The Down Syndrome Association of Houston's Mission is to
provide programs and support to individuals with Down
syndrome, their families, and the professionals who serve
them, and to create awareness in the community through
advocacy, education and medical outreach.
Celebrating 40 Years
of Love & Hope
2014 marked 40
years of celebrating
Love & Hope in our
community. With a
wonderful home,
close to 2,000
members and a
strong bond, we can
definitely say that
DSAH is here to stay.
“DSAH is our
extended family”
~ DSAH Member
We envision a world in which all people with Down syndrome
have the opportunity to enhance the quality of life, realize
their life aspirations, and become accepted as a wonderfully
normal part of a very diverse community.
We invite the Houston community to get involved with DSAH. This is
a great opportunity for the community to learn about Down syndrome.
Our volunteers are a valuable asset that assist with childcare during
conferences, trainings, dancing at our Club 21 events, setting up for
World Down Syndrome Day or at the Buddy Walk. We change
perspectives profoundly by helping volunteers understand that life
with Down syndrome is both ordinary and remarkably fulfilling.

creative movement, and performing for others.
Camp for All and Camp Ability
DSAH is proud to partner up with Camp for All to offer
our members a fun-packed weekend for the entire
family. Our Camp for All Weekend is in March and it
attracts an approximate of 70 to 100 members.
DSAH is also proud to offer Camp Ability. This is a
summer day camp for children/teens with Down
syndrome and their siblings ages 3-17 years at our
Resource Center. We have crafts, music, games,
reading, writing, movement, a snack, and most of allfun!

DSAH Family Events
DSAH is proud to offer events
where all of our members have an
opportunity to network, learn more
about Down syndrome and start
building friendships for life. Some
of the events are The Pool Party,
The Holiday Party, and annual
conferences.
Outreach Program
Our Outreach Program provides information on an
Educational and Medical level to our community. Our
group seeks to increase the awareness of people with
Down syndrome and some of these
groups include
health professionals,
high school faculty
and students,
graduate students,
and so on.
The DSAH World Down Syndrome Day celebration on 3/30 drew over 700 attendees.
With a 3,000 egg hunt, food and entertainment for all, our community definitely
enjoyed themselves because our kids are
“One in a Minion”!
Accomplishments
Our DSAH Legislative Awareness Board member,
Ruth Lore Mason was very active in 2014. So much
that she was recognized as Advocate of the Year by
Parent to Parent Network giving her great recognition.
Her recognition didn’t just stop at an award but she
was also appointed as a member by Governor Perry
to the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities.
With this new position, Ruth Lore Mason also
received a Resolution for Debbie Riddle for all of her
hard work in advocating for adults with developmental
disabilities.
Thank you and congratulations to Ruth Lore Mason!
SB7 – The Assessment Tool
In 2014, there was great accomplishment with Senate Bill 7 that allowed for the
Assessment Tool of activities of Daily Living. This tool is to be used when assessing
individuals with disabilities in long term services. Previously the assessments were
done on a medical based model but thanks to the amendments, they will now be
based on a social model.

From Heartbreak to Happiness
The Down Syndrome Resource Center was
broken into on April 9, 2014. All of our flat

damaged or taken.
Our students and staff were heartbroken.
The Response was INCREDIBLE!
Houstonians came to the rescue of the Down
Syndrome Association of Houston!
As soon as the media got wind of our situation, the
response from our community was incredible!
Everything and even more got replaced!
