I’ve just returned from Houston, Texas where I attended the Global Clergywomen’s Gathering
and also the World Methodist Conference. What an experience! Over 27 nations were represented at
the Clergywomen’s event. At the World Methodist Conference, the different languages being spoken
made a rumbling sound as voices recited the same prayers and sang the same songs in different words.
I counted at least 7 different booths among the translators and when the scripture was read, it often
included readers in at least a dozen differing languages and dialects. Not surprisingly the theme of both
gatherings was “ONE” – one people, one faith, one church, one body in Christ Jesus. Yet the question
became increasingly clear – How can we be “ONE” in a divided world?
As I reflected on this question I was reminded of the quote from Charles Dickens’ historical novel
about the events leading up to and including the French Revolution, Tale of Two Cities, “It was the best
of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch
of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was
the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair…” How appropriate to the time we live in with its
technology and transportation that make it possible to communicate and travel all around the world!
Education can hardly keep up with the astounding advances in knowledge and information! We are
seriously talking about conquering many of the world’s most horrible diseases. Organ transplants and
prosthetics are being formed with 3-D copiers and bits of matter. Yet, there is also terrible poverty,
hunger, lack of resources, violence, and groups that, using religion as a mask, foster tribalism and seek
to return us all to the dark ages of separation and fear. In our own nation, racial violence and hatred have

led us to the edge of an abyss that many fear will cause another war of division which with modern
technology and guns would be far worse than the Civil War where we lost more lives than in all the other
wars in our history.
On the plane ride home I found myself thinking about my grandfather. He was born somewhere
outside of Carmel, NY in the late 1800s and was either an orphan or abandoned child. At the age of four,
he was taken in by a local family and put to work on their farm where he did chores and picked fruit
every summer to earn money to buy shoes so he could go to school. Later, he left the farm, and worked
for the circus as a “tent boy and animal handler”. He oystered in the Bronx and took any kind of work
in New York City that he could find. This was during one of the greatest immigration periods in our
nation’s history. Ellis Island saw thousands of people coming to our shores every day and if you go to
visit the museum you can see pictures and hear stories of those who came looking for opportunity and
freedom from nearly every country in Europe. The museum also tells how as people settled in their new
homeland, they went into neighborhoods where everyone came from the same places they did – there
was “little Italy” but there was also “little Denmark”, “little Armenia” and “little Ireland”, as well.
Everyone wanted to be around people who spoke their language, ate their food, dressed in the way they
dressed, worshiped the God they knew, and were born, married, lived, worked and died in ways they
understood. Of course, there was prejudice. Some was anti-Semitic as Jews were excluded from many
work and educational opportunities. Sometimes the discrimination was hidden but in other places signs
were openly posted - the most famous perhaps is – “JOB OPENINGS! No Irish need apply!” This is
also the era of the segregated water fountain, rest room, lunch counter, school and trolley with the
“Whites Only” signs that stayed in place until they were removed after the Civil Rights Movement of the
60s. So, my grandpa, who served his country as a Marine in WWI, and who lived in this country all of
his life, would never apply for any work where there was a restriction of any kind on who could or could
not apply. Why? Because he didn’t know who he was. He didn’t know if he was Irish, or Italian, or
Lithuanian, or Armenian, or German or French or …..whatever. So he just assumed that he “was” all
those things and more. Grandpa came to understand that what he was didn’t matter because as a Christian
he had no nation, race or tribe or family except one – Christ and Christ alone. And that’s what he taught
all of us. “You’re Christian!” he used to say, “That’s who and what you are.”
So, I think there’s an answer in grandpa’s way of accepting who he was for how we all are going
to “be church” in the world we live in today and how we can be the people Christ calls us to be in these
“best and worst of times”. I believe we must be the people who are “no people” except “God’s people”.
To belong to Jesus, the signs we post in our hearts and in our homes and in our churches and in our world,
DISCIPLES NEEDED. PEOPLE LIKE YOU
WELCOME TO APPLY! Because, really, we’re all people, like my grandpa, who don’t

know who we are until we find ourselves, whole and complete, through the grace and mercy and love of
God. We who are all immigrant, orphaned children before we find our “ONE HOME” in God. We have
no right to exclude anyone else from the blessings and gifts we’ve been given and when we really live
this way, loving God and others with all our heart and mind and spirit, we will be well on the way to
becoming the “ONE PEOPLE” God calls us to be!

On Saturday, May 21, the Mountainville
UMC family hosted the community in peace
and love by offering burgers, smoothies, and
live music for several hours. Golden oldies
were performed as well as traditional and
contemporary hymns. A jazz group rounded
the day off putting them all in the groove to
“go forth in peace and love.” The church
family hopes to continue this as a new tradition
the Saturday before Memorial Day. And
yes....they hope to offer the VERY popular smoothies again!
Vail’s Gate UMC continued their summer tradition of collecting school supplies for children
sheltered at Safe Homes of Orange County, gathering such needed items as pencils, erasers,
pens, crayons and composition books.

On June 2nd, at a special City Society event in NYC, Darien UMC was the recipient of the Camp Olmstead
Award for outstanding support. The award was presented at a benefit to raise funds for camper scholarships,
at Christ Church UMC in Manhattan. Darien UMC and Bishop Jane Allen Middleton were recognized
for their commitment to the service of children and their relationship with Olmsted Center.

On Sunday, August 14th, the Highland Mills UMC hosted the Glorification Singers, a quartet from Long Island
who have been ministering the Word of God musically for over 25 years. Their harmonic voices in song, as well
as words from Scripture and of personal testimony, lifted all in attendance above the oppressive heat with the
reminder to always “WALK THE TALK” as we live like Jesus
in PEACE and LOVE with all!!!! This was one of Highland
mills’ ongoing efforts to reach out to the community in love,
peace, and respect for all.

Poughkeepsie UMC sent out several mission teams this summer: In late June
a team of 18 participated in the MFUGE mission trip to Philadelphia to
perform inner-city mission work. Later in July, 12 team members traveled to
Ensenada Mexico to minister to a church community, and upon returning 21
team members headed off to serve right in their own community for a week
through Bridge Builders.

Fourteen youth and eight adults from UMC of Hyde Park headed for Frostburg, Maryland for an exciting
week, June 26-July 2 at Camp Hope, their annual Appalachian mission trip. The theme for the week was
‘The Lifelong Race’ to know Jesus and to know His Kingdom. A comparison was
made to Olympic athletes who put in long hours of endless work for their extreme
accomplishment of being in the Olympics. The team was assigned three different work

Revelation Celebration Music Festival has turned out
to be an extraordinary event taking place right next
door to the New Milford-Edenville United
Methodist Church. New Milford NY UMC has
ventured out to try new ways to spread the good news
in the community in order to see the vision and
mission of the United Methodist Church come into full flourishing. Saturday, September 3rd, 2016 was a day of
gospel music, freedom messages, petting animals, pony rides, hula-hoops, bubbles and more.
Event visionary Michael McClelland states, “My original thought was to get Sonrise Mountain Revival up on the
mountain at Jamie’s… Look what happened! God is GREAT!” Sonrise Mountain Revival did come. However,
they were not alone. Mercy Shore, Journey Worship, Band 288, Sons of the Most High, Rev. Wendy Paige, The
Paul Family, Risen, Force for Good, Areayla Paul, Brett Boyd, and The Solid Rock Band all came to participate,
providing a full day and evening of live Gospel music.
In addition to music, the festival featured “The King’s Bible
Ministry” led by George Pomante. The children were able to walk
through Noah’s Arc and learn about the various ways the Bible has
shaped government and leadership throughout nations in world. At
the exit of the arc, families received free Bibles and CDs.

This is what happens when you put a team of believers together to
strategize an effective way to reach the community. God provided
success. The team consisted of myself, Pastor Crystal Paul, as the
Host; New Milford worship minister Michael McClelland, Pastor
Gregg Gaffney who also served as MC, Richard Ferguson and
Jamie Rickey, owner of RickeyFarm. With an urgency to reach the
community we serve, my goal as the host pastor was to obtain a
“Direct Hit” with a mission to
spread messages of faith, unity, peace, and love through music, nature and
family fun. The team has been meeting every Tuesday evening since May to
plan an event that every person, regardless of differences, could enjoy. Glory to
God we had about 300 people come to the mountain for Revelation Celebration.
Next year we want to continue to extend the invitation to all the district
churches. If you did not have the opportunity to experience this family fun
outdoor heavenly experience, you would not want to miss it next time.

Dr. Scott McKenzie is a partner and Sr. Vice President with Horizons Stewardship. Dr. McKenzie has worked in stewardship for over 25
years as a denominational leader and now as a partner and Senior Vice President with Horizons Stewardship. Scott has worked in Presbyterian Churches from Pennsylvania to California and Colorado to Florida. He has a Ph.D. in spiritual formation from Duquesne University.
He is a co-author of Climb Higher: Reaching New Heights in Giving and Discipleship and Bounty: Ten Ways to Increase Giving in Your Church. Generosity Rising: Lead a Stewardship Revolution in Your Church was released on March 1 of 2016.

from the New York Annual Conference to enjoy this
experience with us.
In the four days you are here you will receive a thorough
physical examination and any follow-up tests that may
be indicated. There will also be time to tour the Hospital
and participate in seminars on recent developments in
health care. You will get a penetrating view of your
mission hospital at work. In addition, you will be
performing a unique function for us, for your presence
here will remind the entire Hospital family of our ties
to the “People called Methodist,” which go back over
130 years.

Historical Sketch
New York Methodist Hospital, the “Mother Hospital of
Methodism,” was chartered in 1881. Today New York
Methodist is a modern, 651-bed acute care teaching
hospital serving a constituency that includes Brooklyn
and far beyond.
While most patients have private or public insurance,
the Hospital gives tens of millions of dollars in charity
care each year. The Red Stocking Christmas Appeal in
our churches, as well as generous wills and legacies,
enable us to extend healing to the needy. We believe
this is the ministry you want us to perform, an outreach
mission of the church, fulfilling Christ’s command to
heal the sick.

Who is Invited?
Clergy and/or their spouses from the New York Annual
Conference are invited to participate. Preference is
given to active clergy serving pastoral appointments, as
well as their spouses. Preference is also given to those
who have not participated in the clinic in the past
five years. Clergy and spouses may attend together or
separately. Registrations are accepted on a first-come,
first-served basis, so respond promptly.
What to Expect
A stay of four days and nights (Monday evening until
Friday afternoon). You will room at the Hospital and
eat most meals in the cafeteria, courtesy of New York
Methodist.
A thorough physical examination with routine and
special laboratory and radiographic tests. If you are
referred for certain advanced procedures, it may not be
possible to schedule all of them during your stay.
A consultation with your doctor, projecting your
immediate and future health concerns.
How to Register
The registration form is available through the
conference email communications. Please enclose the
completed application form with the $50 registration
fee via postal mail to Rev. Elizabeth A. Braddon, the
Coordinator of the Pastors and Spouses’ Clinics, at 9B
Lanphiers Cove Rd., Branford, CT 06405. Rev. Braddon
may be reached by telephone at her home office by
calling 203.481.2789. Make your check payable to New
York Methodist Hospital.
Cost
Each participant will pay a registration fee of $50.00.
Room, board, lab fees, examinations, x-rays and
consultations are covered by the Hospital. The Hospital
will bill your insurance and waive any copayment
costs. Doctors, nurses and staff members of New York
Methodist Hospital are happy to provide this clinic for
you.
Talks by physicians, nurses, administrators, social
workers, chaplains and other Hospital personnel
participating in seminars.
Tours and explanations of modern medical facilities,
including, among others, the Cardiothoracic Surgery
Unit, the Emergency Rooms, and Sleep Disorders
Laboratory. Discussions with Hospital staff about
the current state of health care as well as physical,
emotional, and spiritual self-care.

Act of Repentance Service to be held at Cos Cob
Saturday October 15, 11am
Members of the Committee on Native American Ministries (CoNAM) will be making a
pilgrimage to the area of the “first cited as largest massacre location”*, on October 15th
at 11am. An Act of Repentance Service will be held at Tomac Cove, in Cos Cob, CT,
on Saturday October 15, at 11am.
From author Missy Wolfe’s book, Insubordinate Spirit pg 208: “Perhaps one of the
reasons that this grotesque event, where possibly more people perished than the
Mystic Massacre of 1637, remains obscure is that its location, unlike that of Mystic, has
never been verified by professional archaeologists. It is against federal laws to disturb
the remains of America’s native people.“ However, she goes on to say that Tomac
Cove has been proposed as one of the four locations of the Munsees massacre.
Ms. Wolfe is still convinced that the reservoir area that we (Pastor Steve Peiffer, Dan
and Elaine Winward) also scouted as our end-point, is generally the correct place
because of the abundance of rivers and water there, enabling Native peoples from all
over the area to travel to the encampment, because it was a special new-moon festival
when they were attacked, and there were many different tribes present.
Our CoNAM is fulfilling the promise we made
at our NY Annual Conference in 2015 and
the words that our then Bishop Jane Allen
Middleton said that “we should never forget”.
We will take up her challenge and follow
through in this humble service.
