, Calgary is a true western town and is Canada’s
center for three significant industries: oil, mining and
beef. The city itself is a combination of modern, sleek
buildings with turn-of-the-century charm, numerous
pedestrian bike and running paths along with
innovative public art.
A Trip Full of “Firsts”
This was to be a trip full of “firsts.” My mission was
to visit—for the first time—Dr. Terry Willard at his Wild
Rose Clinic. Over the years here at Garden of Life®, I’ve
become acquainted with a number of traditional and
alternative medicine doctors, herbalists, nurse
practitioners and naturopaths, but I’d never been to
a clinic before and had never observed a clinician at
work. If I was going to start somewhere, starting with
Dr. Willard was perfect. It was a little bit like having
never tasted chocolate and then walking into the
Endangered Species® chocolates kitchens. I was
starting with the best.
Dr. Willard and I were already friendly, having
met over a year ago when Garden of Life was first
On the Road is a recurring series in
Extraordinary Health, taking you with
us as we travel to see our
different partners and suppliers.
This time, we meet up with
Dr. Terry Willard, the formulator of
the top-selling Wild Rose Herbal
D-Tox Cleanse
contemplating bringing the Wild Rose cleanse system
from Canada down to the United States. His innovative
herbal cleanse system has been the leading cleanse
product in Canada for over 35 years, and it took me
about five minutes with the formulas to realize why.
Every herb is in perfect balance. Nothing in the formula
is gratuitous. Everything is thoughtfully blended to
work in harmony with your body’s natural systems.
Dr. Willard Does Nothing for Show
If you’ve ever met Dr. Willard or heard him lecture,
you’ll understand that comment. He doesn’t do
anything for show, and he’s highly utilitarian. This was
evident 25 years ago when he spent almost a year
living off the land in the Rocky Mountains outside of
Calgary while writing his text, “Edible and Medicinal
Plants of the Rocky Mountains and Neighboring
Territories.” He lived in a tent through all four seasons.
He foraged, sometimes for hours when the plant life
was frozen during winter, to find enough plant-based
protein to sustain himself. He never took more than he
needed to survive while he catalogued the species.
If Henry David Thoreau merged with Christopher
McCandless and you sprinkled in a hefty helping of
Dr. Andrew Weil (a contemporary and friend of Dr.
Willard), the end result would be Terry Willard. He’s
thoughtful and soulful. He’s articulate and engaging
when he lectures to auditoriums or for the camera.
When counseling patients, he is practiced, direct and
efficient. His passion for healing people is obvious and
infectious in each of these settings.
Against this profile is another side of Dr. Willard.
He is entirely delighted by and comfortable with his
own company. He is the type of man who has had very
few confidants throughout his life, preferring his own
counsel and that of a trusted few. He can get absorbed
in his environment, his studies, his meditations and his
connection with nature. These environments may be the
most natural for Dr. Willard; the places where he is most
at home.
We’re Having Lunch—What to Order?
I arrived at his clinic on a gorgeous, crisp afternoon,
just in time for lunch. We were joined for lunch by
his life partner, Alexandra Luppold. Alexandra is a
statuesque German-born woman with a light accent and
a visible strength. It’s immediately obvious that these
two have an easy rapport borne out of respect and
friendship. Together, we walk down the street to a little
Mexican restaurant. I felt a little intimidated to order. I
couldn’t help but wonder what one of the world’s most
accomplished naturopathic doctors might consider
“healthy” when dining out. So, brave soul that I am, I
figured I’d wait to hear his order: fish tacos, hold the
guac. I chuckled with surprise by the normalcy.
After a little while, the two tell me their story of finding
each other. It’s a doozy. As they tell me about months
of correspondence before actually having a first date,
and how they fell in love through the written word and
dreams, I finally put my finger on why I like this man
so much. He’s impish. When he talks to you about
something he’s passionate about—be it his life with Alex
or iridology—his eyes get a certain twinkle, and you can
see that his mind is full of a hundred different mysteries.
Time for a Patient Consultation
We head back to his clinic, where I get a rare
treat. A patient has generously agreed to allow me to
observe their consultation. The man is about my age. He
is a restaurateur, a father of four boys and a very
competitive amateur athlete—especially with his sons.
Like many of Dr. Willard’s patients, he is the third
generation in his family to call Dr. Willard his primary care
physician. The man is complaining of a bulging hernia
obtained from lifting heavy liquor crates in his bar back
(or maybe it was the competitive racquetball with his
oldest son—hard to pinpoint). Dr. Willard chides the man
in a way that only your family doctor can. “It’s time to
slow down. Your spirit can’t keep writing checks that your
body can’t cash. It was bound to catch up to you”, Dr.
Willard concludes.
Dr. Willard does a careful, thorough exam of the man’s
eyes, tongue and feet while he peppers him with an odd
assortment of questions. A short time later, Dr. Willard
reviews his diagnosis and, among the issues the man is
dealing with, Dr. Willard tells him he is cold.
“Cold?” I ask. Isn’t “cold” normal up here? After all,
there’s snow everywhere. Is “cold” a diagnosis? Isn’t it just
a symptom suggesting you need a sweater?
“You know, Dr. Willard, you are right. I’ve been feeling
unusually cold for over a week now—chilled to the bone
at odd times.” While he answers, Dr. Willard pulls out his
prescription pad, but it’s not like any I’ve seen before. I
notice organic Reishi and yarrow as well as a high dose
omega-3 as part of an intense daily regimen to treat the
bulging hernia in the hopes of avoiding surgery.
How did he know that? How did Dr. Willard discover a
symptom that the patient himself did not relay and had
never identified, even for himself? I asked Dr. Willard
those questions.
The answers? Expertise.
After 30 years, many of
which were spent working
with the likes of Dr. John R.
Christopher and
Dr. Bernard Jensen,
Dr. Terry Willard has
developed the type of
understanding of
human physiology
and the ways
we react to our
environment
that few people
will ever achieve.
I assure you, this is
one On the Road visit I’ll
never forget.

With Marley Coffee
RAW Fit™ for Weight Loss
By Rhonda Price
Rohan Marley clearly remembers the day he sipped his first cup
of coffee. He was a grown man at 31 years old and ready to make
his own way in the world, building on a legacy his legendary father
Bob Marley had left behind. But unlike his brothers Damien and
Ziggy, who chose to follow in their father’s footsteps and become
successful reggae artists, Rohan’s dream was to farm the rich
Jamaican land his father had loved so well. Nestled high in the
scenic Blue Mountains, the Marley family’s land was overflowing
with coffee beans, yet Rohan had never given much thought to
what the soil could truly yield. The day he tasted his first cup of
organic coffee, everything changed.
“I was a tea drinker my entire life and never touched coffee,”
recalled Rohan. “One day, I was driving through the mountains on the
way to my farm in Jamaica, and I saw a little shack on the side of the
road where people were selling coffee. I bought a cup and drove to
the top of the mountain.”
It was a few minutes before sunrise as Rohan walked to a spot
where he could watch the sun peeking through the mist as it slowly
rose over the majestic mountains. His father had always told him
this was the best time of the day in Jamaica, and as Rohan took his
first sips of coffee and surveyed the acres of pristine land stretched
out before him, he experienced a serendipitous moment of clarity
that told him what he was meant to do. In a split second, his vision
for Marley Coffee was born and was soon on its way to becoming a
global business enterprise that would touch people and communities
far beyond the tiny island of Jamaica.
Jammin’ Java
A little more than a decade has passed since Rohan sipped his first cup of coffee and
decided to share it with the world. Today, Marley Coffee provides premium-roasted
certified organic coffee to grocery, retail, online and hospitality industries. The company
went public in 2011 and is quoted on the OTCBB stock exchange under the symbol JAMN,
an abbreviation for Jammin’ Java. With its headquarters based in Denver, Colorado,
Marley Coffee has expanded internationally and sources beans from organic coffee
farms throughout the world, including Ethiopia and Central America. The company also
employs hundreds of people and strives to support communities and the environment
through organic, sustainable and ethical
practices. Marley Coffee also helps keep
Bob Marley’s vision of hope and unity
alive through the 1 Love Foundation,
which supports charity projects focused
on global education and sustainable
living based on its three pillars: Youth,
Planet and Peace.
No one is more excited about the
brand’s success than Rohan, who

Scheduling Rohan for a meeting was a bit difficult,
as he is constantly traveling. Although he calls
Jamaica his home, he spends quite a bit of time at
his “satellite” residences in South Florida and New
York as well. In addition to business meetings, trade
shows and checking out coffee farms, he also tries—
whenever he can—to catch his son, Nicolas, playing
football at Tulane University.
When he finally arrived at Garden of Life, the entire
company welcomed him with a special coffee break
that quickly turned into a photo session as everyone
whipped out cell phones to snap photos of him.

was contagious, yet he seemed truly humbled
by the outpouring of attention lavished upon
him. After a quick meeting with our graphics
department to review package designs, we
were sorry to see him go, but knew we’d be
collaborating on more projects in the future.
“I’m thrilled with our relationship with Garden of
Life,” said Rohan. “I love the company’s principles,
the belief system and that everyone is so closeknit. Our companies are closely aligned in a
progressive way, and Garden of Life is helping us
build our brand awareness because they have so
much respect in the natural foods arena.”
Probiotics and Weight Loss?
Probiotics provide numerous health benefits, but now we
may be able to add weight loss to the list.
Probiotics are key to proper digestion and nutrient absorption to keep us
well nourished, but science keeps discovering more and more about the
benefits of probiotics. We now know that probiotics also play a major
role in supporting a healthy immune system—of which up to 80 percent is
housed in your gut—as well as possible roles in healthy metabolism, blood
sugar levels, mood and even weight loss. In fact, many studies point to the
potential probiotics have in weight loss. Here are some highlights:
A study published in the British Journal of Nutrition links probiotics to fat
loss. The study combined a probiotic with fermented milk. Of the 210 overweight
people in Japan who participated in the study, the group consuming the probiotic
for 12 weeks lost approximately eight percent visceral fat—an unhealthy fat building up
around the heart and internal organs—while also losing one to three percent of their
belly fat. During the same period, the placebo group did not experience any significant
fat loss.
A study published in the journal Molecular Systems Biology indicates that probiotics may
affect fat metabolism. In this animal study, two strains were tested, and one of the strains
impacted the way that bile acids emulsify fats in the upper gut. This result points to the
theory that, in humans, probiotic strains may influence the metabolism of bile acid, and as a
result, may impact the amount of fat the body absorbs and retains as excess weight.
In 2006, a precursor study was published in the journal Nature (December 2006), which
noted that the gut microbial populations between those who are obese and those who are
lean are different. It also noted that when heavier people lost weight, their gut flora became
like that of leaner people Researchers then investigated if there is a microbial component
of being overweight, so they transferred gut flora from obese mice to lean mice and the
lean mice gained weight—supporting the idea that gut flora composition can directly
affect weight.
On the heels of this finding, Dr. Touhy from the University of Reading, indicated that
overweight animals have substantially lower Bifidobacteria probiotic levels in their
bodies than leaner animals do.
Adding to this discovery is a study showing that modulation of gut bacteria could
directly affect metabolism and positively influence the body’s glucose balance, which,
of course, plays a role in weight.
Likewise, a study published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative
Medicine suggests that Lactobacillus probiotics may assist in increasing weight loss.
An animal study out of the University of Georgia showed that probiotics may support
a decrease in weight, accompanied by a greater expression of leptin, a key hormone
involved in appetite control, metabolism and weight loss.
Other studies indicate that probiotics serve new moms in their weight management
goals, including one suggesting that probiotics—particularly those with Lactobacillus and
Bifidobacteria strains—given during the first trimester of pregnancy may help women better
manage their weight, especially abdominal obesity, after childbirth.

Q. Why is January one of the most popular
months for people to start a cleanse, and how can
cleansing or “detoxing” help people achieve their
weight loss resolution?
A. We all know detoxification
(or cleansing) is a basic foundation
of good health and natural healing.
According to the U.S. Government
Census Statistics, six of the top 10
New Year’s Resolutions revolve
around personal health goals.
(See http://www.usa.gov/Citizen/
Topics/New-Years-Resolutions.
shtml). But kicking bad habits such
as smoking and excess alcohol
consumption or starting good ones
such as exercising more and weight
management are difficult. It’s
human nature to keep putting these
off because they require sacrifice.
Around the new year, we are tired of complaining
about being tired. We are sick of being sick.
Being too heavy is weighing on us. So, we promise
ourselves that things will change. Unfortunately,
things rarely ever do change without. . .here it
comes. . .sacrifice.
Q. You keep using the word sacrifice. That
sounds painful. Just how hard is it to make the
changes you suggest?
A. We’ve all heard “no pain, no
gain” until the phrase has lost its
meaning. So, I’m going to offer you a
new mantra—“You’re in charge.” Let
me ask you this: who bombards your
body daily with toxins? Who chooses
the fatty foods that clog your arteries?
Who lifts the glass one too many
times? Who sugars up just to come
crashing down? Most importantly, who
is in charge of your body?
There’s an old saying that I love:
“What’s eating you?” Most people
use it to ask each other about what’s
wrong or what’s bothering them. I put
it to you this way: if you do not feel in charge of what
you are putting into your own body, then your diet is
eating you, not you eating your diet. For most of us,
our diet is eating us to death. Don’t you think it’s time
you finally take charge of your health, cleanse your
body and make a fresh start?
Q. Okay. So, why will a detoxification (a.k.a. cleanse)
help? How?
A. There’s a reason why we say, “Out with the
old. . . ” before saying, “. . . and in with the new.”
A good detox program cleanses the body from the
harmful chemicals we’ve accumulated in the intestinal
tract, the urinary tract, the liver, the gallbladder, the
blood and the lymphatic system. Talk about a clean
sweep! Proper detoxification should also include a
wholesome diet focused on alkaline-forming foods as
well as moderate exercise and the consumption of
lots of pure water.
Q. Can all of this cleansing be accomplished by the
diet alone? Do I need supplements?
A. We all know Hippocrates’ famous quote, “Let
food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”
What we don’t know is how to forage for organic,
wild-growing plants and herbs that contain the
best properties to make our “medicinal foods”
most effective. Those arts have been virtually lost
to the proliferation of processing, shipping and
commercialization of the food chain and industry.
During detoxification, the liver, kidneys
and intestinal tract—the primary organs of
detoxification—play major roles. The liver filters
the blood to remove large toxins; it synthesizes
and secretes bile, which is full of cholesterol and
fat-soluble toxins; and it has an enzyme system
that disassembles unwanted chemicals. Some of
the built-up toxins are neutralized and excreted in
the urine and feces. But other toxins are stored in
fat and bone tissues, and these need to be dealt
with as well. Likewise, the skin and lungs participate—
to some degree—in the elimination of toxins.
I believe that a quality detox should contain
organic and wild-crafted herbs and food supplements
that are intelligently chosen to promote cleansing in
the blood, intestinal tract, kidneys, liver and lymphatic
system. These supplements, along with the diet,
encourage the body to release waste materials and
toxins that have accumulated in the body since the
last cleanse. A full-body cleanse supports the body’s
natural systems for the healthy elimination of heavy
metals, chemical toxins, microbial compounds and
for protein metabolism.
Q. Why is the pH level in food so important
during detoxification?
A. All foods can be classified as acid forming,
neutral or alkaline forming. The typical modern
diet is weighted heavily on the acidic side due
to processed grains, conventional meats, sugars
and unhealthy fats, but that leads to the body
becoming more acidic. When the body is more acidic,
it adversely affects our cells, bodily organs and more,
leading to or exacerbating many health concerns.
Our bodies prefer a more alkaline state. To help
achieve that, a good detox program doesn’t allow for
any flour products, dairy products, tropical fruits, dried
fruits, processed foods or preservatives.
Q. Should I eat protein during a detox?
A. You need healthy proteins every day for
energy, metabolism, to support normal brain and
organ function and to lose weight. The key to making
your detoxification experience a success is to keep it as
easy as possible for you to manage your eating. I love
RAW Fit™ for these reasons. It provides a pH-balanced
vegan protein your body requires, and because it is
organic and formulated without added sugars, you
are not reintroducing the harmful toxins that you are
working to eliminate. Also, to help you fill out your
daily detox diet, the Wild Rose Herbal D-Tox kit comes
with a complete meal plan, including all the dietary
suggestions you will need during the 12-day program.
Simply put, it doesn’t get any easier than this.
Q. You referred to the “intelligence” behind a good
detox. Can you elaborate?
A. Over the course of 20 years, I trained with the
pioneers of Naturopathy—renowned herbalist Dr. John
R. Christopher and Dr. Bernard Jensen. During that
time, I developed a deep understanding of the human
bowel and elimination processes. It may not sound
sexy, but you can learn a lot about a person—how their
body is working and where it is not—by becoming an
expert in elimination.
Prior to, and throughout these years, I continued
to catalog edible and medicinal plants, both in their
natural (wild) settings as well as in the lab. I later
took these studies and wrote multiple teaching texts
on the identification and classification of edible and
medicinal plants. Additionally, I’ve written several
teaching texts on the use of these plants to stimulate
and supplement our health. My texts on modern and
advanced herbology, for example, are used worldwide.
My life’s passion has been the mastery of edible and
medicinal plants, their identification and selection,
and, most importantly, their usefulness to promote
our health.
It took me 30 years of clinical use to perfect my
Wild Rose Herbal D-Tox. That’s a lifetime of dedication
to quality and efficacy. The system consists of four
herbal supplements—three delivered in capsules
(for the intestinal tract, liver/gallbladder and blood/
lymphatic system)—and a liquid (for the urinary tract
and lymphatic system). The detox kit is to be taken for
12 days and, once completed, you’ve successfully made
that fresh start—and your body should feel it!
A Life-Changing
Experience
Charissa Gast is a valued
member of the Marketing
Department at Garden of
Life. This is her story about a
journey that would change
her life forever.
Although I had a great deal of time to think about my journey during the
15-hour flight, nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to find in
Kolkata, India. As soon as I stepped off the plane, I knew that my life was going
to drastically change. To tell the truth, while I came prepared physically (thanks
to my Perfect Food® RAW and all of my RAW Probiotics™), there was no way I
could have prepared myself emotionally for this journey.
The pungent smells of curry, the constant honking
of the rickshaws, the vibrant colors that graced the
women’s saris, the melodic sounds of Bengali and the
sheer volume of people never stopped arresting my
senses. Kolkata was like no place on earth I have
ever been.
Alongside three of my good friends, I traded the
comforts of South Florida for the daily heat index of
over 100°F. The reprieve that is often found in air
conditioning was a luxury that no longer existed for
us as we searched out Sari Bari, a local business
located in the heart of the red-light district.
I have supported Sari Bari for years. So, naturally,
when I had the opportunity to work together with them,
I jumped at it. Sari Bari provides safe employment to
women who are trapped in the sex trade and who are
vulnerable to being trafficked. The rescued women
are trained as artisans and create the most beautiful
items: blankets, bags and various accessories that are
sold throughout the world. Sari Bari’s commitment to
giving women fair wages and a safe place to work, the
opportunity to learn and to provide for their families
made me a patron for life.
My friends and I had the opportunity to teach the
women self defense. Teaching self defense not only
enables these women to fight back when they are being
attacked, but it also helps to instill within them the selfconfidence and dignity that was stolen from them in the
sex industry. We also hosted a spa day while we were
there. During this time, we washed the women’s feet
and painted their nails. In the Indian culture, the feet are
considered the dirtiest part of the body. So, being able to
give them pedicures was the highest honor that we could
bestow on the women of Sari Bari, and for some of them,
it was the first time their feet had ever been touched.
For a week and a half, I was able to serve these
women. However, for that same week and a half, the
women of Sari Bari taught me about perseverance
with their tenacious spirits and positive outlooks.
My premonition was correct when I stepped off of the
plane—I would leave India changed.
As special events are sure to fill my life and yours this
year, please keep in mind the women of Sari Bari who are
crafting beautiful items with their hands and making a
beautiful change with their lives.
Their workdays started at 10:00
a.m. and ended at 7:00 p.m. Two
breaks for chai tea and biscuits, and
an hour for lunch, kept us going in
the extreme heat.

HOT INGREDIENT
RAW Organic Peruvian Maca—
the “Root” of Energy, Stamina and Vitality
Packed with nutrition and more, RAW organic Peruvian maca is often described as the
“root” of energy, strength, stamina and vitality—making it a hot ingredient for health.
The maca plant, also called Peruvian ginseng, grows in the Andes
Mountains of Peru and produces leaves and a small root that is
about the size of a radish. Maca is a South American cruciferous
plant—a family of plants that also includes broccoli, Brussels sprouts,
cauliflower, cabbage and turnips. But it’s the maca root that’s been
valued for thousands of years among native Andean populations for
how it supports increased energy levels, strength, stamina and vitality.
Among athletes seeking to build
their muscles and energy levels,
maca has become a popular
alternative to other options, since
maca contains no chemicals that
could cause unhealthy outcomes
for endocrine function.
It’s an unusual root, too, containing 19 essential amino acids, a rich
source of fiber, all free fatty acids as well as many vitamins such as
B2, B6, B12, niacin (B3), vitamin E and vitamin C, and over 27 minerals
such as selenium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc and iron. Maca
also contains unique alkaloids called glucosinolates, which play roles in
maca’s ability to balance hormones.
Maca—it’s the “root” of energy,
strength, stamina and vitality—and
a sizzling hot ingredient for health.
Likewise, maca has nutrients termed macaenes and macamides, which
serve to bolster energy levels and vitality. As an adaptogen, maca
is said to support the body’s ability to support physical and mental
health, while managing stress—and has the ability to work differently,
yet effectively, in both men and women, including supporting
reproductive and sexual health.
Generally speaking, maca supports the adrenal glands, part of the
endocrine system which produce important hormones, ensuring proper
growth and development as well as stress management. Additionally,
maca helps to support the proper function of the adrenal glands’
production of cortisol, known as the stress hormone.
When physical and mental stresses occur, the adrenal glands are
triggered to increase production of cortisol, which, over time, can
be damaging to health. Elevated, unrelenting cortisol levels can also
lead to food cravings and overeating. However, maca’s adaptogenic,
balancing effect on the adrenal glands and hormone production results
in the body having higher energy and stamina levels.
Maca is also noted for:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
muscle building.
hormone balancing.
supporting bone health.
immune system health.
supporting healthy circulation.
thyroid and pituitary health.
boosting strength and physical
performance.
• supporting healthy aging.
• healthy blood.
• helping with mood and
emotional health.
• supporting fertility in both men
and women.
• a healthy memory.
• enhancing mental clarity.
• healthy neural activity in the brain.
• promoting deeper sleep.
• stomach and digestive health.
• promoting normal hair growth.
Why RAW, Organic
Peruvian Maca?
Simply put, RAW is how you want
your Peruvian maca, since “RAW”
ensures that the maca hasn’t been
processed at temperatures past
115º Fahrenheit. By keeping maca
RAW, it retains its valuable enzymes
without which minerals and vitamins
become ineffective. Likewise, the B
vitamins and vitamin C are the first
vitamins to go when plants such as
maca are processed above a certain
temperature.
As far as organic, unless maca is
wearing the USDA Certified Organic
seal, then you’re probably getting
toxins such as pesticides, GMOs
and more. Organic is the assurance
you can count on for pure, healthy
products, including maca.

Mixed Martial Artist
Will Brooks
Wins Bellator Lightweight Title
By Rhonda Price
“I was obsessed with this fight,”
said Brooks, who didn’t buy into
the hype surrounding Sarnavskiy’s
winning streak, last four wins by
submission or his 25-1 record. “I knew
my advantages would be my speed, explosiveness and athleticism.
I think it was tough for Tiger to match me in these areas.”
Brooks is a Garden of Life®-sponsored athlete and one of
several of the company’s mixed martial artists who fight in
Bellator and UFC promotions throughout the world. Competing
in the lightweight division, his imposing, chiseled physique makes
him look much bigger than 155 pounds. However, he’s had plenty of
time to figure out the best ways to add weight, lose weight
and gain muscle mass depending, on the sports he’s competed
in for years.
As a high school football player in Chicago, a knee injury ended
his career and turned his attention to wrestling. Like many wrestlers
who have few places to compete after high school, Brooks found
that mixed martial arts was a logical progression. He made his
professional MMA debut in 2011 and quickly rose through the ranks
with a 7-0 record his first year. His big break came when he was
invited to fight in Japan by the DREAM organization and defeated
highly touted veteran Satoru Kitaoka with a technical knockout.
Immediately after the international upset, he signed with Bellator
Fighting Championships in 2013 and started gunning for the title. By
the time he faced Sarnavskiy in the final, MMA fans could tell he was
a serious threat.
Will Brooks was supposed to be the underdog in a highly
anticipated Bellator title fight recently, but it never looked
that way for a second as he totally dominated Alexander
“Tiger” Sarnavskiy from start to finish. Controlling the
Russian with his impressive grappling and striking
skills, he claimed the lightweight title with a unanimous
decision victory and was presented with a giant
$100,000 check in the Octagon. If anyone
was surprised by the outcome, it wasn’t
Brooks, who for weeks, had envisioned
exactly how he would triumph over
his opponent.
“I was ready for him,” said Brooks, whose
menacing nickname “Ill Will” is meant to spell doom
in advance for opponents. “When I’m in training
camp for a fight, I don’t halfway do anything. I train
twice a day for about six hours and take Sundays off
to recover. I focus on my wrestling skills to stay sharp, but I’ve also
been working closely with my striking coach, Steve Bruno, and I’ve
been able to add that to my game plan as well.”
Brooks says he is grateful to his support team of family, friends
and coaches at American Top Team, as well as to Garden of Life for
helping him with his nutrition needs.
“Nutrition was the last piece of the puzzle for me,” said Brooks.
“I’ve always tried to eat healthy, but was never quite sure about
what supplements I needed to keep me going through tough
training sessions and competitions. Now I’m getting the best protein
with RAW Meal and RAW Fit™, Vitamin Code® RAW whole food
multivitamins, and Wobenzym® N to help with recovery. A teammate
also told me about the importance of green juices and smoothies,
so now I’ve added Perfect Food® RAW to the mix. I’m feeling great,
and have been telling everyone that we need more companies like
Garden of Life that have an understanding of what athletes need and
the hard work we do in order to be successful.”
Now that he’s established himself as a serious challenger for
the lightweight tournament belt next year, Brooks is no longer
considered an underdog. As Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney recently
said “We’ve got another world-class lightweight in Bellator, and his
name’s Will Brooks.”

Guayakí Brand Fair Trade, USDA Organic, Non-GMO Verified Yerba Maté:
Don’t UnderestiMATE How LegitiMATE This UltiMATE
Yerba Maté Is!
From the simple love of a beverage, Guayakí yerba maté drinkers have become a driving force for
conservation and community development by paying a fair trade price for their yerba maté.
The name itself is intriguing—yerba maté, pronounced
yer-bah mah-tay. The word yerba means herb, while
maté refers to the actual drink and the gourd in which it’s
traditionally served.
Hailing from South America, yerba maté is made
from naturally caffeinated and nutritious leaves of the
South American rainforest holly tree. According to the
Guayakí company, a leader in how to create yerba maté
right, yerba maté has the “strength of coffee, the health
benefits of tea and the euphoria of chocolate” all in
one beverage.
More nutritious than green tea, yerba
maté contains:
• vitamins A, C, E, B1, B2, B3, B5 and the rest
of the vitamin B complex.
• calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium, potassium,
selenium, manganese and phosphorus.
• powerful antioxidants, 15 amino acids, fatty acids,
chlorophyll, carotene, polyhenols, flavonols,
tannins, inositol and trace minerals.
• theobromine (what’s in chocolate that provides
euphoria), theophylline (which has many benefits,
including supporting healthy inflammation) and
prudent amounts of caffeine.
Guayakí yerba maté helps maintain a healthy
weight, boosts energy, stimulates focus and clarity
and provides the largest antioxidant and polyphenol
content among tea-based and non-tea-based drinks
compared in a recent study. The study results showed
that it contained up to 100-fold higher amounts of
antioxidants and polyphenols compared to mainstream
non-tea-based drinks, and had the largest antioxidant
and polyphenol content among tea-based drinks.
It’s no wonder Guayakí came in first. They take
painstaking steps to ensure the best yerba maté possible.
Guayakí yerba maté is grown differently.
The truth is that the usual commercial method of
growing yerba maté in South America erodes soils,
reduces productivity over time and includes full, direct
sunlight on plants to speed up their growth, which can
burn the plants’ leaves, making them bitter.
With Guayaki brand yerba maté, however, great care is
taken to ensure that seeds are planted in fertile soil and
shade grown in the rich ecosystem of the rainforest—
shielded from direct sunlight. Guayakí’s process yields
a smaller return, but a much higher-quality product. It’s
also more sustainable and creates habitats for bird and
animal species.
In short, Guayakí yerba maté is grown, harvested and
dried traditionally—using a “whole plant—whole energy”
approach. Guayakí hand picks only the leaves and
tender stems of the plants and puts them through a flash
heating process to preserve nutritional and antioxidant
properties. Then it’s dried at low temps, and aged for
one year in cedar chambers, culminating into its smooth,
rich flavor.
The result is Guayakí brand yerba maté—what we think
is the best yerba maté on the planet and for the planet.
Meet the Guayaki Guys
Picture it: two university buddies with a passion for
drinking yerba maté, a vision for sharing the yerba maté
plant with the world—knowing that people everywhere
needed a nourishing source of energy along with a
healthy dose of optimism.
That’s where Alex Pryor from Buenos Aires and David
Karr from Northern California found themselves in 1996—
and is also what led to the creation of Guayaki brand
yerba maté based in California.
As with anything that is excellent and purposeful, it wasn’t
long before Alex and David were joined by three other
pioneering men to comprise the original found “seed group”
that makes up Guayaki. Those three were: don Miguel (also
known as “The Journeyman”), Steven Karraka (also known as
the “Shape Shifter”) and Christopher Mannaka (also known
as “The Chairman of the Gourd”). The five ambitious friends,
fueled by their activist mentalities, created a new kind of
restorative business model that called consumers to action by
voting with their dollars. Hence, the birth of the Guayaki brand.
Guayaki Yerba Maté is Born
True to themselves and to their passion and mission, the
Guayaki guys were committed to a holistic lifestyle and
business practice which aligned philosophically with their
love for nature, adventure and spirit.
So, they took to the road—extending to the four corners
of the United States—and shared their story and the yerba
maté with all who would listen and taste. Unsurprisingly, their
passion-fueled business blossomed.
Growing up, the guys had always heard that “money doesn’t
grow on trees.” However, for the people of the rainforest who
grow and tend to the Guayaki yerba maté, that’s not true.
The Guayaki guys are quick to point out that their business
provides the people of the rainforest with incomes and the
ability to steward their land.
More specifically, their innovative business model directly
links purchases to their partner farming communities in the
South American Atlantic Rainforests. Their partners sustainably
harvest organic yerba maté from rainforest-grown cultivation
and reforestation projects, which generates a renewable
income stream, enabling these communities to restore their
lives and to restore their lands.
Guayaki is also intricately involved with their farmers and
encourage cultivation under native rainforest trees, promoting
the preservation of forests. Farmers partnering with the
Guayaki guys are provided technical advice on creating
nurseries, the management of the organic growing process
from cultivation through harvest, and then Guayaki buys what
is produced.
In short, through their brand building, the Guayaki guys
drive reforestation, which supports local communities and
their culture.
What could be better? When you and I consume Guayaki
brand yerba maté, not only are we getting a deliciously
energizing organic beverage, but we’re also helping people and
making a difference in our earth’s precious natural resources.

Non-GMO Legislation Proposals in the U.S.:
CAN David BEAT
Goliath?
In 2013, 95 bills associated with the labeling of GMO foods were introduced in 28 U.S.
states. Stay tuned to see if David—the states for GMO labeling—can beat Goliath—the
food giants, including Monsanto, who try to block them.
You might think that with the narrow defeats of Prop 37 in California
in 2012 and I-522 in Washington state in 2013 that David is losing
ground against Goliath. This fight for GMO labeling is far from
over, however, and more and more “David” states are continuing
advancements against the “Goliath” food giants. (Note: These are
frequently changing, so stay tuned.)
Alaska: HJR-5, which opposes GE salmon passed the House and Senate
and is waiting to be signed into law.
Arizona: SB 1180 considers food “misbranded” if entirely or partially GE.
It didn’t get co-sponsored, so wasn’t viable for 2013 legislative session.
Colorado: HB 1192 would have mandated food with more than one percent
GE material to be labeled, but was indefinitely postponed.
Connecticut: HB 6527 requires infant formula and baby food sold in
Connecticut to be labeled if it contains GE materials. It was signed into
law, making Connecticut the first state to have a law requiring GMO
labeling. For this to take effect, four states (including one state bordering
Connecticut) must pass a similar bill, and a combination of northeastern
states with a combined population of at least 20 million people must
approve similar legislation.
Florida: HB1233 set out to have required GE food labeling, but failed.

What is “CLEAN” for SPORT?
Informed-Choice and Informed-Sport certification sets the worldwide
standard for CLEAN when it comes to sport supplementation.
For over 50 years, the lab behind Informed-Choice certification has been the worldwide expert in anti-doping and
has published over 300 scientific papers on methods for detection of trace levels of substances that are prohibited in
sport. The Informed-Choice lab, working with other worldwide testing experts and world governments participating
in Olympic sports, in partnerships with world sport associations of all types—from tennis to swimming to soccer and
beyond—joined forces in 1999 to create The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). From high school team sports to
high profile Olympic championships, WADA sets the world’s standards for banned substances, and ensures a level
playing field by certifying that players and products are CLEAN.
In 2007, after almost a decade of working with WADA, the Informed-Sport & Informed-Choice quality assurance
program was born. The certifications were created with one goal in mind—to provide anyone concerned with CLEAN
sport supplementation the assurance that their products were CLEAN and free of any prohibited substances,
whether they appear on the WADA list or on other lists from individual sport associations such as the NFL, NCAA,
MLB, NBA and NHL.
Here are some quick stats and interesting facts:
• Informed-Sport/Informed-Choice Certification programs are the only globally recognized certifications
accepted in North America, Europe, South Africa and Australia. (All others are recognized only in
North America.)
• The Informed-Choice certification means a product is free of over 1,500 banned substances.
• Informed-Choice labs are the largest commercial laboratories testing supplements for banned substances
in the world, testing over 40,000 samples and processing more than 7,000 samples per year.
• Almost 200 companies rely on Informed-Choice to test their products and manufacturing facilities.
Horse and Human Physiology
Amazing, but true—when it comes to athletics, kinetics and even
the health of tendons, ligaments and musculature—horses and
humans are extremely similar. The Informed-Choice program began
in Lexington, Kentucky, where the lab remains to this day. The
Informed-Choice labs are the recognized leaders in Animal Sport
drug surveillance, and currently perform exclusive equine testing
for the states of Kentucky, Maine, Virginia and Puerto Rico.
Garden of Life® is proud to announce
that RAW Fit™, RAW Meal and RAW Protein have all
received this coveted certification from Informed-Choice.
what’s
Here’s a rundown of some of the hottest health and fitness
trends to hit the planet—or at least found at a location near you!
>Mud Runs
>Bodyweight Training
Are you a mudder? If not, you may just want to give
it a try. Probably one of the hottest activities around
right now, mud runs are very challenging, fun and
dirty! Most mud runs are basically obstacle courses
designed to test your strength, stamina and how you
make decisions under extreme conditions—such as
being covered in mud. Climbing, crawling,
pulling, jumping and running your way
to the finish line, most mud runs
are team activities and
promote great camaraderie.
Word to the wise—this is
not for those who have not
been involved in some type of
physical activity as of late. There
are classes to help you train for a
mud run, and it’s recommended you
attempt those first—then sign up for
your first run. Then you can answer,
“Yes—I’m a mudder!”
It’s all about getting back to basics. Push ups, sit ups,
pull ups, thrust squats and walking lunges—the list is
endless. But today, these— and many other time-tested
moves—are being put together in grueling workouts to
push your body to the max. The beauty is that there’s
no equipment necessary, and it can be done just about
anywhere. If you enjoy challenging yourself in a group
environment, various classes are available from training
facilities across the nation. If that doesn’t suit your
style, or you want to take your workout with you, just
search online for some great DVDs or online workouts.
>HIIT
High Intensity
Interval Training
(HIIT) essentially
means a workout that
incorporates periods of
intense movements with
periods of less-intense activity. Now,
for those who are already training and are
looking to push themselves
further, programs such as P90X® and
CrossFit are prime examples of HIIT
workouts. But other forms of HIIT
workouts are offered at many
training facilities that take less time
and are easier on the joints. From
fat-burning to upper-body to
lower-body type HIIT workouts,
do your homework, and you’re
sure to find a class near you,
or you can check out some
online videos to get
you started.
>Dance Exercise Workouts
Since its introduction in 2001, Zumba® classes have
become a staple at most gyms—and rightfully so. But
today, other types of dance exercise classes
are popping up everywhere and gaining
huge popularity. From combinations
of Hip Hop and Funk so you can
get your twerk on to Bollywood
that combines fast-paced
Indian dance moves with Hip
Hop gyrations, these
workouts promise to
get your heart pumping
and your fat-burning furnace
stoked. And talk about extremes—
there are also Barre workouts
using the ballet bar to perform
various challenging isometric
moves, or pole dance workouts
that combine dance and
gymnastics to leave your
body feeling tight and
lean. So, do a little
research in your area
to see what types of
dance exercise classes
are offered. You may
just get out of that
cardio rut and have fun
doing it!
>USDA Certified
Organic Food
>There’s an
App for That
It’s no wonder that buying
USDA Certified Organic is still on
the upswing. People today want
healthy, nutritious produce, meats
and other products that are not
grown or bred using genetically modified organisms
(GMOs), synthetic pesticides or herbicides, antibiotics
or hormones. Eating only Certified Organic and
Non-GMO products has been a top trend for several
years now and continues to be on the growing side of
movements across the nation. Look for this to continue
in years to come.
Want to track your
calories? There’s an app for that.
Want to decipher your food labels?
There’s an app for that. Want to
check for GMOs? There’s an app
for that. Technology—and our need
to use it— continues to be a top
trendsetter in both health and
fitness. We want information at
our fingertips, and with today’s
digital offerings, that’s
exactly what we have—
and the possibilities
are endless. The more
we demand, the more
technology will deliver.
This trend isn’t going
anywhere. More aptly stated:
it’s not a trend; it’s a way of life.
>Non-GMO Project
Verified Anything
NON

You can’t turn on the news
Project
or sign on to your computer
VER I FI E D
today without seeing something no ngmoproject.org
about GMOs and the mounting
campaign to eliminate them. Apparently, that trend is
here to stay and will continue to grow. However, just
stating that a product or food item is non-GMO isn’t
cutting it anymore. The real movement is toward strict
third-party verification from the Non-GMO Project.
The Non-GMO Project is a non-profit organization
that helps preserve a non-GMO food supply and
gives consumers an informed choice—it’s North
America’s only third-party verification. Their extensive
verification process assures that a product has
been produced according to consensus-based best
practices for GMO avoidance.
>Juice Bars
You may be thinking that they’ve been around for
years—went mainstream in the 1990s—and you’d be
right. But today, they continue to gain popularity and
are popping up on every street corner, in fitness
centers and in health food stores across the U.S. It’s
even been said they will soon be as popular as coffee
chains. People recognize the health benefits of raw
fruits and vegetables, and juicing provides an easy
way to get them combined in one drink. It appears
this trend is here to stay.

Here’s a recap on how Garden of
Life has been involved with SOS
Children’s Villages—Florida.
The inaugural “Steps for SOS” was
held at a local park, and over 260
walkers participated. The event raised
over $15,000. All funds will go to help
SOS fulfill its promise of healing, hope
and home to the 75 foster children
growing up in the Village in Coconut
Creek, Florida, and the 70 or so
alumni they continue to help in South
Florida. Our team members had a great
time and loved being able to support
our global charity so close to home.
“This event combined fitness with
charity. It doesn’t get much cooler,”
said Amanda Rosa, Product Specialist
and Garden of Life team captain for
the event.
Another event that employees rallied
behind was the SOS Florida Holiday
Toy Drive. “Employees get so excited
to contribute to our holiday toy
drive. They take pride in the fact they
are helping bring a smile to a child,
especially around the holidays,” said
Teresa Miller, Senior Director, Human
Resources & Wellness.
foster care neighborhood in Coconut Creek. The tree-lined
street has 12 houses, which are home to up to 75 boys and
girls. The promise of “Healing, Hope and Home for Every
Child” assures every child growing up in the Village a safe
and secure home, a nurturing family, a vibrant childhood
and an array of services to help them overcome their past
traumas and build a successful future.
Additionally, the Garden of Life team was busy this past quarter
raising funds for the international SOS Children’s Villages initiative.
A silent auction was held over the course of two days at the corporate
office. Employees vied for hot items such as a Chanel gift basket,
original prints by one of our in-house graphic artists, yoga sessions
and specialty food items. Sales reps were calling and emailing their
bids to get in on the action. “I love the fact that Garden of Life is so
actively involved with our charities,” stated Brian Upton, Director
of National Retail Sales. “Our Work Life Committee creates some
awesome events that allow our employees to give back to the
community—a killer combo.”
At Garden of Life, we truly believe in
making a difference in others’ lives,
which is why, for us, working alongside
the SOS Children’s Villages initiatives
puts the fun in fundraising.
