Mit der Organisation einer internationalen
Quilt Ausstellung in Berlin ist für mich ein lang
gehegter Traum wahr geworden. Seit einigen
Jahren organisieren mein Team und ich mit großer
Leidenschaft die EXPO VELDHOVEN und das
OEQC, das Open European Quilt Championship, in
Veldhoven in den Niederlanden. Diese Festivals sind
bekannt für ihren internationalen Charakter. Wir
begrüßen jedes Jahr Besucher, Gastkollektionen
und Landner weltweit aus den unterschiedlichsten Ländern. Diese
Veranstaltungen werden immer mit viel Begeisterung und Freude
organisiert. Die EXPO BERLIN als internationale Veranstaltung stellt
eine völlig neue Herausforderung für mein Team und mich dar.
Wir präsentieren die erste EXPO BERLIN 2014 mit wunderschönen
Gastkollektionen, interessanten Vorführungen und einer großen
Auswahl an Quiltshops. Da wir dies feiern wollen wird es täglich um
15:00 Uhr eine Tombola mit vielen wertvollen Preisen geben unter
anderem kann eine neue Janome Nähmaschine gewonnen werden.
Die EXPO BERLIN 2014 findet im Herzen von Berlin in der
Friedrichstrasse statt, nahe dem Checkpoint Charlie. Wollten Sie
Berlin schon einmal im Frühjahr besuchen? Besuchen Sie die EXPO
BERLIN 2014 und genießen Sie gleichzeitig die pulsierende Stadt
Berlin mit ihren vielen historischen Höhepunkten.

The organization of an international quilt exhibition in Berlin is a
dream come true. For several years my team and I organize EXPO
VELDHOVEN and the Open European Quilt Championships with great
enthusiasm in Veldhoven, the Netherlands. These festivals are known
for its international character. Every year we welcome visitors, guest
collections and stallholders from all over the world. The events in
Veldhoven are organized with great pleasure and ease. However, the
organization of EXPO BERLIN at an international venue is a complete
new challenge which we have taken on with both hands.
We celebrate the first edition of EXPO BERLIN 2014 with beautiful
guest collections, interesting demonstrations and a wide range of
shops. Since we have something to celebrate, we have a treat! There
is a tombola at 3 pm in which great prizes are to be won, including a
brand new Janome sewing machine.
EXPO BERLIN 2014 will take place in the heart of Berlin at the
Friedrichstrasse, close to Checkpoint Charlie. Have you always
wanted to enjoy Berlin in spring time? Please visit EXPO BERLIN
2014 and enjoy the ever vivid city of Berlin with its many historical
highlights at the same time.

Die Ausstellung
Während der ersten EXPO BERLIN 2014 heißen
wir internationale Textilkünstler und Quiltguilden
mit wunderschönen Gastkollektionen herzlich
willkommen. Textile Festivals hat ausgewählte
Arbeiten textiler Handwerkskunst des Gastlandes
Deutschlandes ausgewählt. Sowohl die Patchwork Gilde Deutschland e.V. als auch die Textilkünstlerin Brigitte Morgenroth präsentieren
jeweils eine Kollektion ihrer Arbeiten bei der
EXPO BERLIN 2014. Diese Gastausstellungen
werden durch Kollektionen aus Italien, den Niederlanden und Frankreich ergänzt. Zusätzlich
werden die Quilts der Gewinner des Wettbewerbs
OEQC (Open European Quilt Championchips)
2013 ausgestellt werden, da Berlin Quelle der Inspiration zu diesem Wettbewerb war.

einige neue Ideen präsentiert werden. Die Ladner
bieten ein reichhaltiges Angebot an Zubehör für
alle Liebhaber des Quilten und Pachwork an ihren
Ständen an. Wenn Sie nur zum Einkaufen durch
die Ladengassen schlendern wollen, benötigen
Sie kein Eintrittsticket. So können Sie mehrmals
bei der EXPO BERLIN 2014 vorbeischauen. Genießen Sie die Ausstellung, sammeln Sie Inspirationen für eigene Werke und stöbern Sie ausgiebig für aktuelle oder zukünftige Projekte in den
Ständen unserer Ladner.

Exhibition
During the first edition of EXPO BERLIN 2014 we
welcome beautiful guest collections of international textile artists and quilting guilds. Textile Festivals surely does not pass the beautiful works of
textile art made in the host country Germany.
Both Patchwork Gilde Deutschland and Brigitte
Morgenroth have a collection of quilts on display
at EXPO BERLIN 2014. These collections are complemented with guest collections from Italy, The
Netherlands and France. In addition to this, last
years’ price winning quilts at Open European Quilt
Championships 2013 are on display, since the entries were inspired by Berlin.
Shopping
The exhibition at EXPO BERLIN 2014 will leave
you with a head full of new ideas. Stallholders
offer a wide range of quilting materials to get you
started. If you want to stroll past the shops, you
do not need an entrance ticket. You can visit the
shops as often as you like. Enjoy the exhibition,
fuel your inspiration and find your materials for
new or renewed quilt projects at the shops of our
stallholders.

Demonstrationen
Viele der ausgewählten Gastkollektionen werden
durch renommierte internationale Textilkünstlerinnen begleitet. Sie lieben die Reaktionen der
Besucher, Gespräche mit den Besuchern zu führen und geben gerne Ihr Wissen und ihre persönlichen Techniken bei Demonstrationen an die interessierten Besucher weiter. Schauen Sie z.B.
Brigitte Morgenroth bei ihrer Handnähtechnik
über die Schulter, besuchen Sie die Handspinngilde bei Ihren Vorführungen und lernen Sie Details beim Weben von Hand mit Emma Wood kennen.
Gastkollektionen
Zusätzlich zu unseren Gastkollektionen heißen
wir eine attraktive Ausstellung von Fibres Textiles aus Frankreich willkommen, eine Ausstellung
von Fadentechniken und Spinntechniken. Diese
Ausstellung ist eine Reise durch die unterschiedlichen Kontinente und präsentiert die jeweiligen
Besonderheiten an eingesetzten Materialien und
üblichen Spinntechniken. Wenn Sie einmal erleben möchten, wie der für die Textilkünstler unverzichtbare Faden entstanden ist und wie diese
Handwerkskunst gewachsen ist? Sie können all
dies bei einem Besuch der Ausstellung von Fibres
Textiles erleben.
Demonstrations
Many of the beautiful guest collections are accompanied by international acknowledged textile
artists. As much as they enjoy the reactions of
the public, they are also happy to share their
knowledge and demonstrate their signature techniques. See Brigitte Morgenroth perform her

and learn more about woven textile design with
Emma Wood.
Guest exhibition
In addition to our guest collections we also welcome a guest exhibition of Fibres Textiles from
France. This is an exhibition of yarns and spinning
techniques. It is a journey through different continents, where distinctive materials and spinning
techniques for each continent are shown. Have
you always wanted to see, how the indispensable
yarns for textile artists arise and are developed?
Be sure to visit the exhibition of Fibres Textiles.

OEQC Kollektion
Beim letztjährigen OEQC, dem Open European Quilt
Championship 2013 im Oktober 2013, war das
Thema des Wettbewerbs “Berlin”. Es wurden viele
Quilts aus der ganzen Welt einem begeisterten Publikum und einer kritischen Expertenjury präsentiert.
An dieser Stelle wollen wir uns ganz herzlich bei unserem Gastjuror Herr Notker Schweikhardt bedanken. Als Sprecher der Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft Kultur
hat er sich besonders bemüht, die gezeigten Werke mit
dem Thema „Berlin“ auszuzeichnen.
Eine Auswahl der preisgekrönten Quilts ist auf der diesjährigen EXPO BERLIN 2014 zu sehen.
OEQC Collection
During the last edition of the Open European Quilt
Championships, which we organized from October 17th until October 20th 2013 in Veldhoven, The
Netherlands, many quilters from all over the world showed their very best work to an enthusiastic
audience, as well as to a critical expert jury.
During an exciting award ceremony, more than twenty-five quilters received an award for their quilt
in different categories. You can check out all the winners here.
For those who missed the Open European Quilt Championships, we will show the top quilts of our winners at EXPO BERLIN 2014 as well. Some of these quilts are shown here.
Brigitte Morgenroth - Deutschland
1990 begann ich in Bophuthatswana, einem Homeland von
Südafrika, zu quilten. Ich arbeitete ehrenamtlich in einem
Krankenhaus und konzentrierte mich in meiner Freizeit auf
das Quilten. Ich habe mir dieses Handwerk auf Grund einiger Fotos von amischen Quilts selbst beigebracht.
Bei einem berufsbedingten Aufenthalt in Libyen benutzte
ich die dort vorhandenen Stoffe: Polyester-Satin in leuchtenden Farben, Nylon, Viskose und Mischgewebe.
Seit langem ist Farbe der Ausgangspunkt meiner Arbeiten. Mit Farbe, klarer Linienführung und mit
besonders ausgewählten Materialien, wie Doupion-Seide und Polyester-Satin, kann ich wunderschöne Lichteffekte erzielen. Mit dieser Technik verleihe ich traditionellen Mustern einen modernen
Charakter.
Ich nähe hauptsächlich große Quilts, zusätzlich Kleinere in diffizilerem Stil.
Meine Arbeiten sind ausschließlich handgequiltet. Ich habe seit 1990 circa 100 Quilts hergestellt,
an 27 Quiltausstellungen teilgenommen und 18 eigene Ausstellungen gehabt.
Brigitte Morgenroth - Germany
In 1990 I began to quilt in Bophuthatswana, a former homeland in South Africa. I did voluntary work
at the hospital and focused in my spare time on quilting. I taught myself how to quilt, with photos of
Amish quilts as the only source of guidance.

During a work related residence in Libya I used the fabrics that were available there; polyester satin
in bright colours, nylon, viscose, and blended fabrics.
I am most inspired by colour in Dupion silk, polyester-satin, sometimes combined with printed cotton, and I like to work in strict geometric patterns, together yielding a modern, bright appearance.
Log cabin and its variations are of particular interest to me, because they produce wonderful light
and shadow effects due to the fibre orientation.
I am fond of sewing large quilts and more sophisticated smaller ones in bright colours, also quilts
completely sewn by hand. All my quilts are hand quilted.
Yielding my passion has resulted in a total of about hundred pieces since 1990. I have taken part in
twenty-seven quilt exhibitions and arranged eighteen solo exhibitions.
Patchwork Gilde - Deutschland
Die Patchwork Gilde Deutschland bringt
seit Jahren Quilter aus ganz Deutschland
zusammen. Die Ausstellungen der Gilde lassen
jährlich viele Quilter Ihre Leidenschaft für das
Quilten gemeinsam erleben. Die Patchwork
Gilde Deutschland zeigt Exponate ihrer zehnten
jurierten Quiltausstellung, der T bis M X, die
zehnte Tradition bis Moderne.
Die Patchwork Gilde Deutschland hat mehr
als 6000 Mitglieder – ein riesiges Potential an
Können, Kraft, Kreativität und Ideen – und
genießt international ein hohes Ansehen. Es liegt
in unser aller Interesse, durch noch attraktivere
Wettbewerbe die Quiltkunst zu fördern und ihr
Ansehen auch in der Öffentlichkeit zu heben.
Mit der Kollektion “Tradition bis Moderne X” auf der EXPO BERLIN
trägt die deutsche Gilde diesem Anspruch Rechnung.
Patchwork Gilde - Germany
For several years Patchwork Gilde Deutschland brings quilters
from all over Germany together. Every year the German Patchwork Guild let quilters experience and share their passion for quilting during their exhibitions. The
German Patchwork Guild exhibits their tenth quilt exhibition, Tradition bis Moderne X during EXPO
BERLIN 2014.
Patchwork Gilde Deutschland has a very good reputation and with more than 6.000 members it has
access to a great potential of knowledge of crafts, creativity and ideas. The German Patchwork Guild
considers it important to promote quilting to the public and improve its reputation by means of attractive competitions. Patchwork Gilde Deutschland contributes to this goal with the exhibition of the
collection Tradition bis Modern at EXPO BERLIN 2014.
Ans Schipper-Vermeiren - Niederlande
Vierzig Jahre lang habe ich Objekte für Geschäfte und Zeitschriften gestrickt. Aber im September
1990 ist es passiert. Als ich schutzsuchend in einem Geschäft Unterschlupf fand, wurde mein Blick
von einem Quiltmagazin gefangen: eine Tagesdecke aus gefärbten Stoffstücken. Der Ladenbesitzer erklärte mir es handele sich um Quilt. Ein Wort, das ich noch nie zuvor gehört habe. Jetzt, 20
Jahr und 80 Quilts später bin ich immer noch begeisterte Quilterin. Geometrisches Design habe

ich schon immer gemocht: es kann so viel Schönes aus Dreiecken und Rechtecken entstehen. Alle
meine Quilts sind von mir gestaltet und handgequiltet. Quilten ist eine Tätigkeit, die viel Energie
zurück gibt, sie verbreitet Selbstvertrauen und beschert Glück.
Ans Schipper-Vermeiren - The Netherlands
For forty years I created original knitwear for shops and
magazines. But in September 1990 the great revolution
came. Sheltering in a shop for downpour, the front-cover
of a quilt magazine caught my attention: a bedspread
made out of colored patches of fabrics. The owner told
me that it was a quilt, it was the first time I had heard the
term. Now twenty-one years and about eighty quilts later I am still enthusiastic. Geometric designs have always
had my preference. You can do so much with squares and
triangles. All my quilts are designed by me and are hand
quilted. Everything about quilting gives me energy, self-confidence and happiness.

Die Mitglieder von Quilt Italia zeigen eine Serie
neuer Arbeiten. Sie haben das Thema „italienischer
Film“ gewählt, weil Film ein ausgezeichnetes Medium ist, um über italienische Kultur und Lifestyle
zu sprechen. Diese Facetten italienischen Lebens in
Patchworks einzufangen, war für uns eine interessante Herausforderung.

Italian Cinema collection by Quilt Italia
Quilt Italia, the Italian National Patchwork Association has their collection “Italian Cinema” on display
during EXPO BERLIN 2014, from the 30th of May until the 1st of June. This is a series of new works
realized by the members of the association.
Why Italian cinema? Because our film is a driving force to promote and talk about Italy and the Italian lifestyle. Why patchwork? Because we wanted to “interpret” the film with the fabric. The 20132014 is, for Italy, a biennium to promote Italian cinema abroad, we want to support it and remember
our great filmmakers and actors. The cinema and the patchwork are portrayed as “Made in Italy”
products that needs to be promoted in the world, and whose latest award has been the Academy
Award for Best Foreign Film for “La grande bellezza”.
White Collection von Quilt Italia
Die Ausstellung zeigt 24 Arbeiten von 6 Quiltvereinen aus der Region von Veneto. Diese Vereine
arbeiten gemeinsam daran, Patchwork und Quilten bekannter zu machen und jungen Leuten diese
Kunstform nahe zu bringen. Im Weiteren konzentriert sich Ihre Arbeit darauf, die Dachorganisation
„Quilt Italia“ international bekannter zu machen.
Die Kollektion „White“ besteht aus Gruppenarbeiten, die sich als eine Verbindung zwischen moderner
Kunst und traditionellem Handwerk verstehen. Das Ergebnis ist eine Serie linearer Quilts, die auf

White collection by Quilt Italia
White Collection of Quilt Italia is a
collective exhibition of twenty-four
works made by the six associates
from the Veneto region. Together
they work to make patchwork and
quilting more popular by making it
known to younger generations. Furthermore, they try to make patchwork and quilting more internationally known through the Italian quilt
association QuiltItalia, of which all
the local associations belong to.
In the original works that compose
the collection “White”, modern art
is intertwined and integrated with
traditional techniques, that resulted
into works that were born from more
hands. The result is a series of linear but meticulously made wall-hangings, that shows care and attention in the chosen construction
techniques.
The collection has been exhibited in Italy for the first time in October 2013 during a pre-Christmas
event, hence the choice of the White Theme.

„Fibres Textiles“ ist eine Ausstellung über Garn, die
charakteristische Materialien und Spinntechniken aus aller
Welt zeigt.
Seit Jahrhunderten bilden Fasern von Pflanzen und Tieren
den Rohstoff für Materialien, um Kleidung und Heimtextilien
herzustellen. Der historische Gebrauch und die Verarbeitung
von Fasern kann auf allen Kontinenten nachgewiesen werden
und zeugt vom Erfindungsreichtum des Menschen.
Heutzutage dominieren chemische und synthetische Fasern
den Markt. Ihre Nachteile sind weitreichend bekannt:
der Verbrauch von nicht erneuerbaren Ressourcen und
Gesundheitsgefährdung. Biologisch abbaubare, erneuerbare
und oft lokal hergestellte, natürliche Fasern können in unserer
Welt wieder eine wichtige Rolle spielen.
Fibres Textiles - France
Fibres textiles is a guest exhibition at EXPO BERLIN 2014. This exhibition of yarns is a journey
through the different continents, where distinctive materials and spinning techniques for each continent are shown.
For millennia, natural fibers from plants or animals, have been the essential raw material for the
making of clothing and for home use. Fibers are found on all continents, and the many existing tech-

niques of transformation of fibers have been giving evidence of the inventiveness of men and women
since very old times.
Today, chemical and synthetical fibers dominate the market, but their limitations are known: waste
of non-renewable resources, health issues. Biodegradable, renewable and often produced locally,
natural fibers can play again an important part in our world.
Heidi Stegehuis - Die Niederlande
1997 habe ich mit dem Quilten angefangen und in 1998 hatte ich
bereits meine erste Ausstellung in Veldhoven. Später habe ich
weltweit an den unterschiedlichsten Ausstellungen teilgenommen.
Meine Arbeiten waren in Deutschland, England, Frankreich, Schweiz,
Japan und USA ausgestellt und ich war professionelles Mitglied von
SAQA.
Ich liebe es, Dinge meiner täglichen Unmgebung textil umzusetzen.
Dabei werde ich von der Realität wie auch von Träumen inspiriert.
Meine jüngste Herausforderung ist es, meine Quilt zu zeichnen. Ich
nahm in den vergangenen vier Jahren an Kursen renommierter Watercolor Künstler teil, um diese
Technik zu erlernen. Damit möchte ich die Lücke zwischen Watercolor und Quilten schließen.
Heidi Stegehuis - The Netherlands
In 1997, I started quilting and in 1998 I had my first quilt at the exhibition in Veldhoven. Later on
I participated in various exhibitions all over the world; I have been to The Netherlands, Germany,
England, France, Switzerland, Japan and the USA. I was a professional member of SAQA.
I love creating things from the world that surrounds me. I am inspired by reality as well as by
dreams. The latest challenge for me is to paint my quilts. I took lessons from famous watercolor
artists the last four years to learn this technique.
I want to close the gap between watercolor art and quilting.
