The German Shipbuilding and Ocean
Industries Association looks to the future
with optimism: Equipped with state-ofthe-art capabilities to build almost any
type of ship, floating unit or marine technology component, the association’s
more than 120 member companies in the
shipbuilding and marine equipment sectors are exceptionally well-prepared to
face the challenges of the future.

spending about 10% of their turnover

this German special competence can be
found in the German Navy as well as in
other leading navies in the world.
Another important demand segment
is the German Navy’s Frigate F125 procurement programme. A contract for
four new frigates to be delivered by 2019
has been awarded to the consortium
ARGE F125. These 7,000 ton frigates are
designed for stabilisation operations
within the scope of multi-national operations and defence measures against
asymmetric threats. The new frigate
type enables extremely short response
times against asymmetric threats. The
F125 is equipped with a new electrical
propulsion system (CODLAG - Combined

be deployed world-wide for up to two
years. It can operate for up to 5,000
hours per year even under tropical conditions. Compared to previous vessels,
the regular crew on the Frigate 125 has
been reduced by 50% (comprising no
more than 105–120 persons).
A new ship type of increasing significance
is the corvette. Unlike frigates, corvettes,
with a displacement of 1,000 to about
2,500 tons, are designed for littoral sea
operation. In its recent corvette procurement programme, the German Navy opted
for the ARGE K130 working group. The five
units (1,840 tons) have boosted the German Navy’s capabilities significantly.

as FPSOs.
However, in this segment German companies primarily focus on manufacturing
modules, components and equipment
for installation on offshore structures,
as well as building offshore installation
vessels, anchor handling tugs and offshore supply vessels in support of the
search for, and recovery of oil and gas.

Renewable Energy
In this maritime technology segment
German efforts are mainly focussed on
offshore wind energy. Numerous permits for offshore wind farms have been
granted, several platforms and plants
are under construction and the first
ones are operating successfully. Wind
turbines with a rated power of up to 5
MW have been or will be erected in the
North and Baltic Seas along the German
shores. The nation plans to install a total

Exomission’s competence lies in the development and distribution
of individually tailored exhaust gas after-treatment systems. In
addition, using a fuel water emulsion (FWE) technology, we offer a
very efficient primary technology for in-cylinder emission reductions.
Within the FWE system, a specific amount of water, depending on
the engine load and the fuel consumption, is dosed into the fuel.
The mixture of water and fuel is emulsified in a special unit and injected
into the engine.
As a result, soot emission can be reduced by up to 90%, NOx emissions by up to 45% and additionally carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons
by up to 30%. Depending on the engine type and operating conditions
even a small percentage fuel saving is possible.

For exhaust gas after-treatment, we offer the following technologies,
both as standalone systems and in combination with the FWE:
I SCR system (selective catalytic reduction) to reduce oxides of
nitrogen
I DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) to reduce particulate emissions
These technologies can be used on the main engines of inland and
seagoing vessels, as well as on the on-board power generator
engines.

By operating the Maritime Centre, we at Flensburg University of Applied
Sciences have taken on a teaching obligation to apply our scientific expertise
for the future of shipping while addressing current and future challenges.
This also means providing support in finding solutions to issues in study and
final projects, and maintaining a broad international competence network of
industrial players and associations.
Our activities focus on energy efficiency, emission reductions, and safe,
environmentally sound maritime operations. In addition to learning about
engineering and technological topics and how they fit into context in bridge
and engine room operations, we place very high priority on our students
completely appreciating the importance of responsibility in dealing with
complex systems in real-life applications at high sea.
Energy engineering has long since played a major role at Flensburg University
of Applied Sciences; however, maritime sciences obviously take an
increasing important position in the university‘s range of subjects, in view of
the university‘s regional background. There is good reason for the excellent
reputation that nautical specialists and maritime engineers from Flensburg
enjoy in their future field of activity.

The University of Applied Sciences Kiel is one of the leading institutions
for the qualification of bachelor and master engineers in the fields of ship
building, maritime technology and offshore industrial engineering. Located
in a core region of the German shipbuilding industry, Kiel University holds
close connections to shipyards, engineering offices and subsuppliers to
support academic-industrial technology exchange and offer various
research- and development projects. With these activities it offers an
encompassing wealth of knowledge and experience to its students and
industrial partners.
The institute for shipbuilding technology comprises 4 full-time professors
and 5 scientific employees engaged in the towing tank, wind channel and
laboratories for strength- or CAD- applications. These competences are
supported by further professors for mechanical engineering and offshore
technology as well as campus faculties for electrical engineering, economy
affairs and communication medias.
For R&D projects the university-assigned Forschungs- und Entwicklungszentrum FH-Kiel GmbH , the YRU (Yacht Research Unit), the IMST (material
and surface technology) and the CIMTT (computer integrated manufacturing)
are prime addresses for technology transfer or complete project solutions.

Education
The institute is responsible for the education in Naval Architecture. The lectures
cover basic hydrostatics, design principles and methodologies, safety of
ships, resistance and propulsion, marine propellers and the design of high
value ships.
An important focus is the introduction of first principle design methods into
the early design process. The institute is specialized in high value ships such
as Pax, RoPax, RoRo and Navy Ships.
Main Areas of Research
• Development of hydrodynamic Calculation Methods for the early design
stage of ships
• Development of new Design Methods for Product Design in Naval Architecture
• Simulation of Propeller induced Pressure Fluctuations.
• Designloads on Ruders and other maneuvering Devices.
• Hulloptimisation with CFD Methods.
• Maneuvering behavior at slow Speeds.
Service
The institute runs several projects for different industrial partners such as
shipyards, suppliers and ship owners. This covers the evaluation of ship
designs or supply parts as well as the development of tailor made evaluation
software for industrial partners.

Education
The Institute of Ship Technology, Ocean Engineering and Transport Systems
(ISMT) provides students with a profound knowledge in the fields of ship
technology and ocean engineering. The academic curriculum of engineering
with emphasis on “Ship Technology and Ocean Engineering” within the
department “Mechanical and Process Engineering” of the Faculty of
Engineering is based on the internationally accredited undergraduate and
graduates programmes “Mechanical Engineering”. The core areas of teaching
are hydrodynamics and ship design, marine power plants as well as the
structural design of ships and offshore constructions.
Research
In research, the institute particularly concentrates on the fields of hydrodynamics and fluid-structure-interaction as well as the design of marine
power plants and investigates in the field of ocean engineering. The students
are given the chance to get involved in research projects and obtain practical
experience in the institute’s own laboratory.
Services
– PIV (Particle-Image-Velocimetry) measurements
– Experimental investigations of fluid motions in partially filled tanks,
containers, etc. as well as the resulting loads
– Hydrodynamic investigations in the maritime context (seakeeping, loads,
manoeuvring, shallow water, resistance, propulsion, etc.)
