Traffic Safety Changes (important!!)
Tena Koutou Parents and Friends
Congratulations to all of our Jump Jam teams who
competed recently. The children have done amazingly
well to persevere through the hours of lunch and
playtime practises that have gone into creating some
very polished performances. Many thanks also to the
teachers who have given up their break times and the
parents who have helped out.
Parents may have noticed the developments underway
in the Kereta block (Rooms 13, 14 and 15). Alterations
should be completed before Term 3 – meanwhile the
Year 7 and 8 students are temporarily relocated in the
hall, with minimal disruption to their classroom
programme.
Our Musical production is now underway. Parts have
been cast for Year 5 – 8 students who auditioned last
Friday – Miss Guise (our director) is very impressed with
the high quality of all those who auditioned. We
acknowledge how difficult it can be for students to
practise their lines and then get up and deliver these to
an audience – well done to all! Students will be
practising regularly from the beginning of next term,
building up to performing in Week 8 (the week of 12
September). Closer to the time we will be asking for
parent support with costumes and make-up – any help
will be much appreciated.
We have three events on the last three days of term
next week. “Wig Wednesday” mufti day on the
Wednesday, our school Hangi on the Thursday and
reports going home next Friday (last day of term). A big
thank you in advance to Karl Russell for preparing the
Hangi for us, to Naresha for her guidance, and to Miss
Guthrie for her organisation.
Finally, we as a staff are very concerned about child
safety at 3.00pm. Please check the note in this
newsletter regarding changes to the bus pickup and
carpark use at the end of the day.

From Week 1 of Term 3 the school bus will be
parking in the bottom car park, where it will collect
children at the end of the day for the school bus run.
This is due to safety concerns with children hopping
on the bus at a busy time. The bus also impedes
vision for both pedestrians and drivers, which is
another hazard.
Another issue we are experiencing is safety in our
bottom carpark, with children walking through and
parents driving in. Therefore, the gates in the bottom
car park will be closed in the afternoon, with access
ONLY to the school bus and a taxi that picks up
some students. No access will be given to parents
and it will be monitored.
Any children leaving the grounds will need to leave
through the main gate on Grants Road, up by the
administration building, or via the gate at the bottom
fields (on the way to Jellicoe Road).
Please also be aware of the road rules when
approaching the pedestrian crossing in the mornings
when it is not controlled. People are not stopping
when children are waiting to cross.
Obviously our main concern is the safety of your
child as they leave our grounds. Thank you for your
support.
NEW STUDENTS
We welcome the following students and their families to
Grantlea Downs in the last fortnight: Lillian Kritzinger and
Cassia Bardrick.
JUMP JAM COMPETITION
Last week 70 children represented Grantlea Downs at the S.C
Jump Jam Competition at the Theatre Royal. The six teams all
performed to a very high standard and looked amazing on
stage. A big congratulations goes to the GD Wreckers who
made it to the final for the open Year 4-6 Competition, the
GD Groovers
who placed 2nd
in the year 1-4
Competition and
a massive
congratulations
goes to the GD
Fuel Injectors
who placed first
in the Boys Only
Competition!
The boys’ performance was outstanding and had the crowd
on their feet.
A big thank you goes to the following staff who gave up a lot
of time to coach the teams: Mrs Gordon, Mrs Brown, Miss
Stevenson, Miss Mehrtens, Mrs White, Mrs Bray and Mrs
McKerchar. Thanks also to Gaela Kilgour and Jenna Willocks
for helping out with some of the teams.

REMINDER “WIG WEDNESDAY”
This event will be held next Wednesday
(6th July). Apologies for the confusion
last week – initially we had this for Week
8 in our Term calendar which went
home, but this date was changed later as
we realised it clashed with a large
number of children being away at Jump Jam. Children were
informed, but this message may not have reached all
households. The fundraiser itself is to raise money to support
children with cancer and their families. Children are asked to
bring a coin donation to school, and can wear mufti and a
“Wacky” wig or hairstyle on the day.
The Canteen will be open for morning tea only next
Thursday 7th July. Closed for lunch due to school hangi being
held.

Friday 19th August (Week 5)
Postponement Tuesday 30th August
Our ski/skate day is to be held during week 4, on Friday the 19th August. Both skiing and skating will be held at Lake
Tekapo, with the skiing at Roundhill and the skating at Alpine Springs Ice Skating Rink.
Please read the following information carefully and then fill in all the sections on the forms.

supervising them throughout the day. Older siblings do not qualify)
We require return slips with payment attached by Friday 1st July (week 9) as payments will need to be made to
both venues before we go. In previous years people have changed their minds within 24 hours of us going and this has
disrupted travel arrangements and caused us last minute problems therefore no late bookings will be considered, the
closing date will be Friday 1st July. If a medical certificate is supplied a refund will be made for the ski hire and lesson
etc. No refund will be given for the bus.
Note – all prices are special prices for school groups. Costs include transport, equipment hire, lessons, lift pass (skiing)
and entry (ice skating).
Please ensure that your child has the following clothing to ensure that they are warm throughout the day.

normal rate.
Please complete the return slip and return to the school office with payment included.
If you have any questions please see Miss Jeffrey in Room 5
