welcome...
“The Forest of Dean is one of those really special places – a place steeped
in history and ancient traditions. Not only that, it's beautiful mixed
woodland, criss-crossed with a network of enticing tracks and paths,
make it a perfect place for walkers and cyclists to explore to their heart's content. And of
course it is wonderful for wildlife throughout the year. The forest is a place to celebrate the drama of
nature, from the first flush of green in spring, to the dark green shades of summer, the glorious autumn
colour and spare beauty of winter”.

for freedom
A leisurely ride on
horseback
An opportunity to ride through this
beautiful area on four brand new
horse riding trails that are connected
by quiet country lanes.
The recently launched ‘Forest of
Dean Greenways’ provide horse
enthusiasts the opportunity to
view the area on horseback.
All four of the Greenway routes have
been designed to connect to nearby
towns, villages, hotels, B&B
providers, visitor attractions and
equestrian centres to provide an
exciting new opportunity to see the
area on horseback.
For further information and to
download the trails visit

Walking with another
four legged friend
There are ample opportunities to
walk your dog and enjoy the
adventure that is the Forest of Dean,
well away from the traffic with
masses of space that will keep the
most energetic dog (and owner)
entertained! From ½ hour strolls to a
two hour hike, with picnic spots
along the way, neither you nor your
furry friend should want for more.
For the more serious walkers, or
those that want a challenge there are
an array of walking trails both
medium and long distance, including
the infamous Offa’s Dyke National
Trail, Wysis Way and the Wye Valley
Walk… both with stunning viewpoints
along the way.
And Relax
During all your daytime activities
don’t forget to relax and enjoy a
picnic, there are some truly amazing
spots to sit back and enjoy your
surroundings, whilst sampling a
locally sourced picnic (that you
prepared earlier) and perhaps a
cheeky glass of wine!
If you fancy learning how to cook
up a really tasty treat after all that
exploring, Harts Barn Cookery
School offers some fantastic
courses... you can even learn to
forage for your ingredients.

Learning & exploring…
There are lots of things to see and do in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley, you will
have to visit more than once to be sure to try and fit everything in!
The Forest of Dean & Wye Valley through the eyes of a
four year old…
I like searching for the Gruffalo and
finding where he likes to sleep,
although walking through the woods
we often see lots of sheep.
When we went to see Thomas I liked
that very much, especially when
there was a race and Thomas the
Tank won!

we race them in
There are always ducks to feed at
Mallards Pike Lake, they all swim up
fast and wait for the bread which my
nana makes! When we are there
you often see big gorillas in the
trees… but these are not real they
are just mummies and daddies trying
to swing through trees.
It’s nice to see Harry Potter’s owl
who likes to go twit twoo, and then
you can watch the big birds fly and
land on the lady’s arm. We have also
seen many tractors and an indoor
area too… where there is a big slide
to go down and lots of space to play.
When my tummy rumbles, mummy
gets out a big packed lunch or there
are lots of café shops which are full
of lovely things to eat and drink and
make me run real fast.
Ryan on one of his forest adventures
Father Christmas visits and last year
we went down the caves… but he
likes to visit lots of other places too
as he treats all children the same.
But you must be good to get a present
as he watches you all year round, so
when you visit the Forest next look
up in the sky and you may just see a
trail of smoke where he has just
flown by!
by Ryan, age 4
We have also been to places with
lots of animals and funny looking
things which I think are known as
scowles. We also played hide and
seek amongst a great big hedge and
then learnt all about the butterflies
which were fluttering around!

in roman footsteps
The Romans made their
mark on the Dean with
their iron ore excavations,
extracted from scowles to
be taken to Blestium (now
Monmouth) to be turned
into weapons and
Bloomery smelting
furnaces. They also built
roads, settlements, estates,
villas and temples, the most
famous of which was the
temple to the God Nodens
at Lydney Park.
This significant temple complex was
discovered alongside the best
preserved iron mines from Roman
Britain and was excavated by the
world famous archaeologist,
Sir Mortimer Wheeler and his wife in
1928 and the dig revealed a treasure
trove of artefacts, including little
stamps to put maker’s names on,
ointments, medicines and votive
offerings to Nodens, which included
the beautiful bronze statuette known
as the ‘Lydney Dog’.
In fact JRR Tolkein, the author of the
epic tale The Lord of the Rings was
responsible for tracing the history of
Nodens and results were published
in 1932 with the full report of the
excavation which can be viewed at
the Gage Library at Dean Heritage
Centre.

Dean Heritage Centre, The Lydney Dog
Nodens, a Roman-British deity
associated with healing the sick the god of healing, was worshipped
here but was never depicted in
human form and nine representations
of a dog, later to become known as
the Lydney Dog were found on the
site. It is thought that dogs were
symbols of healing in Roman times
due to their self-cleansing of wounds
by licking them.
Lydney Spring Gardens contain site
replicas of the famous Lydney Dog
and visitors in the summer months
can see the remains of the Roman
Temple and visit the museum.
Dean Heritage Centre is home to
many archaeological finds from
across the Forest of Dean, some of
which are Roman and is open all
year round.

BEST OF british
Full of history and truly British, our towns and villages make visiting a delight.
Take your time to explore the old mining villages in the Forest and the vibrant market
towns of Monmouthshire.
Chepstow
• Chepstow Castle cited to have the
oldest doors in Europe.
• Main entrance to the Lower
Wye Valley.
• Chepstow is home to the Welsh
Grand National and has been held
annually at the racecourse since
1946.
Cinderford
Coleford
• The name Cinderford has been
around since the 14th Century but
the town wasn’t actually there in
1840, the name reflects the area at
that time; a ford across the brook full
of cinders from Roman iron workings.
• Fantastic town trail with six artworks
that portray the past industrial and
cultural activity.
• Look out for the war memorial, a
statue of a local Freeminer.
• Robert Mushet perfected the
Bessemer process for the making of
steel in Coleford.

a church, the rest of the church got
demolished as it got too small for
the congregation.

runs from Coleford to Newland.
• Coleford is home to children’s
writer and illustrator Shoo Rayner.
Monmouth
• By day a great mix of boutique and

found of a Bronze Age boatbuilding
community, including three 100
feet long channels adjoining the
site of a now vanished lake.
• The only known example of the
16th Century ‘Monmouth Cap’, can
be seen at Monmouth Museum.

cliff, overlooking the River Wye
and has an array of gardens and
excellent riverside walks.

‘Merlin’ has been an essential part of the autumn BBC schedule for millions
of families for the past five years. The cast and production team have also
been welcome visitors to Puzzlewood with all five series having magical and
memorable scenes filmed there. It was fitting that at the 2013 National

Atlantis
Wizards Vs Aliens
Dr Who – Christmas Special
‘Atlantis’ is a new series from the
creators of Merlin. It has provided a
new hero for BBC viewers on autumn
Saturday evenings. Atlantis is inspired
by Greek mythology and follows the
adventures of Jason and friends as
they seek to discover the fate of
Jason’s father, encountering plenty
of villains and monsters on their
way. Puzzlewood provides an
atmospheric location in ‘A Girl By
Any Other Name’ as the forest of
Nysa home to the followers of the
god Dionysus. In the episode ‘The
Song of Sirens’ Hecules (Mark Addy)
visits the malevolent and powerful
witch Circe, who turns him into a
pig! Jason and Pythagoras encounter
the pig on their journey through
Puzzlewood and recognise him as
their greedy friend Hercules. A
second series has already been
commissioned.
‘Wizards vs Aliens’ is a CBBC
adventure with two young heroes
defending the world from the magic
eating aliens. With plenty of magic
and adventure this is one of the most
popular programmes on CBBC.
Puzzlewood is the site of an
encounter between the schoolboy
heroes and the Alien Nekross.
Matt Smith filmed one of his first
episodes of ‘Dr Who’ at Puzzlewood,
so it is fitting that Puzzlewood
should also be in his last episode.
The ‘Dr Who’ Christmas special sees
Perer Capaldi take over as the twelfth
Doctor.

Da Vinci’s Demons
The second series of the acclaimed
Da Vinci’s Demons will air on FOX
in 2014, created by David Goyer
whose other credits include the
Batman and Blade Trilogies among a
long list of other successful box
office hits. This series looks at the
fictional adventures of Leonardo Da
Vinci’s early adult life as an artist,
inventor, idealist and intellectual
genius. Puzzlewoods magical
scenery creates the look and
atmosphere of 15th century South
America.
