Welcome note Conference Chair
Dear colleagues,
dear valued guests and friends,
With great pleasure we welcome you to the SICOT International Orthopaedics Conference 2016 in Würzburg, which takes place at Marienberg Fortress Conference Center.
The main topic of the conference is “Specialised Knee Surgery”, which includes among
others biomechanics, the painful knee, fractures, knee dislocation, infection, stem cells,
patient specific therapies and periprosthetic fractures, inter alia.
Integrated into the conference is the SICOT Trainees Meeting, which offers young scientists, registrars and trainees from all over the world a unique opportunity to attend
top class instructional courses and lectures and to present their work in front of an
international audience with orthopaedic experts and leaders in the field.
In the light of the 100th anniversary of the “Orthopaedic Hospital Koenig-Ludwig-Haus”,
which is also the chair of orthopaedics at the University of Würzburg, I am honoured to
welcome numerous leaders of the world orthopaedic community to the SICOT International Orthopaedics 2016. Apart from the conference you will have the opportunity
to visit the historic city of Würzburg where Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered the
X-rays in 1895.
We are looking forward to exciting debates in the field of knee surgery and to an intensive and fruitful exchange of experiences.
Prof. Dr. med. Maximilian Rudert

Welcome Note of the President of the German Society
for Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery
Dear colleagues and friends,
On behalf of the German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma (DGOU) and the German
Society for Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery (DGOOC) it is my pleasure to welcome
you to the SICOT International Congress “Specialised Knee Surgery” in Würzburg. Our
orthopaedic society, the DGOOC, has a long-standing tradition in knee surgery as well as
orthopaedic surgery in general. Its roots date back to 1901 when it was founded by a small
group of surgeons including Albert Hoffa who worked and lived in Würzburg for many years.
Without any doubt, Würzburg can be called the cradle of modern German Orthopaedics
as the very first orthopaedic hospital in Germany was founded on Würzburg soil in 1816,
named the “Karolinen-Institut”. Run by Johann Georg Heine, the aim of this institution
first was to manufacture artificial limbs and tools for the treatment of congenital and
posttraumatic deformities. Later on, surgery was added to the therapeutic portfolio and
surgical innovations such as the first osteotome were developed here. Due to the increasing number of handicapped persons during World War I, a new modern hospital had
to be built, named the “König-Ludwig-Haus”. This year, this hospital celebrates its 100th
anniversary. Under the leadership of famous German orthopaedic surgeons, it gained
nationwide reputation and nowadays one of the biggest university chairs for Orthopaedics
in Germany is seated here.
To celebrate this anniversary, my dear colleague Maximilian Rudert and his team in cooperation with SICOT have organised an outstanding international congress welcoming many
leaders in their field who are going to present cutting-edge research results and discuss the
latest developments in knee surgery. I also want to welcome young orthopaedic surgeons
from all over the world to join us at the 23rd SICOT Trainees meeting.
I wish you pleasant and informative days and exciting debates about the present and
future trends in knee surgery.
Prof. Dr. med. Heiko Reichel
President DGOU/DGOOC 2016

Welcome note Dirk Nowitzki
Dear guests,
I have the pleasure of welcoming you to the SICOT International Orthopaedics Conference 2016 in my beautiful
hometown, Würzburg.
Würzburg is home for me. It was the starting point of my basketball career. I am very
thankful that I have been able to stay healthy throughout the 20 years of my NBA life.
The daily demands on an NBA body with 82 games in a regular season and additional
playoff games are intense. It is extremly important to take care of yourself and devote
time to injury prevention activities. I focus on a good diet, stretching and Yoga, osteopathic treatment and specialised strength exercises.
Würzburg is also home to my foundation: the Dirk Nowitzki Stiftung. We focus on helping children discover their potential through sports. I was very fortunate to experience
a happy and protected childhood. Sadly, childhood looks different for many kids.
These kids need our support to get a chance in life.
They need our help to believe in themselves.
They need our backing to raise their voices.
To support these children in need, we fund projects that value the potential of every
child and help them overcome difficulties. Sports is a fantastic way to build relationships
and find creative ways to conquer new challenges with others.
We also focus on advocating childrens’ rights. We all benefit from the unique perspective, the intuitive knowledge and the joy that children bring to our society. We just need
to provide the framework and listen.
During the next few days at the SICOT International Orthopaedics Conference, Würzburg will be home to you. I hope you enjoy your time here with stimulating discussions,
interesting people and a good glass of Franconian wine.
With best wishes,
Dirk Nowitzki

Mozartfest Würzburg: How a coffee break turned into a feast for the senses
Mozartfest Würzburg – the very name evokes images and sounds: Mozart’s melodies,
over 200 years old and still the most often played pieces of classical music, and Würzburg,
the city on the river Main surrounded by picturesque vineyards and shaped by the reign
of the prince-bishops.
Until today the unique union of the arts is what makes the Mozartfest so alluring: The fact
that the incredible architectural skill of Balthasar Neumann, the frescos of Giovanni Batista
Tiepolo and the stucco-work of Antonio Bossi provide a fascinating atmosphere for topquality musical performances is acknowledged by up to 25,000 national and international
guests who attend the Mozartfest every year and enjoy the symphony concerts in the
Imperial Hall with first-class artists and orchestras as well as the Serenades at the Court
Gardens, cross-over concerts in a former printing hall, evenings with music and literature
in wine cellars or contemplative concerts at the former convent of Himmelspforten.
In 2016 the festival will last from June 3 until July 3 and world-renowned artists,
celebrated orchestras, and exquisite chamber music ensembles will illuminate the Imperial Hall with their music and make the Mozartfest one of the highlights among the
international classical music festivals.
