A Word from the CEO & Board Chair
Over the past year, Girl Scouts of Eastern
South Carolina has helped thousands of
girls grow into strong, confident,
accomplished women—women who have
become leaders in every part of our
council. We provided the opportunity for
girls to discover themselves and their
values, connect with others and take
action to make the world a better place. In
the process, they developed a solid
foundation in leadership and citizenship.
Girl Scouts is a place where girls are free
to be girls; to try new things, experiment,
be themselves and have fun. There is no
other leadership development program in
the world that offers girls this inclusive,
safe space in which to grow and flourish.
Troop 71 listens intently to CEO Loretta Graham on the impact
of their community service and Bronze Award project (called
“The Pantry Project” in Mt. Pleasant, SC.
Girl Scouts cultivates cooperative and self-directed learning: By cultivating this experience, this fosters a
lifetime passion for learning. The variety of experiences and the value for the money the Girl Scout program
provides are universal. Eighty-nine percent of parents say their daughter gets a greater variety of
experiences from Girl Scouts than she does from other programs, and the majority of parents feel Girl
Scouts is a great value for the money compared to other extracurricular activities. Overall, parents
consider Girl Scouts one of the most beneficial extracurricular activities for their daughter.
The value of the all-girl, girl-led environment cannot be overstated; this is so important to the social,
emotional and personal development of girls.
Girl Scout volunteers come from all walks of life, with varying amounts of time and unique talents. The
more adults step forward to volunteer, it increases the opportunity for girls to become the leaders the
world needs them to be. The time you donate to this program as a volunteer is the most precious gift you

Caitlyn Richardson
Caitlyn is from Mount Pleasant and a part
of Troop 226. She is a senior at Wando High
School.
Caitlyn has family that is in the military, and
she learned from their experience how low
the pay is for our military men and women,
especially those at the entry level just
beginning their careers.
She felt that since these people sacrifice
their lives for us, we need to do a better job
in supporting them. Her project is called
“$ave the Troops” and she focused on
bringing awareness and support to our low
income military families. Caitlyn worked
with her high school and church to collect
coupons, canned goods, and household
items to donate to the local military pantry.

Caitlyn also went to Columbia to speak to
various student councils from different
schools to bring awareness about the
military’s low income and she taught them
how they could create the same collection
program for their schools.
GIRL SCOUT PROGRAM
Summer Resident Camp
447 people attended Sandy Ridge in summer 2015
(this includes regular resident camp, weekend camps,
and Troop Adventure Camps.) This is compared to 376
in 2014, a 19% increase over 2014.
144 girls who attended Sandy Ridge in 2014 returned in 2015.
This is a 73.50% increase over 2013-2014 in retention.

HONORARY LEGISLATIVE PAGE PROGRAM

The South Carolina Girl Scout Honorary Legislative Page Program is an opportunity for Girl Scouts in high school to
investigate how our government works. Girls who participate in the South Carolina Honorary Legislative Page Program
spend three days working as a Page at the Statehouse in Columbia, SC. This working experience is supplemented with
Leadership Journey activities, training on legislative protocol and procedure, and networking with Girl Scouts throughout
South Carolina.
OTHER INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS
Girls participated in STEM events, and even travelled internationally to Spain in the Destinations program. There
was also the only preventive anti-bullying program within middle schools in the council area . GSESC took BFF (Be
a Friend First) into council area middle schools for girls. Leadership In Action was a program brought to at-risk
high school girls to introduce them to colleges via tours and to prepare them for applying to colleges.
The Lego All Girl Robotic Program
*Team #11632 from Beech Hill Elementary participated in the East State Championship on March 7, 2015. The
team won the Champion 1st Place award. Team #2334 from Sedgefield Middle School participated in the
Berkeley Country FIRST LEGO League Qualifier on January 10, 2015.
Introduce A Girl
To Engineering Day
120 girls and 50 adults attended the 2015 Introduce a Girl to Engineers
Day event on February 22, 2015. This event is a partnership between Girl
Scouts of Eastern South Carolina, the Lowcountry chapter of the Society of
Women Engineers, and the School of Engineering at the Citadel. Girls
participating in activities from Design Time and Engineers to the Rescue.
Adults had the opportunity to attend a Role Model training during the
event which focused on showing them how to be good role models to girls.
Girl Scout Juniors and Cadettes participated in an innovative and exciting introduction to the world of
engineering by celebrating “Introduce a Girl To Engineering Day.“
The event was co-sponsored by the Lowcountry Society of Women Engineers.

Girl Scouts of Eastern SC provided opportunities
for girls to participate in exciting and life-changing
experiences such as:

Older girls earned the Gold Award and received
college scholarships. Girls also participated in
STEM and the BFF (Be a Friend First) anti-bullying
program. The Destinations program took older
girls to global adventures in Spain. Younger girls
enjoyed the “Barbie and Me Sleepover” event.

All girls are involved in community service to
make the world a better place, whether it is
individually or as part of their troop.


PRODUCT PROGRAM
A successful product program ensures that troops and girls have additional resources to support their Girl
Scouting needs. The girls also get the opportunity and the hands-on entrepreneurial training to master the 5
skills: Goal Setting, Decision Making, Money Management, People Skills and Business Ethics.
Funds from cookie sales are spent in a variety of ways by troops.
 A weekend at Nantahala with rafting , high ropes, and zipline.
 A whirlwind weekend vacation to Myrtle Beach where the day
was spent at Ripley's Aquarium, and the night spent at
Wonderworks.
 Hiking at one of the state parks.
 Trip to Cumberland Island to see the wild horses and Tybee
Lighthouse on the way back.
Some of the Community Service projects performed with cookie
funds were:
 Trips to cook for Ronald McDonald House
 Donations to Ronald McDonald House
 Operation Happy Sock
 Operation Christmas Child
 Spread the Bread
 Bought peanut butter to go with a group to Haiti to make
protein balls for impoverished Haitian children
 Bought a cow for an Indian village.
Our GSESC troops continued to
support our military troops by
working with the Blue Star
Mothers to ensure donated
cookies were shipped to our
deployed military for that “noother-like-it-in-the-world” Girl
Scout Cookie taste of home. Our
troops said it was a great way for
troops to tell troops “Thank you for
your service.”

ADULT DEVELOPMENT
Adult volunteers had the opportunity to serve on a host of committees at GSESC, such as the Gold Award
committee and the Adult Recognitions committee (to name just two.) Volunteers also had the opportunity to
become Trainers. There is not enough room to brag about GSESC’s Leaders, Assistant Leaders and Service Unit
Managers.
Girl Scout volunteers are the cornerstone of the Girl Scout Movement. Through learning
opportunities, GSESC provides volunteers the knowledge and skills necessary to deliver the
Girl Scout program in a safe and nurturing environment.
“I first volunteered because no one else would. At first, I volunteered for my own daughter. Now, there's much, MUCH more to
it. Now, I have 13 daughters, and a sisterhood of other leaders, all who drive me to put my best forth to be a shepherd to future
shepherds, to instill in my girls a sense beyond self, to think of others first, to give more than they take from this world, and
above all: serve God in all they do. I volunteer to at least try to do good. It makes my heart smile to hear my girls start sentences
with 'when I am a Girl Scout leader'... I love them, my troop team, and my Service Unit full of women who (like me) have the
gumption to wear the volunteer hat, while wearing all the other hats that life throws at us. We work hard, and have a lot of fun.

FUND DEVELOPMENT- SPECIAL EVENTS
The Mary Dean Brewer Women of Distinction event was held March 19, 2015 at SiMT in Florence, SC. Leadership
development is at the heart of the Girl Scout mission, and the leaders of tomorrow look to outstanding women as models
for the character and determination it takes to succeed. Every year, Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina honors women
who make a difference in their local communities at the annual Women of Distinction gala. These awards are presented in
