Taps, reportedly, began during the 1862 Civil War.
The Union Army Captain, Robert Elli was with his men near Harrison’s
Landing in Virginia. The Confederate Army was on the other side of the
narrow strip of land. During the night Captain Elli heard the moans of a
soldier who lay severely wounded on the field. Not knowing if it was a Union or Confederate soldier, the Captain decided to risk his life and bring the
stricken man back for medical attention.
Crawling on his stomach through the gunfire, the Captain reached the
stricken soldier and began pulling him toward his encampment. When the
Captain finally reached his own lines, he discovered it was actually a Confederate soldier, but the soldier was dead. The Captain lit a lantern and
suddenly caught his breath and went numb with shock. It was his own son.
The boy had been studying music in the South when the war broke out.
Without telling his father, the boy enlisted in the Confederate Army.
The following morning, heart-broken, the father asked permission of
his superiors to give his son a full military burial, despite his enemy status.
His request was only partially granted. The Captain had asked if he could
have a group of Army band members play a funeral dirge for his son at the
funeral. The request was turned down since the soldier was a Confederate. But out of respect for the father, they did say they could give him only
one musician. The Captain chose a bugler. He asked the bugler to play a
series of musical notes he had found on a piece of paper in the pocket of
the dead youth’s uniform. This wish was granted. The haunting melody,
we now know as “Taps” used at military funerals was
born.

The wood—workers did an outstanding job of getting the firewood together for the furnace at
North Bend Community Place. It was awesome to have old & young, combined with RCMP members to make the day productive. The worker-bees names went into a draw for an opportunity
to win a gift certificate from Coopers. The winners are: Jon Lane and Art Brooks. Everyone’s
effort is so very much appreciated.
Another successful tour! We had an awesome day and it was nice to see
such a good turnout of people to cheer on the heroic riders and crew. At the
School, we had a coin drive between the house teams. The yellow team was
the winner, and with the combined effort, the School raised $170.77. The
community came together and donated another $702.86 which is fabulous!
The grand total was $873.43. Next year we should put out a challenge to
other communities to have at least $1 per person living in their community to
go towards a very worthy cause!!!

Fall has arrived and we hope you all had a safe and fun-filled summer. The members of C.O.P. were
on the road during the summer, but we could do better, and more community surveillance if we have
more volunteers. We feel this service is an asset to our community and would like to see it continue,
but our membership is falling short of the numbers we need. If you would like to give a few hours of
your time—just one meeting per month-and as many hours as you wish to contribute—please contact
a COP member.

Food Bank Christmas
Giving Tree
Last year was the first year that the food
bank asked people from the community to
help make Christmas for the children of our
community even merrier. A paper tree was
created, along with removable tags, that had
the ages and sex of each child who benefits
from the food bank. Each person who removed a tag was then responsible for purchasing a gift for the individual and returning
the tag, along with the unwrapped present,
to be included in that families Christmas
food hamper. There were many fabulous
gifts that made it under the trees last Christmas for these children. It was such a success that this year we are asking again for
people in our community to
help spread some Christmas
cheer to families in need. The
tree will be on display at Canyon Lanes from Nov. 15-Dec. 6th. Your
gifts are very much appreciated. Thank you

What FAMILY PLACE is offering during November:
Come out to play
Better Beginnings is being offered later in the day to accommodate some of
our expectant moms’ schedules—Monday, November 19th between 5-7 pm, A
light supper will be provided. Free prenatal vitamins and weekly grocery coupons that are redeemable locally are available. Tye Dye a new t-shirt on
Monday, November 5th 9:30-12:30 pm. Everything is provided free of charge,
including iron on transfers of your family pictures. You just need to bring in your
picture (preferably in digital format). We have the special paper to print them
on. Bedtime Stories at Family Place on Monday, November 26th 6-8 pm
bring your children (jammies are welcome) where we will be reading bedtime
stories and snacking on hot chocolate and munchies. Parents will be given a
new story book and there will also be used story books to choose from, which
you can take home and read to your little ones. Positive Parenting Program
will be offered twice: Nov. 13th and 27th between 6-8 pm. Pizza or a light
dinner will be offered along with the opportunity to learn how to:
Recognize the causes of common childhood behaviour problems.
Build a positive relationship with your child.
Praise and encourage behaviour you like.
Teach your child new skills.
Set rules and give instructions your child will follow.
Respond to misbehaviour immediately, consistently and decisively.
Use discipline strategies that work.
Take care of yourself as a parent.

Abray Tiger ISAAC was arrested on several
outstanding warrants stemming from
charges of theft of motor vehicle, three
charges of driving while prohibited, flight
and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. ISAAC has since been released with
conditions. The Boston Bar RCMP would
