JOURNEY OF HOPE

Synopsis
This is the story of a Turkish couple, Haydar and Meryem, who start their “Journey of Hope” from a small village in the mountains of South-‐East Turkey in September 1988. They are taking their 7 year-‐old son Mehmet Ali, who is the brightest of their eight children. It is a journey which is meant to take them from their poor country into rich Switzerland. The family has sold their house and their farm in order to finance the journey into what is supposed to be Paradise. The fist stop on the long journey is Izmir, where they stowaway on a freighter to Genoa. Once in Italy, they are taken by smugglers to the Splügenpass and sent on towards Switzerland, despite the snow and the cold. This illegal immigraPon has a tragic end: the Turkish boy dies of exhausPon and cold, in his father’s arms.

Comments by Xavier Koller in July 2016 on the topicality My film „Journey of Hope“ could not be more topical. The number of refugees who dreamt of a safe future in Europe was sPll manageable in the 80ies -‐ but the influx has now risen dramaPcally. Twenty-‐five years ago, empathy and pity sPll warmed the hearts of many people. Meanwhile, however, the poliPcal winds have changed to animosity.
Two decades ago poliPcians and the media argued with numbers and staPsPcs. There was seldom talk about the individual lives of the newcomers. The focus concentrated on the large numbers of refugees. These numbers have increased dramaPcally now and individual life stories find even less interest than in the past. Only when the picture of the dead liWle Syrian boy who was washed ashore circulated around the world, we remembered for a short moment that there were people in despair underway, people who risk their own and the lives of their loved-‐ones hoping to find shelter in a promised land.
I was moved by a similar incident in the late 80ies which lead to „Journey of Hope“. It was not a photo but a short arPcle in the paper which touched me and which I could not get out of my mind: An unexpected early winter break-‐in struck a group of Turkish and Kurdish refugees at the „Splügenpass“ on October 13, 1988 and a young Kurdish boy lost his life. Thus the problem took on a human face
and moPvated me to confront the staPsPcs with a real human fate. The people smugglers of that Pme were as unscrupulous as their successors: They took the refugees` money, lead them to the mountain, and, abandoned to their fate, they had to find their way across the „Green Boarder“ into Switzerland.
5
At that Pme, people smugglers were sPll small organisaPons. Nowadays they are unscrupulous corporaPons comparable to the drug cartels, and they earn millions with their trade. I cannot understand why nobody can put a halt to that game. Naturally, the poliPcal situaPon in the emigrants` countries has also changed dramaPcally, and the refugees are literally driven onto the boats of the smugglers. In the past, pipelines transported raw materials from Africa and the Middle East to Western Europe. Nowadays the pipelines seem to `suck in` people in their thousands -‐ but there is no market for them.
You do not make a film to win an Oscar. You make a film
when a topic urges you to deal with it. „Journey of Hope“ is the result of such urge. In 1988, when I read the arPcle about the young Kurdish boy I felt against all odds that I had to make this film. 6
