China is the country of the largest acreage of pomelo production,
and its output rank second in the world, just next to USA

There is a very long history (more than 3000 years) of pomelo
cultivation.

More than 200 cultivars recorded in China, including local and
introduced . About ten cultivars are planted for commercially
(Shatianyou,Guanximiyou,Wendanyou, Long’anyou and so on)
In 2008: Cultivated area = 60060 ha,
Production = 540546. tons, Yield = 9.0 tons/ha
96% produced for domestic consumption



According to geographical feature , the climate and cultivars,
the Chinese pomelo area has formed three cultivation centres.
Southeast pomelo area，
including Fujian,Zhejiang
and Taiwan, the main
cultivars are Guanxi honey
pomelo,Yufan pomelo,shiji
pomelo and Wanbai
pomelo, Hu Pomelo etc.
South China pomelo area,
including Guangdong,
Guangxi ,main cultivars is
Shatian pomelo
Southwest pomelo area, including Sichuan, Chongqing,
Hunan, Guizhou, main cultivars are Tongxian pomelo,
Chuixiang pomelo and Dianjiangbai pomelo etc.

Current main challenges of Chinese pomelo
industry

The challenges of domestic market
The consumer have a lot of choice.
Fruit species: Apple, citrus, pear, grape, peach, ,litchi, longan.
Citrus: pomelo, Mandarin, sweet orange, navel orange, grapefruit
Annual Production: Facilities Cultivation technology adopted,
papaya, banana in Beijing, Citrus in Shanxi province, pear grafted
cultivation in southern area
Prolong harvest season: Navel orange (Nov. to
April ),annual banana cultivation,
Chinese changed their taste every more ten years.
Sweet to sour,
red to green.


Lack of the new excellent cultivars
There are various disease , HLB , CTV、CEV and so on

Conclusion
 Because of the influence of diseases and disastrous
weather, the pomelo production began to decrease
from 2004. The world production quantity in 2005
droped nearly 1/5 compared to that in 2004,
 China is the country of the largest acreage of
pomelo production, and its output rank second in
the world, just next to USA. In China, the
production area and output increased steadily, and
the growth rate speeded up gradually.
Conclusion

The production in China mainly supplies the domestic market.
However, after 2000 the export quantity of pomelo rose
quickly, so it indicated that the pomelo products of our
country was accepted by the international market gradually
and its potential was great.

