In the second reading today we have Saint John writing about age old axioms like,
“actions speak louder than words” and “if you talk the talk you had better walk the walk.”
These are different ways of saying that what you do should coincide with what you say
and believe in. Regardless of what we say that we believe, what we actually do demonstrates
what we really hold to be true in our lives. One can say just about anything about themselves but
if they do not back up their talk with deeds that confirm what they say about themselves then we
look upon them as hypocrites or frauds. It is this exact type of behavior that Jesus condemned
in His teaching, as He encountered many of the teachers of the Law proclaiming
what others should be doing and not following the law themselves.
As believers in the risen Christ we are called not only to belief in our Trinitarian God but also
to a way of acting in our lives, we are called not only to internalize our faith but to also bring
Christ to others by what we say and do. It is very true that this witnessing to the Gospel
can be extremely challenging in the secular world of today. With the attitudes of minimalism,
extremism, and a new brand of atheism that has taken root in our society it can be very
uncomfortable standing up for our faith in the world today. Jesus however, has never promised
us comfort in our faithful lives but He has promised us much much more, eternal joy in our
eternal lives. If we truly believe in the message of the Gospel this may be the time to step up to
the famed plate and be counted as a believer in a world that is growing more and more intolerant
of us and our message. Yes, we may be a bit uncomfortable about proclaiming and
living out our faith but what is a bit of discomfort compared to that eternal reward.
As the bishop instructs during an ordination concerning the Gospel message,
“Believe what you read, teach what you believe, practice what you teach.” Amen.

Prayer to
St. Joan of Arc
Most extraordinary soldier,
you insistently proclaim
“Let God be served first!”
You began by winning many victories
and received the plaudits of princess,
but then you were given to the enemy
and cruelly put to death.
Instill in us the desire to serve God first
and perform our earthly tasks
with that idea ever in our minds.
Amen.

PASTOR’S MESSAGE
ECOLOGY
AND OUR FAITH
During this coming week we celebrate
two special theme days throughout our
country, Earth Day, on April 22 and
Arbor Day on April 24. Both of these days
are reminders to us of the Jewish-Christian
understanding of creation and of our responsibility as stewards
of creation. In the two creation accounts that we find in the
Book of Genesis, the Bible writers make it very clear that it is
the Creator’s intention that His human creation has responsibility
for the world and all of its wonders. In the beginning, what is
emphasized is the truth that God created the world, that it
is good, that it is our home and that we are to live in harmony
with all of creation. The complexity and beauty of creation
reveals the truth, beauty and goodness of God. It is a most
precious legacy for us to respect, protect and enhance.
feet so to speak). What we practice and teach to our children
is critical for the attitudinal and behavioral changes that are
necessary for our planet; not just to survive but to thrive with
us sitting on it.
Recently I came across a summary of Roman Catholic
moral principles (broad and general values that should be
enshrined in public policy and individual actions) concerning
the environment. They do not reach down into the level of
specific choices or alternatives that have a lot of room for
differences of judgments but they give an over-arching
framework for Christian prayer, thought and action.

In the complex world that we inhabit there are a lot of
ecologically related concerns that we have to face as a
world family. Some that come quickly to mind are energy
policy (fossil fuels, solar energy, nuclear energy, wind energy,
global warming etc.). Another whole set of issues are related
to global poverty and the earth and climate abuse that results
from crushing poverty and hunger. It seems clear that we cannot
separate economic issues from ecological ones. They need to be
addressed together using solid science and economics in concert
with and informed by faith. International economic competition
and worldwide industrial energy policy are also factors. Closer to
home and more under our direct control are re-cycling practices,
prudent use of water, action against pollution and a respect for
and care for the environment that we directly inhabit (under our

Human life and dignity must remain at the forefront of any consideration of environmental questions
Stewardship is the appropriate model for human care for
the environment
Obligations to future generations must influence environmental
decision-making
In the spirit of subsidiarity, environmental decision-making
must be made at the appropriate level
The right to private property and the mandate to use
property for the common good must both be respected in
environmental policies
Environmental concerns are also moral concerns which require
radical rethinking of our consumer culture
Whatever environmentally friendly thing we do on Earth Day or
Arbor Day (planting a new tree is a great idea to me), may it be
a reminder to us all of the great gift that God has entrusted to our
care and gardening.

THIS YEAR’S NCEA CONVENTION
On April 7, 8 and 9, fifteen faculty and staff members were able
to participate in the three day NCEA (National Catholic Education
Association) Convention. Typically, the NCEA Convention is held in
other states. Fortunately, this year’s NCEA Convention was held in
Orlando, making it feasible for more SJA educators to participate.
Some of the workshops the teachers attended were as follows:
• 3D Printing
• What Are They Thinking? The Boy Brain Behavior and Learning
• Meet the Millennial Parent
• Paperless Classroom Management Strategies
• Decodable Text, Complex Text, Informational Text-Oh my!
Text selection and Use in the Primary Grades
• Full STREAM Ahead (content related to Science Technology
Religion Engineering Arts and Math)
• Higher-Order Learning Skills
• Dealing with Bullying in Catholic Schools
• School Lockdowns and Emergency Response Planning
• Make Every Minute Count:
Strategies for Struggling Learners
• iPad in the Math Classroom
• Technology Infused Active Learning
• Rigor on Instruction and Assessment
• iPad in the Foreign Language Classroom
• A Plan for a Successful Admissions Office
• Parent Ambassadors
• When Parents Bully the School
• Apple specific Education Seminars such as: “Enhancing Teaching
and Learning in Language Art and “Creating Content in the
Classroom with Mac”
“I am blessed to have attended the 2015 NCEA Convention as
it provided me with the opportunity for continued professional
development. My favorite session was “Teaching and Learning
in 21st Century Catholic School” which challenges me to be an
innovative, creative, disciplined educator in order to serve and lead
21st century learners. I believe that a clearly articulated curriculum
using the 4C’s: Creativity, Critical Thinking, Communication and
Collaboration, infused with Gospel values, will produce successful
students. I especially look forward to implementing the 4C’s to
engage students in their learning endeavor by facilitating projects
which require them to think out of the box.”
-Ms. Hiponia (2B)
“The convention provided me with a wealth of information. My
favorite session was “Making Every Minute Count: Strategies for
Struggling Learners”. The instructor provided tips to further engage
my students in math class. I found it beneficial that numerous
additional resources are available on the 2015 NCEA app.”
-Ms. Bricker (6B)
“I look forward to perfecting our Parent Ambassador Program
by recruiting more student ambassadors and creating beautiful
SJA banners around campus. I particularly enjoyed the
“Parent Ambassador” session because I want to ensure we
further enhance our open houses by showing student-centered
videos to highlight why they love St. Joan of Arc.”
-Mrs. Bradley (School Registrar)
We are thankful to all the faculty and staff that stayed at SJA
to ensure our students were learning and were safe. We are
particularly grateful to our students for being on their best behavior.
Thank you for your support as this professional development
opportunity experience has inspired our educators to implement
numerous new ideas. Our teachers will also be sharing what they
learned with their colleagues at upcoming faculty meetings.

May 6 - Last day of Classes
We only have 3 more weeks of Religious Education classes (CCD) but preparations are
already underway for the 2015-2016 school year. In order to prepare the calendar and
order materials we need to know a good approximate number of the children registered
in the program.
Two important things to remember:
1. Preparation for the Sacrament of First Holy Communion is a two year program.
Typically grade 1 is First Communion Year 1 and grade 2 is First Communion
Year 2. Preparation for Confirmation is also a two year program:
Confirmation I in 7th grade and Confirmation II in 8th grade.
2. Reception of the sacraments is not the conclusion of a child or teen continuing
faith formation. We have continuing religious education for grades PK4 to
8th grade. Please consider seriously bringing your children back to
CCD classes after they receive First Communion.
Parent Formation is also important. We will have parent religion classes for our Religious
Education families. Consider the possibility of joining the Parent Formation Class next year
while you wait for your child to finish their weekly classes. This is a fun way to meet
other parents, make friends, learn more about our Catholic faith and be active in your
child’s religious formation.
