You have a candle, a box of nails or thumbtacks and matches. You are to attach the
candle to the wall so that it does not drip onto the table below.

The Candle Problem
• Fixedness - Karl Dunker
• In a classic experiment demonstrating functional fixedness (1945), Karl
Dunker gave participants a candle, a box of nails and several other objects,
asking them to attach the candle to the wall so that it didn’t drip onto the
table. below.*
• Dunker found that most participants tried to nail the candle directly to the
wall or glue it to the wall by melting the wax. Very few of them thought of
using the inside of the nail box as a candle-holder and nailing this to the
wall. *
In Dunker’s terms the participants were “fixated” on the box’s
normal function of holding nails and could not reconceptualize it in a
manner that allowed them to solve the problem.*

School is a Microcosm of the
COMMUNITY
• How do we function in the COMMUNITY and help
our students?
 School in house resources
Family Counselors
Social Workers
School Psychologists
Guidance Counselors
THESE ARE GREAT RESOURCES BUT …
Charlene M. Grecsek, EdD, LMHC 2010
SOMETIMES STUDENTS
NEED MORE
than the SCHOOLS can DO…..
Charlene M. Grecsek, EdD, LMHC 2010
WE NEED THE COMMUNITY TO
ASSIST..
Charlene M. Grecsek, EdD, LMHC 2010
WHAT CAN THE COMMUNITY RESOURCES DO?
• Provide services in the evenings on weekends and
holidays, and during the summer.
• Offer services outside of school..mostly in the home.
• Offer mostly family driven services AND REQUIRE FAMILY
INVOLVEMENT
• Connect the families to other resources such as housing,
food resources, support for younger children in the home
etc.
• Can see the other needs that youth do not present at
school.
• Offer more long term services
• In emergency no wait, providers have 800 numbers or staff
available 24/7
Charlene M. Grecsek, EdD, LMHC 2010
WHAT CAN PROVIDERS DO TO
SUPPORT the SCHOOLS ?
• PROVIDE COUNSELING AS NEEDED
– In times of cuts they can provide support for mental health
in homes or school
– Many are funded through outside resources
• PROVIDE A CASE MANAGER ON SITE TO LINK YOUTH
WITH RESOURCES
• PSYCHIATRIC – MEDICATION ISSUES ( in community)
• CONNECT SCHOOLS with JPO IF needed
• HELP in areas where the schools have concern
• Help with RTI process
Charlene M. Grecsek, EdD, LMHC 2010
In times where..
• Suicidal ideations and attempts are on the rise…
• 6 yr olds are demonstrating that they feel the pain by
making suicidal gestures and attempts…
• Homes are being foreclosed and youth are homeless…
• Families are in distress and increases in DV and abuse
are seen…
• Cuts to the District resources are higher than they have
ever been before..
WE NEED OUR PARTNERSHIPS
Not to replace CURRENT RESOURCES but add to what is
already there!
Charlene M. Grecsek, EdD, LMHC 2010
Who are the current partners?
