Ea~t Branch runs into South Fork Redwood
Highway , crosses mouth of J. Branch, Benbow Hotel is in ~36 , T 4 S , 3E just on
east edge of highway at mouth of East Branch
Benbow dam on Southfork of Eel ri v. 1
mi . below mouth of East braLc1 , consequent
E branch flows into a lake. Averbge rainfall for this section is 40" . :;::levation
490' at mouth of E. branch. It heads in
on No . slope of Red Mt. in Northern Mendocino Co . and floVis pretty much north for
the n ost part . Flows through It townships.
s
in from tLe south turn ri€ht off Redwood highway at old Cummings ; take Bell Springs road
and go to Linsder ranch. From the north turn left i mile north of Garberville on Harris
road and go by way of Harris to Linsder Ranch . Upper and middle reaches of stream is
unsett l ed country. I f one is to fish middle section means walking about 5 miles to
get into the creek. E. branch drains all wild and rugged country . There is a road
runs up for 5 mi. from mouth; this section fished heavy. Best months for fishing are
June , July , and August . Anyone willing to walk about 8 miles is pretty sure of a
good mess of trout. 'Hater is very cold on upper reaches , never getting about 60 .
'lhe last 5 mi l es spreads out more and has not got the natural oover , warms up to 72 .
I have planted both rainbow and steelhead in lower seotion with good results ; have made
pl ants there for the last three years . Natural propagation on upper and middle
reaches due to very little fishing is suooessful , but lower part is too easy to get
at and the natural propagation woul d not begin to take oare of it . Heaviest fishing is
during June and July . To my knowledge no alien f ish food has ever been i ntlL"oduced ;
