GO/CTE provides programmes of residential adult education for retired
people for fun: no exams: nothing too serious just activity based on the
philosophy that if you keep your mind alive with some dedication to lifelong learning and you add to this some calculated exercise, you will live
longer and enjoy a better life.
We try to engender an atmosphere where you can think you are amongst
friends. Our main programmes run for entire months. We think you need
this much time to get to grips with what is going on.
To all this we are now going to add PERSONAL TOUCH events.
Residential adult education for retired people for fun.
GO/CTE
Introduction
For nearly two decades we have been promoting unique
adult education holidays for mature people just for fun. The
philosophy behind it all is that life long learning and exercise
are essential elements to envelope if you are to lead the good
life you aspire to. Content is the key to what we do. We hope
that our programmes give you a good choice of activities to
choose from wherever they are.
But life is constantly presenting us with changing
circumstances and we have to adapt to them just to stay
alive. Our large programmes take a lot of preparation and
our resources are always being challenged. This being
so we are trying to provide facilities for small groups with
distinctive interests to work with contacts we provide to
create intimate small group holidays with a personal touch.
Such groups would work on shorter events with their own
leaders in personal touch with a named correspondent in
their destination. Their initial interest might be speaking the
appropriate language, studying music, painting together,
archaeology, history, folklore or anything else of interest to the
initiating group. Our contacts particularly in Italy can make
almost anything possible. This brochure will describe a few
but if you are reading this feel able to let your imagination run
free.
We will no longer advertise conventional travel products
though we are promoting our final traditional Italian
programme in the Abruzzo at Sulmona in May next year.
We hope you can join us there.

ABRUZZO - GO WITH YOUR OWN SMALL GROUP.
Having read this brochure you will see that we have
mainly presented you with holidays that recruit
relatively large numbers of people for our journeys and
programmes mainly in Spain and Italy. However our
speciality is Italy and over the years we have visited
almost every corner of the country.
During the last fifteen years no one has promoted adult education programmes like ours
but now an organization has produced something along our lines particularly tailored to
small groups. It is the kind of holiday that might just appeal to a few people. If you have a
small group interested in taking an activity holiday in Vasto, then please get in touch with
us and we will make all the necessary arrangements for you and your group.
Italia Sweet Italia is a specialist Italian tour operator based in Europe’s greenest region:
Abruzzo. Who, with their friendly team, will help you discover the true Italy and the Italian
lifestyle, as well as learn the fine Italian arts of cooking, painting, pottery and much more
surrounded by seaside, mountains and parks and wonderful scenery.
The activities they offer are located in the heart of the old village of Vasto, the best known
seaside resort on the Abruzzo coast and are based in the small but charming hotel the
Locanda dei Baroni which occupies an entirely renovated 17th-century palazzo.
Choose a Course...
Cookery
Learning how to cook Italian food is a secret dream for many people.
You can make this come true if you decide to take up one of their
cooking holidays. Here they concentrate on traditional Italian and
Abruzzese cuisine. You work with a local housewife directly in her
home with your group of friends using locally sourced products.
The dishes you’ll prepare come from the oldest and most authentic
traditional recipes.
Pottery
Learn how to be a potter: you will find out how to manipulate and
decorate pottery in an Italian style. Italian ceramists Michela and
Giuseppe lead this course for you. They teach you how to use a
number of different techniques to make interesting ceramics. You may
discover that you have creative abilities you were unaware of. You will
also get the chance to visit Castelli, a town where ceramic creations
have brought fame and fortune.
.4. Residential adult education for retired people for fun.
GO/CTE - Italy
Painting
Learn how to become a better painter with the help of
award-winning Italian artist Keziat to guide you through the
study of different painting techniques. Abruzzo’s amazing,
unspoiled landscapes are an ideal setting for those looking
for a truly Italian painting holiday. You will be learning how to
paint on a Trabocco, Abruzzo’s ancient fishing huts that rise
on stilts from the sea, in a winery surrounded by vineyards, and finally in the historic town
centre of Vasto with its picturesque architecture and a wonderful view of the gulf and of
the horizon.
Tailor-made Holidays
As well as cooking, pottery and painting classes, there’s a wide choice of other activities
to build into your holiday if you wish to widen its scope. Examples of the activities you
can have during your tailor-made holiday are wine tasting and Italian language, visits to
castles, wineries and olive oil mills, grape harvest, olive harvest, truffle hunting, cycling,
fishing from a trabocco (ancient fishing equipment typical of Abruzzo), milking sheep,
tomato sauce making, cheese making, day trips to Rome, Naples or other destinations,
and many more activities.
About Vasto
The town is set on a hill overlooking the Adriatic Sea,
and the Golfo d’Oro, or Golden Gulf, and Vasto Marina’s
fine sandy beaches - a 2 km drive. It was founded in
approx. 13th century BCE by Diomedes, according to
tradition; later made a Roman Municipality by the name of
Histonium.
The town’s main square is Piazza Rossetti in the historic centre. There are several outdoor
cafés, Palazzo d’Avalos which houses the archaeological museum and the municipal art
gallery, churches: San Giuseppe, Santa Maria.
The historic centre is definitely to be explored at a leisurely
pace, as is Loggia Amblingh perched at the edge of the
cliff, one that slopes across small vineyards and, eventually,
to the sea. From here or behind Palazzo D’Avalos, there’s
a shortcut that will take you to the beach in fifteen minutes
on foot. Its most famous dish is il brodetto alla vastese, a
fish and tomato soup; from the nearby hills, ventricina, a
paprika-sprinkled sweet meat; for red wine, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and Cerasuolo; for
white, Trebbiano d’Abruzzo - good local producers, especially in more recent years.

The traces of the Roman Sulmona re-emerged from the excavations in the Temple of
Hercules, at the foot of Mount Morrone where, according to legend, there would be the
ruins of the villa of Ovid. Research has unearthed a bronze copy of the representative
‘”Hercules at rest”, now housed in the Archaeological Museum of Chieti. It is a bronze
statue, a gift of a merchant, dated as coming from the third century BC, showing our hero
leaning on his left arm on a club from which hangs a lion’s skin: it is considered one of the
masterpieces of ancient sculpture. Beside the statue they found architectural materials
and votive images. Possibly identified as two elegant verses written by “OVIDIUS”. Again
rumour has it that these were inscribed on the marble by the poet himself.
Sulmona May 1st to 16th 2014
Join us for two weeks in Sulmona next Spring. The origins of Sulmona lie deep in our
history. We know it as the birthplace of the Latin poet Ovid after whom our hotel is named.
Rumour has it that it was founded by a refugee from Troy a man called Sulieman who was
a companion to Aeneas. Livy mentions it in his memoirs because during the Carthaginian
period the city remained loyal to Rome despite the brief successes enjoyed by Hannibal...
The mountains of Abruzzo which tower over the city and give it a unique atmosphere,
provide archaeological evidence to indicate the presence of Oppidium, one of the largest
fortified settlements in central Italy. The relevant area is located higher up on the current
site of the city. The current location of the city is between the two rivers Gizio and Vella.
The rivers are all that is left of a large lake situated here in prehistoric times and released
a long time ago by an earthquake. The Greeks referred to the area as “peline” - a muddy
place.
In Roman times, Sulmona was the location
of three municipalities and suffered several
times from the usual power struggles. Sulla
destroyed the place. Pompey located a
garrison here. Eventually he was removed by
Mark Anthony on instructions from Caesar.
However a date of historic importance
for the city is 43BC, the birth year of the
illustrious poet Ovid., the poet of love and
of Metamorphosis, then exiled to Tomi, in
Romania by the Emperor Augustus. From the
initials of the famous half-line “Sulmo Mihi
Patria Est” the city has taken the initials for
its coat of arms “SMPE”.

About Abano Terme and the surrounding Area
Abano Terme is just a few miles from Padua and there
are frequent buses between the two towns, a 35
minute journey. The buses stop just outside our hotel.
Approximately half of the bus services also stop in
Montegrotto Terme. Timetables are displayed on bus
stops and are available from the tourist information office.
For tourists travelling by rail, the principal station for the
area is called Terme Euganee and is located in the centre
of Montegrotto Terme (a bus ride from Abano). Direct
trains from Venice, Padua, Bologna and other Italian
towns stop at Terme Euganee.
Abano Terme has a large market which is held every
Wednesday.
Montegrotto Terme Like Abano Terme, nearby
Montegrotto Terme is made up of wide leafy streets
studded with hotels advertising their spa treatments.
One of Montegrotto’s attractions is the Museo del Vetro,
easily reached by taking the bus from outside our hotel,
and then a 10 min walk. The Museum features displays of
artistic glass from Murano. This museum also contains
some archaeological items discovered locally. It is
located in a farmhouse
near Villa Draghi. Villa
Draghi is a faded villa
in parkland just outside
Montegrotto, at the
start of an attractive nature trail. To get to the park and
the museum, take the Via Castello from Piazza Roma.
The museum’s opening times are limited (Tues-Sun
afternoons) so check at the tourist office before you set
out. There is also a pleasant small terraced café.
The market at Montegrotto Terme on Thursday can be
reached either by local bus or the little road train from
Abano Terme.

Experience the
Atmosphere in
Cremona
Read Sleeper by Paul Adam
Paul Adam is a thriller writer you have probably never heard of but his book is set in Cremona and features a violin.
On a pleasant June evening, four men gather at a comfortable rural home outside
Cremona, Italy, for their monthly indulgence in the playing of string quartets. They are
very old friends: a priest, a policeman and two luthiers (it is Cremona, after all, where
the building of stringed instruments has a very distinguished history). They share wine,
laughter, music and stories, then contentedly disperse. A few hours later, one of the
luthiers is found murdered in his workshop, stabbed with one of his own chisels.
The shop has been searched, not violently but thoroughly, yet nothing seems to be
missing. The luthier was a well-liked elderly man, and his murder is extremely puzzling.
The only clue is that he seems to have been recently wrapped up in the quest for a
rare, and quite possibly apocryphal, violin. The policeman calls in the second luthier for
consultation and together they set out on a trail that takes them to Milan, Venice and even
the north of England.
I enjoy a mystery that introduces me to a new area of expertise. Adam immerses us in the
world of fine violins, giving a wealth of specialized information without ever appearing to
lecture, or straying from the story. Everything fits.
Our narrator -- the investigating luthier -- is an extremely likeable man, intelligent, warmhearted, with strengths and flaws that combine to show his humanity. We are on his
side from the beginning; the author helps us feel his distress and confusion at the loss
of his old friend, and we glimpse older pains, some self-inflicted, as well as the joys and
satisfactions of a life well lived. If you read through the book you get an understanding of
both Cremona and the satisfaction that attaches to the art of violin making.
