Circulaire rétrospective
The 20th International meeting of collectors of zoo literature and memorabilia was held on 28th, 29th and 30th August
2009 at the Mulhouse Zoo (France) and Basel Zoo (Switzerland). It was a real success with no fewer than 92
participants from seven European countries (see participants list attached)! The festivities began Friday evening with
an icebreaker in L’Auberge du Zoo de Mulhouse. Under a glorious sun, the exchange fair took place on Saturday
morning and many successful exchanges were done between the participants. Dr. Pierre Moisson, director of the
Zoological and Botanical Park of Mulhouse, guided the participants through the park throughout the afternoon. The
many explanations, in English and in French, about the history and the projects of the Zoo of Mulhouse, the breeding
successes, the involvement in ex and in situ conservation, have thrilled everyone present. The day continued with a
dinner in the heart of the zoo and an auction of zoological papers, led by Dr. Klaus Schüling. Ken Kawata, former
curator of the Staten Island Zoo (USA), Dr. Pierre Moisson and many participants have made some interesting
donations. The 94 lots were bought by 29 different participants and an amount of 1053 € was finally collected during
the auction. The benefits have been fully donated to the AEECL (Lemur Conservation Association,
http://www.aeecl.org) which works in Madagascar for protecting the lemurs. The participants met again on Sunday at
Basel Zoo in Switzerland, where a guided tour, in English and in German, was offered. A discovery behind the scenes
of the vivarium and the Etoscha-Haus was once again an opportunity to learn more about the work carried out in
Basel.
A T-shirt stamped Zoohistorica 2009 with a drawing by Frank Pé, who was also the creator of the stunning graphic
charter of this year meeting, was produced for the 20th Zoohistorica. This is a limited edition with very few copies, but
some T-shirts are still available! If you have not had the opportunity to purchase yours at the meeting in Mulhouse, or

costs for free).
Many photographs were taken throughout the weekend by various participants. The possibility of creating a gallery of
pictures on http://www.zoohistorica.org was also discussed. All comments on this subject are welcome! If you do not

Zoohistorica 2010 will be hosted in Zoo Landau in der Pfalz in southern Germany and organized by Michael Amend.
Zoo Leipzig (Germany) and Bristol Zoo (United Kingdom) have also been raised for 2011 and 2012. It is nevertheless
important to remember that the 2012 Summer Olympics Games will be held in London, probably making it difficult
and costly to organize Zoohistorica in Bristol in 2012, as originally proposed. Discussions are open!
To conclude, I would still congratulate all of you for your active and friendly participation and thank again the teams
of Mulhouse Zoo and Basel Zoo for their wonderful support.
Das 20. internationale Treffen der Sammler von allem rund um die Tiergärtnerei wurde vom 28. bis 30. August 2009
im Parc Zoologique et Botanique de Mulhouse (Elsass) und Zoo Basel durchgeführt. Die Veranstaltung war ein
echter Erfolg mit nicht weniger als 92 Teilnehmern aus sieben europäischen Ländern (siehe beigefügte Liste)! Das
Meeting begann mit einem gemütlichen Abend am Freitag im Restaurant des Zoo Mulhouse. Die Tausch- und
Verkaufsbörse am folgenden Samstagmorgen fand dann bei strahlendem Sonnenschein statt. Diesmal unter freiem
Himmel hatten die Teilnehmer die Chance, ihre Sammlungen durch das eine oder andere Schnäppchen oder aber lang
ersehnte Käufe zu ergänzen. Nach der Mittagspause führte Dr. Pierre Moisson, Direktor des Zoo Mulhouse, die
Teilnehmer durch den Park. Er nahm sich den ganzen Nachmittag Zeit, alle Fragen der Gruppen zu beantworten, und
erläuterte darüber hinaus die Historie und die zukünftigen Projekte des Zoos in sowohl englischer als auch
französischer Sprache. Der schöne Tag wurde fortgesetzt mit einem gemeinsamen Abendessen im Zoorestaurant und
schließlich, nach dem Höhepunkt des Abends - der alljährlichen Versteigerung -, gegen 23:00 Uhr beendet. Der
Erfolg der Auktion wurde ermöglicht durch Spenden von Ken Kawata (Inspektor i. R. am Staten Island Zoo, New
York), Dr. Pierre Moisson und vielen Teilnehmern unseres Treffens. Ein Betrag von 1053 € wurde schließlich
gesammelt. Der Erlös der Auktion wurde als Spende an den Makischutzverein AEECL (http://www.aeecl.org)
überreicht. Am Sonntag trafen sich die meisten Teilnehmer im nahe gelegenen Zoo Basel. Während mehrsprachiger
Führungen wurden interessante Einblicke in die Arbeit des Zoo Basel ermöglicht. Blicke hinter die Kulissen im
Etoscha-Haus und dem Vivarium wurden von den Zoosammlern gerne angenommen.
Ein T-Shirt versehen mit dem Aufdruck „Zoohistorica 2009“ und einer Zeichnung von Frank Pé (dem künstlerischen
Gestalter der diesjährigen Tagung) wurde für die 20. Zoohistorica gedruckt. Dieses T-Shirt wurde produziert in einer
sehr limitierten Auflage. Einige der Shirts sind jedoch noch verfügbar! Sollten Sie während des Zoosammlertreffens
die Gelegenheit verpasst haben, ein T-Shirt zu erwerben, so schreiben Sie mir bitte unter

Während des gesamten Wochenendes wurden von den Beteiligten viele Fotos gemacht. Die Möglichkeit der Schaffung
einer Galerie von Bildern auf http://www.zoohistorica.org wurde ebenfalls diskutiert. Alle Kommentare zu diesem
Thema sind willkommen! Wenn Sie vermeiden möchten, auf den veröffentlichten Fotos zu erscheinen oder wenn Sie

Die Zoohistorica 2010 wird von Michael Amend im Zoo Landau in der Pfalz in Südwestdeutschland organisiert. Der
Zoo Leipzig und Bristol Zoo in Südwestengland wurden für 2011 bzw. 2012 als Veranstaltungsorte vorgeschlagen. Es
sollte aber bedacht werden, dass die Olympischen Sommerspiele 2012 in London stattfinden. Es wird evtl. schwierig
und kostspielig sein, die Zoohistorica ausgerechnet in dem späten Sommer in England zu organisieren. Darüber gibt
es also doch noch Diskussionsbedarf.
Abschließend möchte ich Ihnen allen, wie auch und besonders den Teams der Zoos Mulhouse und Basel, für die
großartige und freundliche Mitarbeit und Unterstützung danken.
La 20e Rencontre internationale des collectionneurs de documents zoologiques a eu lieu les 28, 29 et 30 août 2009 au
Parc Zoologique et Botanique de Mulhouse (France) et au Zoo Basel (Suisse). Ce fut un réel succès avec pas moins de
92 participants de sept pays européens (voir liste jointe) ! Les festivités ont débuté le vendredi soir avec une soirée
d'accueil et de retrouvailles à L’Auberge du Zoo de Mulhouse. Sous un soleil radieux, la bourse d’échanges s’est
déroulée le samedi matin et a permis de très nombreux échanges entre les participants. Dr Pierre Moisson, directeur du
Parc Zoologique et Botanique de Mulhouse, a ensuite guidé les participants à travers le parc tout au long de l’aprèsmidi. Ses nombreuses explications, en anglais et en français, à propos de l’histoire et des projets du Zoo de Mulhouse,
des succès de reproduction, de l’implication dans la conservation ex et in situ, ont enthousiasmé toutes les personnes
présentes. La journée s’est poursuivie par un repas au cœur du zoo et une vente aux enchères de documents
zoologiques, animée par Dr Klaus Schüling. Ken Kawata, ancien curateur du Staten Island Zoo (États-Unis), Dr Pierre
Moisson et de nombreux participants ont effectué d’intéressants dons de lot qui ont permis de collecter 1053 €. Les 94
lots mis en vente ont été achetés par 29 participants différents. Les bénéfices ont été intégralement reversés à
l’AEECL (Association de Conservation des Lémuriens, http://www.aeecl.org) qui œuvre à Madagascar pour la
protection des lémuriens. La journée du dimanche a permis de se retrouver au Zoo de Bâle en Suisse où une visite
guidée, en anglais et en allemand, a été offerte aux participants présents. Une découverte des coulisses du vivarium et
de l’Etoscha-Haus a, encore une fois, été l’opportunité d’en apprendre davantage sur les travaux effectués à Bâle.
Un T-shirt estampillé Zoohistorica 2009 et présentant un dessin de Frank Pé, qui a d’ailleurs été à l’origine de la
superbe charte graphique de la rencontre de cette année, a été produit pour le 20e Zoohistorica. Il s’agit d’une édition
limitée à très peu d’exemplaires, mais quelques T-shirts sont encore disponibles ! Si vous n’avez pas eu l’occasion
d’acheter le vôtre lors du meeting à Mulhouse ou si vous souhaitez vous en procurer un autre, n’hésitez pas à me

De nombreuses photographies ont été prises tout au long du week-end par divers participants. Il a également été
discuté la possibilité de créer une galerie de photographies sur http://www.zoohistorica.org. Tous vos commentaires à

Zoohistorica 2010 sera organisé par Michael Amend au Zoo Landau in der Pfalz, dans le sud de l’Allemagne. Le Zoo
Leipzig (Allemagne) et le Bristol Zoo (Royaume-Uni) ont également été évoqués pour 2011 et 2012. Il est néanmoins
important de se rappeler que les Jeux olympiques d’été de 2012 auront lieu à Londres, rendant probablement difficile
et coûteux l’organisation de Zoohistorica à Bristol en 2012, comme initialement proposé. Les discussions sont
ouvertes !
