„When I was growing up, I watched Formula 1 and watched Ayrton Senna and Prost. And
funny enough they were racing for McLaren back then. It was probably one of the best eras
to grow and be a kid and watch F1. Massive inspiration, so they were sort of heros but not
as much as my dad was. You know my dad made my career. I started racing at 8, my dad
used to stand on the circuit and tell me where to drive, which racing lines to take. You know
in those days we didn’t have enough money to go professional racing but he worked hard so
we could go racing every weekend and he is the guy who went out and found the sponsors
and the manager that took me through to F1.”

“Pressure doesn’t really affect me in that way because I started at such an early age, you
learn things a lot quicker at an early age. You know I have confidence in my own ability and
you understand your surroundings at speed at 8 years old. It is my 16th year in F1 this year,
which is scary because it feels like I started yesterday. Some people will like your style of
driving others won’t. I, for example, loved Alain Prost the way he went racing. Ayrton Senna
I knew he was passionate about the sport, he was a very aggressive driver and he was
probably quicker than Alain Prost but Alain Prost could still beat him. They called the
scientist, the professor. He was a very intelligent driver, it is so interesting to hear the stories
and see how you compare to that individual that you looked up to as a kid. I really do think,

I based myself on him as a kid growing up driving style. He was a really inspirational
individual.”

“My special win was winning in Suzuka, in Japan, because it is the circuit I watched Ayrton
and Alain racing on in the Eighties fighting for a win, and I was able to win there just in front
of two other world champions. “

“F1 is all about aerodynamics, as soon as you got those big wings on the car, pushing the
car onto the road they work at different positions, it is so technical and that is a part of the
job that I have learned over the years and I have loved that when you talk to the engineers
about aerodynamics. I mean in aerodynamics if I have a look at this and go: are you kidding
me? First of all, the driver can’t see anything, and there it is not really doing much because
this car never went in a wind tunnel, it was a lot of engineers thinking well this probably
would work. The technologies have come so far, every year they limit us in what we can do.
There is a limit of how far we can push downforce. Most circuits have long straights and we
need an efficient car, something that is slippery in the wind.”

When people say what scares you the most in life. I think for a lot of sportsmen it is failure.
It is not succeeding in what you think you are good at. I really went through some difficult
times to get into a competitive car, it took 8 years before I found a car that I could win races
with. You need lightning reaction, the start and you react when the lights are going out, it is
0.8 of a second and that is what gives you the buzz, the adrenaline rush in a F1 car, and that
is just you on your own, then you have all the cars around you, it is an absolute mess, only
your brain is just firing in every single way possible. In that period of time you realize what
sort of person you are.”

“When I crossed the finish line in Brazil, when I won the world championship, everything was
going through my mind, you think back to hundreds of races that you have done, and you
think of what you have gone through, the good times, the bad times, things are just flashing
up in your mind what has happened to you in your career. It is amazing how much can go

“When the race starts only we cannot…what they normally do is, the team monitor all the
systems on the background, they know exactly where is the perfect bite point and
temperature of the clutches so they feedback to us and then we make an adjustment from
the steering wheel to have the best start possible but now this won’t be available anymore.”

Put simply that means the driver and his skill are again being tested.
This year, there's also the virtual safety car. The new safety system shows a minimum sector
time on the steering wheel's display. The driver is not allowed to go below it. Naturally, only
in dangerous situations.

The days when a steering wheel was just for steering are long gone. Nowadays, the drivers
have individually adapted control centres: 1.8kg light, the handles sometimes leather,
sometimes silicon. The buttons to suit personal preference. The likes of us will never
understand it! But one thing never changes, not even for the world champion:

Really enjoy the food – Sushi, I have that pretty much every day, so Japanese is definitely
my favourite food.
The fans are very, very enthusiastic in Japan.

One of the greatest tracks, if not the greatest track in the world.
It’s great for overtaking.

Coming down to turn 1.

Flat out through the first part which is incredibly fast and then you’re braking a little bit, and
down to third gear generally it might be forth this year.
You’re using all the road, taking the apex, turn 3, then into 4 and 5, you’re just kind of
running quite wide out of 5 and then hugging the apex of turn 6. Really important to get
back to the right side before we go into Turn 7 and hook the car up and flat out up the hill.
Really important to get the full throttle as quick as possible.
It’s 8 and 9 where you gonna braking through a right hander and then into another right
hander.

So this is really a track that confidence is everything.

The grip is so low through this corner, because it’s such a downforce corner. Your car is set
up for the high-speed. Come out of that hairpin it’s really important to get a good exit, flat

out all way down to turn 13. It’s very fast on the way in, it’s just about to keep in the middle
the speed up all the way in and also to get full throttle very quick using every inch of the
circuit.
Out of the last corner, the thing is you have great sand traps here in grass, it’s one of the
best tracks in the world and that’s the lap in Suzuka.

Japan stands for two drivers who didn't get on. Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. Suzuka 1989:
the title for Prost comes via this crash. The professor and the genius. To this day, the mother
of all Formula One duels.

The frosty relationship at McLaren is triggered by the 1989 San Marino Grand Prix. Prost and
Senna have an agreement not to attack each other in the first corner. Due to an accident,
the race has to be restarted. For Senna the restart means 'no more agreement' and he

First pole in RED, then leading in controlled fashion in Singapore and ultimately an emotional
win. Sebastian Vettel strikes for the third time in his first season with Ferrari, as his friend
and role model Michael Schumacher did in 1996. It was incidentally Vettel's 42nd victory,
thus taking him past Ayrton Senna in this best drivers list.
The championship is getting exciting again. Now he needs further success in Suzuka:

flowting corners where you’re really experience the limit of the cars, you really feel alive.”

It was also a special race in Singapore for Max Verstappen. After a poor start, last; valuable
points picked up finishing eighth; and just before the end going against team orders as well.
Let team-mate Sainz overtake again? No way! ;-).
Team principal Tost was relaxed about it, arguing: "He's a racer after all!"

20th November, Olympic Stadium, London. The venue for the Race of Champions! And he's
confirmed! Sebastian Vettel has - surprisingly for many - been allowed by his Ferrari team to
take part, even though the event this year comes just a week before the season's final F1
race in Abu Dhabi.

The hardest braking point on the Suzuka International Circuit lies ahead of the Casio
Triangle. The F1 drivers decelerate sharply here by 218 km/h over just 146 metres within
1.63 seconds. 1668 kW of brake power are released in the process! 4.1G is exerted onto the
driver, while he pushes with 145 kg onto the brake.

sie damals für McLaren fuhren. Es war wahrscheinlich eine der besten Zeiten aufzuwachsen,
Kind zu sein und Formel 1 zu schauen. Sie waren eine Art Helden für mich, eine starke
Inspiration – nur mein Vater übertraf das noch. Ich habe meine Karriere meinem Vater zu
verdanken. Ich kam mit 8 Jahren zum Rennsport. Mein Vater stand an der Strecke und zeigte
mir, wo und welche Linien ich fahren muss. Wir hatten damals nicht genug Geld für den
professionellen Rennsport. Mein Vater arbeitete hart, damit wir jedes Wochenende zum
Rennen konnten. Und mein Vater fand Sponsoren und den Manager, der mich in die Formel
1 brachte."

"Ich spüre keinen so großen Druck, weil ich sehr früh begonnen habe und man in jungen
Jahren viel schneller lernt. Ich habe Vertrauen in meine eigenen Fähigkeiten. Als Achtjähriger
begreift man seine Umgebung sehr schnell. Das ist jetzt mein 16. Jahr in der Formel 1 –
beängstigend, weil es sich anfühlt, als hätte ich gestern erst begonnen. Einige mögen deinen
Fahrstil, andere nicht. Ich mochte es, wie Alain Prost seine Rennen anging. Ayrton Senna war
ein leidenschaftlicher Rennfahrer, sehr aggressiv und wahrscheinlich schneller als Alain Prost,
aber Alain Prost konnte ihn trotzdem schlagen. Sie wurden "Genie" und "Professor"
genannt. Prost war ein sehr intelligenter Fahrer. Es ist so interessant, die Geschichten zu
hören und sich selbst mit der Person zu vergleichen, die einem als Kind Vorbild war. Ich
glaube wirklich, dass ich meinen Fahrstil an ihm orientiert habe. Er war eine echt
inspirierende Persönlichkeit."

Fahrer kann ja gar nichts sehen und der Flügel bringt nichts. Dieses Auto war nie in einem
Windkanal. Aber die Techniker waren überzeugt, dass es funktioniert. Die Technologie ist
weit fortgeschritten, aber jedes Jahr bekommen wir Begrenzungen auferlegt. Der Abtrieb ist
ebenfalls begrenzt. Auf den meisten Strecken gibt es lange Geraden, daher brauchen wir ein
effizientes Auto mit geringem Luftwiderstand."

"Was macht den Leuten am meisten Angst im Leben? Für viele Sportler ist es die Angst zu
versagen, denke ich. Wenn du in etwas, von dem du glaubst, dass du gut bist, keinen Erfolg
hast. Ich hatte auch schon eine schwierige Zeit. Es dauerte 8 Jahre, bis ich ein Auto fand,
mit dem ich Rennen gewinnen kann. Man braucht eine blitzschnelle Reaktion. Beim Start

Die Zeiten, als ein Lenkrad nur zum Lenken da war, sind schon lange vorbei. Heutzutage
haben die Fahrer individuell angepasste Schaltzentralen: 1,8 kg leicht, die Griffe mal aus
Leder, mal aus Silikon. Die Knöpfe je nach persönlicher Präferenz. Unsereins wird’s nie
kapieren! Eines ändert sich aber nie, auch nicht für den Weltmeister:

Mit Vollgas durch den ersten Teil, der unglaublich schnell ist. Dann ein bisschen bremsen und
in den 3. Gang runterschalten, dieses Jahr vielleicht im Vierten.
Die ganze Breite nutzen, am Scheitel entlang in Kurve 3, dann in 4 und 5. Aus 5 recht weit
raus an den Scheitel von Kurve 6 heran. Sehr wichtig, vor Eingang in Kurve 7 auf die rechte
Seite zu kommen. Dann beschleunigen und mit Vollgas den Berg hoch. Hier unbedingt so
schnell wie möglich Vollgas erreichen.
In den aufeinander folgenden Rechtskurven 8 und 9 wird gebremst.

Bei dieser Strecke ist Vertrauen alles.

Der Grip in der Kurve ist so gering, weil dein Auto auf dieser Strecke auf Highspeed
ausgelegt ist. Aus der Haarnadel heraus kommt es auf einen guten Ausgang an. Vollgas bis
Kurve 13. Der Eingang ist sehr schnell. Man muss in der Mitte das Tempo halten und jeden
Zentimeter der Strecke nutzen, um schnell wieder Vollgas zu haben.
Dann aus der letzten Kurve. Hier sind große Sandbetten im Gras. Das ist eine der besten
Strecken der Welt. Und das war die Runde in Suzuka.

Sieg. Sebastian Vettel schlägt in seiner ersten Ferrari-Saison zum dritten Mal zu, so wie 1996

den Formel 1-Fahrer und währenddessen tritt er mit 145 kg auf die Bremse.
