will celebrate the success of 60 locally
owned, privately held,
companies located in
Western Massachusetts.

The Super 60 program, now in its 20th
year, is a result of a program originally
called the Fabulous Fifty. The Fabulous
Fifty was a program established by
KPMG and brought to the Chamber by
Tom Burton, who was formally with
KPMGP and is now President of Hampden Bank. The immediate success of the
program demonstrated the desire of the
business community to recognize,
acknowledge, and celebrate its success
stories with the Western Massachusetts
community and the “outside” world. The

Super 60 Celebrates
Fastest Growing, Privately
Owned Businesses

he Affiliated Chambers of
Commerce of Greater
Springfield, Inc. (ACCGS)
will celebrate merit and distinction at its 2009 Super 60
Luncheon and Recognition Program on
Friday, October 23, 2009 at 11:30am at
Chez Josef in Agawam. This year’s Award
Luncheon is sponsored by Health New
England, Hampden Bank, Sullivan, Hayes
& Quinn, Nuvo Bank & Trust Company,
Zasco Productions, LLC, and ACCGS
Media Partner WWLP 22 News.
Now in its twentieth year, the program
celebrates the success of the fastest-growing, privately-owned businesses in the
region which continues to make substantial contributions to the strength of the
regional economy.
These companies were nominated in
two categories- total revenue and revenue
growth. Companies eligible for the program must be independent, privatelyowned businesses, be based in either
Hampden or Hampshire counties or be a
member of the ACCGS, be in business for
at least three full years and produce rev-
enues of at least $1 million in the last fiscal year.
This year’s revenue winners combined
for close to $1 billion in the 2008 fiscal
year, with average revenue exceeding $19
million for all participants and over $32
million for the top 30 companies. Three
companies also qualified for the Growth
category. 53% of the top 30 companies
revenue exceeded $20 million.
Growth for Winners; Over 25%
The average growth for this year’s
Growth category winners is over 25%
for all participants, and over 40% for the
top 30. 73% of the companies had
growth in excess of 20% and 23% of
companies had growth in excess of 60%.
Three companies also qualified for the
revenue category.
65% of this year’s winners are Chamber members with the following breakdown by affiliate: West of the River
Chamber – 9 honorees, East of the River
5 Town Chamber- 8 honorees, and
Springfield Chamber- 22 honorees.

Record-Breaking Golf Tournament to
Benefit Education

When and Why I joined the
Chamber
Mercy Medical Center, and then
SPHS, joined the ACCGS over 40
years ago and I personally became a
member of the Diplomat committee
in September, 2006, shortly after I
started in this position. I had been
working in Connecticut and wanted
to get to know the community I was
now working in.
Why I support the ACCGS
When I joined the Diplomat Committee, I felt welcomed immediately
and that my input was desired and
respected. At the events, I felt welcomed by all I met and had a chance
to interact with many people. I
quickly felt comfortable and welcomed as a member of my chosen
community. The Chamber made that
happen for me and I am grateful for
all they do to make the Greater
Springfield Area a welcoming community for all.

Springfield, held their 6th Annual
Golf Tournament, Swing “Fore”
Education, on Monday, August 10th
at Crestview Country Club.
What began as one of the hottest
days of the year proved to break
another record that day as well. In
all, the tournament raised over
$3,000 more in scholarship funds
than in years past. This would not
have been possible if not for the generosity of the tournament’s faithful

reprised its role as Presenting Sponsor, followed by United Bank as
Lunch Sponsor and Development
Associates as Dinner Sponsor. OMG,

2009 the Legislative Steering
Committee of the Chamber
was treated to a legislative speakers’
“double header”. Both Congressman
Richard Neal, and the President of
the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation, Michael Widmer, made presentations to the group.
Many of the more than 30 members in attendance came away agreeing it was one of the best meetings in
a long time; full of information and
insights not available any other way
but face-to-face.

Health Care & State Budget
Closely Related Subjects
Two major issues that came up
were federal health care legislation
and the state budget; no great surprise. Interestingly, both of these
have to be discussed simultaneously.
Health care is the single largest portion of the state budget and probably is in a similar position nationally.
The Chamber has always advocated
for bringing more people under the
health insurance umbrella for many
reasons, but at the same time has
advocated for changes to the system
in order to bring escalating health
care costs under control.
Currently, the many facets of
health care costs comprise 32% of
the state budget. In comparison, education local aid is 14%, non education local aid is 3.4% and higher
education is 3%. The growth of
these sectors from fiscal year 2001
to 2010 has been; 62% for health
care, negative 3.5% for education
local aid, negative 47% for non education local aid, and negative 37%
for higher education.

Agawam Forum Committee Holds Primary Debate for
Mayoral Candidates
On Thursday, September 17,
2009, the Agawam Forum Committee, comprised of the West of the
River Chamber of Commerce, the
Agawam Democratic Committee and
the Agawam Republican Town Committee, put on its first Primary Candidate Debate for Agawam mayoral
candidates. Robert F.L. MacDonald,
Executive Director of the Work
Opportunity Center and West of the
River Chamber of Commerce Board
member served as moderator.
The candidates for Mayor of
Agawam are incumbent Mayor
Susan R. Dawson, former Mayor
Richard A. Cohen, City Council Vice
President Cecilia P. Calabrese, City
Councilor Paul C. Cavallo, Derek J.
Benton, Peter A. Boadry, and Alan J.
Griffin.
The evening began with each candidate giving a brief statement detailing their goals and ambitions for
their candidacy. Dawson focused on
her accomplishments including two
years of a balanced budget, no town
or public school layoffs, and no
overrides. Calabrese expressed her
desire for quarterly mayoral reports
and revitalization of empty store
fronts citing the potential for local
artists to create an attraction.
Cohen, former Mayor of
Agawam, spoke of his experience
and desire to return to this position.
His hope is for growth in Agawam.
Cavallo spoke of the qualities it
takes to become a Mayor and listed
his recent accomplishments as a City
Councilor and School Committee
member. Newcomer Benton pledged
to work tirelessly on behalf of
Agawam residents and hopes to
improve the quality of life in the
town.

Boadry stated that many infrastructure repairs were needed and
more importantly, he felt the
Senior Center should not be doubled as a Community Center.
Boadry also stated that the CPA
tax should be voted on by the citizens of Agawam. Griffin focused
on the parks in Agawam stating
that too much cost goes into their
upkeep and suggested downsizing
to save valuable funds.
The program then turned to a
question and answer period for
candidates, with panelists asking
questions prepared prior to the
forum and also taking questions
from the audience. George D.
O’Brien, of BusinessWest, Laura
L. Merwin of MassLive and
Harold Shayer of the Agawam
Advertiser served as the evenings
panelists.
The program will be re-run on
Agawam’s public access channel
every Tuesday and Thursday at 7
p.m. from now until the primary
election on Tuesday, October 6th.
The Agawam Forum Committee will also be holding a debate
for Mayoral and School Committee candidates on Wednesday,
October 28th and a debate for
City Council candidates on Thursday, October 29th. Both will be
held at the Agawam Middle
School from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30
p.m.

East of the River 5 Town Chamber East Longmeadow/
Longmeadow Tournament Successful

committee was pleased to welcome
nearly 80 golfers and volunteers to
the 17th Annual East Longmeadow/Longmeadow Golf Tournament
held at Elmcrest Country Club.
Proceeds from the tournament
benefit the East Longmeadow Scholarship Program that includes the
Cheryl Reed Wallace Memorial Student Scholarships. Each year scholarship applicants are judged on
extracurricular activities, community
service and/or work experience, academic performance, application
essays, and future plans. East Longmeadow High School seniors
Michelle Grohe, Brooke Logan,
Jessie Schnepp, Michelle Fornie and
Livia Blanusa were the 2009 scholarship recipients. Funds from the program also support the Chamber’s
education and business programs in
both East Longmeadow and Longmeadow.
Greg Pytka of Hasbro and Chairman of the East Longmeadow Edu-
cation Committee surprised Tammy
with a plaque and flowers to thank
her for all of her work as Chairperson of the Committee over the past
five years.
Tammy took the opportunity to
thank members of the golf committee who worked hard to ensure a

1890, they are known to be the oldest fine art framer and art gallery in

cutting event was held on Tuesday,

made the cut for the list of the 2009
edition of America’s Best Colleges by
the U.S. News & World Report.
Western New England
College News
Western New England College has
committed to providing thousands of
dollars in financial aid to veterans
under the federal government’s new
Yellow Ribbon GI Education
Enhancement Program. The program, which launched August 1, will
allow qualifying veterans to attend
Western New England College and
Western New England College
School of Law tuition free.
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has awarded Western New England College a grant to provide
training in the state’s growing
“green” energy sector. The $153,000
grant will be used to develop a comprehensive green engineering program within the College’s School of
Engineering to prepare students for
jobs in this rapidly developing industry. The Western New England College program was one of only six
projects to receive funding out of 38
proposals submitted. The College
will contribute approximately
$100,000 to the project. The grant
will assist with the development of
new courses, facilities, and internship opportunities for Western New
England College students.
Additionally, The Western New
England College Departments of
Biomedical Engineering and Industrial Engineering were awarded a grant
of $125,000 from the National Science Foundation to develop multidisciplinary design projects that will
assist individuals with disabilities.
The goal of the five-year project is to
provide undergraduate biomedical
and industrial engineering students
at Western New England College the
opportunity to apply the principles
of design to the development of
assistive technologies. The design

projects will be performed in
partnership with a variety of
organizations that provide services such as clinical care,
employment services, and educational support for individuals
with disabilities. These organizations will include Shriners
Hospitals for Children in
Springfield, Goodwill Industries
of the Springfield/Hartford
Area, Inc., the Eastern Alliance
in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
(EAST), and the Western New
England College Student Disability Services.

the Super 60. The Super 60 highlights 30 of the largest, privately
held and 30 of the fastest growing
companies in the region. The companies are nominated by banks,
accountants, lawyers and self-nominations. Many use the Super 60 designation in their advertising as a
symbol of their success and as a
thank you to their employees who
help make it happen year after year.
The Super 60 list is an indication
of the health of the local economy.
This year’s list includes businesses
from the mainstream industries that
now lead our region in growth
including heath care, private higher
education, and financial services.
The list also has a large number of
local manufacturing companies that
have been the quarterback of our
region for many years and the new
knowledge based companies which
are helping to grow our local economy.
The ACCGS believes that in
today’s uncertain times that the

Mr. Snow’s customer service expertise was developed during the 20
years he spent with the Walt Disney
World Company. Today, he is a fulltime motivational speaker, trainer
and consultant who helps organizations achieve goals related to customer service, employee development, and leadership. Some of his
clients include American Express,
Johns Hopkins Medicine, the American Hospital Association, and Subway. Additionally, Dennis Snow will
be presenting a “Making Excellence
Business As Usual” seminar following the Super 60 program from 2 –
