stick to our essence - to ensure excellence in journalism and to provide the bestcontent to our readers.
Our industry is transforming rapidly, habits of our customers to consume information and to be entertained are changing. Success of our business highly depends
on our ability to look ahead and to develop and implement visionary ideas. Our
strengths are our brands which we manage in anentrepreneurial way. While we
focus on our strong core brands, we accelerate digital transformation and driveinnovations.
Building on ou rrelations with our key stakeholders helps us to reflect on our priorities in corporate responsibility while assesing opportunities to improve even more
our efforts. We use the collected data in this context also toassesspotential risks
related toour workforce, our economical performanceand our impact on theenvironment.

we apply ethical standards to all our publishing and newspaper activities, to our
contacts with business partners and competitors as well as to our relations with
our employees.
Promoting and training young journalists is a major part of our social commitment.
Journalism is much faster today, there is a much bigger competition, technology
has progressed. It is a profession which requires great responsibility and therefore
good training. Considering all thiswe establishedthe “Blic school of journalism” with
a clear aim - to improve professional knowledge of our young colleagues, both
their journalistic skills and the use of technology, to help them gain self-esteem
and become acquainted with the quintessence of the independent and investigative.Because daily Blic is pivot of independent journalism and the guiding idea of
a wider moral and ethical issues in journalism our intention is to continue in same
direction: dedicated and constantly working to achieve and improve corporate values.
Supporting the community in which our companyoperates isimportant for us. The
Management of Ringier Axel Springer Serbia and the Blic editors are aware of
the power of media and the responsibility that comes with it. Because of that, the
company establishedthe “Blic Foundation”in order to provide help for the most
vulnerable peoplein Serbia- childrenfrom sociallydisadvantaged families.Humanitarian initiatives such as“Heart for children” or “HELP”, the Blic foundation raised
more than 800,000 euros from 20?? Until today. So farBlic foundation managed:
• to ensure better living conditions for more than 400 children throughout Serbia
by providing furniture, household appliances, firewood, adaptation of old houses. Also, Foundation has bought houses for 25 practically homeless families
until now.
• to renovate and equip only pediatric clinical department of Ophthalmology in
Serbia
• to renew dairy cuisine at the “Institute for Mother and Child”
• to renew and equip with hospital furniture the neurology department in Valjevo
hospital
• to renovate and equip 10 houses after the disastrous floods in May 2014.
This sustainability report contains information on the initiatives and the engagement of Ringier Axel Springer Serbia during 2013 and 2014. I want to thank you

Ringier Axel Springer Media AG, to which Ringier Axel Springer Serbia
belongs to, is a leading integrated multimedia company in Central and
Eastern Europe. The company was established on 1 July 2010 as a joint
venture between Swiss Ringier AG and German Axel Springer SE
Today, Ringier Axel Springer Media AG manages an extensive portfolio
of more than 160 digital and print offerings in the expanding markets of
Poland, Slovakia, Serbia and Hungary. Based on brands such as FAKT,
NOVÝ ČAS, BLIC and BLIKK, Ringier Axel Springer Media AG is the market
leader in tabloid publications, one of the largest magazine publishers in
the region and owner of the most visited internet sites.
Ringier Axel Springer Media has its headquarters at Kreuzstrasse 26,
8008 Zurich, Switzerland and has approximately 2700 employees.
Ringier Axel Springer Serbia was founded in 2010 and encompasses
successfully established multimedia brand families such as Blic, 24 Sata,
ALO!, Blic žena, Blic Puls, NIN and Auto Bild. As a leading media company
Ringier Axel Springer Serbia aims to further expand on this position and
establish itself as the LEADING DIGITAL AND MEDIA COMPANY in Serbia.

As an independent and leading media
company in Serbia we take our responsibility towards our users, readers, advertising and print customers, employees,
shareholders or environmental organizations that deal with sustainability issues in
our industry our interest groups.
A continuous dialog with stakeholders as
well as stakeholder surveys at the same
time allows an assessment of the general
social interest.
This is why we issue a sustainability report
- to support their expectations, to communicate clearly and openly and to share
ideas.
Sustainability reporting is the practice of measuring, disclosing, and being accountable to internal and
external stakeholders for organizational performance towards the goal of sustainable development.
‘Sustainability reporting’ is a broad term considered synonymous with others used to describe reporting on economic, environmental, and social impacts (e.g., triple bottom line, corporate responsibility
reporting, etc.). A sustainability report should provide a balanced and reasonable representation of the
sustainability performance of an organization – including both positive and negative contributions. Sustainability reports based on the GRI Reporting Framework disclose outcomes and results that occurred
within the reporting period in the context of the organization’s commitments, strategy, and management
approach.
This Sustainability Report corresponds to the complete Disclosure of Indicators of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI G3.1). In addition, all GRI indicators from the “Media Sector Supplement” (MSS) are taken into account.The report was checked by the GRI in Amsterdam.
The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) sees itself as an ongoing international dialogue which, through
the definition of performance indicators, includes a large number of stakeholders. The GRI operates
worldwide with the active participation of companies, universities, governmental organizations, as well
as non-governmental organizations from the fields of labor, social affairs, human rights and the environment. The objectives of reporting according to GRI are transparency, standardization and comparability.
The approximately 180 indicators from the fields of “societal-social performance”, “environmental performance”, “economic performance” and “product responsibility” were
extended in 2011 to include around 30 indicators related to the media industry. The GRI
Content Index checklist contains 534 individual questions.

1.1 Statement from our General Manager about the
relevance of sustainability to the organization
and its strategy.
Importance of Sustainability
A media company which stands for independent and critical journalism must
remain being critical as well towards its own business practices, values and
ethics. Through reporting while taking the maximum GRI “Standards of Disclosure” into account, Ringier Axel Springer Serbia is underlining its special
responsibility as a media company. Corporate accountability and performance
improvementare the drivers for our reporting. Journalistic independence, the
separation of advertising and editorial texts, the investments in the trainings
of our employees and the safeguarding of social and environmental standards
along the wood, pulp, paper, printing and recycling chain are just a few examples..
These strong titles are the basis for the company’s success and will therefore be strengthened and developed further.

C
ross-media extension – There will be further development in the digital
form of the strong print brands. For this reason, the company is adapting
its structure and organization in order to achieve optimal integration of its
print, online and mobile channels..
 T apping new business segments – Investments in digital companies
and new business models should provide the company with additional
sources of revenue and usefully complement the existing strong portfolio.
The overriding goal of this strategy is to ensure a long-term increase in the
company’s value. This will be achieved by means of profitable organic growth,
as well as a focused acquisition strategy. The company’s controlling system
has been designed on the basis of these goals.
We monitor the implementation of the Group strategy by tracking the development of financial and non-financial performance indicators.

guide us in bringing this vision to life. They can be summarized in 6 values:

The non-financial performance indicators make it possible to measure our
success in the areas of customers, offerings, processes, employees and
sustainability. For ecological and social performance criteria, the company
orients itself towards the indicators of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). The
non-financial control parameters are not reflected in the company’s income
statement, but are nonetheless key drivers of the company’s value-oriented
development. This way we are able to tackle an inconvenient ethical or environmental problem so much as the prospect of the world being ‘in the know’.
The reporting provides an early indication of whether strategic measures are
producing the desired effects, making it possible to quickly initiate appropriate
countermeasures when necessary
Our strategy is based on following factors:
 Print-based core brands – In all countries the organisation dominates
the tabloid market and has top newspapers and magazines in its portfolio.

To achieve the utmost customer satisfaction, Ringier Axel Springer Serbia is
tracking this by Ipsos Strategic Marketing Print Adex. This way we gain knowledge about the satisfaction and loyalty of our readers and advertising customers. This (customer retention) initiative has helped us to improve relationship
with both readers and advertising customers.

Ringier Axel Springer Serbia has implemented its “Code of Conduct”, which is a
binding guideline for all its employees. The Code of Conduct is binding also on
group level and applies to all subsidiaries of Ringier Axel Springer Media AG. It
supports, among other things, our journalistic credibility, our attractiveness as
an employer, our innovative response to customer expectations and in general,
the optimization of management processes.

the GRI “Media Sector Supplement”:
Belonging to one of the leading media companies in Central- Eastern Europe,
journalistic independence is an essential prerequisite of journalistic quality. As
readers habits change due to new ways of consuming news and entertainment
in the digital transformation, media companies like ours have two revenue
sources to finance quality journalism in the digital age: Paid advertisements
as well as readers who pay for journalistic content on the Internet as well as
on paper.
The digital transformation offers promising opportunities for Ringier Axel
Springer Serbia to become the leading digital and media company in Serbia.
We achieve this through the investment in new digital offerings and business
models and through the digital extension of our brands. We see opportunities

of paid content. Furthermore, the expansion of digital services in the form of

The company was established in 1996. Since 2010, Ringier Axel Springer
Serbia has been part of the newly founded media group Ringier Axel Springer
Media AG, which also operates in Poland, Slovakia and Hungary.
2.2 Primary brands, products, and/or services
Its portfolio includes numerous widely circulated print publications and the
most visited internet sites. Its brands, 24 Sata, ALO!, Blic žena, Blic Puls, NIN
and Auto Bild, are among the most widely circulated and the most read print
publications in Serbia.
Recognizing readers’ increasing need for information that can be obtained online, the company started investing intensively in the development
of sites and introduced the first integrated newsroom in the region. Blic.rs,
Pulsonline.rs and Zena.rs soon became the most visited online portals. Online
shop Nonstopshop.rs and the travel site Superodmor.rs, realestate site Nekretnine.rs have also achieved great success

There is continual communication with employees through many channels
on the activities and opportunities for interaction Ringier Axel Springer Serbia
follows an open communication policy towards its employees. Managers are
making themselves available, for communication with employees. The communication is transparent, on every level and happens through the intranet,
e-mail, one to one meetings etc. The company operations are based on creativity. Creativity is embedded within the goal of the company.

in Serbia. We stand for independent quality journalism and great entertainment. The basis of our success are our strong brands and our
competence in publishing. Our self-understanding working for this
company is based on our corporate values, which shall guide us in
bringing our vision as a company to life. In 2012 we implemented our
Code of Conduct, which are self-imposed norms, giving our employees
a framework for action in their daily work.
The Internal Control System (ICS) is an integral part of the Ringier Axel
Springer Serbia’ s corporate governance system and supports the

effectiveness of the specified risk control measures is monitored systematically. The internal control system has the task of ensuring that the risk

separation of advertising and editorial copy, the promotion of media skills

Remuneration of rights of use: There are different ways of acquiring
rights of use. The regulations to ensure the preservation and remuneration of these rights of use are accordingly diverse. They can be essentially categorized as follows:
Salaried employees: Salaried employees transfer the rights of use of
the results of their work (these are essentially works created in the context of their respective activity) to their respective employer. They receive
an equitable wage for their work, with which the transfer of rights of use
is as a rule also remunerated.
The Ringier Axel Springer Code of Conduct ensures the safeguarding of
journalistic independence in the creation of journalistic content.
Freelance (full or part-time) authors: : RingierAxel Springer Sebia also
purchases journalistic content from full or part-time non-salaried persons.
The acquisition of user’s rights is arranged through contracts and/or business conditions. Remuneration is in part individually negotiated.
Agencies: Insofar as content is purchased from agencies, the acquisition of rights is either negotiated individually or based on the agencies
specified terms and conditions. In case of doubt, the law of copyright
applies.
User content, letters to the editor, interactive services: our readers or users also generate content, which is included in the publications
of Ringier Axel Springer Serbia. These contents, which are usually without a commercial background, are unpaid interactive user behavior (e.g.
letters to the editor, comments on Internet forums or online portals).
Safety at work, as well as while working as a journalist: On the
journey between their workplace and home, Ringier Axel Springer Serbia employees are covered by the Employers’ Liability Insurance on the
basis of the law of Serbia. The same applies for workplace accidents at

Declaration of Human Rights. Our Company is committed to the application of
high ethical standard in all its publishing and journalistic activities, relationships
with business partners and competitors, and all relations with employees.

As a media company, both the aspect of exercising as well as the aspect of
supporting social freedoms play a central role in the freedom of expression.
Ringier Axel Springer Serbia is an independent media company and has defined its set of values, behaviors and leadership principles. Our Code of Conduct is a binding set of rules and expresses our conviction of how we should
behave in front of our different interest groups. Fundamental part of our understanding is that a free press is an essential element of our democratic
society. That is why we stand up for the freedom of the press. The freedom
of the press may come into conflict with other values that are protected by
the Basic Law and is not unconditionally guaranteed. In order to preserve the
freedom of the press from being relativized, the interpretation of the laws
restricting it have always to be guided by the significance of the freedom of
the press, which is in turn constitutive for democracy.
Any influence on content from advertisers, governments or political parties
restricts free reporting and is met with aversion by the reader. Independence
is thereby the first prerequisite for excellent journalism.
Our Code of Conduct: we are committed to applying high ethical standards
in all publishing and journalistic activities, dealings with business partners,

Ethical conduct is a central part of the culture of Ringier Axel Springer and is

In accordance with the legal definition in the “Law on Protection of Personal
Data”, personal data in Serbia means “any information concerning the personal or material circumstances of an identified or identifiable individual”.
The European Union has regulated the treatment of personal data since 1995
in the Data Protection Directive 95/46/EC of the European Parliament and the
European Council. Its implementation into national law is through the “Law on
Protection of Personal Data”. This implementation allows for different organizational forms of data protection in companies.
In accordance with this matter, we currently keep the internal data basis,
which we will duly register in the authorized register of the Republic of Serbia,
Commissioner for the information of the public importance and personal data
protection, as this is new practice in Serbia.

being aware of this is very important in this context. Violations of guidelines

The transparency regarding the origin of the paper our company uses to print
its newspapers is promoted through the publication of the suppliers of printing paper. As Ringier Axel Springer Serbia is purchasing its paper through

sustainability-related clauses such as the Forestry Standards that are also
verified by the company on site. These included visits by Axel Springer AG to
suppliers in Russia, Norway, Canada and Germany in 2010 and 2011. The
suppliers of printing services are also announced.The proportion of used paper in printing paper averages more than 85%. For newspapers the proportion
of used paper is 65%.
The efficiency in the use of printing paper is optimized by measures used to
reduce mill broke. Returns (= unsold copies of newspapers and magazines)
are reduced through the continually refined control of copies delivered to the
respective sales outlets.
NOTE: In the perspective, there is a inkling from municipalities according
which old newspapers and magazines should be collected from readers for
recycling.

Pines and spruces from the northern hemisphere are processed for the manufacture of printing paper. The suppliers of printing paper undertake to make
sure and to check that the timber raw materials that are used by no means
come from protected forestry areas.
Also in unprotected forestry areas, improper forest use can disturb the ability
of biodiversity to regenerate, e.g. by interrupting the food chains. This can
happen, for example, when insufficient amounts of old wood and dead wood
are available as habitats for insects, e.g. those that the Finnish white-backed
woodpecker lives on.

Transparency in the origin of fibers is an important prerequisite for securing
the biodiversity quality of printing paper made from fresh wood fibers.
The contracts concluded with paper suppliers include the “Forestry Standards”: 1) Harvesting more timber than will re-grow is prohibited; 2) Forestry
shall not endanger animal or plant species; 3) The paper manufacturer must
perform eco-controls as a purchaser of timber; 4) The paper manufacturer
must ensure that the necessary ecological knowledge is conveyed to personnel (for example, forest workers); 5) The paper manufacturer must take
the indigenous people (the Sami in Northern Scandinavia for example) into
consideration; 6) The paper manufacturer must keep the public informed of
the advances made and problems encountered in environmental protection

The timber harvesting areas of our paper suppliers and/or their pulp suppliers are situated in Germany, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Canada, the

the threat in some cases attributable to improper forestry methods. Specific

above-average qualifications. Salaries for men and women are based

In every country it operates in, the company competes for talented and
qualified employees. Against this background, all of the entry level salaries
and salaries at all locations are in part significantly higher than the local
minimum wage.

The company generates almost all of its revenue in Serbia. Supplies come

why the company has various activities in the field of social responsibility. This
is the case in different ways regarding our media, our readers and employees.
We care about the concerns of our readers and users. This is why we use the
strength of our brands to launch, actively participate and promote numerous
fundraising and humanitarian events.
At the beginning of 2013 Ringier Axel Springer Serbia has established the
“Blic foundation”. Through conducting of humanitarian activities (Heart for
children, HELP) Blic foundation raised more than 800,000 euros.

impacts, including the extent of impacts.
The indirect economic impacts that repeatedly attract attention include decisions
in the area of paper procurement. In Northern Finland, Norway, Canada, as well as
in the pulp production in Uruguay among other places, regional conflicts frequently
flare up, for example, concerning the use of land and forest resources. These often have to do with the competition between social (jobs) and ecological (biodiversity) interests. In such cases, the
Corporate Sustainability Office of Axel Springer AG, from whom we
purchase our paper, takes a detailed look on-site through talking
to trade unions, environmental organizations, scientists, representatives of the indigenous people as well as the tourism
industry and the government. The knowledge gained in
this process influences the decisions concerning supply
