FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
Dear Friends,
The 2007–2008 season was a year of continuing transition and transformation for Carnegie
Hall, one in which the Hall both reaffirmed its historic role as home to the world’s most
esteemed artists and ensembles, and took bold steps forward in expanding its burgeoning role
as an ambassador for great music on an international scale. It is often said that music is a global
language, and education, of course, is the key to speaking and understanding it. For this reason,
music education, in the broadest sense of the term, continues to inform more and more of our
strategic thinking at Carnegie Hall, stimulating the integration of our concert and educational
programming, and animating our wide-ranging efforts to engage audiences more fully in the
artistic process, to spark the imaginations of young children, and to develop the next generation
of professional musicians.
This Annual Report is a written testament to the results of this strategic thinking, manifested
locally in exciting new artistic projects such as Berlin in Lights, our first major international
music festival, and in new initiatives like The Academy—a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music
Institute in partnership with the New York City Department of Education—which promises to transform the state of music
education in this country. It is also demonstrated in national outreach programs such as Communities LinkUP!, which delivered our acclaimed curriculum to students in 10 states across the country, and in international outreach initiatives such as the
Cultural Exchange program, which brought together students and teachers from New York City public high schools with their
peers in Istanbul. These are but a few examples of the many efforts undertaken with great success and to a great purpose last
season, as Carnegie Hall works to make a real difference in the lives of as many people as possible through music.
This successful continued transformation of Carnegie Hall into a position of leadership in the 21st century can be attributed
to the dedication and commitment of numerous individuals. First and foremost, I would like to thank you, our loyal audiences
and donors, for your adventurousness in exploring new artistic and educational experiences, and for your deeply appreciated
generosity in supporting them. Our success is truly yours, and I hope that you take great pride in knowing that we could not
have achieved the accomplishments detailed on the following pages without you. Second, I would like to thank Executive and
Artistic Director Clive Gillinson, whose vision has enabled Carnegie Hall to chart an exciting new course of growth and whose
leadership has raised the level of cooperation and camaraderie among cultural institutions in New York City to a level rarely
achieved before. Third, I would like to thank my colleagues on the Board of Trustees, whose courage to take informed risks and
whose commitment to pursue the extraordinary were crucial to Carnegie Hall’s successful undertaking of ambitious projects
such as Berlin in Lights and The Academy. Finally, I would like to thank the dedicated staff of Carnegie Hall, who have been so
responsive to change and who have risen to the occasion time after time in the face of unexpected developments.
Each season marks milestones for members of the Carnegie Hall family who have dedicated themselves to this great institution over the years and made it an important part of their lives. It is with heartfelt gratitude that we salute departing Trustees
George David and David Zinman, and Trustee Fellow Timothy P. Flynn for their years of exemplary service, and welcome new
Trustees Gregory T. Durant and Frederick J. Iseman, and Trustee Fellow Robert F. Arning.
We also express deep appreciation to Bank of America—which returned as Carnegie Hall’s season sponsor for the third
consecutive year in 2007–2008—and to all the other corporations, foundations, and public officials who have supported
Carnegie Hall more staunchly and generously than ever in the past year. Their foresight and yours have allowed New York’s
premier concert hall to embark on an era of exceptional growth and renewed artistic vitality. Although Carnegie Hall and other
non-profit institutions currently face challenging economic times, we remain committed to building a bright future for the Hall
and for music. I am confident that, together, we will be more than equal to the challenge.
Sincerely,
Sanford I. Weill
Chairman of the Board

2007–2008 Annual Report
FROM THE EXECUTIVE AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Dear Friends,
Carnegie Hall’s 2007–2008 season marked a year of exciting growth for our institution, built upon
the quality, diversity, creativity, and extraordinary history for which the Hall has long been known.
The season featured more than 200 performances by the world’s greatest artists in all genres—
classical, jazz, world, folk, and pop—collectively representing the best in music today. Audiences
enjoyed superb performances throughout the year: sensational Opening Week concerts by the
Lucerne Festival Orchestra; new musical journeys with Perspectives artists Valery Gergiev, Bobby
McFerrin, and Yefim Bronfman; and fascinating explorations with composer-pianist-conductor
Thomas Adès, holder of The Richard and Barbara Debs Composer’s Chair.
Carnegie Hall presented larger-scale programming in 2007–2008 than ever before, broadening
its artistic horizons and creating a model for future seasons. We increasingly developed stronger
programming connections across our three halls and integrated education and community
programs into our major artistic concepts.
We also formed numerous artistic partnerships with leading New York City cultural institutions, creating major programming
initiatives together that could never have been achieved by any one artistic institution on its own. Through these partnerships,
allied to the centrality of our important education and community work, Carnegie Hall significantly extended its reach to new audiences, furthering its work in broadening the role and relevance of the arts in the lives of the people of New York City and beyond.
This new approach to programming was best exemplified last season by Carnegie Hall’s first major international festival, Berlin
in Lights, which created a voyage of discovery for New Yorkers across a broad cultural landscape and attracted international
interest and recognition. Over 17 days in November, with concerts, films, cabaret, architecture, photography, and much more,
Carnegie Hall and its 14 festival partners created a vibrant snapshot of Berlin, a world-class city that has regenerated itself
through culture. Berlin in Lights would not have been possible without the generous leadership gift, provided through the
Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation, of Berlin native Mrs. Stephen M. Kellen.
Many people commented that The Rite of Spring Project in Washington Heights was perhaps the most inspiring and memorable
of the festival’s events. This creative learning project, involving hundreds of New York City public school students, vividly demonstrated the power of engaging young people with the arts and provided an opportunity for students to create and perform
their own work alongside world-class musicians. The project, mounted in collaboration with the Berliner Philharmoniker, was
one of hundreds of music education programs presented last season by The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall, embodying
its mission of making extraordinary music available to as many people as possible.
The Academy—a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute in partnership with the New
York City Department of Education—was another important collaboration that continued to blossom in 2007–2008. At the end
of its first full season, the program graduated its first class of fellows, young professional musicians who remain committed
not only to artistic excellence in their careers but also to service to their community. This successful program has received
national attention, promising to serve as a template for others who support young musicians as they grow into their roles as
musician-citizens of the 21st century.
Particularly following this extraordinary year, I continue to be profoundly grateful for the dedication of Carnegie Hall’s extended
family: performers, audiences, trustees, supporters, volunteers, and staff—so many people who work tirelessly to further
Carnegie Hall’s mission. Together, we continue to build on the great history of Carnegie Hall, creating diverse programming that
attracts a wide variety of audiences and bringing the extraordinary joy of music to ever more people as we further define the role
of Carnegie Hall in the 21st century, ensuring that it remains as central to the future of music as it has been to the past.
We look forward to welcoming you to Carnegie Hall during the 2008–2009 season for another year of artistic exploration and
music making at its finest. We especially thank you for your support in these challenging times, when the contribution the arts
can make to people’s lives is more important than ever.
Sincerely,
Clive Gillinson

Concert Season
Carnegie Hall launched its extraordinary 117th season with a five-day residency by
the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, including a festive Opening Night Gala marking the
prestigious ensemble’s North American debut. With seven performances on all
three Carnegie Hall stages, musicians performed as the full Lucerne Festival
Orchestra and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in concerts led by David Robertson,
Pierre Boulez, and Pierre-Laurent Aimard, as well as in various chamber music
configurations.
The glow of Berlin in Lights, Carnegie Hall’s ambitious first international festival,
shone brightly in November 2007, enticing audiences to discover the vibrant city
that is Berlin today. With more than 50 events at Carnegie Hall and at partner
venues throughout New York City during the month of November, the celebration
culminated in an eight-day visit from Sir Simon Rattle and the incomparable
Berliner Philharmoniker.
Each of the season’s three Perspectives artists—conductor Valery Gergiev,
pianist Yefim Bronfman, and vocal innovator Bobby McFerrin—shared their rich
and varied musical experiences, curating collections of concerts that invited music
lovers to explore their distinct interests and visions. From concert performances
of complete acts from Russian operas with Gergiev and the Kirov Orchestra and
Opera Chorus, to world premieres of works by Jörg Widmann and Marc-André
Dalbavie performed by Bronfman and friends, and an improvised opera involving
audience participation under the guidance of McFerrin, each event provided the kind
of distinct experience that audiences have come to associate with Perspectives.
Carnegie Hall showcased the compositional, conducting, and pianistic talents
of Thomas Adès, holder of The Richard and Barbara Debs Composer’s Chair.
Adès, whose works were programmed throughout the season, also used this
platform to champion other contemporary composers, as was evident in his
dynamic performance of Gerald Barry’s visceral opera The Triumph of Beauty
and Deceit with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. Adès’s residency
underscored Carnegie Hall’s ongoing commitment to the future of music in
a season with performances of nine new Carnegie Hall–commissioned works,
11 world premieres, and three Making Music concerts dedicated to leading
composers, including Adès.
The 2007–2008 season featured an abundance of great music, continuing
Carnegie Hall’s proud tradition of presenting the best international artists and
ensembles, and nurturing new talents. A diverse lineup of more than 200
remarkable performances, ranging from orchestral concerts and solo recitals
to jazz, pop, world, and folk, reinforced Carnegie Hall’s reputation as a premier
musical destination and the finest concert hall in the world.

BERLIN IN LIGHTS
In November 2007 Carnegie Hall presented Berlin in Lights, its first major international festival. With more than 50
performances and events presented at Carnegie Hall and partner venues throughout New York City, Berlin in Lights
invited audiences to explore the culture of a fascinating city, reborn since the reunification of Germany. A multitude
of offerings that encompassed music, film, art, and architecture unfolded over the course of 17 days, creating a vivid
snapshot of Berlin—a city that has largely reshaped its identity through culture.
Wonderful musical performances were at the center of Berlin in Lights, beginning with an eight-day residency by
Sir Simon Rattle and the stellar Berliner Philharmoniker. Electrifying concerts by Gustavo Dudamel and the Simón
Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela, orchestral and chamber music performances, neighborhood concerts, and
extensive education programs that engaged hundreds of students in creative learning projects collectively ensured
that both the festival and world-class music making reached wide and far across the city. Creative collaborations
with a variety of organizations—The American Academy in Berlin, Center for Architecture, German Consulate
General in New York, Goethe-Institut New York, Guggenheim Museum, The Museum of Modern Art, Neue Galerie
New York, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, Thirteen/WNET New York, WNYC, and the World Music Institute—
extended the reach of Berlin in Lights with partner presentations, establishing an especially rich context for the
festival’s theme.
Berlin in Lights enjoyed both an enthusiastic audience response and widespread critical acclaim. The festival
encouraged Carnegie Hall’s regular concertgoers to explore an array of art forms, while newcomers to the Hall
joined in the discovery of Berlin’s numerous cultural treasures. For the many Berliners in New York, it was uplifting to see their great sense of pride as their city was recognized as one of the most important cultural
centers in the world.
The success of Berlin in Lights continues to provide inspiration to Carnegie Hall as it looks forward to presenting
future festivals that develop new and compelling journeys of discovery for its audiences.

The
Weill Music Institute
at Carnegie Hall
In 2007–2008 The Weill Music Institute continued to build upon Carnegie Hall’s mission
of making the transformative power of great music accessible to as many people as
possible through programs that served more than 115,000 children, students, teachers,
parents, young professional musicians, and adults in the New York City metropolitan
area, across the nation, and around the world.
The Weill Music Institute integrated extensive educational and community programs
into Carnegie Hall’s concert programming this season. The grand finale of Carnegie
Hall’s Berlin in Lights festival in November was The Rite of Spring Project, two largescale creative learning projects that engaged hundreds of students from across the
city in the fall of 2007, culminating in performances with Sir Simon Rattle and the
Berliner Philharmoniker at The United Palace Theater in Washington Heights.
Designed to awaken students’ interest in the arts through active participation, the
project involved eight weeks of rigorous music and dance rehearsals centered
on Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, and fostered transformational experiences for
students, musicians, and audience members alike. In addition, the Carnegie Hall
Neighborhood Concert Series extended the reach of Berlin in Lights to all five
boroughs of New York City by offering 10 free Neighborhood Concerts with artists
including the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela,
and the Nevzat Akpinar Ensemble in a variety of community venues.
Carnegie Hall’s school-based programs reached more than 50,000 local students.
Close to 18,000 elementary school students filled Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage
in May to participate in the highly successful LinkUp! program. Hundreds of local high
school students explored the musical traditions of Turkey at the Distance Learning
Event in Zankel Hall in the fall and at Citi Global Encounters performances in Zankel
Hall in the spring. The Citi Global Encounters concerts brought together classrooms in
New York City and Istanbul through innovative distance learning technology for a yearlong program that used music to teach about global history and cultures.
The Weill Music Institute also reinforced its commitment to training the next generation of great musicians by presenting seven Professional Training Workshops this year,
linking leading performers and composers from around the world with students at the
conservatory and post-conservatory levels. Master artists who presented workshops
this season included Leon Fleisher, Emanuel Ax, Marilyn Horne, Ton Koopman, Fred
Hersch, David Krakauer, and Carnegie Hall Perspectives artist Bobby McFerrin.

THE MCGRAW-HILL COMPANIES CARNEGIEKIDS
(Preschool and Early Elementary School)
Completing its 12th season in 2007–2008, The McGraw-Hill
Companies CarnegieKids served as an introduction to music
for children in pre-kindergarten through grade one. Hosts and
groups of musicians led children through 45-minute interactive
sessions of music making, stories, singing, movement, and
listening. The fall 2007 term introduced audiences to Music
Makers: The Brass Family; the spring 2008 term introduced
them to the percussion family. Approximately 6,700 children and
adults attended these live events in Carnegie Hall’s Kaplan Space.

THE RITE OF SPRING PROJECT
The grand finale of Carnegie Hall’s 17-day Berlin in Lights festival
on November 17 and 18 at The United Palace Theater also
marked the completion of The Rite of Spring Project, an eightweek educational program involving hundreds of New York City
public schoolchildren that began in classrooms in September
2007. The project’s two components—The Dance Project led by
choreographer Royston Maldoom, and Songs: Ritual Rhythms,
led by vocal coach Mary King and composer Catherine Milliken—
explored Stravinsky’s ballet The Rite of Spring through movement
and music with New York City students, many of whom were
encountering dance and classical music for the first time.
The United Palace Theater performances opened with the premiere of an original musical composition for voice and percussion
based on themes from Stravinsky’s renowned work, developed
and performed by 80 high school students. Approximately 100
students then danced to The Rite of Spring, performed by the
Berliner Philharmoniker under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle,
with striking and colorful choreography by Mr. Maldoom.
The Rite of Spring Project was presented by The Weill Music
Institute at Carnegie Hall in partnership with Zukunft@BPhil,
the Berliner Philharmoniker education program.

MUSICAL EXPLORERS
(Elementary School)
During its fifth season, Musical Explorers invited students in
grades two and three to explore two of the four instrument families
of the orchestra through songs, activities, and listening games.
Teachers attended a Professional Development Workshop,
gaining familiarity with the program curriculum and student
workbook. Additional tools in the Musical Explorers curriculum
guide included an accompanying CD and a soprano recorder.
Students were invited to attend two concerts in Zankel Hall
during the 2007–2008 season. Musical Explorers introduced
3,850 students and their teachers to the brass family of
instruments during the fall term, and introduced 3,850 students
and educators to the percussion family in the spring term.

(Elementary School)
PERELMAN AMERICAN ROOTS
(Middle School)
LinkUP! completed its 23rd season in 2007–2008, with area
students in grades four through six focusing on the musical
concept of theme and variation. LinkUP! united the classroom
with the concert hall by inviting students to sing and play the recorder in spring performances at Carnegie Hall, where students
employed the skills and musical knowledge they learned during
the school year through the LinkUP! curriculum. Each student and
teacher received an activity book, an audio CD, a soprano recorder,
and a ticket to the final concert in Stern Auditorium / Perelman
Stage. In May, 17,500 students and teachers from New York
City and the tri-state area attended one of eight final concerts
featuring the Orchestra of St. Luke’s led by John Morris Russell.
During the 2007–2008 season, more than 500 students in
grades seven and eight explored Jazz in New York City through
the exciting interdisciplinary Perelman American Roots program.
Teachers participated in a Professional Development Workshop,
received a standards-based classroom curriculum, and had
classroom visits throughout the school year by a Weill Music
Institute teaching artist. In preparation for the program’s final
April concert, participating students updated the lyrics to
George Gershwin’s “They Can’t Take That Away from Me” by
incorporating elements from their own lives that they would
like to change. The vocalist Sachal Vasandani and his ensemble
performed the students’ new songs, alongside other jazz repertoire, at the final concert in Zankel Hall.

Completing its eighth year, Citi Global Encounters brings the
music of different regions of the world to New York City high
school social studies and music classrooms. In 2007–2008
this interdisciplinary program focused on the country of Turkey.
Throughout the winter and spring 2,200 students from 40 high
schools throughout the city learned about the folk music
traditions and culture of Turkey in preparation for final concerts
in Zankel Hall, which featured Turkish singer, composer, and
scholar Latif Bolat. A free Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concert,
also featuring Mr. Bolat, was presented on May 31 at the

DISTANCE LEARNING EVENT
(High School)
During the 2007–2008 season The Weill Music Institute
selected eight New York City and eight Istanbul classrooms from
Citi Global Encounters to participate in the Distance Learning
Intensive program. Students from both cities studied a lessonbased curriculum and interacted with one another throughout
the year as part of an online community. A joint December
concert in Zankel Hall used distance technology to simultaneously link Istanbul students with their New York City peers
while musicians from each region performed. Turkish clarinetist
Hüsnü Şenlendirici traveled to New York to perform with the
New York Gypsy All-Stars, and New York’s Claudia Quintet
traveled to Istanbul to perform in this dual, transatlantic concert,
broadcast live in both cities. The high-energy program featured
traditional Turkish music and American jazz, focusing on the
musical elements they share, including an emphasis on syncopation, improvisation, and melodic ornamentation. There were
also opportunities for the students to pose questions to both the
musicians and their fellow students across the ocean.

In its fifth season the National High School Choral Festival
selected four choirs from across the country by audition to
participate in a yearlong educational program guided by Dr.
Craig Jessop. The program included school visits by Dr. Jessop,
a Professional Development Workshop for participating choir
directors, and four days of rehearsal in New York City culminating
in the final concert at Carnegie Hall with the Orchestra of St.
Luke’s. The 2007–2008 festival featured choirs from Baltimore,
Raleigh, Santa Barbara, and State College, Pennsylvania. At the
concert choirs performed repertoire separately under their own
conductor before combining to perform Brahms’s A German

FAMILY CONCERTS
Carnegie Hall’s one-hour, weekend afternoon Family Concerts offer children ages 5–12 the opportunity to experience the joy of
attending a live musical performance. Each year Family Concerts in Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage and Zankel
Hall showcase classical, jazz, and world music ensembles. Fun and engaging pre-concert activities allow children to meet artists
one-on-one for an up-close look at the instruments. In its 13th season of providing families with exceptional entertainment opportunities, Carnegie Hall presented 10 Family Concerts. Highlights included performances by Sweet Honey In The Rock in January, Bobby
McFerrin in February, Orchestra of St. Luke’s (featuring a Symphony in Space themed performance) in April, and Ensemble ACJW’s

THE WEILL FELLOWS
In conjunction with Citi Global Encounters, 10 Turkish school
teachers whose students interacted with New York classrooms
through the Distance Learning Intensive program, traveled to
New York City from May 22-30 for a week of professional development and immersion in American culture as part of The
Weill Fellows Program. During this time they were involved in
multiple areas of cultural exchange: educational, professional,
artistic, and personal. They participated in workshops and panel
discussions that explored sensitivity issues that arise in cultural
exchange programs as well as strategies for bringing music into
the classroom. The fellows also visited local public schools and
attended events throughout the city.
OTHER PROGRAMS
FROM THE TOP
A project of WGBH, From the Top, and Don Mischer Productions in partnership with Carnegie Hall, PBS’s From the Top:
Live from Carnegie Hall showcases the musical talents, offbeat humor, and compelling stories of America’s best young
classical musicians. Young performers are invited to be part of
this engaging television series, taped before live audiences in
Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall. Each half-hour program, hosted by
celebrated pianist Christopher O’Riley, includes performances,
light-hearted conversation, and a behind-the-scenes look into
the young musicians’ everyday lives. From the Top’s first
season, which debuted in April 2007, was nominated for three
Daytime Emmy Awards. The second season of From the Top
kicked off in June 2008.
PRINCIPAL’S DAY
On April 7, Carnegie Hall hosted 90 New York City public school
principals and members of the Integrated Curriculum and
Instruction Learning Support Organization (ICI-LSO) for a day of
professional development, concluding with a performance by
renowned pianist Emanuel Ax.

SUNTORY HALL PARTNERSHIP
Marking the centennial year of Olivier Messiaen’s birth, Carnegie Hall explored the French composer’s life and work with two February Discovery
Days. On February 15, David Robertson led the Saint Louis Symphony
Orchestra in Messiaen’s Turangalîla-symphonie. A multimedia presentation was integrated into the concert experience, and Maestro Robertson
offered insightful comments on Messiaen’s masterwork. Jeremy Geffen,
Director of Artistic Planning at Carnegie Hall, interviewed composer
and conductor Pierre Boulez—a close colleague and former student of
Messiaen—at a special Discovery Day on February 24, an event that
also included panel discussions, a film screening, and a performance of
Messiaen’s Visions de l’Amen for two pianos.
On April 19 and 20 CarnegieKids made its international
debut with four sold-out performances at Tokyo’s
Suntory Hall, introducing children and their families
to the brass family of musical instruments. Professional
violinist Airi Yoshioka hosted the program, which
featured music making by trumpeter John Walsh, horn
player Jill Van Nostrand, trombonist Chris Washburne,
and tuba player Morris Kainuma. Announced in
September 2006, the new partnership between Carnegie
Hall and Suntory Hall cultivates an international bond by
integrating selected educational programs of The
Weill Music Institute into the Japanese venue’s programming. Future plans include the presentations of
Carnegie Hall’s Professional Training Workshops for
young musicians in coming seasons.

The Academy
A Program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School,
and The Weill Music Institute in Partnership with
the New York City Department of Education
After a successful launch in January 2007, The Academy, a two-year fellowship
program for post-graduate musicians, entered the second phase of its pilot program
in 2007–2008 with a complete slate of performances and a group of 34 fellows. As
Ensemble ACJW these fellows came together for 21 concerts at Carnegie Hall and
The Juilliard School. Each fellow also partnered with a New York City public school,
teaching students from kindergarten through grade 12 everything from how to play
instruments to general musical knowledge.
The combination of performance opportunities and intensive hands-on teaching
experience reflects the belief of The Academy that the artist of tomorrow will
require both the ability to perform at the highest level and the capacity to give back to
the community as an educator. The three-day residencies and public performances
that the fellows conducted on the Skidmore College campus in Saratoga Springs
further demonstrated the commitment to community involvement. Fellows engaged
Skidmore College students and the town itself by presenting “informances”
(informal performances) in non-traditional locations around the campus, attending
college classes, visiting a local high school, and reading compositions by students in
the local youth orchestra.
Second-year fellows had the opportunity to conceive and develop group projects that
combined their excellent musical talents with education and community advocacy.
Children’s Music Campaign NYC, a program created by fellows Claire Bryant, Carol
McGonnell, and Elizabeth Joy Roe, raised awareness of the crucial role of music
education in a child’s development, and culminated in a celebratory concert featuring
newly commissioned pieces by composers Nico Muhly and James Blachly.
Fellows Nathan Botts, Stephen Dunn, Elizabeth Janzen, Joanna Kaczorowska, and
Michael Mizrahi provided sick children in the Komansky Center for Children’s Health
at New York-Presbyterian, the University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell, with an
interactive musical experience through their Anyone Can Make Music program.
Following the sessions, composer Missy Mazzoli wrote an original musical work
entitled The Sound of Light, based on the children’s own creations. A third program,
The Bar-olk Project, was created by fellows Kristoffer Saebo and Arthur Sato and featured an interactive, educational, and casual concert bridging Baroque and folk music.
The Academy’s founding group of fellows—now its first group of alumni—completed
their fellowship at the end of the 2007–2008 season. We foresee that these musicians
will continue to find new ways to integrate education, community engagement, and
advocacy into their performing careers.

Donors
The Board and staff of Carnegie Hall express heartfelt gratitude to the numerous individuals,
corporations, foundations, and government agencies whose generous support helped make
Carnegie Hall’s major artistic growth in 2007–2008 possible. In addition to hosting nearly 900
events on its three stages, Carnegie Hall also launched its first international festival, Berlin in
Lights, and The Academy—a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill
Music Institute in partnership with the New York City Department of Education—completed
its first season.
Response from donors to these exciting new initiatives was extraordinary, with gifts to the Annual Fund totaling $29.6 million, up 19% from the previous fiscal year. This upsurge reflects
new support from major national foundations, and increased giving from individuals and corporations. In particular, we wish to thank Mrs. Stephen M. Kellen, whose leadership gift through
the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation brought the dynamic culture of her native
Berlin to life for audiences throughout New York City. We also wish to thank Bank of America—
returning for the third consecutive year as season sponsor—for its generous support as well as
Carnegie Hall Trustee Anne M. Finucane for her efforts in building this partnership.
Special events continued to play a glamorous role in generating essential support for Carnegie
Hall’s concert and education programming. The Opening Night Gala of Carnegie Hall’s 117th
season on October 4, 2007, featured the Carnegie Hall debut of the acclaimed Lucerne Festival
Orchestra, under the direction of David Robertson, with Murray Perahia as soloist. Opening Night,
sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers, was co-chaired by Mercedes and Sid R. Bass; Clarissa
and Edgar Bronfman Jr.; Susan and Edward C. Forst; Marybeth and Jay R. Petschek; Laura and
John Pomerantz; Annette and Oscar de la Renta; Judith and Burton P. Resnick; Elizabeth and Felix
G. Rohatyn; Joan and Sanford I. Weill; Elaine and James D. Wolfensohn; and Judy Francis Zankel.
On April 4, 2008, the Third Annual Medal of Excellence Gala was held, honoring Terry J.
Lundgren, a Carnegie Hall Trustee and the Chairman, President, and CEO of Macy’s, Inc. The
event surpassed records for revenue and attendance, and featured a rousing performance by
Tony Bennett. Television anchor Paula Zahn returned for the second consecutive season to
host the Discovering Music Luncheon on May 13, 2008, at the Rainbow Room, highlighting
The Weill Music Institute’s cultural exchange work with students and teachers in Turkey.
The season’s final event took place on June 10, 2008, with a benefit concert presentation of
Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein’s groundbreaking musical, Show Boat. We proudly
salute the leadership of each of these events.
Growth in endowment last season reflected a new bequest distribution from the estate of
Arthur Zankel, former Carnegie Hall Trustee and Vice Chairman, who established through his
will a major endowment fund in 2006 to support the programming and operations of Judy and
Arthur Zankel Hall. We are deeply grateful to Mr. Zankel for his generosity and foresight; we also
express heartfelt appreciation to current Trustee Judy Francis Zankel and to the entire Zankel
family for their stewardship of his legacy at Carnegie Hall, and for their continued personal
commitment to this institution.
Lastly, as a member of the Cultural Institutions Group, Carnegie Hall is deeply grateful for
the continued support of the City of New York, which provides funds for general operations
and an energy subsidy, as well as capital funding for major infrastructure improvements.
In particular, we wish to thank Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg; Kate D. Levin, Commissioner, New
York City Department of Cultural Affairs; Christine C. Quinn, New York City Council Speaker;
Dominic Recchia, Chair of the City Council Cultural Affairs Committee; and Council Member
Daniel R. Garodnick.
In addition, we thank the state and federal governments for their ongoing support of Carnegie
Hall’s concert presentations, education programs, and outreach efforts, especially United States
Senators Charles E. Schumer and Hillary Rodham Clinton, Representative Carolyn B. Maloney,
Governor David A. Paterson, State Senator Liz Krueger, and State Assembly Member Richard
N. Gottfried.

TREASURER’S REVIEW
Carnegie Hall experienced extraordinary growth in fiscal year 2008, the result of two
new major initiatives that both received strong donor support. The first was
The Academy—a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill
Music Institute, in partnership with the New York City Department of Education—
which completed its first full year. The Academy offers a two-year fellowship that
prepares outstanding post-graduate musicians for professional careers as both exemplary performers and community-minded music educators.
The second major initiative was Berlin in Lights, the first of many multi-disciplinary
festivals planned for coming seasons, drawing together the Hall’s programmatic and
educational resources, along with cultural partners from throughout New York City, to
explore compelling themes.
In fiscal year 2008, 879 events took place in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage, Zankel
Hall, and Weill Recital Hall—significantly more than last year’s total of 804. While
Carnegie Hall presented 195 of its own concerts, there was also heightened demand for performance space, particularly Zankel Hall, from outside renters, due in part to renovations to another venue in New York City. Box office receipts
and other concert-related revenue increased to $15.4 million from $14.9 million.
The 19.7% rise in total annual operating and fundraising expenses in fiscal year 2008 from $70.6 million to $84.5 million
reflected increased Hall/building rentals, and the growth of programming for The Academy and festivals. Revenues
from these mission-related activities grew by 7% to $37.8 million and covered 45% of total annual expenses in fiscal
year 2008.
Reflecting enthusiasm for the direction set by Carnegie Hall, particularly new programs like The Academy and Berlin in
Lights, contributions from individuals, corporations, government, and foundations, including special-event revenues,
increased 19% over the previous year to $29.6 million, and covered 35% of total expenses. The City of New York,
through the Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York City Council, again provided $1.6 million in funds for
operating and energy expenses, and Carnegie Hall also acknowledges with gratitude its continued significant funding
for capital projects.
Carnegie Hall’s balance sheet as of June 30, 2008, shows net assets of $402 million. Despite the turmoil in the financial
markets, endowment investments held steady at $270 million. In addition, pledges to the endowment amounted to $28
million at the end of the fiscal year.
The generous support of our donors, which has helped us to maintain a high standard of financial stability and strength,
as well as the dedication of our staff, have been essential to making Carnegie Hall’s achievements possible. We are
deeply grateful.
