Pachacamac ruins near Lima
Dying yarn in Chincheros
of Machu Picchu are breathtaking.
“BeThesureruins
to include the second entrance to the
citadel - seeing the ruins in the morning as a
herd of llamas is wandering about and clouds are
drifting by is truly spectacular. However, Peru has
much to offer besides Machu Picchu. Buy gifts at
the local markets and take pictures of the colorful
costumes. Try the indigenous cuisine, like Lomo
Saltado with papas rellenas, and wash it down
with a Pisco Sour. If you are feeling a little more
adventurous, try the cuy, es delicioso!

machu picchu planning information
Planning tips for Machu Picchu:
Picchu makes for mild temperatures
between 50-85°F year-round. Peak
season is Jul.-Aug. with generally dry days
and cool nights. Short showers are
common throughout the year and the
citadel is often surrounded by fog, a
reason we recommend scheduling two
visits to capture the perfect photo.
Nov.-Apr. is the rainy season; however,
many people visit during this time to
avoid the heaviest crowds. Jan.-Feb. are
the wettest months and mountain passes
and roads may close suddenly due to
flooding. The Inca Trail is closed for
maintenance every Feb. Sunscreen
and bug repellent are recommended
year-round.
• Transportation & Geography: Machu
Picchu can only be accessed from Aguas
Calientes, the small village near the base
of the ruins that can be reached by train
from either Poroy Station (near Cuzco) or
Ollanta Station (Sacred Valley). Your visit
can be organized as a day-trip from either
location, or give yourself the luxury of
time by overnighting. Shuttle buses to the
ruins from town run frequently from 5:00
am to 5:30 pm. We recommend flying to
Cuzco and heading straight to the Sacred
Valley for a night to acclimate at a lower
altitude. After Machu Picchu, spend a few
nights exploring the Inca capital of Cuzco
before continuing to Lake Titicaca, the
Amazonas region, or back to Lima.
• Luggage: Trains have a strict one carry-on
bag policy. Pack an overnight bag and
store your extra luggage in the Sacred
Valley or Cuzco.
• Permits: Inca Trail permits sell out
months ahead of time. Advance purchase
is required for entrance to Machu Picchu,
with an additional permit to hike the
formidable Wayna Picchu mountain.
Passport information required to confirm.

lake titicaca planning information
Planning tips for Lake Titicaca:
• Climate: Pleasant and sunny days
Crafting blankets
Puno to
TRAVEL
TIMES
around 60°F from Feb.-Nov., with
rainfall during Dec.-Jan. Nights are
generally at or below freezing with the
coolest period from May-Sep. As
Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in
the world, it's best to relax on your first
day and acclimate to the altitude.
• Geography: Puno is the gateway to
breathtaking Lake Titicaca. The bustling
city can often feel hectic with dizzying
traffic, which is why we recommend
staying at one of our tranquil lakeside
hotels. Titicaca straddles the border of
Peru and Bolivia and it is easy to cross
between the two countries and see
both sides.
• Transportation: Puno can be reached
in several ways. Our favorite is the
luxury train ride from Cuzco which
operates Mon., Wed., and Sat. yearround, as well as Fri. from May-Oct.
Flights to nearby Juliaca airport or
comfortable coach buses to Puno are
also good alternatives.
