City Council approved the
ratification of his appointment
to Chief of Police on Tuesday,
Sept. 17, 2013, during their
regular meeting.
Deputy Chief Kelly, 63, is
the first chief of police that the
City has appointed internally.
“I appreciate the vote of confidence and I assure you that
I will do the best that I can,”
Kelly told the council. “We
have a great police department,

equipment for Diamont, the
city’s newest K-9 officer.
The donations amounted to
$1,450, raised by members
of the Superstition Mountain VFW Post 9399, American Legion Post 27/Sons
of American Legion, Elks
Lodge 2349 and Superstition Search and Rescue.

along with Danielle Reynolds from the Friends of the
Apache Junction Board.
Roger Hacker, of the city’s
Revenue Development Program introduced the presentation as “more of a community celebration” than
a presentation of checks.
Hacker said “We’re celebrating five organizations
whose members got behind supporting a community need.” Apache Junction

Youth Struck by Car
Authorities report that juvenile
intentionally ran into the roadway
The Apache Junction Police
Department (AJPD) was responding to a juvenile disturbance complaint at the Superstition Shadows Park, 1091 W.
Southern Ave., around 6 p.m.
on Monday, Sept. 16. On the
way, a 911 call was received
that a juvenile ran into the road
and was struck by a vehicle.
The driver, a 61 year old male,
swerved but was unable to
completely bypass the youth.
The male juvenile was airlifted
to Maricopa County Medical
Center and his injuries were reported to be non-life threatening. The driver did not sustain

Bobby Leroy Henson (Bob),
71, passed away September 15,2013 at his home in
Apache Junction, Arizona.
Bob was born September
22, 1941 in Sandy Hook,
Kentucky to the late Ruley
and Belle (Wright) Henson.
He was a U.S. Navy Veteran
and moved to Apache Junction from Cincinnati, Ohio
in 1981. Beloved husband of
Rose (Frazier) Henson. Loving father of Christy (Kyle)
Henson Barlow of Cincinnati, Ohio, Bobby (Stephanie)
Henson and Ben Hauck, both
of Apache Junction, Arizona
and seven grandchildren,
Brandon and Kayla Barlow, Shandi, Jamie, Japheth,
and Josh Henson, and Tina
Hauck. He is survived by
two sisters Sue Carnes and
Ethel Stamper and numerous
nieces, nephews, distant family and close friends. He was
preceded in death by his siblings: Irene Sellhorst, Walter
Henson, Ellis Henson, Mary
Jane Henson, Dorothy McCormick and Betty Muse. A
celebration of his life was held

Greg and I met in college, 38
years ago where we began to
share what became a life full.
Full of travel, friends, fun,
and parenthood. Greg’s love
of nature was the center of his
favorite activities. He could
always be found hiking, kayaking, fishing, and gardening.
This love was easily passed
to our wonderful daughters
Tiffany (Wooten) and Mardee
(Cassady), who spent many
an hour, out of doors with
their Dad exploring, tarantula
hunting, or saving a snake
from the road. A devoted
Dad, Greg spent many years
cheering at swim meets and
talent shows, and later falling
head over heels in love with
our beautiful grandchildren.
Having retired from the dept
of corrections, Greg had time
to enjoy trips abroad and
around the US. We spent a
lot of time in Belize, which
had become Greg’s favorite
place to visit over and over.
He formed friendships easily there and loved the Belizean culture. Lately, Greg
took up riding motorcycles,
a hobby he had as a kid, but
newfound, he spent every day
possible on his Harley. Many
describe Greg as a funny guy,
a jokester, which is certainly
true, but I describe him as
my best friend and guide
who was always on my side
and brought me from a girl
to a grandparent, with just
enough teasing to keep me
humble. Arizona storms always brought Greg outside to
our back porch where he sat
and enjoyed the energy of the
thunder and the sweet scent
of the rain. On the evening
of August 30, 2013, during a
terrific Arizona storm, we lost
him. I am forever thankful for
the support and love given to
Greg in his last days. I miss

Earl M. Tate, Jr. (Sonny)
of Apache Junction, AZ; formerly of Centre County, PA
passed away unexpectedly at
his home on Sept. 11, 2013.
Earl was born July 23, 1949,
in Bellefonte, the son of the
late Earl M. Tate Sr. and Pauline Horner Tate. During the
Viet Nam War Mr. Tate served
two terms in the U. S. Navy.
Surviving Earl are two loving
sisters Carol Lee Tice (Frank)
of Centre Hall and Bonnie
Lou Tate of Bellefonte. He
is also survived by several
nieces and nephews and great
nieces and nephews; and his
wonderful, loving caregiver,
Jennifer Smith of Apache
Junction, AZ. In addition to
his parents he was preceded
in death by a sister Shirley
Eminhizer and a nephew
Randy Reed. Sonny will always be remembered for his
great love of Blue Grass Music and the wonderful gift of
his singing voice. Funeral
services will be private at the
convenience of the family. In

Beautification Project Underway Courthouse Garners More
Apache Trail High School thanks donors, seeks more help Awards, Praise from Visitors
Thanks to the generosity of
local businesses and Wolfpack supporters, the students, teachers and staff
of Apache Trail High
School (ATHS) will
begin their campus
beautification project
within the next few
weeks.
While waiting for the
cooler temperatures to arrive, students and staff members have been busy putting
together their project plan and
recruiting local businesses.
ATHS appreciates Vince and
his staff at Best Hardware for
donating a $200 gift card to
the school. Student council
members Alanis Rankin and
Brooklyn Tylicki are excited
to shop in-store or online for
the neccessary gardening tools
and supplies.
“We hope to make the exterior as beautiful as the interior
of our school” said Rankin
and Tylicki. The new beauti-
fication project goes hand in
hand with the school’s new
attitude of “Wolfpack Style.”
“We are working hard to portray ourselves as a community
and family-first school and by
sprucing up our campus this
message can be seen from the
outside, looking in.”
ATHS is known for their
sportsmanship and community
involvement. The school hosts
a variety of community events
each year, such as on-campus

blood drives and donations to
the Apache Junction Food
Bank. They even participate in a “Rock and
Roll Paint-a-Thon”
each October to
paint the home of
a local resident.
The ATHS Student Council is now
accepting donations
from Wolfpack families
and the local community.

I have been a resident of Apache Junction for 18 years and
live on N. Acacia Rd. I am writing this letter to strongly urge
the City Council members to not allow the application from
the Hitching Post/Dash Inn for a bull ring.
It is bad enough that in the winter months peace and quiet is
shattered in our area due to the loud music from another restaurant, which I personally find obnoxious. If Mr Mehmood
Mohiuddin’s application is approved then the noise problem
will only worsen.
We moved to Apache Junction and purchased our property
in a rural area for peace and quiet. This application should be
viewed with regard to the surrounding property owners. After all, there is the rodeo grounds which everyone will agree
is already underused. So why do we need another outdoor
bull ring?

I really liked the Guest Commentary by Roberto Reveles
(The News, September 16, 2013 edition). He is right on about
everything that he said. Fifty years ago, I was only 19, but I
remember going to some of the marches with nuns and priests
who believed in what Martin Luther King, Jr. was saying and
doing. Even coming from St. Louis I was shocked by the
bigots in the South. And he was a great leader for that time
and movement.
And today Roberto is correct about the situation in our
country. Life in this country is becoming hard for everyone.
When I first got out of college, I only owed $1000. Today the
average debt of a college graduate is around $34,000. And
many graduates do not earn that much and need most of what
they earn to live and forget about being able to pay off that
debt!
Most jobs do not come with heath insurance and other benefits. None of my step-children have heath insurance and
their children have to depend on the state for medical care! I
have been able to retire at 68 partly because I could not physically keep up the work. But life is very tight and all of my
social security goes to health insurance, medication and copays. But none of our children think that they will ever be
able to retire! And several of them will have most of their
social security check go to student debt! Well paying jobs are
disappearing faster than ever.
And to top it all off, our generation has all but destroyed the
environment, and we are doing almost nothing to change it.
At this point we need thousands of Martin Luther King, Jr’s
to lead us out of this mess!

Champion
Each year the League of
Arizona Cities and Towns
honors a few members of the
Arizona Legislature for their
work during the legislative
session.
The League’s highest honor
goes to those called the “Legislative Champions.” These
“Champions” are eight legislators (four Democrats and
four Republicans) who have
demonstrated their first commitment is to serving the
people of Arizona.
This year, Representative
Douglas Coleman (LD 16,
Apache Junction) is one of
four Republicans picked to
receive the League’s highest
honor of “Legislative Champion.” Apache Junction Mayor John Insalaco made the
presentation during last
week’s City Council meeting
(see story, page A-1).
The League’s legislative
agenda includes two basic,
core principles: Commitment
to local decision-making by
elected leaders, and a commitment to the revenue sharing system established by the
voters through a series of initiative measures.
“The state of Arizona is
prosperous only to the extent
its cities and towns are
strong,” says League Executive Director Ken Strobeck.
It is difficult to find a story
about lost treasure or a lost
gold mine in the Superstition Mountain area that is
not associated with a Saguaro cactus marker of some
kind. There are several mutilated old Saguaro cacti in
the wilderness area with a
variety of markings on them
that include crosses, arrows,
and slashes. Some actually
have stones embedded in
them pointing out certain directions. My first experience with a
marked cactus was when my
father and I hiked into La
Barge Canyon in the spring
of 1949. Near a place called
Horse Camp, just southwest
of Charlebois Spring, there
was a Saguaro cactus about
ten feet tall with no arms on
it. About half way up the cactus was a perfectly carved
cross. I ask my dad about the
cactus. He told me he didn’t
know a lot about it and had
heard several stories. Judging from my knowledge
about Saguaros today the
cactus couldn’t have been
older than fifty to seventyfive years. The cactus must
have been a seedling sometime between 1875-1900.
Oh yes, just in time for Jacob
Waltz of Lost Dutchman
mine fame to have carved the
cross. Basically that is the
story my dad told me about
the cactus at Horse Camp.
The last time I saw the Saguaro cactus it was down
and on it’s side dying. It had
been blown over in a severe
storm. The carving of the
cross on the cactus allowed
insects to get inside and
eventually kill the plant.
This was around 1979. Bud
Lane told me another story
about the Cactus. He said a

stepping into the job after
Jerry Monahan left to take
the police chief’s job with
Prescott.
Tom has more than 40 years
of law enforcement experience. He started out with the
Chicago Police Department
and later worked for the Drug
Enforcement Administration
(DEA) working in various
capacities and offices around
the world. He retired in 2006
as a special agent in charge
within the Chicago Field Division.
Kelly was then hired by the
City of Apache Junction as
the captain of the Criminal
Investigations Division. Last
year, he was promoted to the
position of deputy chief of
police, overseeing all operations within the police department.

disabled veteran who replaced a chihuahua 7 months ago. It
was his “service” dog, as well.
On September 11, 2013, between 5 p.m. - 6 p.m., someone
entered his home in the Chaparral Ranch Mobile Home Park
and stole his new dog (nothing else missing). She now is 9
months old, fawn and white, about 4 pounds. Anyone with

police department. It also reflects favorably on former
Police Chief Jerry Monahan,
our city’s officials and certainly the city voters— Because, as French philosopher
Alexis de Tocqueville said,
“In a democracy you get the
government you deserve.”
Most of all, the appointment
reflects favorably on Tom
Kelly himself. And besides,
how can you go wrong with
an Irish cop from Chicago?

And speaking of local public officials, Mr. “J.J.” Hudson is the mayor of Flippin,
Arkansas. During his term in
office, Mayor Hudson has
been found guilty of driving
while intoxicated and was
arrested and found guilty of
disorderly conduct in a separate incident.
The mayor is banned from
driving city vehicles but that
didn’t keep him from accidentally shooting through a
glass window in the police
chief’s office last week.
No one was injured, but
calls for the mayor’s resignation have begun to pour in
lately. The mayor offered no
explanation for the shooting,
however there have been no
reports of alcohol being involved at this time.
Maybe this guy is just stupid. And, as Alexis de Tocqueville once said... Well,
you know.

Thank you Pinal County Precinct Committeepersons
On July 17th, 2013, I issued a call to arms for Pinal County
to support the petition drive to place HB2305 (voter suppression bill) on the 2014 ballot. Well today we learned that approximately 146,000 signatures were submitted to the Secretary of State to 1) stop this odious bill from being enacted and
2) placing the bill on the ballot for the people to defeat next
November. When petitions were passed out to the Pinal
County Precinct Committeepersons, they did not hesitate to
take on the challenge of knocking on doors, setting up tables
and having community gatherings to collect signatures. What
seemed like a tremendous task upfront was quickly reduced
to just business as usual for the volunteers. It also became
very apparent that, We Are Not Alone!!!
I could not be more proud of my fellow Democrats for getting out and collecting signatures. However, we must recognize that this was in fact a non-partisan effort. Any and all
were eligible to sign the petitions regardless of party affiliation which makes this effort even more special. To think that
Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians’ and Green Party voters raised their voices to say no to this lopsided legislation
makes today’s accomplishment even more significant.
In as much as this was an outstanding display of our community coming together for a great cause (placing the bill on
the ballot), we still have a lot of work left to do. We must
defeat this legislation at the polls next year. If we continue to
show strength of character and resolve leading up to the elections as we have during the signature gathering process,
HB2305 will become a memory of bipartisan and an example
of what can be accomplished through mutual community
support.
Those of you who questioned my initial call to action to
defeat HB2305 and wanted me to present you with details of
the legislation, I hope you did just as I did and read it for
yourself. If you did and chose not sign a petition, then it is
great that you educated yourself and exercised your constitutional rights. However, for me and 145,999 other Arizonians
who chose to sign, I say congratulations for showing America that we do have common sense and are not afraid to use
it.
I agree. Cities and towns are
where the economic activity
of the state occurs and where
nearly 80 percent of the people of Arizona live. Doug
Coleman is one of the few
state representatives who
seem to realize that state officials serve the same constituents as do officials of
cities and towns.
Doug Coleman and his family are long-time residents of
Apache Junction. He’s also
retired from Apache Junction
High School where he taught
law and government.
Coleman got his start in
politics by being elected to
serve on the Apache Junction
City Council from 1991 to
1995. He then served 6 terms
as mayor from 1995 to 2007.
He holds the distinction of
being the first mayor ever reelected to a second term
(since incorporation in 1978),
and he was actually reelected
five more times.
And while I haven’t always
agreed with Doug on every
issue, he richly deserves the
award for being a “Champion.” Doug Coleman has the
best interests of Arizonans at
heart and he’s certainly been
a champion for the people of
Apache Junction.

cross in the cactus in the
early 40’s. I am sure there
are many stories out there as
to how the cactus received
its death sentence by man.
Another interesting Saguaro
cactus carving is on the trail
to West Boulder Canyon.
This appears to be a trail
marker of some kind depending on whom you are talking
to. This Saguaro has two
large arms and appears to be
about a hundred years old.
The marking on this Saguaro
cactus is an arrow that is
pointing downward just below the intersection of the
arms of the plant. I have always suspected this to be just
a trail marker used by somebody some fifty or so years
ago. I have been riding by it
since the late 1950’s when I
worked on the old Quarter
Circle U Ranch for William
T. Barkley. Even then the
marker didn’t look freshly
cut into the cactus.
It is interesting that the
marking didn’t damage the
cactus so severely that it
eventually died from disease.

demise. Now I had an old
friend name Monty Edwards
who was convinced the cactus served as a marker on the
Spanish Trail to the top of
Superstition Mountain. He
said this trail was used by “El
Gato,” who carved the Peralta Stone Maps. Monte’s
Spanish Trail was the Summit Trail to Summit 5024.
This same trail through upper
West Boulder was used to
bring strays off the top of the
mountain. Cattle would often
wander to the top of the
mountain looking for greener
range. Usually they ran out of
water up on the mountain and
would then come back down.
There is always an explanation for a trail in the Superstition Wilderness Area. If the
storytellers had been around
in the early 1850’s they would
have found Native American
trails all over the rugged Superstition Mountain range.
Did they mark Saguaro cactus? Who knows for sure? It

may have marked Saguaros
by pounding rocks in them
marking a certain direction.
There are many markers in
the Superstition Wilderness
Area and all of them have different stories depending on
whom you talk to. Four perfectly aligned large Saguaro
Cacti just outside of the wilderness area near the Apache
Trail are either freaks of nature or somebody a hundred
fifty years ago planted them
like this for a marker of some
kind. These cacti could be between a hundred and hundred
and fifty years old. The four
are no longer standing. I am
not sure whether their demise
was deliberate or natural. I
photographed them in 1976
and they were in very good
shape then. I was told at that
time the Saguaros were about
one hundred and fifty years
old. Recent research reveals
Saguaros grow much faster
than once believed.
The markers found throughout the Superstition Wilderness Area continue to fascinate
prospectors, treasure hunters,
researchers, and storytellers.
The stories are numerous and
they are widespread. Contemporary prospectors (18801983), cowboys (1876-2013),
the military (1860-1898) and
others who wandered these
mountains used a variety of
markers to guide themselves
from place to place in this rugged terrain.

Apache Trail Wolfpack Make It Three Straight

Last Friday evening the
Apache Trail High School
Wolfpack football team
took the field at Prospector Park looking to improve
on their 2-0 season. They
played host to the (Yuma)
Harvest Prep Academy Eagles (1-1), who have put-up
more than 50 points in each
of their contests so far this
season. The game set up to
be a shoot-out between two
explosive offenses and the
fireworks began shortly at
the opening kickoff.
Just four offensive plays
into the game, the score was
14 – 6, and it was clear both
teams were looking to make
the big plays. Fortunately
throughout the first half, the
Wolfpack found more of
those plays and committed
fewer mistakes and took a
66 – 34 lead into halftime.
A few key injuries and
overall exhaustion slowed
down the scoring in the second half, but the lead proved
more than enough as Apache
Trail improved to 3-0 with a
78 – 42 victory.

Invitational

Apache Junction High School
hosted the Lady Prospector
Volleyball Invitational this
past Friday and Saturday with
five competing schools.
On Friday in “pool play”
matches, Apache Junction defeated Washington 25-10, 2519, downed Santa Cruz 25-7,
25-11, toppled Shonto Prep
25-10, 25-11, and rocked Central 25-13, 25-7 to improve to
8-3 overall on the season.
The five teams were all
scheduled to return on Saturday for a “seeded,” doubleelimination tournament but
results were not available.
Also last week, the AJHS
girls defeated Skyline 30-28,
25-18, 24-26, 25-14 behind 11
kills from Brooke McCullen,
nine kills from Kaylee Marshall, 21 digs and two service
aces from Rachel Covarrubias, two kills and 13 assists
from Casey Reid, two kills,
10 digs and nine assists from
Sedona Aulik, three kills and
four blocks from Taylor Gering, and two kills by Sarah
Streibich.
The Lady Prospectors also
downed Coolidge last Thursday, 25-14, 25-23, 18-25, 2522 as Noel LaChapelle came
up with four kills.
This week, Apache Junction will host Poston Butte on
Monday, September 23, plays
at Florence on Tuesday, September 24, and plays at Williams Field on Thursday, September 26. For all three days,
the AJHS freshmen team plays
at 4:00 p.m., followed by the
junior varsity at 5:00 p.m. and
the varsity at 6:00 p.m.

The Lady Prospector junior
varsity team defeated Skyline

Wednesday, September 11 at
Prospector Park and both the
boys and girls finished third
overall out of four teams.
Queen Creek teams took top
honors in both the boys and
girls races, Williams Field ran
second, and Poston Butte ran
fourth.
In the boys race, Prospector
senior Omar Ewert finished
first overall, covering the
three-mile course at Prospector
Park in a time of 17:41. Ewert
ran thirty-eight seconds faster
than his nearest competitor,
Nick Foote of Queen Creek,
who was timed in 18:19.
