About the speaker and subject
K.K. Muhammed who retired from the Archaeological Survey of India as Regional
Director has to his credit the excavation of Kesariya stupa in Bihar, Ibadat khana and
Christian Chapel in Fatehpur Sikri and St. Augustin Church in Goa. He has undertaken
a number of challenging Conversations in different parts of the country often taking
the help of dacoits in Chambal valley and Naxal groups of Chathisgarh. For his
outstanding works in the field of conservation, he has been awarded with a number of
International, National and State awards.
Excavation and conservation of Buddhist heritage in UP and Bihar is nothing but a
power point presentation of Archaeology of early Budhhist period where one can
virtually follow Lord Buddha on his last journey from Rajgir to Kushinagar. This journey
would be interesting and informative as it is with someone who has excavated some
of the Buddhist stupas and played a prominent part in the conservation of many sites
such as Nalanda, Vikram Shila, Kumrahar, Vaishali, Kesariya and Sarnath. The intriguing
question of why some of the early researchers mistook Budhha as from Africa and
Ashoka as a king of Ceylon would be dealt with.

No follower of "Minimum intervention in Monuments" Mr. Muhammed is one of
those early iconoclasts who broke away with it and boldly initiated the policy of
"Required Restoration". He believes Minimum Intervention is the Mantra of those
who preach and teach conservation but doesn't breath and practice it.
