Among the reasons most often mentioned
to explain the deplorable situation of School
Sanitation are:
Stakeholders
•Students
• inadequate training of teachers;
• absence of functioning water supply and
sanitation facilities, to enable students to
put into practice what they have been
taught;
• inadequate access to appropriate teaching
methodologies and materials;
• health or hygiene education is not a
separate examination subject and is at the
same time insufficiently addressed through
other subjects;
• inadequate supervision and monitoring of
sanitation and health activities at schools.

1
Teacher’s training and teamwork
– knowledge of the relation between water,
sanitation, hygiene behaviour and health;
– awareness about their importance as a role
model, resulting
in proper hygiene behaviour;
– skills to work with students in a
participatory way;
– commitment to improve their own hygienic
behaviour;
Introduction of School Sanitation
– formulate clear objectives to
ensure a school
sanitation programme,
– behaviour change oriented,
– plans should include budget and manpower,
– setting of objectives with all the parties involved
– interest from the school management
– agreement of at least 3 teachers to
take on
responsibilities
– involvement of students in
the school committee
for sanitation and hygiene
