Congratulations to all competing teams
in this weekend’s grand finals. The
commitment and passion shown by players
and hardworking volunteers will hopefully
reap you great dividends by the end of the
game. We have all grown up embracing
a winning culture and to that end, it helps
prepare your plans and strategies to
achieve ultimate success. Nevertheless,
not winning is not failure. Your very efforts
to make the major day in September is
also cause for celebration. Well done to all
competing clubs today.

Whether it is netball or football, the bond
that is formed with your team mates,
especially in finals, is something that is
never forgotten, and to that end, it can
be one of the most rewarding experiences
in your lifetime. To all competing players,
you will be remembered for your positive
contributions in the spirit of our great
games. If you are playing, you have the
opportunity to etch an everlasting memory
by delivering unsurpassed efforts, inspiring
your team mates and lifting when the chips
are down…..no doubting that your ability
to stand tall when the pressure is on will
define your integrity & stamp you as a
match winner.
If you are spectating, spectate in a
positive manner as there is no doubt that
constructive support can generate far
more positive outcomes than anything
else. The focus is always on our players
but I would like to remind our players that
the very opportunity to play our great
sports is provided by our wonderful band of
community club volunteers who tirelessly
and without favour work hard to ensure
all runs smoothly. If you are playing, and
someone does something for you that
supports your on-field opportunity, say
thank you..... it means a whole lot more
than you could ever imagine.
Mad Monday & Trip Away Reminders
It is most sad and tragic to hear the news
of an AFL player passing away on a Trip
Away, a Trip Away which is supposed to
be fun. If you are having a Mad Monday
or partaking in a Trip Away, make it clear
to the participants what your expectations
are and what behaviours will be tolerated.
Absolutely, have a good time and enjoy
everyone’s company – but do it in a manner
that is respectful of everyone involved and
also to those in the wider community. Talk
about the risks that come with drinking –
none of us make good decisions when we
are drunk, and we need to look after our
mates.
Stick together as a group so that no-one
gets left behind to fend for themselves, or
no-one goes against the team rules. If you
need to, set up a buddy system and clearly
identify those that are designated non
drinkers who can assist.
Again, you want to know that your mate
is going to be there in support of you,
and that he will help you make the right
decision.
Good luck today and I hope your team
plays to potential.

Bendigo Bank Community Tipping Competition
Healesville v Woori Yallock - 1968 grand final
There were three strong contenders for
the 1968 premiership. Healesville, which
topped the ladder with a 17-1 record, had
not seemed inconvenienced by having to
play its home matches in the middle of the
Healesville racecourse. Upwey-Tecoma,
premiers of 1966-67, finished second with
15 wins. Woori Yallock was third with 14 wins
and a draw. Woori was the only side to defeat
Healesville during the year, but an 8 point
loss to wooden spooner Emerald in round 11
cost the Tigers the double chance.
Woori Yallock comfortably defeated Monbulk
in the first semi final. The following Saturday,
Healesville outlasted Upwey to win a rugged
second semi by 9 points. Woori Yallock used
the wide expanses of the Gembrook ground
to outpace Upwey in the preliminary final and
win its way through to the grand final by 28
points.
Healesville went confidently into the grand
final, with coach Wally McKenzie declaring
that ‘with our blending of youth and
experience and all our players prepared to
give their best, we should be able to blanket
Woori’. Healesville captain Jim Wandin was
the Bloods’ trump card. The 35 year old
former St.Kilda player was a brilliant centre
half back and was equally at home at centre
half forward.
The Tigers also expected to make a good
showing. The Gembrook ground suited
Woori’s play-on style. Star ruckman Jeff
Chapman, fresh from winning the YVMDFL
best and fairest award, and champion
centreman Ronald Hunter were Woori’s most
celebrated players.
A huge crowd at Gembrook watched on as
Woori Yallock jumped Healesville in the first
quarter and slammed on five goals. Although
kicking with the wind, the Bloods were
ragged up forward and managed only 1.6.
Healesville settled in the second term and
managed to reduce the deficit to 4 points.
The Tigers responded emphatically, with
forwards Haag and McDonald putting on
three quick goals.
8 – yvmdfl.com.au
After half time the Bloods moved Collis to
full forward, Chater to centre half back, and
Fisher onto the ball. These moves had the
effect of giving Healesville’s forward line
more bite. Woori Yallock’s team work and
sure ball handling began to break down as
the Bloods stormed back. With Endacott
on top in the ruck, Healesville erased the
deficit and went on to a 10 point lead. For
Healesville, Bates in the centre and Aitken
on the wing were both doing well against the
Woori stars, Hunter and Tiller. Late in the
quarter the Tigers booted a goal to draw to
within 3 points.
Early in the last term, Collis and Wandin
both missed important shots at goal for
Healesville. Woori then took over for a time
and put on three quick goals, the last of
which was a spectacular 60-yard effort by
McDonald. With only fifteen minutes left
to play, both reserves were on the ground
for Healesville and the Bloods trailed by 16
points.
Waixel, coming into the game after a quiet
start, kicked a goal for the Bloods at the
18 minute mark. Two minutes later, Cosson
slammed through a 50-yard goal, and rover
Hay squeezed through another from a tight
angle to give Healesville a 2 point lead.
After two quick behinds from the Tigers,
scores were level after 24 minutes and the
crowd was at fever pitch. A Woori Yallock
forward marked the kick-in, but could
manage only a point. Some great defence
from Smith and Robinson for Healesville
saw the ball transferred to Bates on the
half forward flank. Bates goaled to give
Healesville the lead once more. The brilliant
Tiller then broke free for Woori, bouncing
the ball twice and launching a long shot
at goal. Endacott punched the ball clear,
and Healesville regained possession. Smith
passed to Robinson, and on to Jim Ure who
coolly kicked the ball out of bounds just as
the siren sounded.

Division One Looking Back by Carli Mitchell
Football & Netball finals fever has hit the
Yarra Valley; the preliminary finals for Division
1 will be played at Alexandra this Sunday
September 16, whilst the grand finals for
Division 2 will be played at Healesville this
Saturday September 15. The Division 2
Seniors grand final between Yarra Glen and
Belgrave is one not to be missed, as Yarra
Glen are the only team to beat Belgrave all
season. How far can Upwey Tecoma go,
considering it was only a few weeks ago they
weren’t even in the top 5? The Mount Evelyn
netballers suffered their first loss against
Wandin, so now they are fighting for the right
to play them in the grand final – is the upand-coming Woori Yallock the dark horse of
the competition? The Seville Under 18s once
again see themselves partaking in a grand
final, with their opponent being Alexandra, a
side that has overcome plenty of odds to get
to where they are today. The Yarra Junction
netballers have come out of nowhere to earn
a spot in the grand final, and they will once
again face off against Yarra Glen in what
should be a great match. All of these games
are worth checking out, but the Yarra Glen/
Belgave grand final on Saturday 15th is one
not to be missed.
DIVISION 1 SENIORS
Gembrook Cockatoo 22.16.148 def
Woori Yallock 4.9.33
Having had the week off due to finishing on
top of the ladder, Gembrook Cockatoo dealt
their opponent in Woori Yallock a heavy blow
when they met at Warburton last week.
Woori were missing a few of their regular
players, and the inexperience showed on the
scoreboard as Gembrook kicked themselves
a very handy lead. Many people were led to
expect this match to be a close one, but it
was far from it; Gembrook had an eight goal
to nil first term, and from there, Woori had
the impossible task of trying to close the gap
between them and their opponent. Shannon
Richardson was a stand-out up forward for
Gembrook, kicking seven goals in a close to
best on ground performance; Andrew Shipp
(1 goal) was the player that caused the most
12 – yvmdfl.com.au
problems for Woori Yallock. By the time Woori
kicked their first goal in the second term, they
were already eleven goals down, with their
more experienced players not getting their
hands on the footy and having any impact on
the match. Shane Williams (3 goals), Ricky
Clark (3 goals) and Damien Volta (2 goals)
were also in Gembrook’s best, ensuring their
side has a spot in this year’s grand final.
Wandin 12.10.82 def by
Upwey Tecoma 16.25.121
Considering where Upwey Tecoma was
towards the beginning of the season and
where they are now, the side has done a very
good job of turning their fortune around –
and the next time this was to happen, it was
against Wandin at Yarra Junction last week.
Upwey just about kicked themselves out of
the game in the first quarter, managing to
kick only one goal from nine shots; Wandin,
on the other hand, was off to a flying start.
But it was the second quarter where Upwey
got back into the game, not only on the
scoreboard, but also pressure; two goals was
the difference at the major break, due to
Upwey’s inaccuracy. Jarrod Bayliss (1 goal)
and Rhys Chapman were best for their side
in their loss, but they were unable to lift
their team when they needed something to
get them going. The third term saw Upwey
stack on seven goals to three, and by this
time, Wandin were too far behind to recover
from the deficit. Sam Waters (1 goal), Blair
Sheppard (1 goal) and Chad Davis were best
for Upwey, proving that their wayward kicking
wasn’t going to cause any problems for their
overall score.
DIVISION 1 UNDER 18s
Upwey Tec. 8.10.58 def by Wandin 9.6.60
The games between these two sides over the
course of the year has been nothing short
of fantastic – and this semi final, played at
Yarra Junction, was the best of the lot. It’s
always do or die between Upwey Tecoma
and Wandin, and when it came down to it,
only two points could separate the winner
from the loser. Five points proved to be the
biggest difference at the major break, where
the game failed to break out to anything
above double digits. Tyler Haugh was Upwey’s
shining light up forward with five goals, as
was Luke McPhee for Wandin, who continues
his fine form during the past few weeks
with four of his own. The match was a bit
scrappy at times, with clearances becoming
increasingly difficult as the match progressed;
Jarrad Glenn (1 goal) and Liam McGookin took
matters into their own hands when Wandin
needed someone to stand up. Although it
may seem that Upwey may have kicked
themselves out of the game, they ultimately
lost to a side who played better when it really
counted.
Woori Yallock 7.5.47 def by
Emerald 13.9.87
Emerald has gone from strength-to-strength,
and with their next opponent being Woori
Yallock, they knew they had to take their
game to another level. Both sides started off
well, and the pressure around the ground
was intense; goals were hard to come by, and
the football was found at the base of packs
as opposed to being in dispute. The second
quarter was played in a very similar manner,
but it was where Emerald had started to make
their move, led by the likes of Ben O’Ryan
(1 goal), Nathan Bownds and Tim Ferguson.
Half time may have seemed to have come
at a bad time for Emerald, but they came
out firing in the third term, demonstrating
their consistency and ability to maintain the
playing style they had applied late in the
second term. Woori began to look sluggish in
comparison, and they were second to each
contest, getting beaten by their opponent
in the most crucial aspects of the match.
Emerald’s Jack Preston kicked a handy five
goals up forward, dominating in his respective
position; by the end of the game, Woori
Yallock had simply run out of legs against a
well-performed Emerald.

DIVISION 1 SENIORS
Woori Yallock vs Upwey Tecoma
Upwey Tecoma has yet to put a foot wrong
in this year’s finals, so it will be interesting
to see how they go up against Woori Yallock,
who in turn suffered a heavy loss at the
hands of Gembrook Cockatoo last week
in the semi final. Woori was missing a few
of its usual line-up, so hopefully they will
have returned for this week. It will also be
interesting to see how both these teams will
go playing up at Alexandra, on a surface they
don’t play on, and at a venue that requires a
bit of travel. Woori’s Daniel Lewis had a stellar
game against Wandin up forward, but had
no influence against Gembrook – he’ll need
to stand up for his side, because when he’s
on a lead, he’s next to impossible to stop.
Anthony Witkowski has had a great season,
and he will be someone Upwey needs to be
wary of, as well as Patrick Sharp and Danny
Ryan. The ground may favour Woori Yallock
more so than Upwey Tecoma, but the latter
has proven that they’re very good at adapting
to the different conditions – this game should
prove no different. Tyson Heinrich and Tom
Hedge are only a couple of players that Woori
need to be careful of, as they always lead by
example. I just think Upwey are a bit more
primed than Woori.
DIVISION 1 RESERVES
Upwey Tecoma vs Warburton Millgrove
Upwey Tecoma was very unlucky to lose by a
mere two points to Healesville, so now they
will be playing against Warburton Millgrove
in a do-or-die match. Warburton has come a
very long way since finishing the season in
fifth, but they have a very difficult task ahead
of them as Upwey finished on top – and are
shaping up to be the team most likely to
walk away as the victor. But Warby’s do-ordie attitude has gotten them to where they
are now, and they will continue to play in the
14 – yvmdfl.com.au
same manner; they are ones not to give up,
and they will give Upwey a very good run
for their money. Jake Hughes and Jackson
Lucas starred in Upwey’s loss to Healesville,
and they will undoubtedly continue to play
the same way to hopefully lead their side to
victory; a single forward will be the least of
Warby’s problems, as Upwey is known to have
multiple goal scorers. Playing at Alexandra will
provide neither side with an advantage, but it
may well resemble Warburton’s ground more
so than Upwey’s. Luke James and Daniel
Ormsby will be the ones to watch for Warby,
as will be Scott Muir. I fancy the underdog –
it’s the Burras for me.
DIVISION 1 UNDER 18s
Upwey Tecoma vs Emerald
Emerald has the very tough task of trying to
beat Upwey Tecoma today, having defeated
Woori Yallock by a comfortable forty points
to get them to the preliminary. All year it has
been a contest between Upwey and Wandin,
but with Emerald now in the mix to shake
things up, anything can happen. Upwey
Tecoma has only lost to Wandin this season,
so recent history will be in favour of them –
but with the way Emerald are playing, they
are rewriting the final pages. Upwey’s Tyler
Haugh kicked five goals against Wandin last
week, so he will be wanting to continue in the
same manner against Emerald – containing
him and Mitch Hannon will be the key to
achieving victory for the Bombers. If Emerald
manage to win this game, they may just not
be the dark horse of the competition after
all. Jack Preston is also coming off a five goal
haul, so this game may just well be a shootout between the two teams’ forward lines;
Wayde Ladner and Nathan Bownds are also
ones to watch for Emerald in this match, and
who knows, Emerald may come out on top
against all odds.

DON’T GO MAD ON MONDAY
As the season wraps up for another year
for the majority of VCFL clubs over the
next few weeks, the desire to ‘celebrate’
the season is often high on the priority list
for players and volunteers.
Mad Monday is a fixture of the community
sports calendar just like it is with the AFL
boys.
While we recognise that it is important for
your players and volunteers to celebrate
the hard work you have put in together all
year, it is critical that you don’t let all your
team rules go out the window with a binge
drinking session that has the risk of going
sour.
It is clearly documented that risky
behavior is heightened with excessive use
of alcohol.
There is an increased risk of violence
and assault; increased potential of risky
behavior like swimming or driving while
under the influence; and the risk that
the clubs reputation is hurt if someone
damages themselves or property while
‘celebrating’ too hard.
There have been too many hours of hard
work this year for it all to go down the
drain with the actions of a minority under
the influence of alcohol and peer pressure.
The Australian Drug Foundation, through
the Good Sports Program, encourages
clubs to think about Mad Monday and set
some ground rules before it comes around.
The President and the team leaders play
an important role in setting the boundaries
and standards for Mad Monday – just as
you set the ground rules for club culture on
the field of play.
Let’s have a look at team rules and how
they apply to Mad Monday:
16 – yvmdfl.com.au
Instructive Voice
Make it clear to the participants what your
expectations are and what behaviours will
be tolerated. Absolutely, have a good time
and enjoy everyone’s company – but do it
in a manner that is respectful of everyone
involved and also to those in the wider
community.
Talk about the risks that come with
drinking – none of us make good decisions
when we are drunk, and we need to look
after our mates.
Don’t sit back in silence. Use your voice to
get to the goal – having a good time and
celebrating another season just gone.
Numbers to the Ball
It is important to support each other on
Mad Monday just like you do on the field.
Stick together as a group so that no-one
gets left behind to fend for themselves, or
no-one goes against the team rules. If you
need to, set up a buddy system and clearly
identify those that are designated non
drinkers who can assist.
Again, you want to know that your mate
is going to be there in support of you,
and that he will help you make the right
decision. An ‘all-in’ culture will also
assist when the need to move venues, to
finish, or to clear out of a public space is
required.
The 1%’ers
Preparation and the 1%ers are also
important when it comes to Mad Monday.
Make sure there is plenty of food before
and during the event. Schedule times for
the group to sit down for a meal, or make
sure that finger food is circulated during
the event.
Keep drinking water. Drinking alcohol
quickly dehydrates your system, and
alternating an alcoholic drink with a water
during the day will help with the way you
feel now and tomorrow – it will also reduce
the total amount of drinks you have during
the day.
Keep yourself busy – play a few games of
pool, have a dance, and get around the
room for conversations. Don’t get sucked
into shouts – drink at your own pace.
Know your own limits.
Leadership
Leadership does not stop on the field.
It is more important than ever that the
club leaders play a role in monitoring
the behavior of the group, and setting
the standard on Mad Monday. You have
no issue reminding a player of their
responsibilities on the field and the team
rules - pull up any blokes that are straying
from the group on the grog and set them
straight.
Respect
Probably the most important word for Mad
Monday is RESPECT.
Not everyone in the community will share
your sentiment that you deserve to ‘have
a big one’ at the end of the season – to
them it will represent all that is bad about
football culture.
Give them no reason to make a complaint
or feel aggrieved by your behavior (best
to celebrate out of the public eye in the
clubrooms or ‘closed function’ if possible).
Give them every reason to respect the way
you carry yourselves as a bunch of players
and officials who are proud of themselves
and respect community values.
The Rules of the Game
It is against the law for anyone under the
age of 18 to be drinking alcohol.
Don’t let anyone who has been drinking to
drive anywhere, anytime.
What will the group think if you are out of
control, or passed out on the floor? Does
this give them licence to imitate your
behavior?

Belgrave 17.18.120 defeated
Seville 5.15.45
Yarra Glen 8.5.53 defeated by
Alexandra 12.9.81
Belgrave were back to their best this
weekend, ending Seville’s chances of playing
in this year’s grand final. Seville failed to
kick a goal in a half of football, which of
course made the task ahead of them even
more difficult than what it was to begin
with; by the time they registered their first
goal well into the third term, Belgrave was
so far ahead that it was impossible for them
to even be a challenge. Mitchell Collins was
back to his influential best up forward for
Belgrave, kicking six goals in a game where
it proved next to impossible to contain him;
there were nine different goal scorers as
opposed to Seville’s four. Thomas Stubley
was best on ground for Belgrave, a player
that, when given too much room to move,
will tear his opponent apart; Ben Fitzgerald
(2 goals) and Kory Grant were also amongst
Belgrave’s best as they now progress
through to the 2012 grand final.
The game started off as expected, with not
much separating these two teams on the
scoreboard; both Yarra Glen and Alexandra
were suffering from finals jitters, kicking at
roughly fifty percent. The second quarter
saw better accuracy, and Alexandra were
more desperate, and were willing to take
more risks which saw them being rewarded
on the scoreboard. Bradley Clark (2 goals)
and Ryan Smith tried everything in their
power to lift their side, but Alexandra met
each blow, and they came off better than
their opponent. The third quarter was when
everything changed, when Yarra Glen began
to crumble under Alex’s exerted pressure;
they were second to each contest, and their
kicking across the ground wasn’t as efficient
as it once was. Dylan McPhail, Paul Wallis
and Ben Woodard led the charge for their
side is a stirring victory.

Division Two Looking Ahead by Carli Mitchell
DIVISION 2 SENIORS
Yarra Glen vs Belgrave
As expected, the 2012 grand final will be
played between Yarra Glen and Belgrave,
and will be at Healesville. Belgrave was
undefeated for the entire season, with only
Yarra Glen coming close to beating them –
and they finally did, when the two teams
met in the semi finals. After getting defeated
quite convincingly by Yarra Glen, Belgrave
will definitely have a different plan of attack
this weekend, and this clash will a cracker.
A shoot-out will be the most likely for these
two teams, and it will be interesting to see
how many goals Mitchell Collins and Ryan
Kueffer will manage to kick. Thomas Stubley
was a stand-out against Seville, and he will
undoubtedly lead the way for Belgrave, along
with Daniel Calteri and Peter Gough; the
latter two have been a bit quiet during this
finals series, but they will stand up on the
big stage. Yarra Glen had a well-deserved
week off since defeating Belgrave, which
means their players will be well rested for
the contest that will like a tug-of-war. The
big ground may suit Yarra Glen more, but
Belgrave are very good at adapting, as
shown when they were undefeated during
the regular season. Expect this game to go
down to the wire. Close in contests and hard
tackling will be the decider. Who has the legs
to run out the game on the wide open spaces
of Healesville? Hudson, Hurley, Butler & Watt
all played an outstanding game in the semis
and will need to be contained. There can only
be one winner!!! In a tight one – Yarra Glen.
DIVISION 2 RESERVES
Belgrave vs Seville
Like their seniors side, Belgrave finished
the 2012 season on top of the ladder, and
as many may have expected, they will be
playing against Seville, who, besides Yarra
Glen, was one of the other sides that posed
as a serious threat in this finals competition.
This finals series has been nothing short of
exciting, and the last time these two teams
met in the semi finals, only a goal could
separate them. The grand final will be no
different, and I believe the final margin will
be something less than a kick. Belgrave’s
players will be well-rested heading into the
most important game of the season, but
could the week off hamper their performance
instead of helping – would it have been more
beneficial to play all the way through to the
grand final, like Seville has done? With all
of this aside, Mitchell Williams and Nicolas
Leary were great in their win against Yarra
Glen, and they will help to lift their side; Ben
Conder and Lucas Gniel were also good, so
hopefully they will remain consistent. Luke
Fitzgerald and Lee Dowsett are the ones to
watch for Belgrave, but as everyone knows,
anyone can lurk as the most dangerous come
grand final day. Belgrave for me.
DIVISION 2 UNDER 18s
Seville vs Alexandra
Many were led to believe that it was going
to be a Seville v Yarra Glen grand final, but
after defeating the latter quite convincingly,
Alexandra has earned themselves a spot in
this year’s grand final –all their hard work has
paid off. Seville has gone from strength-tostrength all season, looming as a formidable
opponent that not many teams could beat –
and with the likes of Luke Casini, Darcy Shore
and Nicholas Sciortino playing, and playing
well, it’s difficult for any team to get the
better of Seville. A neutral playing field may
be something that will give Alexandra a bit of
an advantage, as they have proven time and
time again that travelling does not affect any
part of their performance – but the space of
the Healesville ground will accommodate their
playing style more so than Seville’s. Dylan
McPhail, Paul Wallis and Jedd Hamill have
all played very well under the pressure that
accompanies finals, and they will prove to be
the players that Seville needs to be wary of.
It will be a close game as expected, and the
results may just be surprising – if Alexandra
has anything to do with it.

Looking Back by Carli Mitchell
DIVISION 2 A GRADE NETBALL
Yarra Glen [46] defeated Seville [18]
In what was the most important game
for these two sides, Seville entered this
game as the favourites against their
opponent in Yarra Glen – and it was
Yarra Glen that surprised not only their
opponent, but the rest of the competition,
as they comfortably defeated the team
that finished on top of the ladder. The
combination that was Elizabeth Kay and
Tarryn Thom caused multiple problems
for Seville, where the two goallers hardly
missed any of the shots they put up;
they were focussed, and they both played
a much better game than they have in
recent weeks. Tarryn Thom starred with
twenty eight goals, shooting more goals
herself than Seville’s final overall score;
Hillary Grubb, Peta Fay and Stacey Moate
led by example when it looked as though
Seville was going to pose as a threat. Zoe
Abbruzzese (14 goals) and Tania Hoare
played well in Seville’s loss, but they
weren’t quite as influential as they usually
are.
DIVISION 1 A GRADE NETBALL
Woori Yallock [36] defeated
Upwey Tecoma [33]
Playing at Warburton last week, Woori
Yallock did the near-impossible, rising
to the challenge and getting the better
of Upwey Tecoma, who was posing as
a serious finals threat. Upwey went
about trying to run their opponent off
their feet, but Woori were a very good
match, keeping up with the pace Upwey
set them. Woori Yallock capitalised on
Upwey’s mistakes, and turnovers were
abound across the court. The pressure was
intense, and it was Woori who managed to
break away first, and not crumble beneath
48 – yvmdfl.com.au
it; they had a huge win in their defence,
with their defenders nullifying the influence
of Upwey’s goallers in Jordan Lingard (19
goals) and Tess Linkins (14 goals), who are
usually a part of a game that is much more
high-scoring. Peri Stewart has improved
as the weeks have gone by, and she was
the difference between her team winning
or losing; she shot an accurate thirty
three goals. Joanna Goldsworthy, Stacey
Southwick and Mariah Scully were best for
Woori Yallock in their three goal victory.
Mount Evelyn [39] defeated by
Wandin [41]
Mount Evelyn were favourites to win this
match due to them being undefeated for
the entire season – but they have met
their match, with Wandin just being able
to get the better of them when it really
mattered. Not much could separate the
two teams, and the lead changed plenty
of times over the course of the match;
turnovers occurred when the pressure
appeared to be too much, and in the end,
it was Wandin who played better under
that given pressure. Wandin’s Melissa
Martinov continued her excellent form,
shooting thirty two goals to help ensure
her side got the victory; Nikki Phillips,
Kathleen McMahon and Beth Chiuchiarelli
were also fantastic in their side’s two
goal victory, which was the same amount
of goals they beat Upwey Tecoma the
previous week. Lauren Tesoriero and Gaby
Duncan were best for Mount Evelyn, but
they weren’t able to do enough to get their
team over the line when the game went
down to the wire.
Netball Looking Ahead by Carli Mitchell
DIVISION 1 A GRADE NETBALL
Woori Yallock vs Mount Evelyn
Mount Evelyn may have ended the season
undefeated and on top of the ladder, but
they were defeated in the semi finals by
a mere two goals against Wandin. Those
two teams have plenty of history, but
before Mount Evelyn can have the chance
to challenge them again, they will need
to get the better of the up-and-coming
Woori Yallock first. Woori has proven to
be a challenge all season, but it wasn’t
until the finals rolled around that they
started playing better than they had
during the regular season – and they’ve
gone strength-to-strength, now posing
as a serious threat. But against the
more experienced Mount Evelyn, their
inexperience could be their downfall.
Peri Stewart will have to get the better
of Kate Youlten or Morgan Brumby, and
in defence, those two girls hardly make
mistakes. Mariah Scully will have her
hands full with the likes of Ella Priestley,
Gaby Duncan or Lauren Tesoriero, but
they may just be able to find a way to
get the better of them, just like Wandin
did the previous week. I’m still going to
tip Mount Evelyn, but Woori Yallock are in
with a very good chance.
DIVISION 1 A RESERVE NETBALL
Monbulk vs Wandin
As expected, Monbulk and Wandin will be
playing against one another for the spot
in the grand final against Mount Evelyn.
Having finished respectively in second and
third on the ladder, it was always going
to be these two teams that were going
to fight it out. Monbulk was just too good
against Woori Yallock, whilst Wandin went
down by only five goals against their rivals
in Mount Evelyn. This game is liable to go
either way, but going by recent history,
Wandin has a good leg up against their
opponent. Jo Rutherford, Rebecca Finlay
and Shayne Broekhof have each played
well in this year’s finals, and I believe they
will continue to do so; the combination of
Jo Rutherford and Emma Mullinder in goals
is tough for any team to get the better of.
Hayley Barnes and Carly Baker in goals
each have also played well in the finals for
Wandin, and this game will be a shootout between the two teams. Whatever
happens, this match will be a close one –
expect to see it go down to the wire.
DIVISION 1 B GRADE NETBALL
Olinda Ferny Creek vs Upwey Tecoma
Olinda Ferny Creek may have finished the
season fourth on the ladder, but they’ve
done everything in their power to get
to where they are now – and with the
right amount of self-belief, they may just
very well defeat Upwey Tecoma, who in
turn finished second. Elise Tanzen, Romy
Schauble and Merrin Buxton each have
played well in Olinda’s wins to get them
to the preliminary, and if these three
girls can’t be stopped and their influence
on the match somehow nullified, Upwey
Tecoma will have a few problems on their
hands. Catherine Morris and Brenda Van
Keulen are the ones that have been the
shining lights for Upwey, and they will
undoubtedly try to get their team over the
line. The last time these two teams met,
Olinda came out on top, but this game
could be where it all changes – and it will
be a matter of who can break through the
pressure the opposition exerts, and who
will ultimately not crumble.
DIVISION 1 B RESERVE NETBALL
Olinda Ferny Creek vs Mount Evelyn
The game between these two sides is
going to be a great one, if their recent
history is anything to go by. Mount
Evelyn may have beaten Olinda Ferny
Creek the last time these two teams
yvmdfl.com.au – 49
www.sticks.com.au
met in the qualifying final, but it was
most likely these two teams were going
to battle it out for a spot in the grand
final against Wandin. Lauren Smith and
Tanya Daalmeyer have been stand-outs
for Olinda in their past few matches, and
they will be a couple of players that Mount
Evelyn will need to be wary of – and with
Lauren Smith in goals, Mount Evelyn will
have to find a way to somehow shut her
down, and give her no freedom to move.
Naomi Hammett and Prue Northey have
been playing well in goals for Mount
Evelyn, whilst in the centre court Naomi
Edwards has been causing numerous
headaches for her opponents. The speed
and endurance of each player will be a
factor in who wins and loses, and it may
very well be Olinda that gets on top this
time.
DIVISION 2 A GRADE NETBALL
Yarra Junction vs Yarra Glen
In a year that has undoubtedly been good
to Yarra Junction, they will be entering
the grand final as favourites – and rightly
so. They have peaked when it was the
right time, and they have proven to be a
very good challenge for their opponent
in Yarra Glen. Junction has beaten Yarra
Glen the last time these two met in the
qualifying final, but like many grand finals
beforehand, anything is likely to happen.
Yarra Glen’s pace through the centre court
has been something to watch over the
course of the season, whilst Junction’s
durability and their persistence, has been
something to be marvelled at. Cara Moore
and Jenny Gardner have been fantastic for
Junction in goals, with their combination
giving the likes of Elizabeth Kay and Tarryn
Thom a run for their money; this game
will be goal-for-goal if these girls have
anything to do with it. Catherine Cook
and Michelle Pooles have also had a great
season for Junction. Hillary Grubb and
50 – yvmdfl.com.au
www.sticks.com.au
Peta Fay have been leading by example for
Yarra Glen, and they will ultimately cause
numerous problems for Junction in their
respective positions. I’m going to tip Yarra
Junction, but only just.
DIVISION 2 A RESERVE
Powelltown vs Yea
Having finished the season fifth on the
ladder, Yea has done everything in their
power to ensure that they make it as far
as possible in the finals – and they are
finally being rewarded for their efforts.
Playing Powelltown in the grand final, will
be the first time these two teams meet,
and getting the better of Belgrave by a
mere goal, the odds may be against Yea,
but they will undoubtedly make everyone
go for the underdog. Cindy Hayes,
Sophie Watts and Emily Picken have been
instrumental in Yea’s fight through the
finals, and I believe they will continue
to do so. But being up against such a
good opponent, they cannot afford to put
a foot wrong, because Powelltown will
make them pay in the worst way possible.
The combination of Powelltown’s Simone
Traynor and Nikki Armstrong in goals
will be tough for Yea to shutdown, as will
Miranda Walker and Renee Finlay will also
cause problems for them. Powelltown will
be favourites upon entering this match,
but Yea will undoubtedly have a few tricks
up their sleeves.
DIVISION 2 B GRADE
Yarra Glen vs Alexandra
Having only lost the one game for the
entire season, Yarra Glen was always going
to be a tough opponent for any side to
get the better of. Now, with the season
on the balance, Alexandra will have to
play at their absolute best if they hope to
walk away as the grand finalists in 2012.
Two goals separated these two teams
when they last met in the semi finals, and
a one goal buffer against Belgrave sees
Alexandra with another opportunity to beat
their top of the ladder opponent. Brianna
Jones and Amy Dennett proved to be a
very lethal combination in goals for Yarra
Glen when these sides last played each
other, and it will be interesting to see if
they stick with the same goallers. Nicole
Manthrope has played well in goals for
Alex, so she will possibly get Yarra Glen’s
best defender on the day; Sally Krijt and
Michelle Fleming have also played well in
this finals series. I’m going to tip Yarra
Glen to win, but whatever the outcome,
the game is going to be a tight one.
DIVISION 2 B RESERVE
Seville vs Yea
Being the two stand-out teams in the
competition, many already believed that
it was going to be Seville and Yea facing
off against one another in the grand final.
Seville only suffered the one loss over the
course of the season, so it is little wonder
that they are favourites. The last time
these two met, Yea went down to Seville,
but since then, their game plan would’ve
changed, and a different Yea side will be
stepping up to the plate. Kate McMaster,
Judy Watts and Michelle Dolman have each
played well in the finals, as has goaller
Jade White – she will be one to watch, and
a game changer if this game goes down to
the wire. Seville’s Stephanie Skinner and
Molly Treloar each stood-out the last time
they played against Yea, but who knows?
They could continue their excellent form,
or this could be the match where Yea
exploits Seville’s weaknesses. I’m going to
back Seville, based on how well they did
over the course of the season.
