A l’occasion de sa visite au Luxembourg vendredi, le commissaire européen Michel Barnier a rappelé qu’il restait du chemin à parcourir pour assainir la finance, malgré le travail déjà accompli depuis le début de la crise.
«Nous voulons remettre les marchés financiers au service de l’économie et non le contraire», a-t-il répété lors d’une rencontre avec la
presse luxembourgeoise en fin de journée.

Die privaten Schulden der Banken sind in den öffentlichen Raum übertragen worden und haben sich in Schulden der Staaten verwandelt. Das sagte EZB-Ratsmitglied Yves Mersch.
„Le tout Luxembourg“ hatte sich am Montagabend im Gebäude Jean Monnet der EU-Kommission auf dem Kirchberg eingefunden,
um dem luxemburgischen Zentralbankchef Yves Mersch zu lauschen. Mersch philosophierte zur Finanzkrise und formulierte Forderungen zur Lösung der Schuldenkrise. Die Regierungen in Europa müssen ein größeres Engagement und mehr Ambitionen bei der
Konsolidierung ihrer nationalen Haushalte zeigen, fordert der Notenbank-Gouverneur Luxemburgs. Striktere Regeln und Minimal-Anforderungen an die Kapitalausstattung werden nach Ansicht des Mitgliedes des Rates der Europäischen Zentralbank das System der
Finanz-Industrie stärker und auch gesünder erscheinen lassen.

During a recent meeting, Luxembourg’s governing council adopted the bill providing for the approval of bilateral tax agreements
with Barbados and Panama, as well as for the approval of amendments to multiple existing bilateral tax treaties. The agreements and
amendments provide for information exchange upon request.

Prior to this week’s financial mission to the Middle East, organised by Luxembourg for Finance, HRH Crown Prince Guillaume of
Luxembourg and HE Luc Frieden, Minister of Finance, visited the emirate Qatar on Sunday, 6 February. This visit was the opening act
of a week long road show to Abu Dhabi, Riyadh and Beirut. At each stop, a delegation of financial sector professionals from Luxembourg will present business opportunities in the Luxembourg financial centre.

Edmond Israel, Luxemburger Banker, ist im Alter von 86 verstorben. In seiner langen Laufbahn als Banker schaffte er bis an die Spitze
einer der größten Finanzeinrichtungen des Landes. Während langen Jahren war er Präsident des Verwaltungsrats der Luxemburger
Börse.
Den Namen Edmond Israel trägt auch eine Stiftung, die 1990 von Clearstream zu Ehren Israels gegründet worden war. Edmond Israel
war einer der Mitbegründer und langjähriger Vorstandsvorsitzender der Cedel, der Vorläuferin der Clearing-Gesellschaft Clearstream.
Die Stiftung verleiht einen “Vision for Europe Award” an herausragende Persönlichkeiten für deren Einsatz beim Aufbau eines geeinten und friedlichen Europas.

Canadian politicians and bankers are increasingly raising doubts about the benefits to their country of the proposed marriage
between the London Stock Exchange and TMX Group, owner of the Toronto and Montreal exchanges.
