Commander’s Reflections
by Lori Grizzle
Lori Grizzle, Commander KY AmVets
Hello, AmVets, Ladies Auxiliary,
Sons and Juniors!
I would like to thank AMVETS
Post 67 and Ray Montgomery
Post Commander for hosting
September SEC meeting; we
had a great time and a good
meeting.
I would like to congratulate
AMVETS Post 127 Corbin and
their Post Commander Jackson
Spurlock for the National awards
they received for membership. That’s what we are
all about we need more
members, so please go
out and recruit some new
people.
Thanks Gene Brainer for
the great job you do for
our veterans and signing
up new members. Please
everybody go out and
sign up a new member!
We are in the middle of
October now and I wonder where time went,
it seems to go by so
fast. All the Holidays are
coming, Veterans Day,
Thanksgiving, Christmas
and the New Year, I want
to wish everyone Happy
Holiday’s and for everyone
to be safe in their travels.
January SEC meeting will be at
AMVETS Post 119 Owensboro, I
hope to see everyone there.
I would like to thank my State
Officers for doing their jobs.
Hank Rummage 1st Vice, you
done a great job on the membership contest and I hope
everyone gets involved this year.
Thanks, Inspector General Pete

National Convention
This year the National
Convention was held in St.
Louis, Missouri. You can learn
a lot whether you have attended
several or if it is your first one. I
challenge each of you to try to
attend these. Between the committee meeting, business sessions and focus you can walk
away with several new ideas to
take back to your auxiliary.
This year the Department of
Kentucky brought back several
awards/acknowledgements
for the Department and Local
Auxiliaries.
Sept SEC
I would like to thank
Clay City Post 67 for
their hospitality during the
September SEC weekend. It was a very informational meeting. The
officers have great ideas
on how to raise money for
the Department and the
many causes we support.
The ladies asked questions, discussed ideas
and ways to meet our
goals. This just proves to
me once again that there
is a definite drive to show
everyone what the state
of Kentucky is capable of
in helping our veterans.

If your Auxiliary is hosting a
function or a meeting that you
would like for me to attend or if
you feel like your Auxiliary would
benefit from a round table discussion with a few of the state
officers, please contact me by
email at [email protected]
or at 502-773-3650.
Happy Holidays
The next edition of the paper
will not be out until after the holidays, so I would like to wish all
of you a Happy Thanksgiving,
Merry Christmas, and a Happy
New Year. May your travels
be safe and your holidays
enjoyable.
I am still helping the AMVET
Executive Director, Joe Doebler
with the Department website. The information changes
frequently so if it has been a
while since you have looked
at it I encourage you to go to
www.amvetsofky.org and look
around. There is a feedback
link that you can use to make
any comments, good or bad,
suggestions or information you
would like to see on there.

Membership
First and foremost our attention
should be focused on retaining
membership. In Kentucky we
habitually have a terrible percentage of renewals. I would
like to see an extra effort from
each post in contacting the
non-renewed and it is
always best for a personal contact either in person or by phone. Share
the list of non-renewed
with active members
of your post and allow
them to make contact
so it isn’t such a burden
on one person. We have
over 400 non-renewed
each year but are able
to compensate with the
addition of new members.
Keep in mind that our national
headquarters has mailed the
first renewal notice. The second notice will be mailed the
last of November or sometime in
December. All annual membership expires on December 31,
2011. If your dues are not paid
by that date you are no longer a
member. Keep in mind, you can
still renew after December 31st
but your membership is void in
the interim until your 2012 dues
are submitted. Lastly, remember to recruit new members.
National for years has suggested each member should sign up
one new member a year. We’ve
been very close to 3,000 members in Kentucky and let’s try to
make it this year.
Life Membership Increase
During the national convention
in 2009 there was a resolution
adopted that raised the cost of
a life membership for the next
3 years. In 2009 the cost was
raised from $150 to $180. In

2010 the cost went from $180 to
200. Now the cost will increase
from $200 to $250. As of
January 1, 2012 life membership
will cost $250. Any membership
received after December 15th
will be at the $250 rate. That will
be split up like this, ½ or $125
will go to national, $62.50 will go
to te state and the other $62.50
will be retained by the post.
When submitting to state headquarters make one check payable to AMVETS Department
of Kentucky in the amount of
$187.50. I get that by adding
the $125 and the $62.50. Mail
all membership to state headquarters. I might add that this
last increase is the last increase
that was adopted. So, hopefully
life membership will stay at $250
for a long while.
Programs
Secondly but just as important
is Programs Reporting. We are
in the 4th National District with
8 other states. They are Ohio,
Michigan, Illinois, Missouri,
Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin,
and Iowa. By now you probably guessed what I’m about to
say. Of the 9 states at the just
concluded national convention,
when it’s time to hand out
awards for programs one state
was obviously missing. This
particular award was for 100%
participation by each post.
Kentucky was nowhere to be
found. It was very embarrassing. All eight states received a
beautiful plaque. Kentucky with
21 posts could only muster 4
posts that had entered a project. I’m sure every post qualifies and does have events that
qualify. With November 11th
coming up, I’ll bet every post
has some kind of activity scheduled they could enter. I beg each
of the 2nd Vice Commanders
to go to www.amvet.org, click
on programs and submit your
entry. If you don’t know how,
contact the Department 2nd
Vice Commander Tom Farris or
send in the information to him
so he can enter it for you. If you
want, you can send it to me
and I’ll enter it for you or walk
you through the process. It is
so very simple and as you enter
how many people were involved
or hours spent or miles traveled
the program does all the adding for you. The programs are
evaluated twice a year, the first
6 months and the second six
months. Let’s get Kentucky at
100% so we can be respected.
NOVEMBER 2011
To give you an idea of the
progress from the other 4th
National District posts I will put
in Parenthesis the total posts
from each state.
IL (86), IN (36), IA (65), KY (21),
MI (64), MN (24), MO (32), OH
(133), WI (53).
Now you tell me why we can’t
get 100% when you look at the
number of posts in these other
states that can? I hate the term
apathy but it sure looks like it.
PNC John Lorec
I received word that Past
National Commander (1985)
John Lorec has passed away.
He was a friend to many in
Kentucky. John died at the
VA Hospital in Asheville, North
Carolina on October 20, 2011.

time to wish each of you a Very
Merry Christmas and a Happy
Healthy New Year. I wish a happy holiday season for you and
your families and for the New
Year to bring you all the happiness and joy throughout 2012.
Now during the next 2 and ½
months there will be much celebration. Halloween parties for
the kids, thanksgiving dinners
for the needy and remembrance
at Christmas that may include
kids parties at the post. The reason I mention this is all these
activities you should report and
help us achieve that 100% in

I would like to start off saying
it is an honor to be your Son
State Commander. Thank you
all for your support at the State
Convention.
It is going to be a fun year. The
Sons are getting ready to start
their 1st state project on the
State Headquarters. We will be
replacing the front windows and
putting siding on the front of the
building. Also, we need to get
with the third district and Post

the flag retirement.
It’s that time of year again, membership cards are in. Let’s get
them renewed by December 31,
2011. Also, make sure all project reports are in for your local

knows what we are doing for
our vets.
Again – thanks for the support
and if anyone ever needs anything, call me day or night, I’m
here for all of you. – Thanks!
Commissary Update
by Gene Brainer
The Veterans Affairs
Committee passed S 277
this summer for governmentfunded health care for families
exposed to the contaminated
water at Camp Lejuene. But
if passed, this will come at a
cost to all active duty and veterans personnel and families
in the form of elimination of
commissaries. It would end
annual appropriations for commissaries and merge these
base grocery store operations
with the exchanges which is
the name for base department
stores. There are those on
Capital Hill who oppose this
proposition and are presenting arguments and proposals
that would keep the commissaries open. In June, when
forced to find cuts in defense
spending to pay for Lejeune
vets’ health care there was a
proposal streamlining military
store operations. The full committee agreed. Just by getting
S. 277 through the veterans
affairs committee this summer,
Senator Burr brought ailing
Lejeune veterans and families
closer to the medical help they
need. There are other savings that can be found within
the Department of Defense
budget. Contact your representatives and let them know
that you are against closing of the commissaries and
that funding for family health
care for contaminated water
exposure can be funded with
reduction in other programs.
Weight Reduction
by Gene Brainer
Common rules of thumb exaggerate how much weight people
will lose from a given dietary
calorie reduction, leading to
unrealistic expectations and
disappointment, researchers
said. Whereas patients are often
told that cutting 500 calories a
day will let them lose a pound a
week, a more realistic formula
is that such a caloric reduction would lead to a 50-pound
loss over three or more years,
according to Kevin D. Hall,
PhD, of the National Institute
of Diabetes and Digestive and
Kidney Diseases in Bethesda,
Md., and colleagues. Even then
such weight loss is possible only
if the calorie reduction is actually
maintained over that time. The
standard rules -- endorsed by

Association, among others -- fail
to consider that human metabolism responds dynamically to
changes in diet and body composition, Hall and colleagues
asserted.
If a 300-pound dieter could
really lose a pound a week by
cutting his regular diet by 500
calories, he would vanish entirely in six years.

Over the past decade, the
Veterans Affairs Department
spent $717 million for an antipsychotic drug to treat posttraumatic stress disorder that
a recent study shows is no
more effective than a placebo.
Data provided by the department in response to a Nextgov
query showed that VA doctors
wrote more than 5 million prescriptions for risperidone from
OCT 2000, the beginning of fiscal 2001, through June 2010.
Risperidone is the generic name
for Risperdal, a second-generation anti-psychotic drug originally developed by the Janssen
Pharmaceuticals division of
Johnson & Johnson to treat
severe mental conditions such
VA Homeless Vets
by Gene Brainer
The number of homeless
female veterans is on the rise
and the high rate of Military
Sexual Assault may be partly
to blame. Between 2008 and
2009, women veterans made
up 7.5 percent of the estimated 75,609 homeless service
members, according to the
Department of Veteran Affairs.
The same organization found
that 20 percent of of female
Iraq and Afghanistan veterans have experienced Military
Sexual Abuse, a trauma that
is more likely to impede a veteran‘s transition back to society,
than a combat-related trauma,
according to a 2009 Clinical
Psychology Review study, the
Portland Monthly cited. “I think
I can say confidently that every
single woman in the military has
dealt with sexual harassment
at some time in their career,”
Mickiela Montoya, a homeless
veteran, told ABC. Montoya,
who served as a policewoman
in Iraq for seven years said a fellow soldier threatened to rape
her in Iraq.
Recognizing the pressing need
to cater to this specific population, the U.S. Department
of Labor‘s Women Bureau
launched a guide for service
providers in July to ensure that
homeless veterans‘ unique
challenges are adequately
addressed . Often women
veterans are neither aware
of the available services nor
comfortable accessing them.
Something must be done.

as schizophrenia and bipolar
disorder. But a paper by VA
researchers published 2 AUG
in the Journal of the American
Medical Association concluded,
“treatment with risperidone
compared with placebo did
not reduce PTSD symptoms.”
That paper, whose lead author
is Dr. John H. Krystal, director of
the clinical neurosciences division of VA’s National Center for
PTSD, concluded: “Overall, the
data do not provide strong support for the current widespread
prescription of risperidone
to patients with . . . militaryrelated PTSD symptoms, and
these findings should stimulate
careful review of the benefits of
these medications in patients
with chronic PTSD.” The study
included 193 Vietnam veterans
and 63 Iraq and Afghanistan
veterans.
While the paper focused on
risperidone, it also questioned
the effectiveness of other second-generation anti-psychotic
drugs, including Seroquel, also
known by its generic name
quetiapine. VA told Nextgov it
spent $846 million on Seroquel
over the past decade for more
than 6.6 million prescriptions.
Besides prescribing Seroquel
for use as an anti-psychotic
drug, both VA and Defense
Department physicians prescribe it as a sleep aid, despite
the fact the drug has been
implicated in the deaths of two
Marines who took large doses
of it. Though the Food and Drug
Administration has approved
risperidone only for treatment of
schizophrenia, bipolar disorder
and irritability associated with
autistic disorder in children and
adolescents, clinicians are free
to prescribe it as they see fit, a
practice known as “off-label”
use. The paper on risperidone
published earlier this month
reported the results of the first
large trial measuring the effectiveness of second-generation
anti-psychotics in the treatment
of PTSD, previous research
found little evidence the drugs
were effective and VA’s own
clinical practice guidelines, first
published in 2004, when the
department spent $66 million
on risperidone and $56 million
on Seroquel, warned against
using the drugs to treat PTSD.
Those guidelines, still in force
today for both VA and Defense,
cautioned “there is insufficient
literature to recommend the
use of atypical anti-psychotics
(olanzapine, quetiapine, risperidone, ziprasidone, aripiprazole)
to recommend their routine use
in PTSD.”
WWII Vets
by Gene Brainer
Charles Murray, one of the
most decorated Soldiers of
World War II, died at the age
of 89 at his home in Columbia,
S.C.. Murray, who retired from
the Army as a colonel, received
the Medal of Honor, three Silver
Stars, two Bronze Stars, and the
French Legion of Honor. While
taking a nap 12 AUG, he died
at home in his bed of congestive heart failure six weeks after
having a pacemaker implanted. “He was the epitome of
the American hero,” said Maj.
Gen. James E. Livingston of
Charleston, S.C., also a Medal
of Honor recipient. “He was a
humble guy. Never self-serving.
We all love him and are going
to miss him. He’s a loss for the
country and certainly for South
Carolina.” Murray served with
war hero Audie Murphy and
was one of the most decorated
Soldiers in the most decorated
division in the Army, the famed
3rd Infantry Division. Murray
received the Medal of Honor
for valor during World War II. On
Dec. 14, 1944, in Kayserberg,
France, then-1st Lt. Murray
organized his company to keep
German troops from taking a hill
and the valley below. He killed
20 enemy soldiers, wounded
several and captured 10. At one
point, a German soldier tossed
a grenade that wounded him
in eight places. Before seeking
medical care, he put his troops
into position. He is survived by
his wife, Anne, son Brian and
daughter Cynthia Anne. Another
son, Charles P. Murray III, preceded him in death. Murray will
be buried in Arlington National
Cemetery. [Source: Military.com

COLA 2012 Update
by Gene Brainer
With deficit reduction negotiations running into the federal
debt limit deadline, cost-ofliving adjustment (COLA) cuts
remain on a short list of dwindling options for Congressional
leaders and the White House. A
recent editorial appearing in The
Washington Post called the proposed switch to the more slowly-growing -chained- consumer
price index (CPI) -a relatively
easy way to save about $300
billion over the next decade
Senior and veteran groups are
fighting any cut to the growth
of COLAs because the boost
is growing too slowly already.
A recent study by The Senior
Citizens League (TSCL) found
that seniors have lost almost
one-third of their buying power
since 2000. While the COLA
increased Social Security benefits about 31 percent, typical
senior expenses have jumped
73 percent.
Living costs for seniors 65
and older are rising faster than
younger households because
seniors use more medical
care and health care costs
are growing faster than prices for most other goods and
services. According to a fact
sheet released by the National
Academy of Social Insurance
(NASI), households headed by
seniors 65 or older spend two
to three times as much of their
budgets on medical care as
younger households do and
disabled individuals spend
even more. NASI also says that
healthcare costs have grown
faster than prices for other
goods; and services for more
than three decades. Monthly
premiums for Medicare Part B
have grown -fifteen-fold- since
1976 — from $7.20 to $115.40
in 2011. What you can do:
Members of Congress are
more likely to re-think voting for legislation when they
see a large number of seniors
adamantly opposed to cutting
COLAs. Write to or call your
Member of Congress and ask
what plans he or she supports
to maintain COLA adjustments
in their present form. The more
input they get from their senior
and veteran constituents the
least likely they are to support
the proposed changes. For

telephone contact data refer

NOVEMBER 2011
Social Security Fund Depletion
Medicare and Social Security‘s
finances are deteriorating, and
both programs are now forecast to become insolvent earlier than anticipated. That‘s the
word from the Medicare and
Social Security Trustees‘ latest annual report. It‘s stirring
the debate over benefit cuts to
reduce the federal budget deficit. The Trustees estimate that
Medicare‘s Hospital Insurance
Trust Fund will run dry five
years earlier than forecast one
year ago. The news was particularly surprising because the
estimates include income from
a new Medicare surtax, passed
under healthcare reform legislation, that starts in 2013 on all
earnings above $200,000 (individuals) or $250,000 (married
couples). The Social Security
Trust Fund also lost one year of
solvency over the past year, and
is now projected to be insolvent by 2036. Social Security
Disability is in much worse shape
and it‘s projected to run short by
2018. Of immediate concern to
seniors are the Trustee projections for the 2012 cost-of- living
adjustment (COLA) and Part B
premiums. The Trustees estimate that there would be a
COLA in 2012, albeit a very low
one, of 0.7% to 1.2 %. Medicare
Part B monthly premiums are
forecast to be $106.60. For
most seniors, higher Medicare
premiums would consume the
entire COLA increase While
this is bad, the situation could
get even worse. Congressional
leaders and the White House
are discussing deficit reduction
plans that would make seniors
pay more for their Medicare
and various changes to Social
Security that include slowing the
growth of COLAs. Despite daily
contradictory headlines, nothing has been ruled out yet, and
major changes remain under
consideration. Seniors who are
already retired and those nearing retirement have few options
if the benefits they rely on today
were to be cut. The Senior
Citizens League (TSCL) is fighting any such proposals affecting
the benefits of current retirees.
What you can do: Write to your
Member of Congress and ask
what plans he or she supports
to – fix the financing problems
of Medicare and Social Security
and to ensure funding will be
there for the benefits you rely on

knows the location of their military Separation Document (DD
Form 214 from 1950 to present and WD (War Department)
Form 53-55 and other variations
prior to 1950). Note that registering a copy at the county court
house may make that document
a public record. Separation
Documents issued after 1969
may contain a Social security
Number which could be used
for identity theft. Storing the
Separation Document in a safe
deposit box may make it difficult
to retrieve immediately upon the
death of the retiree or honorably
discharged veteran. The better
storage locations are:
1. Fire safe in a secure location
of the house (not in the bedroom
as this is where most thieves
search first).
2. In a watertight food container
(Glad, Tupperware. etc.) in the
refrigerator. Most refrigerators
are fire resistant. Additionally, a
refrigerator is heavy enough to
fall through the floor of a building into the cooler part of the
fire in the basement and better survive. Finally, a refrigerator is large enough to be easily
located in the ash and ruble of
a fire or other serious incident.
(As a bonus, everyone has a
refrigerator, not every one has
a fire resistant storage box). Be
sure to inform your spouse and
relatives where to locate your
Separation Document - and any
other important papers.
Notes of Interest:
Gun Safety.
A federal judge has issued
a preliminary injunction that
blocks implementation of a
Florida law H.B. 155 that would
interfere with the ability of doctors to educate patients about
gun safety.
Ambulance chasers.
The U.S. Court of Appeals has
upheld a Texas law (H.B. 148)
that makes it a crime for lawyers
or health professionals to solicit
automobile crash victims within
the first 30 days of an accident.
Crime Stats.
Violent crime dropped 6 percent

last year, the fourth consecutive
annual decline, the FBI reported today. (Robbery fell 10 percent, rape dropped 5 percent,
and murder, non-negligent
manslaughter and aggravated
assault fell more than 4 percent
each.) Property crime was down
for the eighth straight year, falling 2.7 percent. But the grand
totals for 2010 were still staggering-sounding: 1.2 million violent
crimes and 9 million property
crimes.
GI Bill.
Effective October 1, 2011, the
Post-9/11 GI Bill pays a housing stipend to students enrolled
solely in online classes. The stipend is half the national average
of BAH for an E–5 with dependents – $673.50 per month for
2011.

Pork.
The FDA has revised its cooking
temperature recommendation
for pork. It is now 145 degrees
Fahrenheit vice 160 degrees
internal temperature for tenderloins, chop, and roasts which
gives a juicier and pinker cut
of meat. Ground pork like all
ground meat should be cooked

Sons of AMVETS – Programs
Membership Report
by Hank Rumage
We will have the same membership
awards
program
as we used last year. Post
Commanders will be notified
of your base numbers for the
membership contest for 20112012. This is the number that will
be used as a starting number for
figuring the percentage of membership increase for the contest.
On a personal note, I want
to thank all the posts for your
recruitment effort last year.
Kentucky done really well and
it is to your credit that we made
our quota as recognized by the
National AMVET Organization.
We as a Department have been
doing quite well in recruitment,
but we need to put a little extra
effort in retention of our current members. One suggestion
is that each post offers some
sort of incentive or monetary
award for those who renew their
NOVEMBER 2011
membership in a timely manner. It could be anything from a
drawing for a cash award or other prizes, to a paid life membership drawing. It could be whatever the post may choose but it
should be limited to renewal of
annual members only.
On the Department level
our contest winners will again
receive trophies. One for the
most members gained and
another for the highest percentage gain.
A reminder that on January 1
, 2012, the Life Member cost
will increase to $250.00. If any
member is considering a life
membership this year, now is
the time to do it. Before January
1, 2012.
Again, thanks for your efforts
and dedication to the American
Veterans (AMVETS).
As 2nd Vice Commander, you
are in charge of Programs.
Successful programs not only
help the community but also
involve members in structured
activities. A well-organized
program that demonstrates
an answer to a need will generate interest plus it increases
involvement and promotes
membership. Remember to
acknowledge and thank those
who helped; a little recognition
goes a long way. As each program progresses, document the
information for future reference.
Good records are essential to
ensure continuity; therefore, you
may want to make additional
copies to put on file.
To get volunteers, personally
call on some members who
were active before or haven't
been active at all. Tell them you
need their help and get them
involved. Look beyond your
Post membership to members
of the Auxiliary, Juniors and
even AMVETS who can provide
assistance. Identify individuals
who have similar interests and
concerns. Also look to other
community
service-oriented
organizations and individuals like the Scouts, Jaycees or
Chamber of Commerce. Get
your entire community to rally
behind your cause.
Lastly, if a program works, share
it with other Posts, Departments
and the National Headquarters.
It may be adopted nationwide.
When you finish a project, fill out
the Project Form.
Also, each month fill out the
Monthly Project Summary Form.
Your local 2nd Vice should send
a copy of all the forms with any
pictures or flyers to me every
month. I will in turn forward all
copies to the National Sons
Headquarters. They are very
interested in what all Squadrons
are doing. Totals are given on
the AMVETS floor at Convention
and they are really impressed.
v
If you need any suggestions

turnout ever! Thanks to Mary
Jo Heavner, Karen Akers, Carla
Ritchie, Tina Fraley (Clay City,
Karen Sebey (Clay City), and
Teresa Hall (Clay City for their
help in the kitchen preparing
food and handing out the plates.
Thanks to all the folks around
the Campground for purchasing
candy to hand out to all these

volunteers and great people in
this neighborhood and I hope

1st Vice President /

Nancy thanked everyone for
trusting her for a new year. She
handed out packets for each
auxiliary. Everything is reconciled between cards, and rosters, etc.
3rd Vice President /
Community Service Michelle
Burns: Absent-Excused
$37.00 was collected on the
floor for Paws. President Laura
Risen reminded all that Paws
is a community service project
and should be listed accordingly
on service reports.
PDP Joyce Finn stated that
she and PDP Lil Halbleib went
to convention along with PDP
Barbara Guth and President
Laura Risen. They attended
Missouri Night. She stated that
they always ask about Paws.
There is usually a representative from Paws who is accompanied by his or her service
dog. This year, the representative did not have the dog with
him at all times. He was in a
wheelchair and was thought to
be paralyzed, but he got out
of the wheelchair and danced.
She expressed concerned
that people are getting dogs
that don’t really need them.
She asked that PDP Barbara
Guth express our concern to
National. PDP Joyce Finn stated that she would hate for this
to deter people from donating
to such a worthy cause. She
stated that maybe they need to
get a different representative.
PDP Barbara Guth stated that
she will address the issue at
the National Officer’s meeting
at the end of the month. It was
suggested that we could do a
background check if we donate
a large amount of money to pay
for a Paws dog. PDP Barbara
Guth stated that the dog has to
match the person and the person’s environment. She stated
that it is good to bring things up
because we do have a say with
National. We pay National dues.
It is good for National to know
our concerns.

possible that is the reason for
the change in attitude. Margaret
stated that VAVS Rep Louisville

resigning, so she asked about
being moved up to Rep, but
neither President Laura Risen
nor Parliamentarian Joyce Finn
have received a resignation letter from Michelle Burns. Motion
